Chapter twenty seven
"It's over Saki."
Splinter spoke calmly, but with sadness. Shredder brought himself to his feet, I sensed something was about to happen, what, I didn't know. Everyone stared at the evil man with anger and relief on their faces.
"It is not over yet rat!" Shredder barked. "It will never be over." He stated before Foot bots dropped from above bringing a blanket of black smoke with them. When it had cleared, Shredder was gone.
We were all still with shock, Shredder was still out there ready and willing to strike, when that would be could be anyone's guess.
"Quickly. We must go gather our belongings from the lair. No doubt the Shredder already has foot on the way there now." Splinter said, stepping over to where we were. He kneel down next to Leo and put a hand to Leo's cheek. "Leonardo." He said in a hushed tone with worry in his voice. Splinter wrapped his hands under Leo and carefully picked him up bridal style, getting a few grunts from Leo. Supporting Leo's leg with his elbow, Splinter began hurriedly walking for the lair, Raph going right after him.
The other mutants that had joined the fight, gathered their group and headed off. April and I went to assist Mikey, get Donnie down the hill. We all quickly rushed for the lair.
Upon arriving in the lair, Donnie ordered Splinter to bring Leo to the lab, and we all scattered to grab things. I went to my room, I grabbed the nice satchel I found in the sewers a few weeks back and stuffed it with clothes. I zipped Mark into my jacket, put Pete on my shoulder, and Neeko crawled in my pocket. Leaving my room I helped Raph bring his stuff through the lab to the garage, I stood at the door of the Shellrazer as Mikey and Casey began tossing things to me and I packed the vehicle tightly. After my job was done I went to the lab to help Donnie pack his science stuff while everyone scurried around gathering last bits of their possessions. The second I entered, Don was already asking for help.
Koda grab this. Grab that. Bring me this and that, was all I recalled from Don. Between trying to pack things, decide what to leave out, leave here, and what he needed for Leo, Don's mind was a little cluttered at the moment, having himself and I rush around getting stuff.
I had loaded most of what Don wanted me too into the Shellrazor. Leo was on the table hardly conscious, Don was hard at work despite his shoulder, trying to patch up Leo with limited time.
"Hanging in there Leo?" Don asked concerned, unraveling some bandages.
"Trying." Leo grunted, taking heavy ragged breaths. Don put out his hands towards me gesturing for gauze behind me on his desk, I handed him said object and walked next to the table. He warned Leo before pressing the gauze onto his side, but that didn't stop Leo from screaming. Don immediately released the pressure on Leo's side.
"I'm sorry, sorry Leo. Listen your losing blood, I need to slow it down." Don went to put the now partially red cotton back on. He pressed it down, then motioned for me to hold it. Leo kept begging us to stop but Donnie was already trying to wrap bandages around it.
"Stop!" Leo snapped and grabbed my wrist, pulling my hand away and holding it firmly away from his injury.
"Leo on a scale of one to ten, how bad is the pain?" Don asked, temporarily stopping his work.
"A f***ing twenty, Donnie." Leo yelled, shocking us both, Leo rarely ever swore. "Don I can't take it! Knock me out, do something!" Leo begged out of breath.
"Okay! Okay! Ummm..." Donnie began searching through his genius brain for an answer. "You know what?" Don began, piping his head up, "I have a chemical that is similar to morphine, that we raided from a lab a few months ago. But where... Did I put it?" He said pacing. "It's in the draw under the medical cabinet!" Don blurted, sprinting off. I watched Don frantically tear the draw from it's holding place, from my spot next to the table. Mark suddenly crawled out of my jacket and walked over to Leo's uninjured side. Leo with his eyes squeezed shut didn't even notice him, until he snuggled up between Leo's arm and his side. Mark licked Leo's face and whimpered, Leo put his good hand up to Marks head and he rested his head on Leo's neck. I squeezed Leo's arm letting him know I was still there and trying to comfort him.
"Here we go." Donnie came over with a clipboard a vial and a needle. "K. Last time I took all your weights... A month ago...Ummm, Leo...172 pounds." Don read off the paper half in thought. He did some mental math which was partially out loud, as he stuck his tongue out concentrating. "Alright got it. Leo it should start to take effect with in thirty seconds, your going to feel numb, that's normal. There's a possibility it'll knock you out. It's mainly to numb your body though, after two minutes it should have taken full effect." Donnie said rapidly, taking the needle and sucking the vial's contents into it. "Ready?" Don asked putting the needle near Leo's arm.
"Yes. Just do it." Leo ordered. Don administered the chemical and tossed the needle into the trashcan. We waited a few moments and Leo's breathing slowly was calming down.
"Is it working Leo?" I asked stroking his arm.
"Yeah. I think so." Leo said letting out a couple long and relaxing breathes.
Don poked Leo's good leg then pinched it. "Can you feel that?" He questioned continuously probing it.
"Fee- feel what?" Leo asked.
"He's good." Don said glancing up at me. I put the gauze back into Leo's gash and pressed on it, Don took the bandages and wrapped them around Leo's waist, carefully pushing the bandages under Leo and bringing them back up and around again, matching the pressure I applied to his side. Once Don had Leo's shell patched up and I let go, he searched more about the lab. He came back with a stretcher dragging behind him, for he only had one hand, I took one end and helped place it on the table next to Leo.
"Go get Mikey." Donnie ordered, lightly shaking Leo's shoulder. I ran out and shouted for Mikey, to which he surprisingly responded on the first try. I told him to come to the lab and he did so, following closely behind me. "You two are gonna have to get him on this stretcher. I only have one functioning arm and I would need two."
Mikey went by Leo's head and I went to his feet, first grabbing mark and handing him to Donnie.
"On three, pick him up, slowly." Donnie spoke cautiously. Mikey put a hand under Leo's head and the other under towards Leo's middle, I wrapped both my arms under Leo's legs. Before Donnie began counting, Raph walked by, Donnie tossed him the keys. "Turn the heat on." He said turning back to us. "Ready on one, two, three."
Mikey and I simultaneously lifted Leo onto the stretcher, gently as possible, setting him down. Not a peep came from Leo, though he was so numb I don't think he even knew he was being moved. Donnie brought Mark back to Leo and set him down between Leo's arm and his side.
"Good now bring him to the Shellrazor." Donnie said walking towards the garage. Mikey and I took up the stretcher carrying a still Leo, bringing him into the vehicle there was a cot already in there. "Oh good Raph, you brought out the cot." Donnie observed, he gestured us to place him on the cot, we did so removing the two rods from the stretcher once we'd placed him down. They all kind of gazed sadly at Leo, Don began hooking up a heart monitor to him an I.V. and some other things that were all in the pile Don had told me to pack.
"Is he gonna be okay Donnie?" Mikey asked.
"Yeah. He'll be alright. Just- Just gonna take time." Donnie answered adjusting the I.V., he sighed.
"This is all my fault... isn't it?" I asked shamefully, my eyes meeting Raph's, a light gloss of tears forming on my eyes.
"No. It's not your fault." Raph stated glaring at me seriously.
"It isn't your fault Koda." Mikey piped in. "You went up to enjoy the snow. It's what you love, and that's okay. The Shredder found you though."
"We should've known that you don't belong in a city Koda. You need fresh air and outdoors, you can't have that here, not with Shredder around at least." Donnie added. "You already went through enough, we couldn't then stop you from going outside. Unfortunately, we should have." Donnie stood back to his full height.
"We ready to go?" Casey asked stepping into the vehicle, April, Karai, and Splinter joining.
"Yes." Donnie answered.
"You're driving, Jones." Raph said, jabbing his thumb towards the driver's seat. Casey hopped into it, Splinter shut the door, and we all took a seat, either on the ground or in any spare seats left. The Shellrazor took off into the sewers.
"Casey, we need to stop by your house, this thing isn't exactly street legal and your truck can tow it. Cops won't pull us over for that." April said from the seat behind Casey.
"Sounds like a plan." Casey beamed. As we went along the sewers we luckily hadn't run into any of Shredder's forces and would be arriving at the surface any second. Splinter began performing a few healing mantras on the unconscious Leo, Donnie was making calculations, Mike, Raph, karai and I sat in complete silence.
It was about ten minutes before Casey pulled up next to a building. "Be back in five." He said, shifting into park and leaving the Shellrazor. All was quiet in the large vehicle, except for a few occasional coughs from Raph, who still suffered from the flu himself.
"Okay welp. I have to finish this portable x-ray, so I can check over everyone's injuries. After I do that, I don't know." Donnie said, pulling out multiple parts and tools from the pile of stuff that took up the majority of the Shellrazor's back half. I scooted over to try and help the one handed Don. Casey came back in and tossed a bag into the Shellrazor.
"She's all hooked up. We'll stop by your house next red." Casey said stepping out. "Raph, it need gas before we take off?"
"Yeah, it's only got like an eighth of a tank left, and we need it for heat, so a couple gallons wouldn't hurt." Raph replied.
"Will do." Casey said sliding the door shut. We pulled up next to another building and April got out, but this time more into an alley way. As we waited, Splinter pulled back from Leo and took a seat next to the cot.
"I've done all I can, Donatello." Splinter said taking a mediating position. No one spoke, or really even moved, just sat there. When April came back in she had a travel bag, and a plastic bag, Kirby came to the door.
"Everything all right back here?" He asked we all nodded almost at the same time. "Alright. I'm going to come with you guys, make sure you all get settled and everything's taken care of. I'm sorry for what happened." He said, standing there for a moment.
"Thank you Mr. O'neil." Donnie said continuing his project. Closing the door, Kirby's footsteps could be heard heading for the truck.
As we shifted into movement, I glanced behind me from where Don and I knelt, Raph was up front, his feet on the dashboard and he seemed to be drifting off. Splinter in the same spot, April sat in the lookout seat, spinning her chair slowly and texting some one, Karai next to her on the floor, Mikey sat on the floor like us but was propped up against the heater.
"Where is it we're going?" I asked out of pure curiosity, a question that had been taunting me since we left the lair.
"April's old farm house. Upstate New York, it's got mountains, you'll like it." Don smiled at me screwing something together. For the next hour I helped Don build the X-ray and took turns monitoring Leo, everyone had fallen asleep except us, a little light from the door lighting our work while the rest of the place was dark.
