"Would you like some more soup, Yuki?" Kagome was glad to see the toddler's big, amber eyes bright and clear. Mikazuki was right—Sesshomaru's healing abilities are going to come in handy with young children. Her eyes strayed sideways. Airi was sleeping happily in the curve of Sesshomaru's arm; her small face was pressed into the curve of his elbow as she slept.

"Na-uh," Yuki yawned. Mayu had yet to allow him out of her reach. She still held him desperately. She hasn't looked at Sesshomaru once in the past few days. Not that I blame her—she practically shut down outside when she saw his little body on the ground. She has spent so long expecting something terrible to happen to one of her children. I hope she punches him in the face. Inuyasha might have provoked him, but he responded. He is equally to blame.

"You can sleep, Yuki-chan." Mayu pressed her cheek to Yuki's head, cradling him against her chest. She began to hum a lullaby of some sort. Her head was turned away from the taiyoukai staring at her.

It's going to be a long night, Kagome sighed. She left Misaki cradled in the aged arms of her great-grandmother. She removed the bucket from its place and stepped outside. I might as well get some water. If I am going to be sleeping here again, I want some water for my face in the morning. I am still too upset with Inuyasha to go home.

The night was warm and muggy despite the recent storms—she avoided the puddles that remained. She fanned herself to relieve the moisture on her skin. She followed the path that was slowly being formed to the northern fork of the river. This part of the river drifted south towards Kaede's village and the waterfall pool at the southern end ideal for bathing. She dipped her bucket into the water. This river does not exist in my time. If this house is actually built on the shrine's land then this river will dry up. The landscape will be constructed to form a hill that overlooks downtown Tokyo. Why would anyone do that? The land is perfect as it is.

It was one of the thousand-and-one questions that she had about the future. She would live out her days before she was even born. Weird.

I miss Inuyasha.

She climbed the stairs towards the brightly lit main room of Sesshomaru's home. When she entered, Mayu and the children were missing from the front room. Sesshomaru did not acknowledge her presence—he continued to stare into the fire.

"She and the children are in the first bedchamber." Mikazuki answered her questioning gaze. "She is still upset with this fool."

No kidding. Kagome went to sit next to her. Misaki was resting happily in her arms. The baby had her face pressed against her great-grandmother's withered bosom. Mikazuki hummed gently, running the pads of her fingers across the baby's face.

"Have you spoken to your husband?" The question startled her. She shook her head. "I do not understand you young creatures. You love him, do you not? He is outside in that strange tree across the clearing."

Inuyasha has been sitting in the Goshinboku for 3 days. I know he feels terrible. I want to bury my face in his shoulder and make up. But how can I? He said such nasty things about Mayu! My sweet, loving husband practically called her a whore!

"And you—when are you going to apologize to your young lady?" Mikazuki used her walking stick to poke Sesshomaru's shin. "You let your temper get the best of you. You have upset her."

"I will do no such thing."

"Your brother insulted her honor—you were right to defend her." Mikazuki sighed. Sesshomaru lifted his eyes. "Inuyasha has quite a vicious tongue. But you are the elder brother. It is your responsibility to set an example. You should have been mature enough to end your quarrel or to move away from your little ones."

"Your words mean nothing, old crone."

"Do not bark at me. Your guilt is quite evident. Not only are you the elder brother but you lead this Pack. You let your anger overwhelm your better judgement. Do you want your young lady to look at you again?" Mikazuki's pale, thin eyebrow lifted. Sesshomaru's face did not flicker. I really hope that she knows what she's doing. "They are owed an apology. You frightened your young family."

"It is Inuyasha's doing."

"You are equally to blame. I doubt that Inuyasha would be so vicious without cause. You know why he is upset, don't you?" Mikazuki's voice lowered. Does she seriously think Sesshomaru is that self-aware? Even I'm not sure what made Inuyasha so upset and I'm his wife! "Think. Why is Inuyasha so angry?"

"Inuyasha is always angry."

"Inuyasha has been kind and compassionate in my presence. Kagome says that he became enraged after seeing you with this babe. Why is that?" Even Kagome lowered her gaze under her elder's scrutiny. I have been wondering that myself. I know Inuyasha still carries a lot of rage towards his brother for the way he's treated him. He must be angry with Sesshomaru for hiding Mikazuki, for abandoning him. "Sesshomaru."

"The hanyou is not my concern."

"He is your concern, you overgrown brat." Mikazuki's tone sharpened. "He is your blood and bone—you are allies against all the world. He protected your family while your mother held you as her helpless captive. He fought your mother's men when they came for your children. He rescued you from your prison."

"He could not defeat her himself."

"Yuki missed you. He went to rescue you!" Kagome gasped. "Do you seriously think that's why he wanted to save you? You arrogant jerk!" Mikazuki's hand rested on hers; she felt the old woman's bones squeeze hers gently. Oh, he makes me so mad. They're both so stupid. Why can't they just admit that they love each other? If they don't love each other, why not just ignore one another? Why continue to fight?

Mikazuki's hands were small, thin and cold. At least they have Mikazuki. Misaki might not have the opportunity to meet Mama or Grandpa or Souta or my father or Inuyasha's father but Mikazuki is a piece of the puzzle I never expected. She is wise like Mama. She has a strong heart.

"You know quite well why you dislike him so." Mikazuki kept her voice strong. "The way he carries himself. The way he moves. The angry tone of his voice. The tilt of his head when he is thinking. He behaves like my son."

Inuyasha behaves like his father?

"Hn."

"You cannot blame him for your father's choices. I know that you care for him." Sesshomaru's eyes cut towards her face. "If you truly hated him your brother would be dead. We both know that. Despite his flaws Inuyasha is loyal, strong and caring. He would never betray those he loves. He would not hesitate to put himself in harm's way. Even for you."

"Enough, fool. I am tired of your voice." Sesshomaru rose swiftly. He crossed the room too quickly for Kagome's eyes. He opened the sliding door to the bedroom where Mayu and the children were. It closed as quickly behind him.

"My grandsons are idiots." Mikazuki's eyes closed briefly.

"They're stubborn as mules." Neither one of them wants to admit their feelings to the other. Their stupid male egos are starting to drive me insane. Why can't they just admit that they don't hate each other? "Did their father have as much ego as they do?"

"Sesshomaru has the combined ego of his mother and father." Mikazuki rubbed her fingers against her forehead. "He is more prideful than my son. At least my son would occasionally apologize."

"Inuyasha apologizes sometimes, when he really messes up." She exhaled. Misaki was still sleeping in Mikazuki's arm. She looks completely at peace. "You are good with babies."

"My son was not my first—I lost several children in my youth." She looked down at Misaki. The baby's hands curled. "I failed as a mother. I outlived all of my children."

"Oh. I'm sorry." I had no idea.

"I know the pain of losing a child. I know what Mayu fears." Mikazuki's eyes were so old and sad. "When you live with that fear, it can do things to your mind. It nearly broke my heart when you brought Yuki inside. If they do not listen they will repeat mistakes unnecessarily."

"What are we supposed to do? Neither one of them will bend." Inuyasha is too defensive to ever talk to Sesshomaru about his real feelings. Sesshomaru is too proud to admit that he HAS feelings.

"Inuyasha must apologize to Mayu for insulting her honor. Sesshomaru must make amends to his family." Mikazuki rocked Misaki gently. "My grandson was protecting his den the only way he knows; the elder brother will hear nothing until his young lady forgives him."

"I'm sure Inuyasha wants to apologize." He must be lonely outside. I know that he has been to see Kaede—Shippo told me so. I miss him so much. "He has a good heart. I think he was angry at Sesshomaru. He always gets mad when Inuyasha talks about her."

"Tell me more about their history, Kagome-chan. Tell me every detail. I am sure there is much to discuss." Mikazuki soothed the baby gently.

"Of course I will. Just let me check on Kilala first." Kagome patted her arm before standing up. Kilala is crying; she might need to go outside. She followed the hallway towards the last door, gently easing it open. Kilala met her at the door, turning in circles.

"Hello Kilala. You are a good mother." She rubbed the enormous nekoyoukai's head. The five kittens were piled on the bedding in the corner. She could hear their tiny purring from the doorway. As she watched, one tiny yellow kitten stirred to bat the ears of its closest sibling. They are too cute. I cannot wait until it is time to take them outside. They will look so adorable ambling across the grass. Maybe Misaki will be walking steadily by then.

"Are you hungry?" Her water bowl is low. Kilala's weight pushed against her legs. Kagome scratched her back deeply, hearing the cat's throaty noises of satisfaction. The nekoyoukai slipped through the opening in the door. Kagome followed her into the hallway. Her friend meowed loudly outside the door where Sesshomaru and his family were. "What's wrong, Kilala?" Why is she scratching at their door? Buyo would scratch at Mama's door to be let in. She must still be worried about Yuki. She loves all of the children. "They're perfectly safe, Kilala. I promise."

Kilala scratched, sticking her nose into the small crevasse.

I could open the door a peek, couldn't I? Mayu isn't speaking to Sesshomaru—she won't even look at him. So why would he follow her into the room? The children have not been out of his sight in two days. Is he trying to comfort her or wear her down?

Maybe he is just worried, Kagome.

Kagome rapped her knuckles on the door gently. She received no answer. Kilala lifted her eyes beseechingly. "OK, Kilala. OK." She slid the door open. Kilala pushed her head and shoulders through the opening before it was completely opened. Kagome counted to three before looking inside. Kilala moved to the far side of the bedding to sniff at the sleeping children. The purr in her chest grew deeper. She licked Yuki's forehead fondly where it showed above the bedding. Before Kagome could protest she climbed upon it, lying behind Mayu.

Kilala loves Yuki and Airi like her own kittens. She worries about them. Why do I find that so surprising? Kagome scratched at her arm. She allowed her eyes to slowly stray towards the taiyoukai sitting against the wall. He does not look happy to see me. He came in here to escape his grandmother.

"I'm sorry. Kilala was worried." She felt her cheeks flush. He remained silent. She watched Kilala rest her nose against Mayu's back for warmth.

"The old woman is a fool." The words were spoken quietly.

"She loves you. Your grandmother just wants the best for you." She slid the door gently closed. She sank down to her knees. "You heard what she said to me. I know how good your hearing is."

"I will not allow my children to die."

"I know that you will do your best. But accidents happen." Especially when you have gigantic brawls with Inuyasha. She smoothed her hands over her skirt. "She wants you to be happy." Yuki turned in his sleep. He buried his face into Airi's shoulder. Kilala lifted her head to verify that the children were safe and warm before settling again. They are so good together—I still cannot figure out how Sesshomaru's children are so adorable.

"Mayu is not." She met his eyes. Such sadness. He must feel terribly guilty.

"I was worried sick about Misaki because she fell and got a bruise. Mothers are like that. Mayu has been afraid for a long time that her babies would die. She just needs to reassure herself that Yuki is fine. It was only a bruise to begin with." I wish I could reach out and hold his hand. I would with anyone else. "They are safe in her arms now. It will take time."

"She is different." Sesshomaru tilted his head.

"Different?" What does that mean?

"She was bold like our son. Fearless. Content." The words were spoken as fact. Still, there was something…more. Yuki is as fearless as they come. We assumed it was something he inherited from Sesshomaru. Airi is more like him, reserved and quiet. Still, I cannot imagine the Mayu he describes. Mayu does not like to look anyone in the eye. She does not like to bring attention to herself. She is very quiet. Yuki is never silent. She swallowed as the moments went by. He expected an answer. She did her best to smile reassuringly, despite her doubts.

"I am sure she is just nervous. Everything here is new to her."

"My mother changed her." I really do not know how to respond to that. She lowered her gaze. I tried to talk to Mayu before; she only told me details. She refuses to tell anyone about what it must have been like…to be held prisoner, to have her children threatened, to be made a slave in your own body…to be alone and afraid.

"I do not know how to help Mayu. She doesn't want to remember." She licked her lips. "When I met Inuyasha, he didn't want to talk to me either. He yelled and bitched at me. It took years because he couldn't deal with facing his pain." Kilala lifted her head, resting her chin on the divot of Mayu's waist. The cat's large eyes blinked at them both. "What is it, Kilala?"

"What must I do?" He blinked!

"Just…reassure her that the children are safe. Make an apology to her. A real one. With words." She shifted her hands, hunching her shoulders up. "She needs people that she can trust. She needs to know that she has a place. Where she's safe. You'll have to forgive her when she lashes out, but she will do it because she's in pain. When she starts to believe, she will open up. It will take time."

Amber eyes considered her. "How can you be certain?" Kagome pushed her palms against the floor. Under his gaze, she went to stroke Kilala's head. The cat's enormous purr was comforting. She moved towards the doorway.

"Girl—how do you know?"

"Because that's what I did with Inuyasha." She ran her hand over the smooth, warm doorframe. "Good night, Kilala. Watch over your people." The cat's purr doubled in volume as she slid the door closed, leaving space for Kilala's paw.

Helping stray, damaged inuyoukai is starting to be my calling. What I told you is what we have been doing for you too. We brought you into our family. We showed you that you can trust us, despite your attitude. Now you feel comfortable enough to ask for my help.

"With a small twist…" Kagome marveled at the curls hanging over her shoulders. Mayu leaned back and dipped her comb into the river. "See? The technique is simple enough. Airi has been learning."

"I'm glad you're a real girl." Mayu frowned. "That sounded wrong. What I meant—I had to teach Sango how to gossip about boys. She grew up with other taijiya. They were all men. I used to talk about hair and boys and clothes with my mother. It would be nice to talk about 'girl-stuff' with someone who gets it."

"Are you not close with your mother?"

"She lives a long way from here. We are very close. I just cannot travel to see her." There is no sense telling her about the Well yet. Mayu nodded as she reached for Airi's hair. The girl hugged the cloth doll to her chest. Yuki was still digging holes along the river with Shippo's help. She dipped her comb into the oil by her knees and began to curl Airi's hair. "Did your mother do your hair when you were little?"

"Indeed. She was a very fashionable person." Mayu tossed Airi's hair a bit to give it volume. She twirled the comb through the ends of Airi hair.

"And Airi inherited her green eyes from her?" If what Inuyasha told me is correct—Mayu's are blue and Sesshomaru's are gold.

"Yes." Mayu's lips elongated the syllables. She was preoccupied with Airi's silky locks. "Why is your hair so tangled? What have you been doing?"

"Yuki did." The child pouted.

"He is a creative little scoundrel." Mayu giggled as Yuki's head popped up from the depths of his newest hole. The boy's face was smeared over with dirt. "I will fill in his holes when he is not looking, miko-sama—else people will think that there is a mad squirrel on the loose."

"And he just had a bath." He looks so silly. The smile on Mayu's face warmed her heart. She looked for her own baby; Misaki was banging her small palms against Kohaku's knees. The boy had volunteered to entertain her rather precocious infant.

"How are you doing? Is Sango keeping you busy?" Kohaku's cheeks flushed. "I know that she is happy you're here. It is nice to spend time with you."

"Thank you Kagome." The quiet boy allowed Misaki to grip the fingers of his hand. She lifted her hand a bit; Kohaku lifted his arm in turn. She squealed happily in satisfaction.

"You are a natural. She likes you."

His cheeks flushed more deeply. "I am not doing anything."

"She would cry if she did not like you. Babies are intuitive—like dogs." Mayu winked as the boy fidgeted awkwardly. She smoothed Airi's bangs. The girl sat up proudly as her mother finished her hair. "There."

"You look lovely, Airi-chan," she praised. Her green eyes lit up. She smiled, fidgeting with the fabric covering her legs.

"Lak Mo-ther?"

"Beautiful." The little girl glowed with pride. She tilted her head back. I wanted to be pretty like my mother growing up too. Mayu bent down to kiss Airi's brow.

Kagome lifted her eyes in the sunlight. Inuyasha was walking towards them on the grass. She held her breath as he removed his hands from within his sleeves. Misaki squealed. Using Kohaku's legs the toddler ambled towards her father. He sank to his knees without hesitation. There was great relief in his posture as he scooped her into his arms.

"Hey kid." Inuyasha squeezed her gently. The baby squealed happily; her ears flickered. "I missed you too." He pressed his lips against her hair between her ears. Her tiny hands reached for his face, grabbing onto his nose.

"I think I'm going to find Miroku." Kohaku stood up suddenly.

"Me too! Race you there!" Shippo was already darting away. Kohaku followed after the retreating kitsune. Cowards—they think we are going to get into a giant fight. She glared at Shippo as he turned around.

"I think we should find your father." Mayu stood with Airi on her hip. "Yuki, it is time to—"

"Hold up!" Inuyasha moved forward. "Just…wait, ok? I have something to say." Mayu met her eyes. Don't panic. Don't avoid Inuyasha like you did Sango. "I'm…I'm sorry. About what I said to Sesshomaru. It had nothing to do with you. I was just trying to piss him off."

Inuyasha! I am so proud of you. She couldn't help smiling at the sober, honest expression on his face. He really has matured.

"There is no need to apologize." Mayu blinked, straightening Airi's clothing.

"Yeah…I do." Inuyasha's arm tightened around Misaki. "It was stupid. I wanted to piss him off. I knew insulting you would make him fight me. It's my fault Yuki got hurt. If anything happened to Misaki…I would be furious. You have every right to hate me."

"I do not hate you." Mayu answered softly. "You and the miko-sama protected Yuki-chan. I am in your debt."

"That doesn't make what I did acceptable." Inuyasha's eyes shifted to meet hers. "Kagome was right to be angry. I was an idiot."

"Bite fuzzy ear?" Airi looked between them. "Mo-ther?" The question made Kagome cover her mouth to hide her smile. She is so serious!

"Why does she always want to bite me?" Inuyasha blinked.

"Airi-chan knows when I am upset. She is my little warrior." Mayu patted Airi's arm. "No, there is no need to bite 'fuzzy ear'. He is our friend."

"Yasha?" Yuki tugged on his hakama. "Up?" Inuyasha met Mayu's eyes. She nodded slightly. He wants permission. She isn't angry with him. Why isn't she angry? I would be furious with Inuyasha if the roles were reversed. Still, he DID apologize. Maybe she isn't the type to hold a grudge.

"Yasha!" Yuki beamed.

"Are you sure you aren't mad? I'll let you have a free swing at me." Inuyasha rested his cheek on Yuki's head.

"That is not necessary." Mayu's lips twitched. "I am sure Airi-chan will bite you later despite my answer to prove her fierceness."

"Keh." Airi was still staring. I think she is right. I think Airi is going to bite Inuyasha anyway. How adorable.

"Kagome?" Hopeful golden eyes turned in her direction. Dammit, he's cute when he is vulnerable. She took a deep breath before lifting her arms towards him. Her hanyou husband deposited Yuki into his mother's arms before running towards her. The feel of his arms around her waist eased the strain in her heart. She buried her face into the warm, furry texture of his haori. She could hear Misaki making happy sounds between them. "Kagome."

"It's ok." She reached up to kiss him. "We're ok."

"I missed you." Inuyasha kissed her jaw. Up close, she could see the faint bruising beneath his eyes. He hasn't been sleeping. "I'm sorry for being so stupid."

"Why did you want to make Sesshomaru angry?" She glanced over his shoulder. Mayu is gone. We're alone.

"I…it doesn't matter." Inuyasha shook his head, making his hair flare outwards. "Will you come home now?"

"Yes." She sighed. He wants to go home. He helped her stand up with the baby. He crouched to allow her to climb aboard his back with Misaki tucked safely into her chest. Misaki squeaked happily as Inuyasha began to move and the wind stirred their hair. "Inuyasha, I think this is the first time you've ever carried us."

"You're right." He glanced back. She giggled as Misaki's hands buried into her father's mane. "Is she ok?"

"She's a natural." She tightened her hold on Inuyasha's shoulder; his arms readjusted around her legs simultaneously. He is thinking the same thing—we have to protect Misaki. Inuyasha slowed down gradually as they approached their home. He crouched once more to allow her to disembark. Misaki's face was bright and happy when her father turned to inspect her. He is a good father. He exhaled with relief when the baby laughed, sucking on her own knuckles.

"That was nothing. Just wait until you're a bit bigger, kid." Inuyasha's face brightened. "She's brave—did you see? Nothing scares her."

"Inuyasha," she hurried to keep up with him. "Inuyasha, we have to talk. I need to know why you were so angry with Sesshomaru."

"Kagome, that's—just leave it alone." Inuyasha lifted his nose into the air. "It's safe. We can go inside."

"Inuyasha, he was just playing with her." He's avoiding me. This conversation will be like pulling teeth for him. "Why did that upset you? Inuyasha!"

"Why can't we just forget about it?" Inuyasha reached for their bucket sitting outside. "I'm going to get water. I won't be long."

"Inuyasha!" She stomped her foot as her husband scampered off. Misaki rested her head against her chest. "I know, sweetie. Your father is having a hard time with something. I'll get to the bottom of it." She ducked into their house. She set Misaki down as she searched the shelves for her hairbrush. It was one of the few things she still had from the Modern Era. She ran the bristles through Misaki's hair. "There. Isn't that better? I'm glad my curls held. Although Inuyasha didn't notice. Men, you know?"

Misaki's ears twitched. She made a sound.

Why would Sesshomaru playing with Misaki upset him so? Then he started bad-mouthing Mayu. She tsked her tongue at the state of the bedding. I am going to have to wash everything again. I would know those muddy footprints anywhere. This entire place could do with a good thorough cleaning. The window needs washing. These floors need polishing. The cellar probably needs to be reorganized and mopped out. Inuyasha will have to help me move those crates. I'll need more water too.

"Hey Misaki." Inuyasha carefully avoided their toddling daughter. He set down the water bucket. Their dark-haired daughter moved forward to grip the rim of the bucket. The baby slapped her hands against the water.

"Inuyasha? Will you get me the mop from the cellar? And my brushes? And the rags?" She looked around the room. "We need to clean this place." I do not have to meet Kaede until after lunch. It would be a good way to spend the rest of the morning.

"Sure." Inuyasha stretched. He opened the latch that led to the cellar before dropping in. She listened to the bumps and noises. I cannot just ask him why he's upset. Inuyasha will deflect my every question. So how do I figure out what is wrong?

"Here." Inuyasha set their supplies on the platform before leaping out. He closed the trapdoor, testing it. He listens to my warnings—we cannot have Misaki falling down there.

So she began to clean their home. She wiped down 'her' window while Inuyasha took the bedding outside. She swept the floor while Misaki watched and Inuyasha dusted the high corners. She mopped the floor while Inuyasha took Misaki outside to beat their knit rug free of dust. She emptied the dirty water outside. She wiped the growing dust from their shelves before turning. Now only the bedding is left to wash and dry.

"Watch the baby!" Kagome found them at the river. Inuyasha was knee deep in the water; Misaki sat atop their pile of laundry. She went forward quickly to prevent Misaki falling in. "Inuyasha, you have to be careful."

"She was nowhere near the edge." He rolled his eyes. "Are you going to help me with this stuff or not?"

"I will wash if you will hang it on the line." Lifting all that wet fabric makes my arms hurt. Inuyasha is so much stronger than me.

"Deal." Inuyasha stripped off his coat. He laid it on the ground for Misaki. Their baby was yawning. "Good girl—that's it." She used her bow and arrow to create a line. Misaki was lying on her side as Inuyasha wrapped her up. She took the first piece of their bedding and began the laborious process of washing the soft fabric.

"Inuyasha?" She passed him the first layer. "Why do you think Sesshomaru reacts the way he does when you insult Mayu? Does he love her?"

"I dunno. I don't think so." Inuyasha turned his back to her. His lifted arms hid his face from her view.

"Mikazuki-sama thinks so. That's why she's living there instead of here. To keep an eye on him." Last night, she seemed so worried for him. She told me that she wanted to be near Sesshomaru. "When he brought Mayu to visit her, he practically asked her to come here with him. She thinks he wanted her help." Her husband remained silent as he worked slowly on his task. "She thinks he wanted her to meet you and the babies."

"Keh—I wouldn't count on it." Her husband reached for the next sheet.

"Mikazuki-sama was the only kind influence in his childhood before her memories started to drift. Your father spent so long fighting demons that Sesshomaru idolized him. He believes more in the legends than the person that he was. He ran away when he was a teenager and has been on his own since."

"Is that what she told you?"

"Sesshomaru thought you were the favorite child because your father gave you Tetsusaiga. Mikazuki also says you have a lot of his mannerisms. Can you believe that? But neither one of us thinks that Sesshomaru hates you anymore." Inuyasha's shoulders stiffened. "He has never really known a real family. She thinks that he is following your example. He kidnapped me because he was too proud to just ask for help. He does not understand women. But now he asks me questions. That's something, isn't it?"

Her husband remained silent.

"He spent his entire adolescence alone. No wonder he doesn't know how to talk to girls." She shrugged, bending over to lift her bedsheet. "By the way, you DO know that Kohaku is totally in love with Rin? Miroku says that he blushes every time he sees her." The rustle of the nearby leaves was the only other sound as they worked. My words made him angry again. He may have apologized to Mayu but he's still seething at Sesshomaru.

"Inuyasha…" She watched him take the last cloth to the line. She stood, watching his shoulders jerk furiously. "Inuyasha, stop. Just…stop. What is going on with you? Why are you suddenly so angry? You didn't hate him this much when he was trying to kill you."

"It's just—just leave it alone." Inuyasha's frustration got the best of him. His claws slipped and sliced through their wool blanket. "Shit. Shit!"

"It's just a blanket. Inuyasha—"

"It is from your era. It's important to you!" Inuyasha cursed freely as he inspected the damage. "Fuck, I'm sorry Kagome. I can't replace this."

"Relax, I can mend it. It will be as good as new." She approached slowly, her voice gentle. "Look at me. Please?" He glanced at her. Her hands slipped into his gently. "Why did seeing him with Misaki make you so angry?"

"Because he's a bastard." He blinked and shuffled. "I do not trust him."

"Do you really think that he would hurt a baby?" She squeezed his hands. "He's a father now. He knows what it means to love a child. I don't think any of the village children need fear him."

"Bullshit." Inuyasha snorted.

"He would never hurt a child. I know that." Sesshomaru might be ruthless but he loves children. "He loves Rin. He loves Yuki and Airi and even little Shippo! You've seen it." Her husband avoided her eyes. Her heart nearly broke at the angry pain in his face. Oh, kamis. That's it. I don't know much about Inuyasha's history with Sesshomaru before we met but I know that he grew up alone. It must hurt him to see Sesshomaru with his family. Sesshomaru loves Yuki, Airi, Shippo, Rin, Kohaku…maybe even Misaki. Maybe even Mayu! He will even ask ME for advice and I annoy him. He is the only one that Sesshomaru cannot love.

"I don't want him near Misaki." Inuyasha's voice was strong. "You might think Sesshomaru is all warm and fuzzy but he isn't. He's a cold-blooded murderer. I've seen him cut down armies just because they annoyed him. He is selfish and when he doesn't need you anymore he will throw you aside like garbage."

Oh Inuyasha.

"Shit, don't cry!" His voice pitched. She reached up to wipe away her silent tears. "Why are you crying? You know the way he is. He tried to kill YOU because I loved you!"

"Because it's sad." She could not stop her own tears. He loves his brother. I know he does! He was so worried when Tukiyo imprisoned Sesshomaru. He felt compassion for his brother's suffering.

"Fuck, Kagome. This is why I didn't want to talk about this!" Inuyasha's voice was low for the baby's sake. "I knew it would just make you sad. Why do you have to cry? It kills me, Kagome. Please don't cry."

"He's not that guy anymore. He's getting better. You tried to kill me when we met too. You changed."

"I never—Kagome! I was just trying to scare you so you'd give me the Jewel." The warmth of his hands helped. "You know me. I don't kill humans."

"Sesshomaru hasn't killed except to protect us for a long time."

"He is willing to kill anybody that gets in his way. He killed his own mother. He's completely ruthless."

"So was she! Tukiyo was never going to stop until she killed the babies. She would have killed everyone in this village to punish us. Her death was the only way to guarantee our safety. She would never have given up."

"He protects his kids. It doesn't mean he gives a damn about us." Inuyasha snorted.

"Inuyasha, Mikazuki told me…" She sighed as he turned away from her. He lifted Misaki into his arms; she smacked her lips in her sleep. She thinks that the reason Sesshomaru kidnapped me was YOU—because you chose me. He would not take his son to his mother because he would be mistreated and you have always taken care of us. She thinks Sesshomaru chose me to watch his son because YOU trusted me. Somewhere in that big, stupid, stubborn taiyoukai is a heart that trusts and loves you…even if he is too proud to admit it.

"It's going to take a while for this stuff to dry. Let's eat." Inuyasha stretched lazily. "When does Kaede need you?"

"We have time for lunch." She tucked her basket against her waist and linked her free arm through his. She leaned against him as they walked. "Hey Inuyasha? Do you think we should get a cow?"

"What? Why?"

"So that Misaki can have milk when she gets older. My mother always made sure I had a glass of milk or cereal before I went to school. It's good for little kids. The calcium will keep her bones strong."

"Do you even know how to take care of a cow?"

"Well…no. But I am sure that someone could teach us. The village is full of farmers." She squeezed his arm. "What do you think? We could share with Sango and Miroku and the twins. Cows make a lot of milk."

"Maybe. We'll think about it." Inuyasha grumbled. "It would mean building a fence."

"Miroku could help you before he goes on the road again. Has he talked to you?" She prodded. "He is leaving in a few days—Sango is pregnant again."

"Yeah, I know." His ears twitched at her expression. "She's moody and she doesn't want him to go. She asked me to go with him. Kohaku is going instead. He's grounded for a while anyway now that Kilala has those kittens."

"We can keep her company so that she won't be lonely. Sango has been enjoying having Kohaku stay here. He still avoids her sometimes." She allowed Inuyasha to help her over the large ditch. "Rin will be sad. Did Miroku say how long he will be gone?"

"He'll be back for your festival." Inuyasha rolled his eyes. She smiled. He really does know how I think. "He needs money to repair his roof. I told him we could do it but the idiot won't listen. He also wants to see Mushin and see if that old drunk is still alive."

"It's been a while since he's visited—he was the one who raised him. He loves Mushin." She smacked Inuyasha's forearm lightly. "He probably wants to tell Mushin about Hitomu…and visit his father's grave."

"Yeah, I know." Inuyasha glanced down at Misaki. He probably wishes that he could visit HIS father's grave again. When my father died, I used to visit his grave to tell him about my life. It comforted me sometimes.

"Are women here expected to have babies every year?" She nudged him. "I…I would like to have some time to be with Misaki before we think about having another baby."

"I feel the same way." Inuyasha's free arm wrapped around her shoulders. She smiled and leaned into his warm side. "Between the cow and the baby corral you want me to build, I'm busy."

"Inuyasha!" She giggled as his lips twitched. "It's not a baby corral—it's a crib!"

"You want to put my baby in a jail cell." He shrugged. "Fair enough—she is MY kid. She's bound to cause trouble." The slight upward tilt of his mouth told her he was teasing.

"It's not a—oh, you are so ridiculous!" She pushed his side gently.

"Oi, wench. You're the one who—" Inuyasha's feet suddenly stopped. She hastened to stop. His red arm dropped from around her shoulders. She quickly lifted her arms to accommodate the baby wrapped in red.

"Inuyasha?" She whispered.

"Sesshomaru's at our house." His eyes were serious. "I can smell him. Take the baby just in-case, ok?" She nodded silently. She stayed behind him as they passed through the last stretch of forest to their home. Sesshomaru was sitting on his favorite boulder a short distance from their house. He ignored them as they approached.

"What the hell do you want?" Inuyasha grumbled. Sesshomaru opened his eyes slowly, slanting them towards his younger brother. He remained silent. "Shit—I'm talking to you. What the hell do you want?"

"My son was endangered." Sesshomaru turned his head. "That is unacceptable."

"Your 'young lady' is the one that couldn't keep a hold on him. She let him!" Inuyasha's tone turned vicious. Oh, Inuyasha. That's going to make him really mad.

Sesshomaru stared for several long heartbeats.

"Oh, fuck you!" Inuyasha grumbled. "I don't give a damn about what you think." He turned, gesturing towards her. "Forget him, Kagome. Let's go inside. I'm starving." The strong hands on her waist gave her no choice in the matter. Her feet hastened to catch up as her husband pushed her forward. She cast a look back.

"I meant no harm towards Kagome or your child." The deep voice stopped Inuyasha's feet. Did he just say my name? Or did I imagine that? Her mouth was slightly open as she peered around Inuyasha. "I would not dishonor our father's memory by harming an infant."

She watched Inuyasha swallow hard.

"Yeah, but what about when she gets older? Will you try to kill her?" Inuyasha's tone darkened again. Sesshomaru's eyes slid towards the sleeping infant in her arms. Misaki suckled on her knuckles; her black ears twitched. His expression remained passive but his eyes softened.

"I will not."

"Do you expect me to trust you?" Her husband folded his arms.

"You and I will fight until we die, Inuyasha. That will never change." Sesshomaru stood. His shadow was so long that it nearly reached them. "You understand nothing about my kind."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Inuyasha's hand gripped the Tetsusaiga's tattered handle at his waist. She was able to breathe easier when Sesshomaru did not react.

"Ignorant half-breed fool. As a member of my Pack—ridiculous as your birth was—I shield Kagome and Misaki from all threats. Pathetic as you are, you are bound to the same understanding. Any real youkai would understand."

Inuyasha blinked, frowning.

There were a lot of insults in there, but I think Sesshomaru is trying to make-up with Inuyasha. He's said my name twice now! He wants to work together to protect both of our families. He wants Inuyasha to agree.

"Of course I'd protect Yuki and Airi, bastard. You might be an asshole, but they're good kids." Inuyasha shuffled uncomfortably. His ears flickered uncontrollably. "Are you saying—if I die, you'll watch over my girls?"

"I will kill you when it suits me. That has not changed." Sesshomaru's head tilted slightly. The wind caught his hair. Inuyasha's shoulders stiffened. "Until then, a mutual alliance is in effect. That is the purpose of a Pack, half-demon." The silence was determinedly weird. She held her breath as the two stared at one another. Inuyasha's shoulders were still tense.

"Fine, whatever." Her husband shrugged.

"Hn." Sesshomaru's eyes slanted to meet hers. She blinked. Without another word he turned on his heels. She exhaled audibly as she rested her forehead against her husband's warm shoulder. The relief that they had not started fighting swept through her.

"Kagome?" Inuyasha did not turn round.

"Yeah?"

"Let's get lunch." She straightened as he turned round. He stretched his arms behind his head as he moved inside. She studied his body language. It was SO not an apology but it definitely helped. Sesshomaru threatened to kill Inuyasha…but I think he promised not to kill us? Whatever just happened, Inuyasha does not seem as angry. I wonder if Mayu told him about Inuyasha's apology when she left us.

The sound of her name in Sesshomaru's deep tones continued to play through her brain. The jerk said MY name.

"Oi wench—are we eating or what?" Inuyasha's voice called. She rolled her eyes as she checked on her sleeping babe. He will absolutely refuse to talk about what just happened.

"Maybe by the time you grow up, things will be different." She cuddled Misaki closer. "Mama is trying to fix these idiots. Just be patient, ok?"

"I heard that!" Inuyasha's voice bellowed. She could not contain her giggles as she stepped inside. We will probably be late to see Kaede but it was well worth it. I'm actually sort of proud of the big jerk.
