Chapter 25 Its A Boy Girl Thing!
Shane's P.O.V
The day had finally arrived. Even though Claire has taught me everything I needed to know, I still had a horrible feeling that this wasn't going to go well. I wasn't meant to go to a interview like this, this wasn't for me. Claire earned this so she should be here right now but instead it has to be me. It was unfair the one thing I had been waiting for was the football game and I cant even play and I love to play football.
'Excuse me?' A woman says, I lifted my head up and looked her and she smiled at me 'You can go in now'. I smiled at her as I stood up and followed her to a room and as I walked in I felt my heart begin to pound and I took in a deep breath.
'Miss Danvers? Please take a seat' The man sat behind the desk says and I smiled as I sat down opposite him, the name block at the front of his desk read 'Mr Johnson'
'I have to say your turn papers and test results are impeccable, but what I also hope to see in our students is their passion and your love for literature is rare for someone of your age'
'Thank you, its very important to me and an important part of my life'
Mr Johnson nodded as he sat forward and smiled 'Go on'
'Well... for example poetry...I like the way it can express so many emotions and feelings that is...hard to express' I explain.
'What about modern literature?' He asked,as my heart continued to pound 'Is there any writers or poets that you admire or even find inspirational?'
'No, not really' I said and he frowned at me.
'Whys that?' He asked.
I hesitated before answering 'Because...I think they suck'. As soon as I said it I mentally slapped myself and I felt even more nervous when Mr Johnson frowned but nodded anyway, even though I could tell he wasn't pleased with the answer.
Claire's P.O.V
'Welcome to homecoming, the biggest game this year!' I heard followed by loud cheering and my stomach turned and I began to feel sick, as nerves began to flood my body.
'You ready Shane?' George says as he slapped my back and gave me this weird bro hug and I nodded and smiled at him. What if this goes seriously wrong? What if I don't do well? If this goes wrong this could ruin any future for Shane.
Shane's P.O.V
'I guess I feel like it doesn't have any expression or articulate it well' I say,and Mr Johnson nodded and wrote notes down on the piece of paper in front of him.
'I think that will be all for today' Mr Johnson says and I felt a jolt of panic, that cant be a good thing, the interview is already over. I opened my mouth to protest but then decided to keep quiet, there was nothing else to say.
'Thank you for your time' I say as I stood up and began to walk out. I cant believe I did this, I've ruined it for Claire. No, I refuse to ruin it for her, think Shane think of something.
'Actually...There are a few modern poets I like' I announced and Mr Johnson looked up from his desk.
'Oh? Who might they be?' He questioned, he seemed curious to what I have to say.
'Well you see they are a lot of artists today that speak about their experiences, they can dark and emotional but they express so many feelings through their words' I explain.
'What are their names?' Mr Johnson asked frowning.
'Well...you hear them everyday. Those singers, those people who rap, those we hear sharing their music on the radio and TV. Each one of their songs are so unique because it shows their experiences and what messages they want to portray in their work. It can brutal but they can covered with humour, its dark but that's what's so good about it' I explained.
'You consider that poetry?' He asked me raising his eyebrows.
I nodded 'Urban poetry, its different and unique but still manages to express so many powerful emotions'.
Mr Johnson watched me and I smiled at him, I could tell he was thinking about what I said and it made me nervous to think that what I just told him wasn't good enough.
Claire's P.O.V
The crowed cheered as our team came onto the pitch, I looked around to see if I could see Shane, but I saw no sign of him but I did see his parents cheering and waving and I smiled and waved back at them.
'Can we have an applause for the quarterback Shane Collins?'. The words ran through the speakers and everyone cheered and I waved at the crowd. The team got into position and it felt lie I had no time to think, all of a sudden the game had started and my pounded as I watched the ball pass from person to person. Come on Claire, do this for Shane. I ran for the ball and caught it,
'Shane!' George shouted as he raised his hands signalling for me to catch it, but someone from the opposite team practically jumped me from behind and I dropped the ball as I fell to the ground.
The game really wasn't what I expected and I wasn't doing well at all.
'Touchdown!' I heard as the crowd roared and I looked around at everyone clueless of what to do.
'Come on guys!' Someone on my team shouted at us as he got back into position again, I looked up and then stood up straight when I noticed Shane was just walking in and he met my eyes and smiled at me, but just as I was about to wave someone knocked me down again and I cursed under my breathe. I need to get my act together, for Shane.
Shane's P.O.V
I sat down next to my mum and dad and smiled at them.
'Hey Claire, I didn't think you liked football?' My mum says.
'I'm just here for support' I smile 'How are they doing?'.
'Not good' My dad answered. I watched Claire and she stared at the boy who just took her down and then walk over into her position.
'Come on' I say, hoping she would do well. The whistle blew and the ball was passed around the field until George grabbed it and made an epic touchdown.
'Touchdown!'
I sat up and cheered 'Go on George!'.
'Want a hot dog?' Dad asked me and I nodded.
'Thanks dad' I said as I concentrated on the game. Come on Claire, come on.
'Only a few more seconds left! This is it only on more play' The words made me feel nervous and as the whistle blew I kept my eyes on Claire.
Claire jumped up and grabbed the ball and turned around to start running.
'Good girl' I say as I sat at the edge of the bench, she manage to dodge every team member on her way and I couldn't help but smile.
'Come on' I said, as she kept running...but then I noticed the guy who took her down earlier was close to knocking her down again. But just before he could touch her Claire took a turn and dodged him and as he fell over right in front of her she jumped over him quickly.
'That's it! That's my boy, He's my boy' My dad cheered grinning as he watched Claire and I smiled as I actually witnessed my dad looking proud of me.
'Come on!' Everyone yelled and at that moment it felt like it went it slow motion, how Claire raised the ball and then slammed it down on the ground as other team members swooped down to try to get the ball before she succeed in making a touch down...but they were to late.
'Touchdown by Shane Collins! Morganville wins the game!' Those words gave me shivers as I laughed at loud.
'She did it! She actually did it' I grinned as I cheered.
'What are you waiting here for, go get him' My mother says to me as she grins. I smile at her as I get up and make my way through the crowd to go and find Shane.
Claire's P.O.V
I cheered along with my team as we celebrated our victory of winning the game.
'Your the man Shane' Austin says as he grinned and walked by me and I smiled and thanked him.
'Shane Collins' A man says as he walked up to me.
'Yes?' I asked raising my eyebrows.
'That was quite a game son, have you decide on what college you want to go to yet?' He asked me.
'I've always wanted to go to Yale, I've had my heart set on it every since I was a little girl' I smiled and he laughed a bit.
'Funny' He says and then pulls out a card form his pocket and holds it up in front of me 'Have your parents give me a call, we might not be Yale but you might like what we can offer to you' He told me.
'Thank you so much' I said taking the card from his hands.
'Dont worry about it, great game' He smiled and then he walked away. I couldn't believe it, I had managed to get Shane into a college, hes going to be thrilled when he finds out.
'Claire' Someone shouts and I turn to see Shane...well me.
'Shane! Did you see that? Did you see what I did out there? It was awesome' I asked him and he laughed and nodded.
'It was great' He smiled.
'I have even better news' I tell him giving him the card 'This man just talked to me about a college, so you dont need spatulas! Your going to college!' I announced grinning.
'Thats great Claire' He says.
'The best part of that game was that I actually enjoyed it and...' I trailed off as I suddenly remembered the interview 'Oh god...the interview, how was it?'
'It was amazing, but I don't know Claire...I really tried' He says as he looks down.
'I'm sure it will be fine Shane' I say to him and he looks up and smiles at me.
'I'm sure too' He says smiling at me, and then I suddenly started to feel weak and dizzy.
'Well anyway they would be lucky to have someone like you at their college' I told him and he smiled at me.
'Ditto' He says and I laughed.
'Double ditto' I added
'Double double ditto times a thousand...' We both say together laughing, and then the whole place started to turn and shut my eyes quickly wishing the pain would go away.
But my eyes shot open when I heard a crowd of boys cheering as they came and picked up Shane and carried him around the corner. I watched as I looked Shane in the eyes and then laughed...we switched back. I was actually looking at Shane...in his body. I ran to the end of the corridor and turned but then stopped dead in my tracks. Monica had her arms around Shane's neck and was kissing him, but Shane pulled back and looked straight at me and I turned and ran down the corridor trying to get far away from him as possible. My heart was pounding and I felt like someone had used a hammer to smash it into pieces. I liked Shane a lot, I guess I was just stupid enough to believe he actually liked me back.
Finally, they switched back! What do you guys think about Shane and his interview? Or Shane and Monica? Please comment your thoughts. Thanks for reading :)
