Rule 75: I will not put books of muggle fairy tales in the History Section of the library
A/n: I know it's been a long time, but I've got three new chapters to make up for it! Please keep reviewing to tell me what you think and if you want to read more. It motivates me to type faster. Anyway, enjoy the next three updates.
Zoё met Marissa at the Transfiguration Courtyard Tree at the end of the day as promised but only a few minutes late. She was slightly out of breath proving that she had—in fact—rushed to get there but that didn't seem to appease Marissa who was sitting underneath the tree with a far from impressed look on her face.
"Sorry," she said quickly. "I got caught up in potions again."
Marissa rolled her eyes. "You always get caught up in potions!" she growled. "You need to stop blowing up your potions or you'll never get a partner to help you out."
Zoё's eyes were wide and her lips were pursed as if she were holding back some comment but Marissa was just grateful she wasn't talking. So asking Zoё what she was on the precipice of saying to her wasn't going to happen.
"Anyways, I have a couple of new plans that we can put into action soon, but we need to collect materials in order to get them working..."
"Like a scavenger hunt?" Zoё asked interrupting her before Marissa could list off what they needed.
She didn't understand why Zoё always wanted to try and make everything a game but the charm had quickly worn off. Still she knew that Zoё would go along with the plan better if she thought it all some magnificent game. Marissa just didn't want to add a point scheme to every plan she hatched.
"Sure, like a scavenger hunt," she agreed.
"Okay, but before we go can we try one of my ideas?" she asked.
Marissa stared at Zoё dubiously. Her last plan had been horribly flawed. She had wanted to dye random things pink and paint moustaches on paintings. Marissa was aiming for more daring plans, more mature and dangerous.
"Okay?" she said suspiciously.
Zoё began to bounce as she was prone to when she got excited. "On my way over here I over-heard the third year History class talking about their assignment and which famous person they're going to write a report on them..."
"Okay so?" Marissa snapped. Zoё had this habit of going off a mile a minute on long convoluted back stories that had little to do with what the original topic was. Marissa didn't like that she would have to constantly remind Zoё to get to the point.
"I have a bunch of books on muggle fairy tales. I was thinking that we could sneak them into the history section of the library and see how many students use one of my books for their report," she explained.
Marissa stared at Zoё's wide smile partially surprised. That wasn't that bad of a plan, it wasn't the best but it was better than her others.
Two Weeks Later
Dumbledore was far from pleased when the History Professor showed him the strange reports he had gotten from his student. Upon further questioning it was made apparent that all of them had used the same series of books that they had found at the library. When he asked them why they all said the same thing, the covers were pretty and the stories were more interesting than the others they had found.
Of course, Dumbledore went straight to the library and gave the history section the most detailed inventory check in the history of Hogwarts. He found all the books the kids had mentioned plus extra ones. He found a first edition of the lord of the rings, several versions of the Grim's Fairy Tales, the Disney Princess collections, and all of the Chronicles of Narnia. It was quite the collection and he didn't have to guess who it belonged to and who had decided to shelve them he just needed to figure out if it was a simple mistake or a well laid plan.
So after classes was over Dumbledore called his two most troublesome students into the office.
Marissa and Zoё stood in front of Dumbledore's office. Zoё was fiddling with now fraying ends of the cuffs of her school robes. Marissa scowled at her, she had learned quite quickly that Zoё cracked under pressure. It wouldn't take more than two questions and she'd be singing like a bird to Dumbledore.
"Just relax," Marissa hissed to her. "He can't possibly know about the dye we put in the laundry soap duds."
Zoё gave her a shaky smile and nodded but it did nothing to assuage her nervous fiddling or give Marissa much hope that Zoё wouldn't buckle once again.
Dumbledore appeared from the back and dropped a stack of books in front of them. He eyed the two of them carefully, Marissa didn't recognize him but Zoё's cheeks were coloring.
"We found these books miss-shelved in the library. I was wondering if you two knew who they belonged to, and how they got there."
Marissa narrowed her eyes at him. She glanced to Zoё who was staring back at her with an expectant sort of stare, as if urging Marissa to do something but Marissa didn't get the hint.
She turned back to Dumbledore and flashed her the smoothest, most reassuring smile she could. "No, we do not. Is that all?"
"I suppose so," Dumbledore said with a shrug. "It's a real shame, they're some rare finds. Too bad I'll have to burn them."
Zoё's eyes widened and Marissa sucked in her breath, oh no.
"Burn them?" she echoed. "But why? I mean, that Grim Fairy Tales was printed in 1799 and that Lord of the Rings is a first edition and signed by J.R. Tolkien!"
Marissa rolled her eyes, now she remembered. These were the books they put in the library to trip up the third years. Great, they could have totally gotten away with this but the blow up was imminent. Marissa thought about this briefly, she could use this to her advantage. She kept a straight face as Dumbledore picked up the Lord of the Rings copy and turned to the page with the signature.
He showed it to Zoё and pinned her with a stern glare. "Oh would you look at that. How did you know it was there?"
Zoё, finally seeing the folly in her outburst, bit her lip. "Uh... I took it out last month?" she whispered offering up her best lie.
Dumbledore sighed. "Oh well, then they're still unclaimed so I'll have to burn them."
Zoё suddenly lurched forward. "No!" she cried scooping them up into her arms. "They're mine. I must have got them mixed up with my other books and I returned them by accident."
Marissa was surprised, usually Zoё couldn't think of good lies to save her life. That was a good one, Marissa must have been rubbing off on her.
Dumbledore, however, didn't seem to believe her though. "Oh? Why didn't you just say that in the first place?"
Zoё froze, it was clear as day that she hadn't planned her lie that far ahead. She glanced back to Marissa who stubbornly kept her mouth shut, Zoё was going to have to learn how to get herself out of these messes. Marissa wouldn't always be there to help her after all, and sooner or later she'd have to learn to lie to cover up their many plans if/when they ever got caught again.
"I... uhm... I mean... we... not we... just me... uhm..." Zoё stuttered. Dumbledore continued to stare at her and suddenly she cracked.
"It was a harmless joke!" she cried. "We didn't mean any harm by it!"
"Students failed assignments because of you," Dumbledore growled.
"Is that not funny?" she asked. She turned back to Marissa for confirmation before turning back to Dumbledore. "I've been told it would be funny."
"Well you were misinformed and it would be wise if you never did it again," he ordered.
The two girls nodded at him as he regarded them for a moment. They seemed awful quick to agree and that made him feel like they had something else on their minds, something more pressing to get to. That made him quite nervous.
"You know, I'm starting to think that you two becoming friends is too troublesome. Is there any way you two can go back to hating each other?" he asked.
Marissa made a face. "We are not friends, we are business associates," she said raising her chin defiantly. "And we happen to like our new arrangement."
"Yes, well my nerves do not," he mumbled under his breath. He looked at them both, the two eager girls practically bouncing to get out of his office. "You two can go."
The girls practically sprinted from the office before he could change his mind. Zoё was slower, of course, under the weight of all the books she had to carry.
Once they got to the top of the stairs and the stone gargoyle was moving Marissa nudged her nearly causing the books to topple out of her arms.
"I can't believe you cracked like that!" she snapped. "You still can't be trusted! I told you to work on it!"
Zoё frowned at her. "I have been," she snarled back. "Besides, I would have done a much better job had he not threatened to burn my books!"
Marissa rolled her eyes. "Fine. I'll give you another shot," she growled. "You go put your books away and then meet me at the tree. We have one more plan to go through before the dye goes off and we have to hide."
Zoё nodded and with that the two girls split ways.
