A/N: Hey guys! See, not a month yet… well, it will be as of tomorrow but I'm updating today so yay! I'm not an entirely terrible person! I know I left you guys in a bad place what with Embry getting hurt and Bella fainting and all, but I promise that it wasn't on purpose and I'm going to fix it! Enjoy!
Disclaimer: If only I were the owner of Twilight… what a wonderful life that would be.
Bella POV: Blackness. For a few brief moments that's all there was; nothing but complete and utter darkness consuming me. Then my subconscious terror began to gnaw at me, tearing me apart from the inside.
Embry hurt… Edward tearing him to pieces… he could die… Everything I love… gone… alone again… all my fault.
All my fault.
My fault.
My fault.
"Bella!" I heard someone scream as I began to resurface. "Bella, sweetheart you have to wake up, please! You're scaring us, it's making Embry worse!"
My eyes popped open then, barely registering Jacob's frantic eyes inches from my face. "Where's Embry?" I demanded, frightened. "Is he okay? Have the Elder's gotten here yet? What's wrong with him? Is he-"
"Just calm down for a second Bells," Quil's voice came from beside me, speaking gently almost as though he were talking to a small child. "Billy and my grandpa have been here for about half an hour already, doing some old medicinal voodoo thing over him, and stopping his bleeding. He's been thrashing around ever since you fainted though. It must've been the link of the imprint telling him there was something wrong with you."
"Well, have they told you anything else?" I pressed, growing more and more anxious by the second. "Is he," I gulped, tears filling my eyes. "Is he going to live?"
Jake and Quil looked at each other nervously, then at Paul and Jared who were sitting on the ataman in the corner of the room staring at their laps, avoiding any eye contact.
"Oh no," I gasped, beginning to sob painfully as they remained silent. "It's all my fault. If I had just let him kill me-"
"Don't you ever say that again!" Jacob growled vehemently. "Do you hear me, Bella? Never again! This was not your fault! The link of an imprint can sense when there's danger around you, so Embry knew something was wrong and was going to come after you whether you wanted him to or not! He would die for you without a second thought, and that's no one's fault, okay?" he finished softly.
"But what if he d-dies, Jake?" I sobbed. "What am I supposed to do?" I can't lose anyone else!"
Both Jacob and Quil's faces contorted in pain at that statement. They both knew all too well what the loss of Edward had done to me at first. Neither one of them wanted to see me go through anything worse.
Just as Jake opened his mouth to respond to me, Billy, Old Quil, Sam, Joshua, and Tiffany had all reentered the room. The five of us leapt to our feet, eager for an update.
"Is he going to be okay?" I asked frantically.
Billy's eyebrows knitted together carefully as he considered his explanation. "It's… hard to say," he chose his words slowly, carefully. "His healing process has sped slightly again, but his heartbeats haven't picked up enough for us to consider him stable. The old magic should have helped him, but it didn't."
Feeling my breath whoosh out of me, I fell back into the chair and Jake sat next to me, rubbing soothing circles on my back.
"However," Billy countered, and my ears perked up again. "The situation where the wolf even barely survives a mauling this bad from a Cold One is unheard of. We thought maybe if you were to go in and see him, he might have… some chance at survival."
That was all I needed to hear. Without listening to one more word I ran into Embry's room, nearly falling to my knees at the sight in front of me.
My poor Embry was lying on the bed, covered in sweat, hear matted, with a giant gash (that was thinning) running down the right side of his face. I couldn't bring myself to lift the layers of blankets, knowing I'd find enough gauze to suffocate him.
Gently, I brushed my hand across his forehead, smoothing out his thick messy hair. "Bella," he sighed, squinting his eyes tightly.
I blanched, shocked that he knew it was me. "Embry? Are you awake, sweetheart?" I asked carefully, just in case he was muttering in his sleep.
To my surprise he opened his eyes and smiled weakly. "Yes," he breathed, and leaned into where my hand cradled his marred cheek. "Did I get him? Are you okay?"
The tears spilled over as I shook my head. "No," I whispered brokenly. "No, honey you didn't. He ran when you got hurt. Didn't Sam tell you before?"
"I don't know," he whispered back hoarsely. "I can hardly remember when I woke up last. Bella," he gasped, going to clutch what was probably one of many broken bones. "I love you. I need you to know that I love you more than absolutely anything on this planet. I would do anything for you. Do you understand that?"
"Of course," I choked, attempting to hold back my tears and be strong for him. "I love you so much, Embry Call."
His beautiful face broke into a kind of tired grin. "I love hearing you tell me that back. There's no better feeling. You are the very best thing that has ever happened to me. I promise you, I'm going to pull through everything for you, love."
I couldn't help but smile at how strong he was being, how optimistic he seemed to be, even if it was only because he knew he had to ease my worried mind.
Embry reached up with his good hand to touch my face lovingly. "It's alright now, my darling. I'm right here and I'm never leaving you again, I promise. I just need to rest a little more."
I nodded and leaned down to peck him on the lips. "Okay Em," I whispered. "I'll be here when you wake up, I promise. I love you."
He opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, he drifted off again, a small smile on the edges of his lips.
As I moved to get up, I heard a voice behind me whisper, "Amazing," it was Billy.
"What?" I asked, confused. "You knew that me being in here with him would work, didn't you?"
He shook his head slowly. "I thought it might… but I wasn't sure… it's extraordinarily rare… it hasn't been heard of in hundreds of years."
"Billy, what are you talking about?" I said, interrupting his inner musings.
"You and Embry don't share an imprint, Bella. You share something much more powerful: A spirit link."
A/N: Oh, what's a spirit link? Anyone have any guesses? And aren't you guys glad Em's okay? Did you guys love it, hate it, or was it just meh? Let me know in a review and I swear I will update by next weekend, maybe sooner! I love you guys!
Thanks for Reading!
