Not seeing auras is like being blind. It's like waking up one morning and not seeing the colours or the shapes, anything. It's like waking up one morning and not being able to feel or to smell. I couldn't see auras anymore and I hated it. It's funny because I used to see the world around me as a normal person, with no auras, no fortunetelling visions of the near future. Now, I felt like I lost everything, now, I felt like I lost my identity as a Protector. I don't even think that I'm the Protector anymore. It's funny to think that somewhere deep down, I didn't want any of this but now I would give anything to have it back. These last few days, I've tried to find something about this but I found nothing. Derek helped me a lot, trying to reassure me. He told me that it was probably temporary situation but I didn't believe his words. Adding to this, Matt's dead which means the Kanima has another master. Gerard's his new master. Victoria Argent had been bitten by Derek and commit suicide because she'd rather die than being turned into a werewolf. It might be in the hunter code too. So, yeah, life's rough for me, right now. And I don't have time to dwell on it, so I guess I just have to keep going and hope to get my power back at some point. But right now the most important thing in my life, according to Bob Finstock was the lacrosse game that was coming tonight. I spent all day, helping Finstock with the installation. Getting everything ready for the game, helped to relax and to think about something else.
I didn't say anything to Derek about Gerard's being sick. It never came up and I was too focused in getting my powers back. Because not only I lost the faculty to see auras but my super strength had disappeared too. I went to Bob's office when I saw that Scott's name wasn't on the list for the game tonight.
"Bob, do you mind telling why McCall is not playing tonight?" I asked him slapping the list on his desk.
"He's failing three classes, Stapley." He replied.
"Since when do you care about this? You're ready to let guys with cerebral commotion play to win the game. And now you're benching him because he's failing." I ranted.
"You're right, Stapley, I would let him play but it's not my decision." He answered.
"Whose decision is this?" I questioned.
"The Principal." He replied. "Now, get out and let the boys in." He shoved me out of his office. He slammed the door behind me.
"What are you planning, Gerard?" I thought out loud.
I did as the Coach asked me; I let the boys in to get ready. I went to my classroom to grab my co-coach uniform. I went to the bathroom to change into my uniform. I went back to the lockers room. The boys were all in their Lacrosse jersey. Mama McCall was standing in the back next to Stiles. I joined them.
"Good Morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will be joining others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind." Coach started dressed in an airman jersey.
"What?" Mama McCall exclaimed next to me.
"Yeah, I know, it's just a lacrosse game." I whispered to her.
"Mankind that word should have new meaning for all of us today." He continued.
"What the hell is he talking about?" Mama McCall asked me. I didn't know, so, I tapped Stiles' shoulder and asked him the question.
"He does this every year." Stiles replied.
"Seriously?" Melissa asked him.
"Yeah." He answered.
"We are fighting for our right to live." The players cheered.
"Wait a minute! I know this line." I said scrunching my face.
"Yeah, it's the speech from Independence Day." Stiles confirmed what I was suspecting. I started to hum the background music that goes with the speech.
"But as the day the world declared in one voice." The Coach continued.
"Coach's favourite movie." Stiles said to Melissa.
"We will not go quietly into the night!" I continued humming the music.
"What is she doing?" I heard her asked to Stiles.
"No idea but that's new." He replied.
"Today we celebrate our independence day." The Coach finished. All the players cheered one more time.
"You have to admit, though, it does do the trick." I said clapping.
"Well spoken, Coach!" Gerard appeared from behind Bob. I stopped my clapping. "I might have chosen something with a little more historical value, but there's no denying your passion." He continued while I glared at him. "And while I haven't been here long, there's no denying my pride in having a winning team for this school. I know you'll be brilliant tonight, even with only one co-captain leading you. Now I'm your principal, but I'm also a fan. So don't think I'll be content to watch you merely beat this team. Get out of here and murder them." Wise choice of words, Gerard. Gerard left the locker room and I followed him with my eyes. I could have followed him but it wouldn't be wise to confront him upfront. But I need to know more.
Before going to the field, I went to the parking lot to call Derek. He didn't answer. I left a message to tell him that Jackson and Gerard were both there at the game. I also asked him to call me back. I then went to the Lacrosse field to witness Stiles running to his position on the field and Sheriff Stillinski having an awkward moment but it was a sweet moment. I sat down next to Scott ready to ask him if he knew anything about whatever Gerard's plan was. I didn't have time to ask him anything that Scott stiffened next to me. From my position I could see Gerard standing away from the bleachers, he was talking. I got up to make my way to him but Scott pulled me back to my seat. I asked him what's going on. He held his hand up to silence me. When he was done listening to whatever Gerard was telling him. He explained to me that Gerard has threatened to kill someone if we don't give him what he wants. I asked him what or rather Gerard wants. He said Derek. I asked him why but he didn't answer, or he couldn't tell me, yet.
"You don't have to tell me. I already know that Gerard's dying." I told him looking right into his eyes. "There's only one reason why he would want Derek. He wants Derek because he's an alpha." He only nodded confirming what I just said. "Scott, whatever your plan is better be a hell of a good plan. We both know he's going to wreak havoc once he got what he wants."
"Trust me." Was all he said before we focused our attention back on the game.
We were losing. We were being slaughtered. It wasn't a game anymore, it was war. They were killing us. And Coach didn't want Scotty Wolf to play. We're going to lose this game. Plus, we had until the last thirty seconds of the game for Scott to do whatever Gerard asked him to do. The referee whistled and Scott moved to go on the field but the Coach stopped him and pushed him back into his seat. He was aware that we were dying but he wasn't going to let Scott play. Isaac sat down next to me on the bench.
"You came to help." Scott said when he saw him.
"I came to win." He replied. I smirked at his answer. We all three turned to Gerard, who looked at us in surprise.
"Now, Scott remind me why I can't go and talk to him?" I asked keeping my eyes fixed on Gerard.
"The promise he made to kill the people we care about." He retorted.
"Right! Do any of you have a good plan?" I asked to the two betas.
"Right now, it's pretty much just keep Jackson from killing anyone." Scott sighed in defeat.
"Well, that might be easier if you're actually in the game." Isaac stated. "We have to make it so coach has no choice but to play you."
"How do we do that? He's got a bench full of guys he can use before he ever puts me on the field." Scott countered.
"Unless there are no guys anymore." I said without thinking. Scott looked at Isaac.
"Can you do it without putting anyone in the hospital?" He asked the second beta.
"I can try." With this answer he put his helmet on.
Isaac went on the field. The game was on again. As one of the Beacon Hills High players ran to core, Isaac intercepted him. The Coach yelled "Lahey!" and put another player on the field. More minutes passed and another player was out while another one took over his place. The bench was emptying slowly. Soon enough the only player left would be Scott. Needless to tell you that Coach wasn't too happy with this. Anyway more minutes passed in the game. I was biting my nails, a habit that I had lost or so I thought and currently keeping an eye on Gerard. All of the sudden, Jackson attacked Isaac and sent him harshly on the ground. Scott and I ran up to him and I crouched down next to him.
"It's not broken but I can't move it." Isaac said to us. Jackson has paralyzed him.
"Son of the bitch!" I swore under my breath.
"I think Jackson nicked me 'cause I can feel it spreading." Isaac before he was taken away on the stretcher. I saw Scott looking at Gerard as if he was listening.
"What is he saying this time?" I asked. He didn't have to answer before the Coach came over to us. He brought his gear to Scott.
"Either you're in or we forfeit." He said to Scott shoving his stick and helmet in his arms.
"Hey, something's happening, isn't it?" Mama McCall said as she reached us grabbing Scott's arm. "Something more than a Lacrosse game?"
"You should go." He said to his mother.
"Oh, I'm not going anywhere." She replied. "And everything that I said before, forget it. All of it. Okay? If you can do something to help, then you do it. You have to." She said to him.
"I will." He nodded.
"Come on, Melissa." I said taking her by the shoulders. "Let's go to the bench."
Mama McCall and I walked back to the bench and I sat down on the bench while Melissa took her seat between the Sheriff and Lydia. I ignored what Gerard said to Scott and I forgot to ask but I knew it wasn't something good. I tried to keep an eye on Jackson and Gerard but it was difficult. So I made the easiest choice, I kept an eye on the deadliest creature between the both. And at the moment it was Jackson. I watched the guy with anxiety and kept checking up my phone waiting for Derek's call. I don't know how it happened or when it happened but Stiles was now running with every intention to score which he did. However, I didn't join the celebration when I heard the Coach asking where was McCall. I didn't know where Scott was but I knew that Gerard was gone too. There were four minutes left in the game. As I said I kept an eye on Jackson because it's the only thing I could do right now. Stiles was scoring more and more. The minutes were flying by and my nails were no more. Thirty seconds left, Stiles scored for the last time, Scott came back to the field. Still no Gerard and Jackson were walking in the middle of the field after the end of the game was announced. He took his gloves off. I realised that I was walking to him when I saw his eyes turning into their reptilian shapes. I stopped when his hands. Suddenly, all the lights went off. Screams filled the air and people were running, panicking. Jackson stood still. He moved his claws to his own chest and stabbed himself. My eyes widened in surprise and I ran to him crouching down. A crowd started to form around us. I lifted it up his jersey. The lights went back up. There was blood everywhere. The Coach yelled for the players to get back and give him some air. Melissa soon joined us. I gave her room to examine Jackson. There was only one thought running through my mind was why would Gerard do something like that? Why would he kill the only advantage he had on us? "Where's Stiles?" I heard the Sheriff asked. "Where's my son?" Oh, no, he didn't.
