Reese held the bag tightly to her chest. She had told Hunter that she was leaving in an hour, but she wanted to take this one small step of independence. Needless to say, she was terrified without him there, holding her hand. All of her independence had disappeared, replaced by fear. She was fine when he was there, but when he wasn't her PTSD triggered, and she started reliving her old memories of her childhood and her more recent memories. The more she thought about them, the more her back ached.
The Blaine showed up. He was in his Dalton uniform, and his hair had considerably less gel in it, back like it was when she had first met him. Before he had moved to McKinley. At first, she thought that she was hallucinating, but then he took her bag from her, and started leading her out to her car. "Blaine?" she asked.
"I'm sorry, Reese. I was there, I saw it happen, and I just stood there. I'm going to make it up to you now. I'm moving back to Dalton and cutting my ties with McKinley. Everything is going to switch back to how it used to be," he said. It all came out as a scramble of words because of the pain medication they gave her, so she merely nodded and allowed him to lead her out to her car.
"Thanks," she said. She started to get in the driver's seat, but Blaine blocked her way.
"I'm taking you back. Where are your keys?" Reese reluctantly handed him the keys that she had in her hand and he led her around to the passenger seat and made sure that she was settled. "You are still my best friend and I am not going to let anything get in the way of that."
"I've heard this speech before, Blaine," Reese said, tiredly. His resolve broke, but before he could say anything else, Reese said, "I'm too tired. Call Hunter and tell him you picked me up. We can talk about this later."
Blaine looked like he wanted to say something else, but Reese's eyes gradually closing stopped him. Right before she fell asleep she heard a "Hello?" and then she was out like a light.
The next morning, Reese woke up in the dorms, with Aya and Kylie hovering over her. There was someone beating at the door that connected their room to the stairs, but it appeared to be locked. "Hunter just can't seem to figure out that you need space," Kylie rolled her eyes.
"Apparently you don't either," Reese said jokingly. She had already made a plan as to how to deal with everyone else. Be full of crap and pretend that she was alright. "Let the poor fellow in. He's suffered enough waiting out there."
Kylie huffed, but Aya went and opened the door for him anyway. As soon as the door was unlocked, it slammed open and hit the wall, making the whole building shake. "That military training is really paying off, Hunter," Aya said, looking amused . He completely ignored her comment and immediately sat next to Reese. "He's not usually the silent type. I guess you can either have brawn or brains, not both."
Blaine barged in next, still wearing his uniform even though it was a Saturday. He must've really been trying to prove a point. He sat on the other side of Reese's bed across from Hunter. It was really quite ridiculous. "Well, the hospitality here is just amazing," Kylie said, jumping off of her perch on the dresser. "Let's go Aya, we're obviously about as wanted as a snake in a cowgirl boot."
Reese's eyebrows rose at the analogy, but didn't take the bait. Kylie grabbed Aya's arm and dragged her out, slamming the door behind her. Reese shifted and sat up, taking in the awkward situation that had presented itself; she leaned against the backboard of the bed. Hunter was sitting on the edge of the bed to the right, and Blaine in the exact same position to her left. "Hey, uh, Hunter?" Reese asked.
"Yeah?" he replied.
"Can I speak to Blaine for a minute?" Reese asked. Hunter turned around to look at her with a questioning look, and she nodded as if to say that it was okay.
"Yeah, I'll just—go do laundry," he said, awkwardly standing up. Chilla, who had been perched on the trunk at the end of her bed, climbed up onto the bed and up to Hunter's shoulder. "With Chilla." He scratched her tiny body, and he left, closing the door slowly behind him.
Blaine's shoulders relaxed and he turned around to face her. "I think—" he started.
"Let me talk first, Blaine," Reese said. Blaine slowly nodded. "I know you came here out of good intentions, but you're really overdoing it. I know that Warbler Blaine misses out friendship just as much as I do, but New Directions Blaine is too busy for it. My question is, which Blaine is here now?" Blaine looked indecisive. "I'm not even sure, because I haven't given you a word in edgewise, but Warbler Blaine is a whole lot more relaxed here and wouldn't be trying as hard."
"Listen, Reese, all I need is some time. I made a huge mistake with Kurt, and I realized that the only reason I made the mistake I did was because I couldn't come talk to you about what was going on. It wouldn't have happened if I'd have spoken to you," Blaine said. So this was the reason he and Sebastian were together now, Blaine had messed up somehow with Kurt. Reese had an idea.
"How about you tell me about what happened?" Reese asked, and scooted over so he could come and sit next to her, just as they had a few years ago. Blaine looked shocked by the sudden turn in the conversation, but came and sat by her nevertheless.
He told her about the whole ordeal. How he had cheated on Kurt while Kurt was in New York for his internship. And how Kurt had found out. Reese leaned her head on his shoulder. It was exactly like old times. The more he talked, the more Warbler Blaine broke through his façade and soon they were laughing about the whole thing. Reese had said a few, slightly rude, things about Kurt and Blaine didn't even defend him. It was like he had never existed, and she and Blaine had never fought.
Usually, it wasn't very easy to get Reese to forgive someone, but it was so obvious that Blaine was genuinely sorry for what he had done. Plus, he was her first friend she had made at Dalton, so that contributed as well. But she was curious, "What brought on this sudden change in attitude?"
"Like I told you earlier, I was at prom and I saw you get kidnapped and I didn't do anything. Then later I thought I'd never get to apologize so I started feeling terrible about it. So, I figured that this was my opportunity to make things right with you, so I took it, and everything is all right now. Right?" he asked.
"Right. So now that we're not fighting anymore, what's the deal with you and Sebastian?" Reese asked.
Blaine laughed. "So you still love blackmail," he said, but nevertheless he gave her every single little nitty gritty detail. And like that, they were best friends again.
