Disclaimer: I don't own Danny Phantom or Teen Titans.
Working with Batman wasn't how it used to be. Before, he was the sidekick, the buffer for all the information the hero would figure out. He would occasionally find a clue, but mostly he would trail after his mentor, following the case just a step behind. Now, he was no longer behind, but working through the case the at the same pace. There was, of course, an elephant in the room, but with the other League members and the rest of the Teen Titans present, they didn't address it. Robin wasn't exactly looking forward to the one on one conversation that would happen later, but for now, the case against the G.I.W. was the priority.
"The G.I.W., also known as the Guys in White, have been found to perform unethical experiments and executions against sentient life forms," Robin addressed the room. "Now that we know the government is no longer backing them, it's only a matter of time before they can be forced to dissolve."
Raven roamed around the city. In the middle of downtown, there was a memorial. It held a statue of several people, with the plaque underneath saying "Gone, But Not Forgotten." The statues were somewhat crudely carved so that the facial features couldn't be discerned, but she saw the jumpsuits on the two tallest figures that were the same design as the jumpsuit Phantom wore. These were the people Danny lost.
She extended her senses carefully. Most of the G.I.W. agents had left the town when the League arrived, but it would be just like them to attack her and claim they thought she was a ghost.
Sometimes, when a place of tragedy happened, there was an imprint left in the surrounding aura. She could still feel a deep sense of despair and desperation embedded in the atmosphere.
She set her hand on the pedestal of the statue and hoped that Danny could find peace from this tragedy.
Valerie leaned back against the brick wall, her legs dangling out the window. Danny floated a few feet away, drifting slowly on his back. She was still reeling from the bomb he just told her.
"I always had a sense that Mr. Masters wasn't the most...innocent person, but I just thought that was because he was an influential businessman. This whole timeā¦"
"He's been an evil megalomaniac? Yeah," Danny said. "After the accident, I knew he would probably try to get custody. My only family member is my crazy aunt who lives in the woods a state away, and she's never really liked me. So after things settled down a bit, I knew I had to leave."
"I wish you'd told me," Valerie said. Danny raised his eyebrows. "Well, maybe you were smart in not telling me about the whole ghost thing back then. I just wish I could've helped you."
Danny sighed. "Yeah, maybe...but you're helping me now."
"I won't let Masters take you," Valerie swore. "I could probably get my dad to be a foster parent...and you've got the League behind you, right? We can do this."
He chuckled a bit. "And if it doesn't work out, I can always hide out in Amity in my ghost form. Since, technically, Danny Fenton is still missing."
Valerie frowned. "Let's hope it doesn't come to that. And you should be careful, just because the G.I.W. isn't as present as before doesn't mean they aren't lurking in corners. You should come inside and transform back."
He did so, and they sat next to each other on the bed. "It's so different to be near the Red Huntress and not getting shot at," he joked.
She shoved him slightly, smiling. "It's weird to be around the Ghost Boy and not getting attacked by random specters, particularly a dog named Cujo." She gave him a meaningful look.
He scratched his neck sheepishly. "Well, things are going to be different now. Once the ghosts realize the G.I.W. aren't after their existence anymore, they'll be back more frequently. Will you help me?"
Valerie smirked. "Don't you mean you help me?"
They both laughed, the heavy weight on their shoulders feeling a little lighter now that they didn't have a wall of secrets between them.
Wow! I haven't updated this story in years. Or thought about it. Scratch that, I've thought about it quite a bit, but really I've thought more about the readers. To be honest with you, I never thought that this story would be very popular. I was writing for fun, so I didn't really have much of a plot thought up, much less an ending. And that is what this is, an ending. It's probably less than what many of you expected, and I'm sorry about that. But the truth is, I haven't been able to write fanfiction in a long time. I've written original works, I've read quite a great deal of fanfiction, but writing it has become tremendously difficult. Additionally, I felt as if I had backed myself into a corner with the ending of the last chapter. I have little to no knowledge of the DC comic universe, and I don't have the urge to become knowledgeable either.
I thought up a little epilogue scene with Danny and Valerie since those two were the only things I really liked about these last few chapters. Remember a few years back, and I asked if you guys wanted a pairing? Haha...yeah I ended up not doing that. Romance isn't something I can write very well, especially not a heterosexual teenage couple. I think Danny and Valerie's friendship comes pretty close though, don't you think?
Anyway, that's it for this story. I hope you guys liked it, and aren't too disappointed with the ending. I'm sorry if it felt dragged out, or cut too short. I apologize for any weird grammar mistakes in the earlier chapters ( I started this right after I finished my freshman year of high school, did you know that? I'm a sophomore in college now!)
For my other stories (or rather, story) I'm hoping to continue that and possibly rewrite it. However, that will probably not be anytime soon. Thank you for all your support.
As always, if you have any critiques, don't hesitate to tell me! And if you have flames, go ahead and write those too.
Goodbye.
