"Hello, my Heart!"
Rose gave a small yelp as her eyes flew open and saw a familiar brunette women leaning over her. Pushing past the woman, Rose jumped to her feet and took in her surroundings. White. Everywhere she looked were white walls and a white floor. Was she in some sort of institution? The only busts of colour in the room were Rose's clothing and the blue Victorian style dress the other woman was wearing.
"What the hell?" she exclaimed searching the room for a way out.
"Oi! Language, missy," the woman chastised.
Rose shook her head. "What... Who are you?"
A large grin lit up the exuberant woman's face. "I thought you'd never ask!" She leaned forward and brushed her lips across Rose's forehead whispering, "Remember."
"TARDIS?" Rose asked, tears welling in her eyes.
"Hello, my Heart."
"What's going on? Last I remember I was in the control room- Wait! No I wasn't! The Doctor took us to the planet... uh... ummm... Shey Shey or somethin', and Donna wandered off. Yeah? Then I got dizzy and there was this man and-"
"Shhh. Calm, my Heart. I know exactly what happened/is happening now/will happen. This moment has been planned for quite a while.. or will be planned... or has already happened." The TARDIS frowned. "Hard to tell sometimes."
Rose took a deep breath, trying to process her words. Taking a moment, she asked, "What is this place? Are we in my mind again?"
The TARDIS shrugged. "Of sorts. Right now, yes, we are communicating through your mind, however, physically you are in a rather crude recreation of a zero room."
"Uh... right. Okay. Why? What happened?"
"Time was changing and you, my Heart, were so vulnerable. Your pack had to take you away for safe keeping. Or they will. Or they are right now."
Rose groaned. "I'm trying to understand, TARDIS, I really am, but you're not makin' much sense. If time was changing what happened to the Doctor and Donna? And what pack are you talking about?"
"The pack is fixing time and when it's righted, my Thief and the Loud One will be righted, at least for the time being. But you... Oh, it would have been most troublesome for you."
"Right. So they're safe though, yeah?"
The TARDIS nodded . "They will be. They should be. They are."
"And my supposed pack? Who or what are they?"
"Every wolf has a pack, and you are my Bad Wolf," She answered. "Something is coming," She added in a whisper.
Rose felt a shiver run up her spine. "The darkness."
A sad smile graced the TARDIS's lips. "You're catching on."
"Tell me what to do to stop it."
"You're already doing it. Just trust your pack."
Rose blinked away tears of frustration. "But how can I do that if I bloody well don't know who they are!?"
The TARDIS grinned indulgently. "You already know. You'll know, my Heart," she added. "Trust me."
"And let me guess, I'm not going to remember this conversation, am I?"
"It's for the best."
With a sigh of acceptance, she straightened her shoulders and gave the TARDIS a determined look. "Right then. Until next time?"
The TARDIS beamed with pride. "Until next time, my Heart." She leaned forward and pecked Rose and the forehead. "Take care of my Thief. He'll need you more than ever when this is said and done."
Rose woke with a gasp, her heart beating frantically. The last thing she remembered was collapsing in a wave of dizziness after losing track of Donna. She had just started to make her way towards the Doctor when the dizzy episode hit. Something happened right before she blacked out. She remembered a button? Yes, a yellow button... And a man. A familiar man with dark blonde hair and large brown eyes. The queasiness in her stomach let her know that she had most likely been teleported to wherever she was now. Where she was, was the question. Taking stock of her surroundings, Rose found herself lying on a round dais in the middle of a completely white room. Everything, walls, floor, ceiling, was all washed in white.
'Zero room,' echoed somewhere in the back of her mind, but she wasn't sure what that meant. Perhaps it was a term the Doctor had used before. Thinking of the Doctor, she wondered if he noticed she was missing yet, or if he assumed she had wandered off to peruse more stalls at the market. There was no doubt in her mind that once he realised she was gone, if he hadn't already, he would do everything in his power to get to her. She pulled her mobile out of her pocket, thankful that her kidnappers hadn't taken it, and checked for signal. The black screen informed her that her battery was clearly dead. She was shocked. Thanks to the Doctor's upgrades her battery hadn't died in years.
Well that just wouldn't do, fighting off a fresh wave of dizziness, Rose got to her feet and began walking around the room, hoping to find some sort of exit. It took her a few minutes, but eventually she found a small crack in the wall where she assumed the door would be, though there were no hinges or doorknobs. Not even a keypad! She was just pressing down on the crack, hoping to find some give, when the wall suddenly slipped opened beneath her fingers. Giving a small yelp of surprise, Rose tumbled backwards as tall brunette woman walked in the room.
"Blimey! Are you alright?" the woman asked, rushing to help her to her feet.
Rose jerked her hand away from the stranger and defiantly got up on her own. "Who are ya then?! What do you want with me?" she asked, eyeing the open door behind the woman.
"You're not a prisoner here, you're free to leave this room if you'd like, but I should warn you, I'm told you'll get awful sick if you do," she said knowingly.
"Yeah? And why's that?"
The woman exhaled heavily. "Truthfully? I have no idea. My husband could probably explain it to ya, but science and physics has never been my cuppa , if ya know what I mean."
Rose crossed her arms and gave her best 'Oncoming Storm' look. "And is your husband the man that kidnapped me? Cause let me tell you something, when my fiance finds out where I am, there is no power in the universe that will stop him from getting me back."
A small smile played on the stranger's lips. "No doubt about that. And yes, my husband was the one to put the Jumper on you, but he didn't kidnap you. He was saving you. I promise, we mean you know harm. In fact, he should be here any second to explain it to you. He's was supposed to be here when you woke up, but something came up with one of his team members. In fact," heavy footfalls could be heard in the hall, just outside the door, "here he is now."
"Sorry, sorry!" a male voice called out. "Is she awake yet? I would have been here sooner but Je-" He cut off his sentence as he walked in the room and saw that Rose was wide awake.
"Who are you then? And what do you want with me?" Rose questioned, trying to place why he was so familiar. He was wearing a black leather jacket over a tight green t-shirt with dark wash jeans. It was a style reminiscent of the Doctor in his previous body.
He held his hands out in front of himself and slowly stepped closer until he was next to the brunette woman. "I'm a friend, I promise. We mean you know harm, we only took you from that planet because it was no longer safe for you to be there. As soon as events are righted, we'll return you within seconds of when you left."
She narrowed her eyes. "So just a friendly kidnapping then? Why do you care about my safety? And don't think I didn't notice that you didn't answer my question about whom you two are!"
The man pinched the bridge of his nose and said under his breath, "I forgot how much you're like-"
"Speak up then!"
"Listen, Rose, I want to tell you who I am, but names are important. I'm not sure where exactly you are in your timeline! Things change and are confusing and I wasn't left with the easiest instructions in the world!" he snapped.
The woman next to him laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Relax, love. She's just frightened."
"Oh my god," Rose whispered. Taking a step forward she took a good long look at the man. She realised now where she knew him from. It was him... It was the boy from her dreams. Everything was starting to become clearer, she'd forgotten about them before, but now she could recall the dreams in perfect clarity. "It's you. I've dreamt of you."
A smile played at the man's lips. "It's been a long time, but yeah. That was me."
"Who are you?"
"My name's Tony, and this is my wife Ashleigh."
His wife grinned enthusiastically. "Pleasure to meet you. Seriously! This is a big moment."
Rose nodded. "Alright then. Explain to me why I should trust you."
Tony smiled and slipped his jacket off and gestured to the dais Rose had woken up on. "Let's take a seat, yeah?" He frowned when he noticed Rose staring at his arm. "What's wrong?"
"Your tattoo..." she trailed off and continued staring at the outline on the large black wolf that was tattooed across his forearm, a bit covered by his sleeve. "Why do you have it?"
"It's a symbol everyone on my team has. It's a sign of trust."
Ashleigh held you the necklace she was wearing. It was a small silver wolf, it's held tilted back, mid-howl. "Tattoos are a bit too permanent for me," she explained.
"Why would you choose a wolf?" Rose asked, her voice shaky.
Tony smirked. "Why do you think?"
"Bad Wolf."
"Indeed."
"Explain."
He looked down at the watch on his wrist and cringed. "I don't have much time, so you're just going to have to trust me. Can you do that, Rose? Can you trust me?" He gestured to his wife. "Trust us?"
Rose took a deep breath. Could she? Could she trust them? Logic said no. They kidnapped her and brought her to this strange white room. But for some reason her heart was reaching out to them. Her heart trusted this man and woman, and she always trusted her heart. "Okay. I trust you."
"Great!" Tony grinned. "So, long story short, something happened to your current companion, Donna. A creature of time attached itself to her and caused her to change certain events in her past, thus completely altering not only her own timeline, but your's and the Doctor's as well. When that happened, your current Doctor blinked out of existence."
"What!?"
"He's fine, or he will be. Trust, remember? Anyway, in theory you should have blinked out as well, but we had information that claimed otherwise. Due to your connection with the TARDIS, you would have been separated into billions of particles and been suspended in the time vortex, with no possible way of returning."
Rose rubbed her temples. "Wait. I would have what? That doesn't make any sense."
"I'm sorry. If I had more time, I would explain the details to you, show you our research, but I can't right now. I promise though, you'll know everything eventually," Tony tried to reassure. "Due to some careful planning, I was able to jump to your exact coordinates seconds before the change in your timeline, and bring you here."
"And where's that?"
"A rough version of something called a zero room. It's basically what's keeping you in one piece right now. If you tried to leave you, you would become violently ill."
"Yeah, you wife mentioned something about that. Speaking of which," Rose looked around the empty room, "where is she?"
"Here I am!" Ashleigh replied cheerfully as she entered the room carrying a tray with the mugs of tea. "Here you are, this'll help ya feel better," she told Rose, handing her the pink mug.
She took a small sip and was pleasantly surprised that it had been prepared exactly how she liked her tea. "How'd you know my preference?"
The other woman shrugged bashfully.
"Ash is great with tea," Tony said proudly. "My mum loved that about her."
"What planet are we on?" Rose asked after another sip of tea.
"We're actually not on a planet. We're in a carefully constructed vessel tucked away in a pocket universe."
"Travel between universes is impossible?"
"Is it?" Ashleigh said with a cheeky grin.
Tony rolled her eyes. "Travel between parallel universes is rather difficult and mostly considered impossible. Travel into a pocket universe is surprisingly much easier than you'd think."
Rose furrowed her brow and thought about everything she was being told. It was completely insane, but completely probable once she really thought about it. The question was, why did these people care about her safety? "Are you a future companion? Is that why you saved me?"
"Well, I've never travelled full time with you, but I've made several trips. If that makes me a companion, then sure."
"What happens now?"
Tony checked his watch once more. "Well, in three minutes, the timelines will be righted," he took the yellow button his wife was holding out, "you'll use the Jumper and return to your time. And then, well... Then things will get really interesting."
"I'll remember this though, yeah?"
He sucked in a breath. "You should, but it might take you a few minutes... or maybe hours. Not totally sure. Jumping here, you had the benefit of landing in this zero room, but out there you'll be exposed to the elements." His watch began beeping. He stood and pecked his wife on the cheek. "It's time. I'll be back in a couple of minutes."
"I'll be waiting," she replied sweetly. "It was wonderful meeting you, Rose."
"You too," Rose replied placing the yellow button around her neck. "You're coming with me then?" she asked the blonde man beside her."
He nodded. "I'll need to slip that Jumper off you after we land." He held his hand over his own button and asked, "Ready?"
"Wait! One more thing. My dreams. Why did you... How did you...?"
Tony grinned. "Spoilers."
Dizziness. That was the first thing the Doctor noticed, followed closely by an uneasiness in his time sense. Someone, or something was mucking about in his timeline. It was clearly fixed now, but whatever it had been had done some temporary damage.
His first instinct was to find Rose. If someone had been messing with his timeline, there was no doubt in his mind that she would had been affected as well, and with her strange connection to the TARDIS who knew what repercussions she could face from that. His eyes raked over the spot he last saw her. It took a few seconds, but finally his gaze found her a few steps away, kneeling on the ground and clutching her head.
"Rose!" He raced towards her, instantly bending down and helping her to her feet. "Are you alright?!"
She blinked rapidly, trying to focus on him. "Yeah. Yeah, I think so. My head feel all scrambled though."
The Doctor leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "It seems as though someone's been mucking about in my timeline. It's righted itself now, but I think it's best if we go find Donna."
"Sounds good," Rose replied, allowing the Doctor to take her hand and lead her through the busy market place.
"Here we are," he stated a few minutes later, outside an enclosed stall. "Saw her head off in here a few minutes ago."
Inside, they both could her a woman speaking. They couldn't make out her words, but she sounded frightened. Frowning in concern, the Doctor popped his head through the beaded curtain, relieved to see his companion alone on the other side. "Everything all right?" he asked her.
"Oh god!" Donna said in an exhale, launching herself forward and into his arms.
The Doctor chuckled, but wrapped his arms around her in return. "What was that for?" he questioned when she finally pulled back.
"I don't know!" she admitted, a huge smile lighting her face, before wrapping his arms around him once more.
Rose's voice brought them out of their embrace. "Donna, what's that?" She nodded towards the large, beetle like creature lying on the ground.
Donna sighed. "It was the strangest thing..."
Rose sat in silence as Donna tried her very best to recall what had happened to her since they'd last seen her. Apparently a fortune teller had offered a her a free reading. Donna had been reluctant, but didn't see the harm so eventually gave in. She remembered the woman being incredibly interested in what had happened to bring her to the point she was at now. Donna explained to both them and fortune teller that she supposed it was the day she'd gone to work for HC Clements. If she hadn't, she would have never met the Doctor or Rose. Donna then went on to explain how the woman had tricked her into somehow changing that decision. She couldn't remember the details, but she remembered that the world around her was filled with loss and tragedy.
Everything their companion was saying was sounding vaguely familiar to Rose, but her head still felt jumbled and fuzzy and nothing was making much sense. "How did you fix things though, Donna?" she asked, trying to piece everything together.
"I can't remember. It's slipping away. You know like when you try and think of a dream and it just sort of goes," the ginger woman answered as the Doctor examined the beetle creature.
He nodded. "Just got lucky, this thing. It's one of the Trickster's Brigade. Changes a life in tiny little ways. Most times, the universe just compensates around it, but with you? Great big parallel world."
"Pocket universe," Rose muttered.
The Doctor turned to her. "Where'd you hear that?"
She furrowed her brow. "I don't... I don't know."
"Hold on. You said parallel worlds are sealed off," Donna injected.
"They are," the Doctor agreed, "but you had one created around you. Funny thing is, seems to be happening a lot to you."
"How do you mean?"
"Well, The Library and then this."
"Just goes with the job, I suppose."
He took a deep breath. "Sometimes I think there's way too much coincidence around you, Donna. We met you once, then we met your grandfather, then we met you again. In the whole wide universe, we met you for a second time. It's like something's binding us together."
"Don't be so daft," she scoffed. "I'm nothing special."
"Yes, you are! You're brilliant," he said with a lighthearted, teasing tone.
Donna got a far off look. "He said that."
"Who did?" Rose questioned.
"That man. I can't remember."
"Well, he never existed now," the Doctor told her.
"No," she argued, "but he said the stars... He said the stars are going out."
"Yeah, but that world's gone."
Donna sat up straighter, a level of fright lighting her eyes. "No, but he said it was all worlds. Every world. He said the darkness is coming." Her head whipped towards Rose when she realised the blonde had spoke in unison with her. She slowly added, "Even here."
Rose's breathing grew heavy as images flooded her mind. A little boy grown up. A pocket universe. The pack. Her pack. The darkness was coming and she had a feeling it wouldn't be long before it arrived. "Donna who was he? The man you spoke to?"
"Rose," the Doctor said in concern over her reaction.
"I don't know," Donna answered.
"What did he look like then?" she went on to ask.
"He had dark skin."
Rose deflated. It clearly wasn't Tony. But then... It couldn't be? Could it? "What was his name?"
"I don't know," she repeated. "He wouldn't tell me his name!"
"Well he had to say something! Anything! Think, Donna!"
"Rose, what is going on?" the Doctor insisted, growing more and more concerned.
Donna thought hard for a moment before saying, "He did say something! He told me to warn you, both of you. He said two words."
Rose felt her palms grow sweaty as her heart rate rocketed. "What two words?" she prompted in a whisper, already knowing the answer.
"Bad Wolf."
