The day had been amazing.
First, the Broadmoor brothers had taken them to get some food (though they didn't eat very much thanks to Richard's enormous breakfast) and take a look around the campsite, and then they were introduced to several members of the Falcons.
It went without saying that James turned into a fan girl as soon as he saw them, asking them to sign anything he could find.
"I'm going to be a seeker one day!" he exclaimed to them as the kids were ushered away by his father. "I'll be the best! And I'll join your team and win the world cup!"
The players all laughed sincerely.
"Not if I can help it!" the current seeker replied, "But I look forward to seeing your tryout!"
Unfortunately, this led to a lot of bragging, and he only stopped when his father threatened to silence him with a spell, and if that didn't work, one of his smelly old socks.
The next place they ended up was with the Puddlemeres.
Sirius was a little more dignified than James, but he was still fawning over them like some girl would fawn over Elvis Presley, or whatever that man was called.
By the time they'd had lunch, the small group had already seen both quiditch teams, and the two legends hadn't finished yet.
"How would you guys like to have a look at the pitch up close and personal?" Kevin (or Karl) asked, leaning on his knees to level himself with them.
They responded with cheers in the affirmative.
"All righty then!" He exclaimed, standing up, "Follow me!"
Severus was at the back of the group with Lily a few steps in front, as they both kept lingering everywhere; they hadn't been anywhere like this before and they weren't going to miss anything.
If they had been anywhere else in the group, right up front with the twins, maybe even in the muddle with Peter, then maybe what happened next would never have occurred… but it did.
They weren't more than two hundred yards from the pitch, possibly even less. Richard was recounting how he'd ended up being the Gryffindor seeker when he was in his third year and Remus and Peter were listening attentively, though it was fairly difficult over the row that James and Sirius had begun to stir up.
Lily and Sev were talking about the match that was coming up when they suddenly walked into someone.
"Sorry sir…" Lily started before she noticed who it was. "You!"
Lestrange gave them a cold smile. "I thought I might find you here. How's your little field trip?"
Severus narrowed his eyes as he began to step in front of his friend. "What do you want?"
The man chuckled, "I'd have thought you'd have known that." He leaned down towards them. "I never did get an answer at Slug's little party did I."
"You stay away from us."
His smile faded slightly. "Now, that's no way to talk to your elders now is it?"
Lily was about to say something when he pulled out his wand. She gulped. "W-we already t-told you what we th-thought about your c-club."
"That wasn't an ans…"
"Lestrange!"
He froze.
"Put it away. Now."
He slowly slid his wand back into his robes and turned to face the man who'd addressed him; Richard Potter.
"Hello Dick. Still being the hero I see." He started to walk towards the other wizard, but stopped when the twins turned up behind him. "And the tweedles too! The whole gang's here! Would you fancy that."
James' father didn't fall for it. "Leave. Now. Before I take you in."
Lestrange smirked. "It was nice seeing you." He turned to face the two 'slugs', "And I'll be waiting for that answer." With that he vanished, apparating somewhere no one wanted to find out.
Eventually, after a lot of questions from both children and adults, the group made it to the pitch, though a little later than first anticipated.
It was enormous. The stands seemed to reach the sky and the pitch itself seemed to be even bigger than the one at Hogwarts, but James said that it wasn't.
There were two others on the pitch with them, one of them by a box that most likely held the quaffle, bludgers and the snitch, especially considering the way it was moving around. The other was looking after a small collection of eight brooms, all lying on the ground.
"Merlin! Are you going to teach us how to play?" James asked, his eyes lighting up.
"James!" Richard cried, "What did I tell you?"
"Sorry dad."
The brothers laughed at the small display. "Yes, we are."
"Thought you might like some tips from…"
"…the professionals!"
The supervisors nodded to them before running off towards the entrance. "You've got an hour fourty!"
"Thanks George!"
Mr Potter smiled. "You seem to know everyone around here Kevin."
One of them shrugged. "Well, you kind of have to when you're in our positions."
"True, true."
Everyone (except Richard) picked a broom and commanded it to come into their hand. And then the lesson began.
James, of course, needed no help at all, flying off to the farthest reaches of the pitch and back with no difficulty whatsoever, Sirius and Remus not far behind, but the other three were finding it difficult to keep their brooms in the air long enough to move fifty feet.
Kevin and Karl had taken on Lily and Peter as their students. Sev, on the other hand, was being tutored by Mr Potter.
"I don't think you're…"
"Wha!" Sev landed on his butt after doing an unsuccessful ascent.
Richard brought the broom back using Acio and put it level with the young boy who was busy dusting himself off. "You're leaning too far back when you pull up," he explained, "You need to pull the broom up before you start to lean, otherwise… well, you know."
The boy nodded and got back on the broom again.
"And you need to hold it like this," the wizard showed him a hand position in the air around and invisible broom, "that way it's less likely the thing will get away from you."
Snape copied the position and kicked off.
He got about a hundred feet… before he fell off again.
"You're still leaning too much!" Richard shouted from behind him.
After getting the broom back, Sev took a deep breath.
He was flying again, several feet off the ground, but he wanted to go higher. He'd always wanted to go higher, but he'd never been able to.
He began to lean back.
No! Remember what Richard said!
Pulling the broom upwards, he could feel himself begin to climb. He was doing it! He was really doing it!
"That's it! You've got it!"
He got higher and higher until he was at the same level as James. Unfortunately, he chose that moment to turn.
Sev was freefalling, and there was no way he could stop. It was the most terrifying two seconds of his life, but luckily not his last.
Kevin (or Karl) caught him just before he hit the ground before dropping him back on the ground.
"I think you should learn how to turn before trying that again, yeah?"
Sev nodded. Oh yeah.
