In The Rain.
Chapter 25.
Dimitri's every instinct screamed at him to ignore the chiming of his phone. Desperately wanting to hold on to the fading clutches of sleep, he pulled a pillow over his head to block out the incessant buzzing and stupid ringing. Unfortunately, the phone continued ringing, forcing him to pull the pillow away from his head and reach blindly for it.
"This had better be important," He growled warningly into the phone. His mind still hazy from sleep took a few seconds to make the connection that he could've just answered like that to his boss. In that moment, he didn't care.
This wasn't typical behavior for him, but he was tired. It didn't help that he'd gone to a bar after work last night and had quite a few shots of Russian vodka. Usually, he could hold his liquor, and the amount he'd had was nothing more than child's play. But he was exhausted, and his exhaustion and Russian vodka coupled with the fact that it was Saturday wasn't a very good combination.
"It is actually," The voice on the other line said, sounding as exasperated as he felt. "Abe wants us to come in, Dimitri. I can't even wrap my head around why that is just yet, all I know is he said something about making up for the past week or something"
"Lissa? You ok?" He asked dumbly not really hearing what she'd said. She let out a sigh in response.
"If being so tired you could sleep while standing is considered being ok, then yeah, I'm good." Dimitri listened for any trace of humour in her tone, but there was none. Then his still sluggish mind caught up to why she'd called in the first place.
"So we have to go in to work?" He asked unable to keep the bitterness out of his voice. Lissa's answering sigh was response enough and he soon disconnected. Dragging himself out of the bed proved to be harder than he thought it would've been, but that had little to do with the vodka shots and more about the fact that he hadn't gotten in until after midnight and it was now 6:30 AM.
Dimitri was and always had been one of those people who could wake up at any hour and be alert in a heartbeat, but with all the drama going on lately with whatever was going on with him and Rose and the recent murders of innocent ritch girls, that proved to be harder than it usually would be. It didn't matter that for literally the past week say for the day before he hadn't had to go in to work. His mind had been far too occupied for it's own good and he hadn't been able to just relax at all while he'd been home.
"Dam it." His phone rang again and this time, he very nearly threw the dam thing at the wall. But the number flashing across the screen forced him to take a few deep breaths, and then answer.
"Yes, Lissa?" He said a bit surprised. Hadn't he just spoken to her?
"Oh yeah Dimitri, I forgot to tell you, you're my ride today. Or I can swing by your place with Christian if you want me to," She suggested quietly after hearing Dimitri swear.
"No," He said calmly. "It's fine. I'll be there." Once he'd disconnected yet again, he dragged his tired body out of the comfort of his bed and into the bathroom where he showered and brushed his teeth. He didn't even make a move to get changed, he just went into the kitchen clothed in nothing but his towel and put on some coffee. Lord knew he would need it if he had any plans of driving today, plus he had to make sure he could get Lissa to work in one piece. She was after all precious cargo at the moment.
"Hey Belikov." Christian greeted as he stopped at the curb to pick them up. Lissa on the other hand who was usually the picture of calm and always looked so put together, only nodded and looked like she would've fallen over if it weren't for Christian's arm around her waist. Yeah, Dimitri could totally relate.
"Where's Rose?" He asked when they both had climbed in. Lissa snapped to attention instantly.
"She's not here." She said in a tone that said 'drop it'. Unfortunately, Dimitri had never been very good at following orders. If he had been, he wouldn't have had sex, or fallen in love with another man's woman.
"I can see that, so where is she?" He pushed. Christian shook his head but Dimitri didn't listen.
"Well?" He asked after a few moments had passed. Lissa's eyes narrowed, but there seemed to be something else shining in the green depths. Indecision? Dimitri didn't know.
"She went away for the weekend," She said seriously. Then she turned away signaling the end of the conversation. This time Dimitri knew better than to push. Growing up with 3 sisters, 2 of which had children of their own had taught him that it was never a good idea to push a pregnant woman. She either wanted to talk or she didn't. And if she didn't and you were stupid enough to push her, well, you had better be ready to live in hell for as long as she felt necessary.
"You better have a dam good reason for making us come in at this god forsaken hour, and on a Saturday no less," Lissa snapped the moment she caught sight of Rose's dad.
Dimitri could do nothing but stare dumbstruck and astonished at the small blond. She was so small, so not the size of your typical guardian that Dimitri knew Abe could take her down if he wanted, but as she stood there, hair a mess and eyes narrowed, he had to wonder if that was even true.
Sure she was smaller than the other female guardians and looked like she belonged on the cover of some fashion magazine, but she had to have some guts to be able to make it through training in the first place. And maybe now with a growing bump she looked a bit delicate, but Dimitri had had the privilege of seeing her train in the gym. He couldn't doubt that despite the fact that she was protected by both him and Rose, Vasalisa Dragomir was no damsel in distress. She could take care of herself if she had to.
"Well, we do have some murders to solve, you know." Abe said. "Plus we can't keep these 2 here forever now can we?" He said nodding at Joe and Amber who seemed lost in their own world as they stared into each other's eyes.
"Actually, we can. I don't think they'll even mind." Lissa said slipping back into her old roll. Dimitri, seeing that she was safe with Abe took off to make himself another cup of coffee.
"Geez, Belikov," Christian said suddenly. "How many cups of that stuff have you had?" Dimitri looked down at the coffee in his hand and shook his head.
"Honestly, I have no idea." He said as he brushed some of his hair away from his eyes. He glanced down at his phone to see that it was already past noon. How the fuck had they been working for so long? Christian rolled his eyes and grabbed for the cup but Dimitri was faster and stepped out of his way.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," He warned. Christian rolled his eyes yet again and Dimitri saw the lecture that he was no doubt ready to throw his way. Unfortunately, he was in no mood to be lectured right now.
"Thanks for the concern Christian, but now is really not a good time." Dimitri's voice was as smooth as silk, and he had an easy smile on his face, but his eyes told a different story. That had to be the reason why Christian decided to drop it. He flashed an easy smile of his own and walked away leaving Dimitri alone.
Like before, he hunched over the piles of papers surrounding him. He'd gone through them several times already today, certain that he had in fact missed something. So far, he couldn't for the life of him figure out what that was.
It was needless to say that he was beyond frustrated. It literally took more determination than he ever had to put out for him to stay seated, but eventually he finally realized that he hadn't missed anything.
All of the files pretty much said the same thing. The only common occurrences were the fact that the murder victims had all been girls who ranged in age anywhere from 18 to 25 and they had money. They were either born into a family of money or led normal lives but would proudly inherit money after someone in their family died. Other than that, each girl was different. They had different personalities and everything.
"Jill," Dimitri said suddenly as he dropped another file onto a pile of previously read through files. Jill looked up and brushed some of her curly hair away from her face as she too dropped a file onto the pile.
"Do you think you can run the video one more time for me?" Dimitri asked.
"Yeah but why?" Jill asked. Dimitri noticed Amber's inquisitive gaze, and instantly he knew why. She'd asked Rose who she'd recognized just the day before but she hadn't gotten an answer.
"I don't really know," Dimitri said honestly. "But we might've missed something yesterday and, since these files aren't really helping us maybe the video will."
Several guardians agreed and nodded. Moments later, they drew nearer as the screne came to life once again. Their eyes zoned in on the screne desperately searching for anything they might've missed the last time.
Amber was one of the guardians who agreed, and she watched Dimitri out of the corner of her eyes as he stared fixatedly at the screne. His guardian mask slipped into place the moment the video came on though so she didn't really get anything from his expression. But she knew something was up, she saw it yesterday with him and with Rose. She just didn't know what it was.
"I don't get why he wouldn't just tell us what or who he and Rose recognized though," She said to Joe later.
"Maybe they have their reasons for not telling," Jo said to her. "You know they're good people, if they need help they won't hesitate to ask for it."
"And we won't hesitate to give it." She agreed. He nodded and then she forgot everything when his lips caught hers in a slow, sweet kiss.
"Did you see anything different, Dimitri?" Lissa asked as she sat down beside him. He shook his head but she didn't really believe him. She knew better than to ask about it though, so instead she took a sip of her coffee.
"You know, you shouldn't be having any of that stuff," Dimitri said, eying her cup warily.
"It's decaff," Lissa said. Dimitri only nodded satisfied that for once she was drinking the right thing. But when Christian walked over and set a strawberry yogurt before her, his eyes widened. Must be one of those weird cravings, he thought, because yogurt and coffee just did not go together.
"So Lissa," Dimitri said suddenly. "Where did Rose go?" She had to work hard to keep her face void of any emotion. She wanted so badly to tell him, maybe he would go meet her, lord knew they needed to talk. But she also knew that Rose wouldn't appreciate it if she did. She went out to the cabin because she apparently needed to think about what her next move was. She wouldn't jeperdise that, not when Rose had finally opened up to her after shutting her out for so long.
No, this time Lissa wouldn't intervene, not even out of concern for her friend. Rose needed to come to her own decision and while she seemed as though she just liked screwing both Dimitri and Adrian, Lissa knew that her friend was done with that. The baby had sort of grounded her, but Lissa knew that wasn't the only reason she was making a turn around. Now that she knew the whole story, Lissa could say that without any hesitation, Rose was going to choose the guy she felt she could spend the rest of her life with. What Rose and Adrian had was sweet and wonderful, but she knew Rose wasn't completely happy. She had been though, that week when Adrian had gone out of town and Rose and Dimitri came into the picture. So no, there was no doubt in her mind as to who Rose was about to choose.
"I-I'm not allowed to tell you." She said simply. "What I can tell you is that she's ok. She'll be back bright and early on Monday morning." Dimitri looked at her for a few minutes and then, he nodded. He couldn't wait for her to come back, because without her he didn't know what his next move was. He knew that Rose recognized the person in the video, but he also knew that they'd sort of become friends in the short time they'd known each other. So he would leave the next move up to her, but he would be right by her side for this next faze.
Ooo so, how are we feeling, guys? Any guesses on who the person in the video is? And how sweet is Dimitri? I mean after all the shit Rose has put him through he's still concern because she didn't show up for work. Maybe he'll accept the fact that she's pregnant and that the baby is his? Who knows, maybe they'll embark on a new adventure when they get together, or he could just take care of his baby but have no romantic involvement with it's mother...What? You don't believe that I'll do that? Well, if you don't review I will…Don't believe me? Try me and find out. Insert evil cackle here… ;) XD
Review lovelies and…well I don't really know what'll happen but it'll have something to do with Dimitri, a cabin and a bed.
