My Shitennou, an AU First Season Fic
Chapter 25
Parental Intervention
Author's Notes: At the risk of being stoned by certain readers, I found a good stopping point and I'm going to submit this chapter for your reading pleasure. This chapter will help to transition us into the second-half of the My Shitennou story line. I still have to finish outlining the next chapter and re-read the next portion of the manga. While we have largely left canon behind, I'm still using it for reference, so… those true manga fans may still end up recognizing scenes and important events from it mixed in with the new stuff. So, if it takes me more than "a couple of days" to get Chapter 26 out, that would be why. ^_^
Also, those of you who read the story chapters more than once may notice that previous chapters are beginning to have less grammar goofs. I do post my chapters prior to my beta reading and correcting them. That way she gets to enjoy some of the same surprises you all do. So, if you see any blatantly obvious problems, don't worry. They'll likely be gone soon. =)
That said, please enjoy! And be expecting more fun, more battles, more romance and more Chibi-Shitennou in future chapters. ;-)

Tokyo, Japan
Friday, April 30, 1993
Entering the fourth floor of Tokyo General Hospital with her daughter and Aino Minako in tow, Mizuno Saeko stopped by the front desk to gather what information she needed. Getting called into work in the middle of the night did not generally bode well. It usually meant the hospital was either short staffed or something was going on with one or more of her patients that she personally needed to deal with, which again was generally not a good thing. "All four of them?" the doctor clarified, her tone rather surprised as she looked over the files for the four boys.
"Yes, doctor." The nurse on duty clarified, gaining a nod from Dr. Mizuno Saeko as she turned to head in the direction of Room 362. "Ah, doctor?" Before Dr. Mizuno and her two teenage tag-alongs could get more than a few steps away, the nurse stopped them again. "Santorin Katashi and Kanedai Zakuro are in the room with their boys. The rest of the parents are on the way."
Dr. Mizuno let out a short breath. "Santorin-san. He was the one responsible for checking his son out early, was he not?"
"That's him."
"Thanks for the warning." The doctor could only shake her head as the nurse she was leaving behind wished her 'good luck.' From what she had heard, Santorin Katashi had given the nurses quite the hard time when it had come down to getting his own way in regards to his son. She would have preferred to have had the young man in the hospital at least a few more days. It would have allowed her to run a few more test and be a bit more certain of his mental status upon leaving. But then, she supposed she ought to consider herself lucky. At least, Santorin seemed to like her well enough. Stopping outside the door to the room, Dr. Mizuno looked back to the two girls. "I think you girls should wait out here for the time being. It will be crazy enough with just parents and patients."
Although she really hoped to see what Kunzite's reborn persona might look like, Aino Minako had no really good reason to try and be let in the room. Thus, all she could do, at least for the moment, was follow Ami over to a chair. At least, this would give Ami a chance to fill her in on all the details she had not been able to include during the brief exchanges over the communicator and between her front door and Ami's mother's car.
Upon entering, Dr. Mizuno observed the activity going on within the room. At the bed closest to the door, a nurse was just finishing up taking care of the worst of Kanedai Ryuu's injuries while his father looked on. "Oh, doctor. You are here." Being more experienced than some and having worked with Dr. Mizuno in the past, the nurse didn't even need to be told that the first thing the woman would request was an update on her patients. "Kanedai Ryuu is stable and responsive. Just a few surface injuries we were able to take care of for him."
Nodding, Dr. Mizuno glanced over Ryuu's chart, made some additional notes and then gave her attention to Zakuro. "Kanedai-san, how is your son's memory coming along? Do you have any new concerns you wished to address?" she inquired. From the looks of it, Ryuu ought to end up being the easiest of the four to take care of. His injuries were mostly superficial and he had earlier expressed that he was "really only here to see about Masato."
"Ryuu seems to be coming around gradually." Zakuro answered after a moment of consideration. "He's remembering more and more on his own, and I'm starting to recognize some of his old traits resurfacing. He's a bit more hyper-vigilant than he was before, especially when he's sleeping. Other than that though, I think we're doing alright." Zakuro decided with a satisfied nod.
"Ryuu, have you been having nightmares since you woke up?" Dr. Mizuno wondered, her attention going to the teenager sitting back in the bed.
Ryuu's cheeks flushed faintly and he suddenly found himself glad that Mamoru had decided to head downstairs to find some coffee for himself, his father, and Katashi-san, knowing they would probably be there most of the night at the very least. Frowning, he shrugged. "Yeah. Sometimes. Nothing I can't handle though."
"Anything else?" she prompted.
Again, Ryuu shrugged until his father nudged him pointedly. He exhaled largely; he really didn't even need to be here as a patient. "No, not really. Been a little concerned about being, eh… attacked again I suppose, but… seeing as how that is exactly what ended up happening…"
Dr. Mizuno nodded her understanding, giving the young man a kind smile. "Thank you for being honest, Ryuu. We are going to do our best to make sure this doesn't happen again."
"Eh… yeah… thanks." Ryuu offered half-heartedly, but somehow failed to muster up enough tone in his voice to make it sound as though he truly believed it. In the end, he might as well have said, "Thanks for the thought, but I really don't think there is anything you can do."
Dr. Mizuno didn't miss the tone of disbelief in the young man's voice but chose not to comment on it, at least not for the time being. Instead, she gave her attention back to the nurse. "And, what of the state of the other three young men?"
The nurse, who had been waiting for this question, explained. "Santorin Katashi agreed to take his son, Masato, down the hall for x-rays, to be sure he has no broken bones or fractures. He has been in pain since he arrived. Seems significantly more traumatized than he was when he left before."
"Traumatized in what way? Can you explain that for me?"
At this point, Zakuro decided to interject. "According to what my son told me, the boys were attacked, possibly by the same people who attacked them the first time. Ryuu and a young friend of his got off lucky; those Sailor Senshi showed up and got rid of 'em before anything too bad could happen. Masato didn't get off so lucky. Those people had him for at least a couple hours... my best guess. Don't know what they did to him exactly, but if you wake him wrong… he seems to think he's still back there. Bringing him back to the present takes a fair minute. One of your nurses made the mistake of waking him wrong not long ago; backhanded her a good one."
The frown growing across Dr. Mizuno's face deepened as Zakuro spoke. This was definitely a more serious state than the one he had left in a few days ago. And Sailor Senshi showing up? She made a mental note to talk to her daughter when all of this was over, wrote some things down on her pad, and then looked to the nurse again. "And the other two?"
"Fukami Yasou is still sleeping off the anesthesia; with how crazy the night has been already and with his trying to run off on us, we thought it best not to 'fully' wake him until you got here. Takayama Katsuro is stable, good vital signs, but unresponsive to questions or any other kind of interaction."
"Finish waking Fukami Yasou, please, while I observe Takayama Katsuro." While the nurse nodded and approached the bed where Yasou continued in a state of light rest, Dr. Mizuno approached Katsuro. The young man was still laying down, facing the wall, listening to all of the commentary and conversations going on in the room… even if he chose not to participate in them.
"Takayama Katsuro…?" Dr. Mizuno tried her very best to get some kind of a reaction out of the young man, but he simply was not having it. In fact, he made it perfectly clear he had no interest in interacting with the doctor, when she walked around to the other side of the bed to try and look into the young man's eyes.
Katsuro glared at the doctor briefly, before turning himself deliberately to face the other direction. Ignoring her, he went back to watching the other two young men in the room. At least, Jadeite seemed to be no worse for the wear. As for Zoisite, he wouldn't know for sure until they finished waking him up.
Sighing softly, Dr. Mizuno wrote "Catatonic Depression?" tentatively across Katsuro chart along with a few additional notes. She was just about to turn and walk away from the bed when Chiba Mamoru returned to the room, three cups of coffee in hand.
Mamoru handed Zakuro's coffee to him and sat both his own and Santorin's on one of the side tables in the room. Almost immediately, he noted two things. First, the room had settled down significantly since he had left to get the coffee. Second, the doctor was just finishing with Katsuro. Figuring he was less likely to be booted from the room at this point, Mamoru began to approach Katsuro's bed. "If it won't interrupt, maybe I can speak to him? Perhaps, I can get a reaction from him." There was a brief pause before Dr. Mizuno finally nodded her head in agreement, stepping back to give Mamoru further access to the side of the bed Katsuro was currently facing. It couldn't hurt to give it try, after all.
For the moment, Katsuro still had his attention on Yasou, who was finally beginning to stir, when Mamoru placed himself deliberately in the center of the man's sight range. "Ku- Katsuru." Mamoru addressed the man, attempting to utilize some of the same authority he'd had when he had addressed him as Endymion. It didn't have exactly the same effect, but it was enough to garner Katsuro's attention.
Katsuro's gaze shifted onto his prince, and he looked up to meet the man's eyes. He may not care what the nurses or doctors had to say or whether or not they were able to get a 'proper assessment' of him, but his prince was a different story. Him Katsuro wouldn't ignore… not to say he was entirely ready to face him. The idea of having betrayed his prince and his brothers in such a way ate at him. Nevertheless, Katsuro's eyes followed Mamoru as he moved to sit on the edge of the bed.
Behind the pair, Dr. Mizuno immediately made note of the young man's reactions on her chart. It was a bit of a relief to see him interacting with someone, even if it wasn't her or her nurses.
After a pregnant pause, Katsuro finally removed the block keeping his prince out of his mind. Pain, no small amount of uncertainty, and an overwhelming sense of guilty bled out of his mind… along with the worry he presently had for the state of his brothers. What were you supposed to say to a man that you had sworn your life to and then betrayed… not once, but twice? Once was bad, but twice was the beginning of a pattern. Finally, he decided to begin with, {{Don't hold it against them…}} Katsuro swallowed a little to clear his throat before speaking aloud. "It was my fault. They were following me…" Observing the frown that formed on Mamoru's face when he said this, Katsuro added softly. "I'm… sorry. I should have protected…"
"Katsuro…" Mamoru cut him off here. "I can't accept an apology for something I don't count you as being responsible for." Mamoru told the man with a disapproving shake of his head. His frown deepened as Katsuro turned over onto his back and let his gaze go up towards the ceiling. At least, he hadn't turned all the way over and cut off communication completely the way he had with the nurses and Dr. Mizuno. "Katsuro, look at me, please." Mamoru pleaded with him, causing the man to turn his head back in Mamoru's direction. "This was not your fault."
Katsuro's expression was stubborn, his gaze icy; his prince was too forgiving. Not only had he betrayed his own oath; he had lead his brothers astray as well… again, twice. If this wasn't bad enough, what he had done to Nephrite tonight… attempted to do with Jadeite as well… it was unforgivable. Nephrite had been right to call him out on it. Somehow though, he figured pointing all of this out to his prince was already a lost cause. So, instead, he changed the subject altogether. "Katsuro? Is that who I am now…?"
Dr. Mizuno was impressed with Katsuro's miraculous, sudden improvement. She finished marking in the young man's chart and moved on to the last and the youngest of the teenagers presently in the room. Fifteen-year-old Fukami Yasou was finally awake, as she could tell because Ryuu began picking on him right away.
Ryuu's face lit up when he saw Yasou's eyes open in the bed across from him. Grinning bemusedly, he called out to the younger teen. "Oi, Yasou!" Not gaining an immediate response and figuring the man not yet familiar with his name, Ryuu tried again. "Hey, you! The pretty one that looks like a girl… over here!" After all, he couldn't exactly call him 'Zoisite' at the moment, right?
Yasou pushed himself up to a sitting position, his expression darkening with annoyance at his brother's playful words. He may not immediately recognize the voice, but he'd know that teasing tone anywhere. "I do not look like a girl! And to think I was worried about you…"
"Yeah, we heard…" Ryuu answered back, a bemused laugh cutting off the rest of his comment. "Your grand escape plan got cut short by a bunch of nurses and a long needle. Appreciate the thought, but… honestly, I hope they shot you right in the ass. That would be hysterical!"
"You… you…!"
"Ryuu. The name is Ryuu."
"That is not the name I was looking for…"
Yasou's frustration just caused Ryuu to laugh harder. "Man, it's good to have you back. I'm so never going to let you live this down."
Letting out a long exhale, Yasou rolled his eyes and proceeded to observe the rest of the room. Jadeite and Endymion had apparently gotten out of the Dark Kingdom safely. Based on the bit of conversation he heard going on in the bed next to him, he supposed those two were most likely Endymion and Kunzite. That just left "Ne…" Yasou cut himself off just in time. "Where's…?"
This time, Ryuu decided to take pity on his younger brother. Not knowing what to call your own brothers was frustrating at best, as he knew from experience. "Masato. He's down the hall with his dad getting x-rays or something. He's alright… relatively. Little shaken up at the moment."
Letting out a relieved sigh, Yasou was able to relax a bit once he realized everyone was here and at least 'relatively' alright. At least, no one had been left behind. As long as they all got out together, it ought to work out all right, right? Thus decided, when Dr. Mizuno approached his bed, Yasou was more than happy to interact with and cooperate with her and her questions and assessments.
Like Ryuu, it appeared Yasou was going to be one of the easier ones Dr. Mizuno had to deal with tonight. She was able to explain what had happened to him, remind him of his name and a few other important details, and do a few brief assessments to evaluate his mental state. She recorded all of this on his chart and was satisfied. The rest she would leave for the nurses to take care of after Kanedai Ryuu had been discharged and their other two friends cared for.
Once Dr. Mizuno seemed to be finished evaluating him and telling him things that Nephrite… that is to say "Masato" had – for the most part – already covered once before, Yasou felt the need to ask a question of his own. "Doctor? Where are my parents? Are they coming too?" After all, Ryuu's father and Masato's were here already. Shouldn't his own family be around somewhere?
"From my understanding, your parents should be on their way as we speak." Dr. Mizuno explained, repeating what she had learned from the nurses at the desk, before Zakuro spoke up again.
"They are," Zakuro assured the young man. "Melaka and Kaida…"
"I'm sorry, who?" Yasou inquired, hating to interrupt but also wanting to actually understand what it was he was being told. Then again, he always was the curious sort, and one prone to ask a lot of questions.
"Sorry. Santorin Melaka is Masato's mother and Kanedai Kaida is Ryuu's mother… and my wife. They took the limo out to pick up your family and Katsuro's and bring them to the hospital."
Yasou blinked again at this, "Limo…?"
"Yeah. Masato's dad has his own limo; riding in it isn't nearly as much fun as you'd think, but… it's kind of cool anyway." Ryuu explained with a grin in the younger teen's direction.
Right about that time, Masato and his father returned to the room along with the nurse who had accompanied them down to x-ray. While the nurse put the bed back into place, Katashi turned to give the doctor a look of unconcealed relief. "Thank goodness; I'm glad to finally see a real doctor in this place! You looked after my son when the other idiots said he was brain dead! I want you to be the one in charge of finding out what's wrong with him." Katashi informed Dr. Mizuno, pausing for the barely the span of a breath before continuing. "Zakuro tells me our boys were attacked again. There's something wrong with my boy! He's complaining of being in pain all over and waking up thinking those people are still here with him. What's wrong with my son?" He finished finally, concern etched across his face, as he looked from his son back to the doctor hoping... no, expecting an answer.
"Of course, Santorin-san. First, now that you two are back and settled, why don't we get your son some stronger pain medicine?" Dr. Mizuno looked to the nurse, gave her the medical name for some kind of medicine, and then watching her nod and gratefully leave the room to go and get the medicine in question. As the man seemed mildly mollified by this, Dr. Mizuno came over closer to the bed, addressing her next question to Masato himself. "I know this may be difficult, but can you please tell us what happened? It will help me know how to treat you."
Masato frowned uncertainly when his father and the doctor turned towards him. If she only knew just how difficult it really was. How exactly was he supposed to explain this without going into things better left outside the general public's knowledge? "Um… yeah… sure."
Across the room, Katsuro tensed and Mamoru reached over to place a hand on his arm.
In Masato's mind, Ryuu's voice suddenly interjected. {{Dad told them that the Sailor Senshi showed up to get rid of the people who attacked us. They protected me and Mamoru, but you were gone for at least a few hours. Just say the Senshi are the ones who got you out, and it won't matter if the story is a little bit… abnormal…}}
{{Abnormal. Is that what we are calling it now?}} Masato quipped dryly, clearing his throat before attempting to explain himself aloud. "Well, there were three of them… a male and two females… at least that's what I think they were…"
"Tell me who grabbed you, son!" Katashi interjected promptly. "I'll make sure someone hunts them down. This will not happen again!"
Masato had to grin a little at his father's sentiments; was it any real wonder that the man's presence made his son feel more at ease? "Okay, then…" Masato's friends turned to stare at him as he began describing the people who had 'kidnapped' him, while he was supposed to be out shopping for more clothes. He'd have to actually get around to doing that at some point, because if he kept going out for clothing and coming home with nothing, his mother was liable to think she needed to come along and help him out next time.
Yasou exchanged a look with Ryuu before wondering in the man's mind. {{Did he just describe Adonis? Kunzite's little underling that Sailor V beat almost a year ago?}}
{{Well, at least we don't have to worry about Masato's father trying to kill him…}} Ryuu remarked bemusedly. Sailor V had taken care of that back when she was still the only Sailor Senshi getting in their way. In a way, he thought it was actually pretty smart blaming the problem on someone who wasn't around to take the backlash from it… or by some freak circumstance, be recognized later on down the road.
"… honestly, most of it kind of blurs together. There were those three creatures… and a lot of pain that stopped whenever I passed out. Waking up to it again… and, it basically just continued like that until, um, yeah… until it was over." Masato finished, deciding not to even address what happened at the end. He'd told the doctor the part she was most likely to want to know about. "Don't know exactly what they did… just that it hurt like hell."
Dr. Mizuno nodded, her expression understanding, while Santorin Katashi was still wearing an expression somewhere between anger and worry. "Thank you, Masato-san. I am sure that wasn't easy to share…"
It was even harder to try and amend. Masato thought to himself. He thought he'd done a fairly decent job overall though. He hadn't received any mental interjections from the others, so he had to assume they found what he'd chosen to say agreeable enough.
"…but it is going to be a big help." Dr. Mizuno assured him before giving her attention back to his father. "From what we have found so far, there doesn't appear to be any lasting damage that you will have worry about; I believe he is just suffering from the aftereffects of what he went through over the last few hours."
"What does that even mean?!" Katashi snapped, his frustration boiling over as he tried to figure out how he was going to go about making sure his son stayed safe.
"It means Masato is going to be sore for a while, but physically, he is going to be just fine. With your permission, we will run a few more tests to be absolutely certain nothing was missed… and then, we can discuss the emotional after-effects of such an event."
Katashi paused to take in a long breath and let it out slowly, attempting to speak a bit more calmly this time. This was good news, but it did nothing for the worst of his worries. "Doctor, do you really think these boys are going to improve emotionally if they still have to worry about it happening again?"
"I'm afraid dealing with the enemy itself is going to be a bit beyond your ability, Katashi." Zakuro pointed out, causing his friend to turn his stern expression in his friend's direction. "You heard what I said before? The ones that attacked Sato weren't even human; he described them as creatures. The boys had to be helped out by those… Sailor Senshi. It's not something you can just badger the police into putting at the top of their list. We're dealing with something… abnormal."
Ryuu had to bite his tongue to keep from chuckling over his father's choice of wording.
Katashi pinched the bridge of his nose. "A jewelry thief in a tuxedo, strange creatures, and a bunch of soldiers in short-skirts? Sounds like someone's idea of a joke! I thought all of that jazz was just some kind of elaborate hoax."
"You and me both." Zakuro agreed. "At this point, I think the best we can hope to do is keep our boys out of these people's sight until whatever this is, is dealt with. Heck, my own son is afraid to come home for fear of putting his family in danger!"
By this point, Dr. Mizuno had gone silent and was listening intently to everything being said. This was something she would most certainly need to bring up with her daughter and her friend. If her patients were somehow mixed-up in the battles her daughter and the other Sailor Senshi were fighting, she wanted to know it.
Across the room, Mamoru and Katsuro were also silent. Mamoru was curious what the parents would do to try and help their children out and if it would actually wind up being a help or a hindrance in the end. Behind him, Katsuro had closed his eyes again, while listening to the topics being discussed. Katsuro was smart. He knew exactly what Jadeite and Nephrite were afraid of. They were afraid he had gone to Beryl with their civilian identities. This was such a mess! What exactly had he told her? He tried to force his way back through the different sets of memories clouding up his mind and remember that specific conversation. He remembered what he said… but he also remembered what he had been thinking at the time. He had actually said any of that out loud? He didn't think so, but at that very moment, he was not 100% certain of it either... not enough to bank his brothers lives on it anyway.
Masato, on the other hand, had other concerns he wanted address. "Father." He requested, pushing himself back up to a sitting position while his father turned to look at him. It was, after all, difficult to appear determined and sure of yourself while lying on your back. "You can't just protect Ryuu and me. Mamoru and Katsuro and Yasou could be in danger too. The five of us need to be together; that's the safest way."
Katsuro's eyes opened at this. Had Nephrite just included him in that? He had been fairly certain the man wouldn't want anything to do with him after he'd sat back and allowed him to be tortured by Beryl's minions. More than that even; he'd facilitated the whole damn thing! To say Masato's words surprised him would have been an understatement. Shifting back over onto his side, he turned to watch the man once more, curious where this was going to end up leading them.
A good bit of discussion later had Katashi convinced that the best thing to do was to put his son and Zakuro's up in one of the more private homes he owned, just a little way outside of the main part of Tokyo. It was private, somewhat secluded, and still close enough to the places where those Senshi had been spotted that they'd hopefully still be around if the boys needed their help again. He'd offer the same arrangement to the families of the other three boys, per his son's request. Besides hopefully being safer for the boys, it would also help give the boys what they wanted. In Masato's words, "we don't know how our attackers found us either time, so we don't want to risk that hiding out in the same place as our families would allow our attackers to find them too."
Somewhere in the midst of this discussion, one of the nurses returned to inform the doctor. "Dr. Mizuno, the rest of the parents are here. We have them waiting at the front desk. Would you like us to send them all back? Or… perhaps a few at a time?" There were, after all, family members from all four of the boys wanting to get back here.
Looking up, the doctor went with the idea that had been floating around in her head for the last few minutes. "No. Actually, why don't you have all of the parents and family members take a seat in a private room? I believe there are some things that need to be discussed first…" Dr. Mizuno looked to the two fathers in the room who exchanged a look.
"Might as well go ahead and get the discussion over with." Zakuro suggested to his friend. "You always were good at getting people on board with your ideas."
How Katashi had managed to decide that this whole thing was his idea was a testament to how much of Masato's memory had been shocked back into him during his time in the dungeons of the Dark Kingdom. It was, after all, Masato who had first decided this was the best path and begun feeding the idea into his father's head… "Right. I'll come and talk to them."
"I'll come with you." Zakuro decided. "Kaida will be wanting to see me anyway."
After watching the two men disappear down the hall in the company of one of the nurses, Dr. Mizuno let her eyes find the questioning gazes of the two girls still waiting outside. Considering what she had heard of this event so far, Saeko decided to play her cards and see what came of it. "Why don't you two come on inside, now that it's calmed down a bit? You look as though you have been wanting to." Ever the observant one, the doctor noted that while her daughter, Ami, nodded and stood up, Aino Minako looked downright eager to get inside. Leading the two girls into the room, Saeko shut the door behind them, turned to her daughter, and questioned pointedly, "Ami-chan, are these more of the 'friends' you were telling me about on the way here?"
Surveying the room, Minako immediately recognized Chiba Mamoru from their prior meeting and Kanedai Ryuu from Rei's fire reading. She also spotted someone else, a person whose suspected identity caused her heart to skip a beat; however, he would, unfortunately, have to wait. "Yes. These are five more of the Sailor Senshi's allies: the Shitennou... and their prince."
Mouths dropped open all around. Zoisite, Fukami Yasou, looked flabbergasted to learn that the Sailor Senshi they had been fighting against already considered them allies. Nephrite, Santorin Masato, was shocked that the doctor was in on all this. Kunzite, Takayama Katsuro, was just generally surprised to see them; was that… could it be… Venus?
For his part, Jadeite, Kanedai Ryuu, used his hand to cover up his eyes. "Oooh… Sailor Mars knows, doesn't she?"
Minako grinned bemusedly as she nodded. "She saw you in her fire reading before we showed up to save you."
"Oh, I am so dead…" Ryuu groaned over-dramatically, turning his pleading gaze to his brother. "Hey, Masato, feel like trading places? I'll take Beryl's torture over pissing her off any day?"
"Man, you have it bad…" Masato laughed at the man's antics, holding his sides as he did so. "Ow... even laughing hurts..." He groaned a little even as he continued to be amused at Ryuu's dramatics.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Ryuu questioned, giving his brother a put-out look.
"It means I'm not blind; she's all yours…" Masato smirked.
"I am so dead..." Ryuu groaned, throwing himself back onto the bed.
