Emmett thought about his conversation with Edward in the waiting room that morning and tried to smile about the upcoming date he was sure he'd have with Rosalie, but something else was on his mind. He frowned, staring at the x-rays he had gotten back on Bella. He knew that doctor-patient confidentiality was huge, but looking down at the images he just wanted to see Edward, to ask him questions, to find out the truth. He sighed, weighing his options. He hadn't known Bella long, honestly he hadn't known any of them long, but he felt protective of her, compelled to make sure she'd be all right, he felt like he belonged with them, like they were the family he was looking for all along. He knew Charlie was at the station, gathering up any paperwork he could so he could do his job from his daughter's bedside. Bella wasn't in her room, as they were running extra tests today, so Edward would have to be alone, waiting for her to come back.

He walked briskly to Bella's room, manila folder shoved under his arm. Emmett chewed on his bottom lip, nervous, something that was rarely seen on the large man. "Edward, I'm so glad you're here." He let out a huge sigh of relief at the sight of the other man looking out of Bella's window. "I have something I have to ask you about."

Edward turned, a small smirk lining his lips, "I told you I'd talk to her man, I just haven't gotten the chance yet." He was ready to tease him for his impatience, but the humor wiped off his face the moment he took a good look at him. "Is Bella okay? Where is she?"

"She's fine." He kept his answer short, trying to get Edward to calm a bit. "I need you to look at these x-rays for me and tell me what you see." He flipped the switch on the wall, lighting up the small surface on the counter top, where he placed the image.

"It's an arm. What's going on?" Edward's brow furrowed in confusion as he looked at the image.

"Just tell me what you see, I really need a second opinion on these." Edward had never heard the doctor speak so seriously before, he had never heard Emmett be serious ever, so he knew something was wrong.

"It appears to have been broken, " Edward traced the lines on the image before him. "This one was a green stick fracture, the radius was fractured completely while the ulna was bent outward." He looked up at Emmett, still confused. "But it seems to have healed years ago, maybe about 16 years or so. What about it?"

"And what about this one?" Emmett removed the arm and placed an image of a skull on the table.

"Well, this is a female." Edward spoke clearly, in his professional voice he used for work at his own hospital. "Basal fracture to the frontal lobe. Orbital rim fracture. Both healed well, I'd place this at about 18 years old."

They went through x-ray after x-ray, Edward confirming all the breaks, tears, and fractures that Emmett had originally seen.

"Is this all the same female, Em?" Edward took a last look at the image before him before making eye contact with Emmett, and once their eyes met, he wished he had never looked up.

"These are all Bella, Edward."
