Chapter 25
Sarah shook her head from the quick and sudden change in location. Looking around she saw that instead of being in the crypt, she and Cas were in at a rundown bus station.
"Cas? Where are we?" she asked, gripping Cas' coat harder.
"A bus station in Tennessee." He stated looking around at their surroundings.
"Okay. You wanna tell me why we are in Tennessee?"
"I am trying to keep the tablet safe." He replied before raising his hand to try and touch her forehead.
She moved away from his touch but didn't relinquish her hold on his arm. "No. You're not sending me back yet."
He looked at her curiously. "Why?"
"Not until you explain what the hell you did to me." Sarah said firmly.
"I do not understand. Naomi did not have me do anything to you and I've already apologize for fighting against you earlier."
"No Cas not any of that. What you did when you healed me." She replied staring directly at him.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Cas stated studying her more closely.
Sarah looked around their surroundings. "Well, how about we find somewhere a little bit more private and figure it out."
Cas sighed, "Sarah, I need to keep moving. I have to keep the tablet safe."
"And you will. I'm not asking you to give it up. I'm just asking you to tell me why I can see demons and hell hounds in their true form. Why Angel warding suddenly works on me. And why, amongst other things I am now having these vision things of you up in heaven."
"You could see that?" Cas asked surprised.
"That bitch even managed to control me somehow while I was asleep." Sarah huffed. Then continued after seeing Cas' shocked expression. "I almost killed Dean. So would you please help me?" Cas sighed again and Sarah could see that he was thinking over whether he should stay and help her or not. Before he could decide she moved her grip from his arm to his hand and pulled him toward a nearby janitor closet.
Once inside the closet, Sarah locked the door. "Okay, I'm going to let go of your hand so I can push this shelf in front of the door. Promise me you won't disappear."
Cas flicked his wrist and the shelf moved itself in front of the door. "I promise."
She let go of his hand and he placed the tablet in the inside pocket of his coat. He then started to take off his belt. "You will need to bite down on this." He instructed. She did as he said and placed the belt in her mouth and bit down, bracing herself for pain. Cas rolled up the sleeve on his right arm before grabbing a hold of her shoulder with his left hand and plunging the other into her chest. Sarah sucked in her breath and held her scream back. When Cas pulled his hand out, she fell to the ground, gasping for air. "This isn't possible." Cas muttered, looking down at her in shock.
"What? What is it?" Sarah asked between gasps.
"My grace." He replied, deep in thought.
"You're what?" Sarah retorted. After a moment, she broke his train of thought. "Cas. What do you mean your grace?"
"An angel's grace is like pure energy. It's what makes us angels." Cas stated.
"I know what your grace is, Cas. What I want to know is what it has to do with me."
"I felt it in you." Cas said bluntly.
"What? How is that possible?" Sarah asked shocked.
"I've been trying to figure that out. I think I can best explain what happened with a series of partial differential equations."
He opened his mouth to continue but Sarah cut him off, "In English, Cas."
He sighed and looked down at the floor, "The damage done to your body was so extensive that it took an excessive amount of my power to heal you. I think that during the transference some of my grace was fused with your soul."
"How…? Why…? What…?" Sarah stammered out. "What is it doing to me? Is it making me… like an… angel or something?" she asked as she thought over the last couple of months.
"You cannot become an angel. That is something only God can do. The only way for a human to become an angel is for them to be a vessel for an angel."
"Well that's not going to happen anytime soon. How do we reverse it?" she asked.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"No. I don't know." Cas snipped back, growing frustrated with their situation. They talked for a few more minutes before Cas suddenly tensed. "This place is no longer safe. We have to go."
"Why? What's wrong?" Sarah asked, still trying to process everything she'd learned.
"Angels." Cas said simply. "Where do you want me to send you?"
Sarah looked up at him confused. "We're not finished here."
"Yes, we are. Now either tell where to send you or I'll be forced to leave you here." Cas said sternly.
Sarah sighed, "Send me to Sam and Dean."
He thought for a moment then said, "They are too close to the angels, I'm sorry."
Sarah then felt the air shift around her, Cas was going to leave her there. "Wait! Just send me somewhere in Kansas. I'll find them from there."
"Goodbye, Sarah. I fear we will never meet again." Cas replied solemnly before pressing his fingers to her forehead.
Sarah looked around to see that she was standing in the middle of the street with cars racing toward her. Quickly she dashed out of its way to a nearby sidewalk.
"Dammit, Cas!" She grumbled, then started to feel around her pockets looking for her phone but came up empty. "Damn."
Sarah made her way to a newspaper stand a few yards away and found that she was in Wichita, KS.
"Well, that's not too bad." Sarah mumbled, noting that she was only a couple hours from the bunker. Now all she had to do was to find some wheels.
She walked around a bit before spotting a car that she could hotwire. It was an old, not well kept car but it had a tank full of gas, so Sarah quickly broke the window and hotwired it.
She was about ten miles from the bunker when the car gave out on her. Sighing, she left it on the side of the road and started to walk the rest of the way.
"Dammit, Sarah. Answer your damn phone." Dean growled into his cell phone as he walked into the bunker.
"She still not answering?" Sam asked, following behind Dean. "You don't think Cas did something to her, do you?"
"I don't know." Dean sighed. They had reached the library when Dean heard the sound of running water. He grabbed his gun and signaled for Sam to follow him. They slowly made their way down the hall and stood on either side of the shower room door. Dean counted to three then kicked the door in and dashed inside only to see that Sarah was standing there naked.
"What the hell!" Sarah cried out grabbing her towel and quickly covering herself. "Don't you two know how to knock?"
Sam quickly turned around. "Sorry, Sarah." He mumbled then bolted out of the room.
Dean just stood there not moving, staring.
"Dammit, Dean. Can I get a little privacy, here?" Sarah grumbled. "I knew I should have installed those shower curtains."
Dean snapped out of his daze. "That all you have to say? Sam and I were worried sick about you."
"Yeah, right." Sarah scoffed. "You two probably barely noticed I was gone."
"Oh, we noticed. What the hell happened to you? Where's Cas?" Dean questioned quickly, moving closer to her.
Sarah looked up at him, standing in front of her. The look he was giving her sent a shiver through her body. "I'll tell you. But could I get dressed first? I don't think Sam wants to see me in just a towel right now."
Dean continued to stare down at her for a moment but finally growled, "Fine." Before walking out of the room.
Sarah wrapped the towel around herself better then went to her room to get dressed. When she was done, she found the boys in the library. Sam was sitting in front of his computer, and Dean was leaning against the table staring at his half empty glass of whiskey.
"Explain." Dean commanded gruffly as she walked into the room.
"I will if you'd give me a chance." She grumbled, taking a seat at the table across from Sam. Dean turned an un-amused look her way. "Well, I managed to grab Cas' arm before he teleported out of the crypt."
"No, duh. Why don't you tell us what we don't know." Dean grumbled.
"We ended up in a bus station in Tennessee. We talked for a little bit and since I couldn't get him to see reason and either let me go with him or bring him here to join us, I had him send me to somewhere in Kansas. I didn't think it would be smart to give away this location if he wasn't willing to join us. So he sent me to Wichita and I made my way here. The car I stole only got me so far, so I had to walk the rest of the way. And there we go." Sarah explained before getting up to get herself a beer.
"What aren't you telling us?" Dean questioned her, sensing that she wasn't telling them everything.
Sarah stilled briefly but continued to keep her back to them and reached into the mini fridge for her beer. "Oh you mean the part where Cas told me that some of his grace has fused to my soul, and that's why all these crazy things keep happening to me? Did you mean that part?" she asked turning around to look at them.
They both gave her shocked expressions. "What?!"
Sarah sat back down and took a long swig of her beer before telling them about her conversation with Cas.
"So what does this mean, Sarah? You get super powers because of a small fraction of Cas' grace?" Dean asked frustrated.
"Well… yes and no. Yes, I have some abilities right now like seeing demons and being able to heal faster than normal. Some abilities might pop up now and then, like teleporting. But Cas doesn't believe it will last. He thinks that the effects of his grace will eventually fade." Sarah explained.
"Did he know when it might fade?" Sam asked.
"No. He said it could happen at any time." Sarah replied taking a long swig of the whiskey Dean had given her.
"Lovely." Dean mumbled.
Sam studied her for a moment, "Sarah, do you want it to fade?"
"Don't get me wrong, being able to see demons, while disgusting to look at, is really helpful. What isn't helpful is losing my free will because some angel's using Cas as a puppet. Plus, the feeling I got from Cas was that this wasn't a good thing."
"So what do we do now?" Dean asked.
"We get back to work. And we'll wait and see if anything happens with me." Sarah declared.
