Alice in Forks!
Kagome sat silent as the two conversed with one another.
"Our leaving didn't do you any good at all, did it?" Alice murmured.
Bella laughed once—an almost slight hysterical sound. "That was never the point, was it? It's not like you left for my benefit?"
Alice scowled at the floor for a moment. "Well... I guess I acted impulsively today. I probably shouldn't have intruded."
Kagome saw the blood drain from Bella's face.
Bella's voice became almost desperate as she pleaded for Alice not to leave her.
"All right."
...
When Alice left promising to be back in an hour, Kagome stood up.
"Kagome! Please don't go I can...I can barely hold it together. Please don't leave me right now...at least wait till she gets back," she whispered.
Sighing Kagome pulled her friend close.
Muttering into her hair, "I don't know if this is such a good—"
"Please! Don't Kagome she's here so let's focus on the now," her eyes were pleading with her.
Blowing out a puff of air she drew back from Bella. "Fine," she said finally.
A smile broke out on her face.
"Ugh okay enough with the hug. You're wet and you stink, go take a shower," she said pushing her towards the stairs.
When Bella got upstairs, sniffing herself, but couldn't find any real smell, just brine and seaweed scent of the ocean. Wonder what Alice and Kagome meant about me smelling bad.
When Bella made it downstairs she was surprised to find Kagome sleeping in her dad's manly-chair as she had dubbed it a few months back. A plaid recliner that didn't mesh with the rest of the furniture, but was his favorite chair to sit in when he watched sports.
It was strange seeing her asleep. Usually it was the other way around for them. She always fell asleep before her and Kagome would watch over her. Then remember Jacob saying Kagome had jumped off the cliff after her.
That she was most likely the reason she hadn't been so hurt.
A pang of guilt hit her in the gut.
What if she had gotten hurt because of me?
Kagome shivering brought Bella from her thoughts and she grabbed a blanket from the linen closet covering Kagome, before she went into the kitchen.
~oOo~
Groggy eyes opened after hearing Charlie and Alice converse for several minutes.
She yawned before folding the blanket setting it off to the side.
When she entered the kitchen Charlie smiled at her.
"Hey Kags, I guess you already know—"
"Yeah saw her earlier—Where's Bella?"
Charlie pointed up, "Sleepin."
Kagome nodded, "That's good," she stretched her arm behind her back till she heard a pop. Bella had told her to stay until Alice got back and Charlie was here as well. "Mmm, well I better get home. Have this assignment due right when we go back to school."
"Alright, and thanks for looking after Bella earlier. I'm sure you heard about my friend Harry.."
"Yes, I was with Bella when Billy and Sam told Jacob. I'm sorry for your loss."
Charlie inclined his head, "He was a good friend...a really good friend," he whispered his face downcast.
Kagome gave him a hug, patting his arm.
"And I'm sure he is in a better place now. We can only pray for his family now."
Charlie agreed with her. Just Kagome's presence was a comfort.
"Thank you...well I shouldn't be keeping you," Charlie said taking his dish over to the sink
"Alright well bye Charlie—Alice could I talk to you outside," she asked politely.
Alice agreed not wanting to arouse any suspicions with Charlie. They both sent him a smile before going outside onto the porch.
"Yes, Kagome what did you want to talk about."
SLAP!
Alice's head snapped to the right.
Her cheek was literally stinging.
Since becoming a vampire she had never felt such pain since she first turned. Her face was blank as she looked back at Kagome. No she wasn't surprised and after hearing what Charlie said she felt like she deserved another slap.
Kagome tried to control her temper.
"Why? Why are you back? Feeling guilty after seeing her jump off the cliff?"
Alice tried to find words, "I—"
"Don't," she yelled before lowering her voice so Charlie didn't hear. "Do you know what it's been like for her? For me Charlie having to pick up the broken pieces of her heart, her mind!"
Alice was silent.
"Of course you don't. Well I'll tell you. Almost every night she was having nightmares and I would have to sit there holding her all night as if she were a toddler in a trauma case. She was depressed for months barely said a word to anyone. Would only barely exist just so she wouldn't have to leave Forks...leave his memory. I bet you didn't even see her I mean really see her. She's lost so much weight because she eats so little now, eats only enough so Charlie won't realize she's losing weights til she breaks in half like a twig. Then Jacob come along and when she's getting better all this vampire shit keeps comes back and is biting her in the ass. And trust me I don't believe for one minute, Bella would have done what she did tonight had she not heard about Victoria being here. Yet even that could have been dealt with, but then here you are waltzing back in here all smiles and acting cozy with Charlie like you have hurt her enough."
Alice bit the inside of her lip.
"You're right," Alice whispered her eyes downcast. Charlie had really skimped out on how bad it had been.
Now that Kagome had ranted she felt a little better. Someone had to say it because neither Bella, nor Charlie would.
"Whatever, just...just go inside and keep her company," Kagome broke off, turning away from the vampire, "And Alice I swear if you hurt her again you'll have a problem on your hands understood."
The blinding power that hit assaulted her and was gone in the next second had her comply immediately. The vampire seer for once in a long time felt fear at the thought of what would happen if Kagome were her enemy.
"Of course. I didn't plan on leaving once I knew how bad it was. But you realize it may be too much for her to handle," Alice promised.
For once Kagome smiled bitterly. "No it won't. With you here she improve within a couple of days. That's how much she cares for all of you. Goodbye Alice."
"Goodby Kagome."
Alice returned inside, where Charlie had just finished putting the dishes up in the cabinet.
Kagome drove home.
She knew Bella would get better, because had the roles been reversed she would have accepted anything to have even a little pieces of her love back. Hell, she had almost made a giant shrine when she got those pictures of her now gone family.
Halfway home she began to sneeze and she knew that she was coming down with a cold.
Better stop by the convenience store and get some medicine.
