They go home in silence. It seems to take forever, though it can't have been more than a few minutes, and once they're there, Danny opens the door quickly and they all go through to their living room.
"Go on then," Harry says, folding his arms and facing Giovanna. "What's going on?"
"You know how Matthew Willis escaped? Well, he's active again, after all this time. And it's not good news."
"I thought we didn't know where he was. I thought him and Charlie were just hiding out somewhere doing nothing..." Dougie says, perching on the arm of the sofa Gio sat down on. She sighs and pushes her hands through her hair.
"They were, and Charlie still is, as far as we know, provided he's not dead yet, but not Willis. You know that polar bear that 'went missing'," she makes quotation marks with her fingers around the words, "in Russia? It's not so much of an accident as the authorities have made out. We know it was him. Since then there have been other mysterious accidents. A few terrible deaths that are still unexplained. Bourne wants to find him, and stop him. Willis is doing something, and we need to stop him."
"Whoa, hold on a second," Harry says, holding his hands up. "Why are we still involved in this? We got away; we're free. From what I can see he's stirring up trouble, and going after some random people, but not actually doing anything that requires us getting involved at least..."
Giovanna looked around at their stony faces. Tom could see that she understood that they thought that they had no part in this, whatever their involvement with the institute back in London had been.
"I didn't explain right. Sure, no-one's forcing you to go after him, but if you're decent people you should. He's decided that people with... talents... like yours, like he has, should be kings. That they are better than ordinary people, and so, his plan is to cause enough destruction that people with powers will be needed to save humanity, therefore putting you in power, and then ruling. Like a global dictatorship, with him in charge. Maybe even exterminate anyone without special talents, we don't know exactly."
They sat in stunned silence, watching her.
"So. You're right, Harry. You could stay out here hiding, letting him take over the world. I just don't... I don't think I could live with myself if it was me."
Giovanna finishes speaking, and gets up when none of them respond, still too stunned, frozen by the thought of Willis, somewhere out there in the world, plotting his takeover. Thinking about how of course they have to try to help. Of course. It's just... they have no idea where to start.
Giovanna stalks towards the door, chin held high, and only when he hears the door click open does Tom break out of his daze and run after her.
"Gio! Wait!" he calls, catching her by the wrist, making her turn, face close to hers, breathing heavily. "What do we have to do?"
A smile spreads across her face slowly, looking up into his eyes.
"I have an idea of where to start."
