Ch. 25: Always
"Kris!"
"How far apart are the contractions?"
"How am I supposed to know? You're supposed to keep track!"
"I was...but..."
"God damn it! Kris, I'm going to have these twins and either you get me to the hospital or it will happen in this house!"
"Where are the keys?"
Maura's POV
The sound of a punching bag echoed loudly as I walked into the gym. For the last couple of days, Kris was quiet and it seemed that I was seeing at an old shadow. Jane noticed it also and tried to talk to Kris but she placed her defenses up quickly. She looked at Jane and answered, "Ma, I'm not really up for talking and right now, I'm trying to research on how to handle you when you go into labor."
Many excuses kept coming up and it worried me each time. Usually Kris would come to Jane and me by now but I didn't know what to say to a young woman who just experienced her first heartbreak.
If it was heartbreak.
The loud grunts became louder then I heard someone commented, "Jesus, she's out to kill." I walked fully in and soon I saw what they meant.
There at the punching bag was Kris punching it extremely hard and determined. Sweat covered a bit of her face as I observed her do a combination. I had seen her work out before but this was not working out. No, this was Kris trying to find release.
Kris did another combination before I heard a loud hiss. She pulled back and stopped punching the bag, collapsing back into a chair that was at the side. I entered the gym with the officers who were observing slowly leaving the room. I watched as Kris grunted as she removed her gloves and tossed them aside. She hissed in pain as she flexed both of her hands then looked down at her right hand. She closed her eyes for a moment before I cleared my throat causing her to look quickly up at me. "What's up, Mom," she inquired quietly as she began to remove the tap around her hands.
"Kris, please talk to me," I pleaded gently.
Kris stood up and turned as she inquired, "Talk about what?"
"Don't act that way. You have about the same IQ as me."
"What do you want to talk about then?"
"Kris, what happened? You told it went okay," I informed her as I tried to touch her shoulder. She shrugged her shoulder as she finished removing the tape while I continued on, "I know you're trying to distract yourself with the twins but I can see that you're hurt. Jane and I want to know."
Kris shook her head, "It's nothing."
"Kris-"
"Mom, stop. For once, I don't want to talk. For once, I need to focus on others than myself. Jane comes first especially with the twins." She grabbed the towel and sighed, drying the sweat off her face before she looked at me. "I love you but please drop this, for my sanity," she then leaned in and kissed my cheek. She then passed by me and walked toward the locker room, disappearing behind the door.
R&I
I can't believe I'm doing this.
I stared at the door before knocking on it. The door suddenly opened with Henry Rodriquez giving me a curious and surprise look on his face. "Doctor Isles," he gave a questioning look, "are you looking for Gabriella?"
I shook my head and replied, "I'm actually here to see you."
Henry looked at me with a raised eyebrow before letting me enter. I walked inside the apartment while he gestured for me to sit down. "So what do you wish to speak with me about," he inquired with me as I took my seat.
"I want to talk about our daughters' relationship." He looked down as he took a seat in his chair as I continued, "My daughter is closing herself off. She won't tell me what happened and I would like to know."
"That's your problem, Doctor."
"No, it isn't because I know Gabriella would not let this happen. The only thing that could be stopping this is you."
Henry frowned before he stated, "How dare you accuse me of my own daughter's heartache. Your daughter broke her heart."
I shook my head and retorted, "I know Kris and her heart is fragile, more fragile than my own or my wife's."
"That's fuckin' bullshit."
"No, it isn't. Kris has been nothing but devoted to Gabriella. She's nothing but devoted to others and that's because she's selfless." I could feel my anger boiling inside me as I continued, "She doesn't care if she's in pain and right now, she is. Instead of trying to talk to someone, she's distracting herself by trying to prepare for the birth of her siblings."
"You're her mother. You're bias!"
"You can't just let your daughter be happy."
"I am," he stated as he stood up. He walked around and glared at me, "You don't understand."
"I do," I retorted. I stood up, picked up my purse and walked over toward the door. "My parents were always gone and I can see that you put your business first, it seems. You don't have your daughter's best interests at heart and she's in pain because you can't accept the fact that she found someone." I opened the door, stopped and looked at him as I continued on, "If you love your daughter like I love mine, we must learn to let them go."
"Why are you doing this? Why are you getting involve," Henry suddenly asked when I was about to walk out.
I bit my lower lip before I glanced over my shoulder and answered, "It's what Kris would have done if it was for me. I would do anything for her." I then walked out, closing the door behind me.
I began to walk down the staircase when I suddenly heard my phone ring. I glanced down seeing that it was Kris' caller ID and answered it, "Hello Kris."
"AHHHHHHH…" I quickly jumped.
"Kris, what's wrong?"
"Ma, stop with the screaming!"
"It fuckin' hurts!"
"I know! Start doing your breathing exercises," I heard Kris yell back. She then mumbled under her breath, "Jesus the Christ...Mom?"
"Kris, is everything okay," I worried as I heard Jane release another yell from the background. I quickly approached my car, pulling out my car keys as I asked again, "Krislyn?"
"Everything is peachy, Mom...but..."
"KRIS!"
"WE need you at the hospital now because Jane is going into labor and I'm panicking here. I don't know what to do!"
"I'm on my way, sweetheart."
Jane's POV- Before the call to Maura
Kris came walking through the door and I noticed the tired expression on her face. She closed the door then bent down to pet Jo Friday and Bass who greeted her. She then appeared at the doorway of the living room and asked, "How are you feeling?"
I looked up from the game that was playing and answered, "Tired. How about you? You look like you were in a fight."
"I had a thing with the punching bag. It wasn't pretty," she then lifted her hands to show the small bit of bruising from her hand.
"Kris," I sighed.
"I know, Ma. I know."
I sat up a bit and walked over to Kris who was glancing at her phone. She scrolled through for a quick sec before sitting me down on a chair. As I sat down, I began to stare at her before she said to me, "Please stop staring, Ma."
"I'm not staring."
"Yes, you are." I watched as Kris walked off to the fridge, opening it to find the peanut butter jar, most likely. Kris peered inside while I suddenly felt a wet feeling. I glanced down and my eyes widened fast while Kris spoke, "Did you seriously eat all the peanut butter again, Ma?"
"Kris-"
"I might have strawberries with whip cream maybe?"
"Kris-"
"Or I can always make pie and-"
"KRISLYN," I shouted.
Kris turned around and raised an eyebrow, "What?" I pointed my finger toward the floor and I watched as her eyes followed before she noticed the puddle on the floor. The shock didn't seem to hit her immediately for she glanced down at the puddle then looked back at me with a calm expression. "Your water broke," she stated.
I nodded vigorously, "No duh, Sherlock. Kris, we need to get me to the hospital before the contractions start...oh boy too late!"
I cringed in pain as I took in a deep breath and squeezed the counter. Kris' eyes quickly widened and immediately she closed the fridge. "Where's your emergency bag," Kris shouted as she bolted upstairs.
"Under the fuckin' bed." I heard a loud clatter before Kris suddenly arrived, trying to slip her jacket on while quickly going over the checklist that Maura created for her. Kris was going through the list, pacing back and forth while another contraction came. "Kris, forget about the list," I barked.
"Mom said I-"
"Kris!"
Kris closed her mouth before she asked, "How far apart are the contractions?"
"How am I supposed to know? You're supposed to keep track!"
"I was...but..."
"God damn it," I cussed. I grabbed Kris' collar and said in low voice, "Kris, I'm going to have these twins and either you get me to the hospital or it will happen in this house!"
Kris swallowed visibly before she asked, "Where are the keys?"
All I did was point toward the coffee table, which caused her to run.
R&I
If this was how Maura felt about my driving, I understand now.
Kris drove over the speed limit with the sirens on. It was interesting to see her use the crossroads and streets to reach the hospital but I couldn't complain because I was in PAIN.
P- A- I- N
"Breathe Ma! In then out," Kris stated as she pulled the car into a parking spot. She jumped out of the car and quickly found a wheelchair (I hope that she didn't take that from anyone), sitting me down. She began to wheel me in while I can hear her going through the breathing exercises with me.
As she entered the main lobby, she shouted loudly, "Hey, I got a pregnant lady in labor here!" It was in that moment, nurses quickly came over with Kris frantically calling Maura on the phone. I got a bit grumpy with the nurses, which Kris scolded me about, saying that it was either this way or nothing. I finally relaxed a bit, being wheel into the maternity ward while Kris followed close behind.
When I was finally resting in the bed, Kris entered the room before taking a seat next to me. She patted my hand and sighed, "You okay?"
"These contractions feel like hell," I mumbled before I closed my eyes. Kris glanced at the monitor before she decided to grab my hand. I took in a deep breath while Kris squeezed my hand. The contraction tightened before it finally released a loud sigh of relief while I asked weakly, "Maura's coming?"
Kris nodded with a small smile, "On her way or at least, she should be-"
"Here," we both glanced up to see Maura entering the room. She smiled at me and kissed my lips gently then kissed Kris' cheek as she asked, "How are doing?"
"Contractions are killing her and my hand," Kris informed. I looked down at Kris' hand, seeing that it was turning red in color, which caused me to release it quickly. She hissed in pain before she smiled sheepishly, "I'm going to step out for a bit. However, when it's time for those kids to come, I'm going to be there."
I let out a small chuckle at Kris before I nodded. She gave me a soft smile as she stepped out while I looked up at Maura and whispered softly, "They're coming."
"Yes, they are."
"I'm kind of nervous," I quietly confessed to Maura.
Maura raised an eyebrow and asked softly, "Why?"
"Because," suddenly a contraction came and I hissed in pain with Maura holding my hand. She whispered soft words of encouragement while kissing my cheek softly. As the contraction ended, Maura sat down next to me to massage my hand while I answered, "We raised a teenager not two little babies. What if we-"
"Jane," Maura said softly. She cupped my cheeks and kissed my lips softly as she whispered, "I don't do 'what ifs'. You should know that since we've known with each other for several years now." I rolled my eyes and she gave me a playful stern look while she continued, "I think that these twins won't be exactly be like raising Kris. They are two individuals but we'll have a bit of experience."
I smiled then groaned while I heard a small door knock to see Kris with Doctor Nicholls behind her. "I see you're all situated here, Jane," Doctor Nicholls pointed out. She walked further into the room while Kris leaned against the doorway, twisting her medallion. "Let's see how dilated you are," she insisted as she looked down 'there'. She pulled back with a small smirk, "About six centimeters wide. You're close to seven so I'll get ready for the delivery while I have a nurse bring some to Maura and…Kris?"
I glanced at Kris to see a nervous smile on her face. "I'm not sure about that," Kris said quietly.
"I think you should," I told her.
For a moment, I can see Kris thinking about it then she looked at me with a small smile. "I hope you have blue scrubs, Doc because I can't stand pink," Kris answered.
Doctor Nicholls smiled at us, "I think we can do that."
Gabriella's POV- Meanwhile…
"Gabriella," I heard my father call for me. I sighed as I looked from my laptop to look at him. He was standing by the front door when he told me, "I'm going to head out for a bit."
"That's good to know, Dad," I answered back to him.
He sighed, "Look I know you are upset with me still. I know I can't make it up but there's a voice mail for you that was left a couple of nights ago."
I rolled my eyes, "Thanks Dad, I'll check it out." I heard him leave the apartment shutting the door while I glanced up to look at my answer machine. I closed my laptop, stood up, and walked over before I took in a deep breath then looked down at my hand.
On my right hand was Kris' ring that caused a tear to slide down my cheek. Kris had not called in last couple of days and worried that this was the end of us. It was a horrible thought to think about but it seemed my father was not going to budge anytime soon. It killed me and I even wondered if I should call Kris.
I glanced down at the answer machine and mumbled, "I bet it's nothing."
I pressed the play button and looked away while the recording began to play. "Hey Gabriella, it's…it's me," my head snapped up at the sound of Kris' voice. It was soft and hoarse as I heard her speak more, "I think you already saw the ring I gave you and…god, I meant it. Gabriella, I love you and I know it's cowardly to do this all on the phone but…I'm just a coward."
She loves me.
I let out a small sob mixed with a laugh as Kris continued, "I love you so much. God, I knew I loved you when I first met you. You never questioned the scars and didn't care about my past because you wanted to know me." I could hear Kris' smile as I heard her take in a deep breath and released it, "I've never been in love and even when I was in a relationship for several years, I couldn't even say them." I ran my finger over the ring as I smiled widely as I heard Kris release a small laugh as she continued, "But, you…you somehow got me to say them…I don't care what your dad says either because I love you and I'm yours…"
I'm yours too.
Suddenly the recording got quiet. I thought it was done until I heard Kris whispered softly, "I'm yours as long as you will have me. For once, I'm giving my heart away…it belongs to you, Gabby."
The call then ended while I wiped my tears that were still coming down. She loves me, I thought happily, as I smiled widely. I looked down at my ring wondering what Kris meant when she gave it to me.
But, you never said it back! Your father told you several days later and oh my god, Kris doesn't know. She thinks I don't love her.
I pulled out my cell phone and gazed at the picture of Kris kissing my cheek. I dialed the number and listened to the phone ring before I got her voice mail, "This is Kris, leave a message and I'll call you back as soon as possible and if this is Nonna, I don't know where Jane's at this time. Bye."
I gave a sad smile then took in a deep breath before I heard a small beep. "Kris," I started, "its Gabriella and…and I got your message."
Kris' POV- At the hospital
After making a few calls to Nonna and Korsak, I knew that once Jane gave birth to the twins, there was going to be a big family waiting for us. I finally stepped out with the blue scrubs then I looked over to see Maura dressed in scrubs also. I approached Jane who was groaning as another contraction came. Jane took Maura's and my hand squeezing tightly while Doctor Nicholls stood at the edge of the bed.
"Okay guys, Jane is about ten centimeters wide and I can see one of the twins already crowning," she informed us. I swallowed thickly while Maura peered over a bit and smiled. The smile on her face melted my heart for it was pure joy and love. "On the next contraction, Jane, you are going to push," she told Jane.
"Ok…"
I held Jane's hand before I heard Jane hissed, knowing the contraction was coming. "Push," Doctor Nicholls ordered while Jane pushed, squeezing our hands.
"You are doing well, honey," Maura whispered gently. "You are doing so well."
"Fuck…." Jane yelled loudly.
Jane squeezed my hand tighter as I cringed in pain. I bit my lower lip, thinking and hoping that the first baby would come out now. "You can do this, Ma," I told her.
"I can see the head," Doctor Nicholls announced.
"I…I can't…" I heard Jane cried out.
I shook my head, "When did Jane Rizzoli suddenly say can't."
"Since I'm in pain."
"Jane, you can do this," Maura whispered to her.
I looked over at Doctor Nicholls and the nurses as she took in a deep breath then said, "Okay Jane, on the next contraction, you are going to push the first kid out."
Jane nodded and I took a deep breath as Jane pushed again. I closed my eyes, feeling my hand being squeeze tightly before I heard a loud cry.
My world seemed to have slow down in that moment. I felt my knees buckled and I dropped to the ground, holding Jane's hand still. I glanced at Jane who was breathing heavily while Maura gasped in surprise. I then turned my head to see a baby in Nicholls' hands while I heard Nicholls' announce, "Here's the girl." Maura laughed with tears going down her cheeks while Jane groaned for the next contraction was coming. Doctor Nicholls approached the edge again as she ordered Jane to push.
Jane pushed and another cry came. I looked up seeing that it was the baby boy while I released Jane's hand. As I flexed my hand, I looked around the room seeing the nurses holding the babies.
They're here…they're here…
Suddenly, everything went black.
R&I
"Kris, sweetheart, wake up," I heard Maura call out to me. I opened my eyes groggily to see Maura smiling down at me. I felt a hand on my back as I was sat up.
I rubbed my forehead before I groaned, "What happened?"
"You passed out," Maura said gently. I then noticed that it was not Maura's hands that were supporting me but a nurse who gave me a small smile before walking out of the room. I raised an eyebrow while I looked over at Maura to see that in her arms was a small bundle in her arms.
A small blue bundle.
My eyes widened as I slowly stood up and looked at Jane to see the pink bundle in her arms. She looked exhausted but she held a weary smile as she looked up at me. "Kris," Maura whispered, "would you like to meet your baby brother and sister?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat as I nodded weakly. I moved closer and took a seat on the bed with my eyes glancing from one baby to the other. I felt Jane touched my forearm causing me to look at her. She smiled as she handed the baby girl slowly to me, "This is Alessa Emily."
Emily...
I could tell she held a bit of Rizzoli features. She quickly grabbed my finger and squeezed it tightly while I felt my throat constrict. I leaned back in the bed with Jane who scooted over for me while I held her close to me. Maura then stood up and handed the baby boy, placing him in my other arm as she introduced us, "This is William Matthew."
Matthew...
I could see the Isles gene in him for some reason. Something told me that he would be like Maura in some shape or form but I felt tears slowly coming down my cheeks. It was a warm feeing in my chest while Jane said, "We decided that they needed a Marx influence."
"It felt right that if anything, we should honor two people who loved you," Maura added as she whipped a tear on my cheek.
I chuckled gently, "I love it and I love you." I looked back at Jane, "I love both of you with all my heart but," I looked down at both babies and smiled at them. I kissed their foreheads gently and whispered, "I will always be there for you. I will protect and love you, my little Alessa and William."
Always.
He made several calls until he found out that Doctor Isles had gone down to the hospital because Detective Rizzoli was in labor. He figured that besides those two, Kris Marx would be down there too. He found out that it was not even too far, but that she was Boston General.
He walked into the hospital and asked to what floor was the maternity ward. When he finally reached the floor, he stepped off and the first person he saw when he was stepping off was Kris Marx, examining the window.
He took in a deep breath and sighed, "Here goes nothing."
