Chapter 25
"Thank you very much, Mayor Emanuel. I look forward to seeing you on Friday."
"I look forward to seeing you as well, Mr. Governor. Take care."
"You as well," Peter replied, politely ending the phone call. He was happy that he would get another well-known public face at the State Dinner in four days.
Outside Peter's office, Eli was walking through the halls taking care of some paperwork when he got paged by the receptionist. "Yes, Pamela?" he said roughly.
"Mr. Gold, a package just arrived for the governor that needs your signature."
"What?" Eli asked, slightly confused since he was unaware of any package that had been due to arrive. "Who's it from?"
"Doesn't say, but I've already had it run through the materials detector and there's nothing dangerous in it. Just a lot of paper."
"Okay," Eli replied, turning off the pager and making his way to the front reception desk. Sure enough, there was a thick package addressed to the governor sitting on the granite, with a UPS delivery guy leaving against the desk. "Just your signature please, Mr. Gold," he said politely.
"Thank you," Eli replied with one his fake smiles as he signed on the small, darkly tinted touch pad. The UPS delivery dude swiftly left the building, and Eli said a quick thank you to Pamela as he picked up the package and headed in the direction of Peter's office. He observed that it wasn't super heavy, but the address information looked like it had been written with purpose. He checked his watch and observed that it was almost noon and there was no sign of Alicia. He knocked on the door before entering the office, and found Peter smiling at his desk.
"You look happy about something," Eli commented.
"Oh, not really, Mayor Emanuel just RSVP'd to the State Dinner."
"Fabulous," Eli said, "Good job getting him to come. What did you bribe him with?"
Peter chuckled and responded, "Just plenty of whisky and a fun time."
Eli got back to his current order of business and handed Peter the package that he was holding. "This was just delivered to the front desk. I don't know what it is or who it's from. Were you expecting something?"
"Not that I know of," Peter replied, suspicion on his tongue. "Have you seen Alicia? She should be here by now. We were going to have lunch."
"I'll step outside and call her while you open that," Eli said politely. He speedily exited the room and Alicia's phone started ringing as he closed the door. Eli let out a groan of frustration when her phone went to voicemail.
Meanwhile, inside his office, Peter carefully undid the tape on the package and tipped it up, allowing the decently sized stack of paper inside it to fall onto the table. He turned it around so he could read it, and when he did, he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Documents for Divorce.
Filed by Alicia Florrick for divorce from Peter Florrick.
Suddenly angrier than he had ever been, he shoved the papers back into their envelope and dialed the number for his valet. After they picked up, he said, "I need a car to take me to my wife's apartment right now."
As he stormed out of his office and towards the open air, Eli stopped him in his tracks. He could see that Peter was fuming. "What the heck is going on? What was inside?"
"Nothing to worry about," Peter lied, pushing past Eli and heading towards the car waiting for him.
