Looking up at his shadowed face, heart hammering wildly in my chest, I smiled. I couldn't help it, I smiled so wide my cheeks tingled. it was a simple peck of a kiss. It wasn't passionate, or steamy…Yet it was perfect. He was blinking slowly, studying my expression, as if he half expected me to turn and run away out the door. One hand was still on my waist, the other on the back of my head.
''I'm not going to run away'', I whispered, grinning. Dropping his hands, he stepped back as if he had been shocked.
''uh, yeah'', he half laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. We stood like that for a few moments, until he broke the silence.
'' So uh, yeah… Just forget it'', he muttered quickly, knocking me out of my happy trance, as he turned to leave.
''Wait, what?'', I asked, dumbfounded as I followed him to the door. He turned slowly, hand on the doorknob. I could feel my hopes spiraling, as I waited for an answer.
''Well….. That was a mistake right? I mean… You're not, you're not into me. This wouldn't work '', He muttered gruffly, waving one hand around. The word mistake resounded in my head, and for a moment, I felt disappointment sinking into the pit of my stomach. Then my brain digested the end of his sentence, and finally the problem clicked in my head. He didn't believe that I like him. He's waiting for me to tell him it was a mistake, or a joke. I shook my head in disbelief.
''What? .. You have such little faith in yourself...Why are you so convinced that no-one likes you? '', I asked quietly, as I ran my hands through my hair in frustration.
''Cause they don't'', he asked raising his voice slightly, furrowing his eyebrows at me. A silence hung in the air, and he began fumbling with his crossbow that was slung across his back, he looked nervous and awkward as hell.
'' Daryl Dixon…. You can be such a moron at times'', I laughed.
'' I aint no moron. What would a girl like you see in a guy like me?'', he asked finally releasing the door to turn and face me properly. I could see him waiting eagerly for an answer, as he prepared himself for rejection. Closing the distance between us, I gently placed my lips on his.
'' I see so much in you'', I whispered, watching his expression turn from surprise to shock.
''Why?'', he whispered , looking at me as if he hadn't decided if I was dangerous or not.
''I just do. … Now stop looking so damn scared, I'm not gonna attack you'', I laughed, punching him lightly on the arm. He smiled slowly.
''So… It wasn't a mistake?'', he asked me. I shook my head as i slung my arms around his neck, momentarily getting my hand tangled in his crossbow.
''It most definitely was not…unless you thought it was'', I asked, confusion now clogging my brain.
''No, no I don't'', he shook his head, and he produced the brightest smile I'd ever seen on his face. It was a devilish, boyish grin, that I quite liked. It made him look younger, and carefree.
''Then it's settled…Stop worrying'', I said , poking his chest playfully.
''I like you, in case you hadn't noticed, let me just make that clear'', I told him, rolling my eyes. He grinned shyly.
''Yeah… you're alright too'', he mumbled, looking anywhere but at my face. I could see he was awkward, and underneath all that scruffiness, his cheeks were burning red.
''Only alright?'', I asked appalled, holding back laugher as I watched fear flicker across his face.
'' No, well I meant , I uh-'', he stuttered over his words. Bursting out laughing, I cut him off.
''Relax'', I told him, patting his chest. He blew out a deep breath, and laughed nervously.
''Don't do that kinda shit, I'm new to this, I dunno if you're being serious or what'', he confessed, and we both grinned.
''Seriously though, you're better than alright- '', he began again.
''Oh stop, I was joking, relax'', I smiled, noting that he got very jumpy and nervous over anything complimentary.
Another crash from downstairs was our que to rejoin our group.
''I'll be expecting a ring for christmas'', I informed him sarcastically as I slipped past him out the door. I could practically see the tips of his ears burning red, as he muttered an insult that I couldn't help but laugh at. Shutting the door on the dark dusty room, we made our way downstairs, as slightly different people than we had been before we entered it. There was no hand holding, or linking arms or any other ridiculous form of PDA, like there would be in a movie. We simply walked side by side down the marble staircase, and slipped back into the sitting room, where people had resumed their conversations.
I didn't even know how a relationship would work durning an apocalypse. We were an odd pairing admittedly, but all I knew was I chose to be there with him, instead of out there alone. Being with him was the best form of life that I could now imagine. I felt giddy with happiness, as I realized what all of this meant. I wasn't alone, nor was he. We were two lone wounded wolves who had crossed paths and decided to continue on, together.
