A/N: So, I first want to apologize for taking so long to update. I have been super busy and still pissed off over Shay's death in the show. Like why, writers. WHY?!
CHAPTER 25
"LESLIE."
The voice Shay heard was familiar but distorted.
"Leslie!"
Shay opened her eyes to see Rafferty's panicked face. She noticed Rafferty was zip-tied to a chair, and when she looked down, she noticed that she was too.
"What happened?" Shay finally managed to get out. Her head was throbbing – a side effect from whatever drug she was given to knock her out. Chloroform, was it?
"We were kidnapped," Rafferty responded. "From the call."
The urgency in Rafferty's voice did not go unnoticed by Shay. As her memory slowly came back, she realized the severity of the situation they were both in.
"How long do you think we were out?" Shay asked.
Rafferty couldn't be sure. There were no windows in the room where they were being held, and the only light came from an industrial portable floodlight that was sitting in one corner of the fairly big room. What she could make out was that there were two doors on opposite ends of the room. The walls and floors were concrete, and it was chilly. If she had to guess, she figured they were probably being held in one of Chicago's many abandoned warehouses.
"I don't know, Leslie," Rafferty finally said. "I don't even know why anyone would want to kidnap paramedics."
Shay could think of s few reasons as to why someone would kidnap paramedics. Ambulances were stocked with drugs. It wouldn't take much for a drug-runner to place in a false call and then rip them off. The look on Rafferty's face showed Shay that she had also come to the same conclusion. If Rafferty caught a glimpse of their kidnapper's face, it could be the reason why they were taken.
'But the Ambulance has cameras and GPS tracking.' Shay thought. Stealing drugs is one offence…murder is another—killing two paramedics would be risky, even for Drug lords.
Shay and Rafferty's attention suddenly turned toward the door, and they both stiffened as they heard the knob turn. Whoever took them; they were about to find out.
BODEN walked into the Apparatus Bay where members of 51 had congregated to watch Dawson run drills. He was impressed by how far she had come, and he was glad she was able to work at 51. Even after the confrontation with Austin, she was still so determined.
He made a mental note to talk to Dawson privately in his office. Right now he had more important things to deal with.
"Can I have everyone's attention," Boden's voice boomed across the bay, causing everyone to stop what they were doing. "Has anyone heard from Shay or Rafferty?"
Everyone exchanged glances at each other. It was only now had they all realized that the two paramedics had been gone for some time.
"No," Severide said. "But they could be driving around the city."
Boden had obviously thought that was a possibility. It was common for members to take the trucks out on drives.
"Have you called dispatch? They should be able to tell you where they are," Herrmann said.
"Or the very least have them check in," Otis added.
Boden swallowed hard. That was why he had begun to worry. "I did speak to dispatch…"
"And what did they tell you when you called them?" Dawson asked as she took off her helmet and tucked it under her arm.
"I didn't call them," Boden began to say. "They called me."
Severide and Dawson looked at each other.
Boden took in a breath. "61 had spoke to dispatch over two hours ago, informing them that there were no signs of anybody when they responded. They were told to come back."
"Did dispatch try contacting them?" Mouch asked.
"They did," Boden responded. "No answer."
"That's unlike them," Casey said.
Boden sighed. "I know. And the last GPS tracking movement shows the Ambulance heading out of their designated district."
"Are you saying what I think you are saying?" Cruz asked.
"Dispatch and I have reason to believe that Ambulance 61 is missing," Boden answered.
The room went silent as Severide pulled out his phone and tried to call Shay. It went straight to voice mail.
SHAY'S eyes were locked onto Rafferty's as the door slowly opened. Her heart was beating fast and she was scared for herself and Rafferty.
"Good. You two are finally awake."
Shay's posture stiffened even more. She recognized the voice of their kidnapper.
"Allister," Shay whispered, which caused Rafferty to quickly look between the man who was now standing between them, and Shay. She remembered Dawson mentioning some prick named Allister who had gone out of his way to mess with Shay. She had thought the police had dealt with him.
"You remember me," Allister said as he gently cupped Shay's face in his hand.
Rafferty struggled with her zip ties, but they were tied too tightly.
"Get your hands off of her!" Rafferty exclaimed. The more she struggled, the more they cut into her skin.
"Well aren't you a caring friend," Allister said as he took his hand off of Shay and turned his attention toward the feisty brunette. "Allison Rafferty, is it?"
"What the hell do you want, Allister?" Shay asked.
"What I want is you. But you are making it very difficult."
"You're not her type," Rafferty stated.
"I am everyone's type," Allister commented. "And I always get what I want."
Rafferty shook her head. "So you kidnap us? Is that how you show someone you care?"
Allister laughed. "I tried to show Leslie I cared before. I was willing to spend the money to wine and dine her—be romantic if she just gave me the chance. But she made it difficult. And what did it cost? I lost my job. The police have launched an investigation against me—all because she said no."
"And you think kidnapping is the solution? Allister, they will be looking for us," Rafferty stated matter-of-factly.
"I have made sure to cover my bases. I destroyed the GPS and Camera."
Rafferty swallowed hard. She had no doubt that he was thorough. "Even the hidden cameras and trackers?"
"There are no hidden cameras or trackers," Allister stated.
"There are," Shay said going on Rafferty's bluff. "Only paramedics know about them. They've been installed secretly to prevent drug theft."
Rafferty half laughed. "They'll be able to find the Ambulance and triangulate where it has been. They'll know it is you."
Allister clenched his fist, slowly becoming enraged. How could he not know about this?
"Shut your lying whore mouth!" Allister screamed as he pulled out a gun from his waistband and pointed it directly at Rafferty.
Shay's eyes widened in horror, and she had screamed 'NO!' very loudly.
"Allister, please. No! I'll do whatever you want—just don't hurt her. Please."
Allister looked at Shay and then back at Rafferty who looked terrified. There was something in Shay's voice that told him Rafferty was more important to Shay than just a friend.
"Are you two sleeping together?" He asked.
Shay didn't have to verbally say yes or no for Allister to know the answer.
And that is when he lost it.
DAWSON stared at the empty spot where Ambulance 61 should have been. The shift was over now, and they had not yet returned. Her brother, Antonio and Detective Erin Lindsay had stopped by to talk to the Chief. They had gotten word on the missing Ambulance and this case had become a priority for them. Everyone in the Police Department was going to keep an eye out for the missing Ambulance, but for safe measure, Platt had assigned Burgess and Atwater specifically to keep a look out for the Ambulance. Even Newhouse was going to reach out to his Private Investigator contacts to see if they could help locating the two missing women of Firehouse 51.
She was grateful that her brother was taking on another case for Shay. She wanted nothing more than for both of them to be found alive and unharmed.
Severide came up beside Dawson. He had taken the truck out to look for the Ambulance when they first heard it was missing, to no avail.
"If anything happens to Shay, I don't know what I'll do," He said, and Dawson just looked at him. This house had buried enough people already.
"I feel the exact same way," Dawson said.
