The next couple of weeks that followed the breakup were incredibly strange for everyone. No one felt normal and it was as though the entire dynamic of relations was completely thrown up in the air. It wasn't a rare occurrence for Andre to get home and find Jade just asleep on the couch. She wasn't really sleeping at night although she wasn't admitting it. She wasn't really eating either. She wasn't really doing much of anything. She said she felt okay, but Andre was reluctant to believe her.
Beck moved in with his Dad who was more than happy to have him home. The fact that his son seemed so miserable didn't phase him, he just saw it as all the more reason for them to spend some quality father-son time together. It was kind of what Beck needed, a distraction from it all. But it was when he was alone it hit him how much he missed Jade.
They were doing a pretty pristine job at avoiding each other as well, because unlike any of their previous breakups they weren't forced to be around each other in school which always ultimately led to angry making-out in the janitors closet. They didn't see each other, call each other, message, text, anything. It was a clean cut break.
One Wednesday afternoon, Tori arrived at now Jade and Andre's apartment with Milo on her hip. The one year old was ready for a fun day hanging out with Andre whilst his Mama and Jade went out for a while. It was Andre's suggestion in the first place. He was convinced Jade needed a 'girl-talk' since she was refusing to talk to him about Beck.
"Hi Milo!" Andre smiled, taking the tot from Tori's arms. "Are you here to wake up your Aunt Jade, because somebody hasn't bothered to even get out of bed yet?"
"Anda!" Milo squealed his name for Andre in delight before giggling loudly. The baby adored him and next to Tori and her parents, he was the closest thing to family he had. Andre pulled silly faces at the little boy, encouraging him to laugh more.
"I'll wake Jade," Tori chuckled, stroking Andre's arm as she walked passed. Andre took Milo into the living room to get out some toys and make up a game. Meanwhile Tori knocked on Jades door. As predicted, no one answered so she let herself in.
Jade was fast asleep on what appeared to be Beck's side of the bed. There were still many things left here that belonged to him. Photographs, books, his guitar. Even with his most important belongings gone, the room still had an essence of him. Jade had faced all the picture frames downwards so she didn't have to look at them no doubt, they were just too hard for her to look at right now.
"Jade.." Tori shook her shoulder. "Jaaaaddeee!"
"Mmmpfffff off." Jade groaned, rolling over. To Tori's dismay she realised Jade was clinging onto one of Beck's hoodies like she were hugging him. It was sad to see her like this. And even worse that she was hiding it. If she was this upset and this hurt, she needed to talk to them.
"We're going out for coffee remember? Coffee. Your favourite thing in the world. Come on!" Tori shook her again softly.
"Uggh!" Jade sat up in bed annoyed. Tori smiled, but couldn't help but notice Jade's red, puffy eyes.
"Give me ten minutes." Jade walked out of the room to the bathroom. Tori sighed. She felt kind of guilty for waking her up when she saw how tired Jade looked and hoped she hadn't just made things worse. Tori returned to the living room to find the boys already enthralled in a game of tiger vs lion and smiled seeing how happy Andre made Milo.
"Is she awake?" Andre asked as she sat down on the floor next to Milo and started playing with his toys..
"Yeah but she looks like c-r-a-p. Was she crying last night?" Tori enquired worriedly.
"If she was then I didn't hear her, but it wouldn't shock me." Andre replied honestly. He'd not seen Jade cry much since the first day Beck left but he knew she probably did in secret.
"Have you talked to Beck much recently?" Tori frowned.
"Yeah I've been talking to him most days. He's alright. About as good as Jade. He's in the denial phase." Andre claimed
"Whats the denial phase?" Tori raised an eyebrow.
"The I'm completely okay with not speaking to or seeing my girlfriend of twelve years phase." Andre clarified, "He's insisting it's for the best but won't explain why."
"It's definitely a disagreement about marriage. That was what they were fighting about before they went upstairs." Tori pointed out.
"Beck wouldn't break up with Jade because she wanted to get married—"
"No I broke up with him." Jade entered the room, heading straight to the mirror and applying some eyeliner. Tori and Andre glanced at each other and then back at Jade. She didn't even seem angry that she'd caught them talking about her, she just didn't care about anything and that was far more concerning than if she'd blown her top off and exploded. They just wanted something from her, something other than depressed.
"Ready?" Tori stood up enthusiastically. Jade looked at her as though her enthusiasm was ridiculous at best and sighed leading the way to the front door. Andre looked at Tori sympathetically.
"Good luck." He said quietly.
"Thanks, I'm gonna need it." Tori sighed. She bent down to kiss Milo goodbye on the cheek and then Andre, before following Jade out. She had exactly four hours to crack Jade and hopefully get her to talk about the break-up. She didn't like seeing her friend this hurt and she really hoped talking would help.
Beck woke up that same morning the way he did every day these days; confused and disorientated. He'd open his eyes, wonder where Jade was for a second, and then he'd remember the break-up. He'd exhale, jump in the shower, and try to get over the disappointment that was his life right now.
"Beck I'm going to the store after work do you want pizza for dinner?" His Father called him from the hall.
"Yeah sure." Beck replied. Actually he'd already eaten pizza for dinner twice that week which was the sort of thing Jade would chastise him for. She was forever insisting he needed a more varied diet although she never actually forced him to eat one. Jade didn't have to force him though, he always felt compelled to do as she said.
So the day started like any day did. Depressing. Dull. But there was going to be something different about today. Beck had an extremely important audition coming up for a lead role in a TV series. He had already made it through the first auditions, he just had to give one more great audition and beat the four other contenders to the part and he would be fully established.
After reading through his lines and double checking he had everything he needed for the interview, Beck climbed into his car and began the forty minute drive. Considering the circumstances, his mood wasn't terrible. He had a good feeling about this audition and he was looking forward to showing what he could do. It was when he was walking into the studio that things got interesting.
"Beck!" A voice he recognised but couldn't quite place called him out. Beck looked around but couldn't see anyone.
"Hey sexy hair." The voice shouted him again, Beck turned his head and suddenly found himself face to face with Rae.
"Oh hi.. Rae. Tori's friend right?"
"Don't tell me you've forgotten about me?" Rae giggled girlishly. "Still with the crazy girlfriend?"
"Actually no." Beck regretted to inform her. He saw the gleam in her eye and the delight at this news and it repulsed him.
"Aww I'm so sorry. What happened?" Rae did an awful job at feigning sympathy.
"Just a big disagreement really.. it doesn't matter. What are you doing here anyway?" Beck changed the subject.
"I work here. I'm on film crew and I also do all the shoots for the actors. Are you auditioning?" Rae asked eagerly.
"I will be.. In exactly twenty minutes so I better go read over my script." Beck pointed over his shoulder to the waiting hall. Rae looked slightly disappointed but nodded and smiled again, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Good luck."
Beck smiled gratefully and turned in the direction of the double doors to wait for his audition call. He hadn't seen Rae in over a year and she still made him nervous. There was just something a little off about her and the fact she was so anti-Jade annoyed him. One thing was for sure though, if he got this job, he'd be working with her every day.
I know, I know, I hate Rae too but we all knew she's a sneaky schsdhaksjdgsdfdshf and she was obviously going to take advantage of bade's little rough spot.. What do you think will happen? Do you think Rae will make a move? Do you think Tori will get through to Jade about being so depressed? Wah.
Seperately.. I really hate my pen name :( but is it too late to change it now? Will you all forget about me if I change it? Haha. Vanillaandtoothpaste is just so weeeird. I don't even know what I'd change it to, but if any of you have any good ideas let me know :) Love yas. xxx
