Freedom Fries - Chapter 25
Rin yawned lazily, scratching her head as she made her way to her door. A quick glance at her alarm clock told her that she should probably still be in bed. Her sleeping shirt hung precariously off of her shoulder and her shorts were practically hidden under the long garment. It was Sunday and she had been given the day off. It was something she was extremely grateful for since she had spent most of her Saturday at the shop actually dealing with customers, a task she found annoying and refreshing in the same breath.
"Morning…" She muttered as she swung open the door to find Sesshomaru standing there fully dressed with a sleeping hanyou in his arms. The sight was odd enough that she blinked the sleep from her eyes to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. "You're awake and dressed… on a Sunday… way before noon?"
"Yes." Sesshomaru replied shifting his brother up higher on his shoulder.
"Are you okay?" Rin asked, automatically reaching for his forehead to reassure herself that he wasn't feverish.
Sesshomaru was a huge fan of sleeping and he tended to curse the first half of the day. She pulled her hand away after she assured herself that he wasn't sick and then she automatically opened her arms to take Inuyasha from him. She attempted to stifle another yawn but it was to no avail.
"I know we haven't talked about this, but can you watch him today?" Sesshomaru asked still basking in the warmth of her touch. He handed her the little hanyou whom she immediately deposited on her bed. Inuyasha snuggled into Rin's sheets muttering something akin to her name before stilling. Rin placed a light peck on his ear before turning back towards Sesshomaru.
"Of course… Jakotsu have you coming in early?" Rin asked while stretching her arms out.
"It's something like that." Sesshomaru replied relieved that she didn't seem to care and was not asking too many questions. He leaned forward and brushed his nose against her cheek. "Thank you…" He muttered before heading down the hall not realizing that Rin was now red from her neck and up.
Rin knew that his actions were simply him showing her a familiar affection; she had actually taken time to research inu youkai mannerisms. And she had seen him do the same thing to Inuyasha on a few rare occasions when the toddler was upset. But it didn't change the fact that his lips had just been centimeters from her skin. The young teen shivered a bit at the thought before climbing back into bed with her hanyou charge. Maybe he really did think of her as family or was it something else she mused as she fell back into a deep slumber.
As Rin and Inuyasha slept, Sesshomaru stood outside of the small home with a yawn filled Kouga. "So this is where you, the wife and your first born are going to live?" Kouga asked looking to the building. "Nice…"
Sesshomaru shot him a glance before pulling out the key Mr. Higurashi had given to him earlier that week. The pair walked inside and Sesshomaru carefully turned on the lights. Sesshomaru let out a sigh of relief when he realized that Mr. Higurashi had indeed left tools and materials as promised in the middle of the floor.
The silver haired youkai had found himself at the Higurashi residence quite a bit in the previous week, though he was sure Rin had no idea. And he wanted to keep it that way at least until he was sure this would work out the way he planned.
"We already measured out where the screens are going to go, I just need help making them and putting them up…" Sesshomaru said pointing towards white chalk lines that he and Higurashi had drawn before he had made his way to the studio one night.
The boys got to work, effectively putting up the walls to what would be Inuyasha's room before lunchtime. As they sat down eating sub sandwiches that Kouga's mother had packed the front door opened to Mr. Higurashi. The older man smiled before plopping down next to Sesshomaru.
"Good news! That loophole I was telling you about that I thought didn't come into effect until next year actually started this year. So if everything goes smoothly we can start the paperwork next week and have a court date by your birthday."
"What loophole?" Kouga asked as he shoved the rest of his sandwich down his throat.
"One that will allow him to be emancipated earlier by claiming Inuyasha as a dependant as long as he has a co-sponsor…" Mr. Higurashi replied while smiling.
"Hn…" Sesshomaru responded pleased with the news but still not allowing his hopes to get up. He stood and exited the building into the sunshine while pulling out his phone. He dialed an all too familiar number.
"This is Inuyasha the great ramen maker, who is this?" The happy voice from the other end said loudly. A loud slurping sound could be heard in the background and Sesshomaru had to stop himself from rolling his eyes.
"Runt, give the phone to Rin." Sesshomaru demanded.
"Oh Maru-chan, Rin-chan is buying me more ramen because she lovers me more than she lovers you…" The little brat said in a sing song voice.
"Sure she does… Now give her the phone."
"But she told me not to get up…" Inuyasha replied. "She said, 'Hold this and don't get up. Then we can finish looking for a present for Maru-chan…'" The young hanyou recited slurping down even more ramen.
"And were you supposed to tell me that?" Sesshomaru asked once again fighting the urge to roll his eyes. There was a long silence on the other end of the phone.
"Well…"
"Inuyasha who are you talking to?" Rin asked taking the phone from the toddler and setting his new bowl of food before him.
"Oh, Sesshomaru-sama… We were just talking about you. How is work? Should we come by?" Rin asked happily as the sound of slurping commenced again in the background.
"Actually, I need to talk to you soon. Do you want to have dinner out tonight?" He asked looking to the doorway to see Kouga looking at him suspiciously.
"Sure where do you want us to meet you at?" Rin asked.
"We can leave from the home. Kouga can watch Inuyasha for an hour…" Sesshomaru replied as the ookami youkai behind him started to object.
"Oh…" Rin said sitting down and willing her cheeks to not turn red. A dinner with just the two of them, if she didn't know any better she might have counted this as a date. But Sesshomaru didn't want to date her. At least she didn't think so. She could never be too sure though.
"Is that a yes?"
"Of course… I'll see you later tonight then." Rin responded happy for once that she had forced a blush from her cheeks. She sighed softly before Sesshomaru's last comment ruined her hard work and set her face on fire.
"Wear something cute…"
