I awoke in a meadow; white feathers fell like snow all around me. I rose to my feet and looked around, spotting Ciel and two others a short distance away, a man and a woman.
No.
I thought in shock, the realization sinking in and I let out a breath.
He really does look just like his father.
"It hurt to lose you." I heard Ciel saying sounding as if he was near tears as he took uneasy steps towards his parents. He believed it, to him, this was truth. I stepped forward, coming up beside his parents.
"Ciel." I said firmly. He looked over at me, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Ciel this isn't real, you know it's not. This never happened...and these are not your parents." he shook his head frantically, tears appearing in the corner of his eyes, reminding me that he was still just a child.
"W-what?"
"Ciel...please...remember." I coaxed my voice soft as I held out a hand to him. "Come back with me. Please."
"No, no you're wrong!" he cried out stepping away from me, growing closer to his parents.
"Your parents are dead." I stated coldly, and I could see my harsh words hit him like a slap to the face. "You know that they are, you are no fool Ciel." tears streamed down Ciel's face, yet he did not move.
"You don't know what its like." he grumbled. "To have life ripped away from you, torn before you can mend it, shattered and never to return to normal." he cried, showing a side I knew the conscious Ciel would never show me.
"I do know." I told him, taking a half a step towards him. "My parents are dead. one day you have them, taking care of everything for you, feeding you, paying you, and then the next...you feel alone, but trust me...you don't have to be."
"Don't listen to her!" his mother called out. "I'm your mother! Don't you love me?" she asked, holding out her arms to her son, yet I could hear the taint of Angela's voice within her's. Ciel seemed to ignore her.
"Son." her father said, causing Ciel to stop only a few feet from me. "This temptress will only lead you into lies."
Who are you calling a temptress? I thought, glaring daggers at the imaginary man.
"Ciel." I said firmly, drawing his attention back to me.
"It hurts Evelyn." he said, seeming to remember my name...it was a start at least. He took a few unsteady steps towards me.
"I know." I said, reaching out my arms and embracing him, this younger, childish Ciel crying on my shoulder. I was never going to be able to look at him the same. I realized, as the record began to reverse, the meadow beginning to fade.
"NO!" the father yelled out, reaching out to hit me but fading away before he could. The two of us were quickly surrounded by fire in a place I soon recognized as Phantomhive manor. I followed Ciel's gaze to see Angela standing behind his parents, their faces sewn together the same as the other couples. My eyes went wide and I pulled my gaze away from the gruesome scene. How could she?
I awoke on the floor again. Angela let out a scream of frustration when I heard Ciel groan and wake on the couch beside her. Sebastian threw a knife at her but she flung herself into the air, hovering with her wings extended.
"I was wrong to ever pity you!" she screamed at Ciel. "I should have just rid the world of your impurity!" she looked more like a fury than an angel at the moment, the sight was almost scary to watch what was supposed to be a peaceful creature turn to hatred. "And you." she said, her gaze landing on me, making my skin crawl as I edged away. "I was wrong, you are not pure, you are impure! Unclean! Unnecessary! Unwanted!" I clenched my teeth but could not find any words to speak.
"Enough chatter." Sebastian said as he and Sophie tensed swords and knives at the ready.
"Oh!" Grell cried out. "Let us fight together, side by side my Bassy!" he cheered. Snipping his demoted death scythes around excitedly. Angela took the opportunity to open another white portal.
"Angela!" Sophie cried out, snapping Sebastian's attention back to the angel just in time to send a silver dinner knife flying towards the floating portal above the balcony. The portal was gone before they could stop her or even jump through. I growled, clenching my hands into fists at my sides. Grell tugged at the doors but they refused to open.
"Oh Dear," the new reaper said. "It appears we've been locked in." I glanced at Ciel, the two of us frustrated but the second his eyes met mine he looked away, shame glistening in his irises.
"We have to get out of here!" I demanded. Glancing back over my shoulder at where Angela had vanished. Who knows what she could be doing now?
"Hehehe." An ominous cackle from the bookshelves and Ciel and I turned to find Undertaker shifting through the books.
"What is he doing here?!" I called out at once in shock.
"He came when you two were in the memories." explained Sophie, everyone's gaze shifting to the strange man.
"It still doesn't explain what he's doing here." Grell said with a lazy wave of his hands. "It's not his place to- ow!" he cut off, rubbing his head as a red bump appeared from a whack of the other reaper's scythe.
"Show some respect he is practically a legend." she scalded the naive red head. "That is THE Grim Reaper."
"What?! There is no way!" Grell exclaimed, running up to Undertaker and poking him. "This ugly old man doesn't look anything like the bloke in the portraits." he began, reaching for the white bangs.
"No don't lift the ha- well..." Sophie trailed off, watching Grell practically swoon when looking into the Undertaker's eyes.
"Take me with you." Grell pleaded as the undertaker threw back his head in maniacal laughter. My curiosity nudged and I had a sudden longing to glance at Undertaker's eyes but Sophie interrupted me.
"We need to focus Grell." she demanded, snapping the reaper from his daze. I nodded at Sophie glancing up wearily at the strict reaper, curiosity shining in my eyes. He glanced down at me through his glasses, a look of disapproving disgust and I shrunk away.
"I am William T. Spears." he stated firmly, watching as I extended my hand with a forced smile.
"Nice to meet you." I said, attempting to be polite but he blew me off, glaring at my hand for a moment as if wishing it away before turning towards Sebastian.
He's such a lovely gentlemen isn't he? I thought sarcastically.
"So we're trapped." Ciel sighed in frustration.
"Not quite." the Undertaker said, appearing between me and the other human, a creepy grin spreading ear to ear. "We have one tool that can help us...and it's pink!" I watched him pick up a pink and black bookmark excitedly.
You've got to be kidding me. I thought exasperated; we're never getting out of there.
"A bookmark...and how is this going to help us?" Ciel asked skeptically, causing the grey haired man to laugh.
"You see when I place this marker in this book, which happens to be the record of a Lilliana Crawford, a woman who happens to be sitting in the abbey, we can pause her life." he read placed the bookmark and read the latest sentence of the frozen words. "However I just wrote that Sebastian Michaelis appears suddenly at her side." Sebastian's face lit with shock as he vanished, Sophie immediately spinning to the undertaker, who wrote her and Grell in next, the two of them vanishing into thin air. He sent Ciel and myself last.
(Sophie's view)
"That girl!" Angela called out. "She reeks like a demon."
"Yes." Sebastian said, glancing at the girl from earlier with a sly smile. "I already marked her." I resisted the urge to face palm, glancing at the now blushing nun.
"Angela." Sophie demanded her attention, stepping forward, my Katana swords clutched tightly at my sides, ready for use. "This is too far." I called out, the pain filled cries of the people piercing me like knives. Angela smirked as she dove forward, wings outstretched and her teeth bared like fangs as she approached us but I merely lunged myself into the air, colliding with her, I pushed her back against the wall, struggling to restrain her as she fought my hold. My katana had sliced a slim cut in her cheek that now trickled blood.
I could kill her. I realized. I should kill her, and finish this job. Yet while I looked down at Angela I couldn't help but be reminded of what used to be fear and respect for the higher angel, mercy welling inside me. "Release them and no harm will come to you." a smirk flashed across Sebastian's lips.
"I can make no such promise!" he called out, throwing a knife that Angela avoided very narrowly. Her eyes widening with shock as a repeat hedge clipper shot out at her, pinning her to the wall by her neck. I glanced back at Will who held the angel steady. The people quieted down, watching in amazement as the Angel bled. Grell who was beside Will, snipped his little scissors twice, a look of utter disappointment on his face until William tossed him a second hedge clipper which Grell caught with joy.
"Now this is more like it!" he called out in excitement. Launching the blade unnecessarily through the angel's outstretched hand and wing, piercing through the tender muscles and primary feathers. I grit my teeth; I could only imagine the pain and Angela cried out, gritting her teeth as gentle whines escaped her.
"I expect it washed and returned on my desk tomorrow morning." William added, disappointing Grell. I let go of Angela, spreading my wings as I fell backwards almost like parachuting to the ground next to the others. A smile pierced Sebastian's thin lips as he stared up at the pinned angel.
"I suggest we play a game of darts." he said, his voice eerily quiet as he tossed two silver knives at Angela, one sinking painfully into her arm and the other into her side, staining her white dress with blood. Sebastian glanced at me as I cringed, an arrogant smile piercing his lips as he watched me squirm. "Oh dear...I missed. Now whatever do you think I should aim for next?" Grell waved his hand frantically, excited that his Bassy seemed to be in a good mood...for a demon at least.
"Pick me! I want to play!" I gave him a silencing stare that made him pout. "What? did I do something wrong?" he asked as if oblivious to how wrong this really was, torturing an angel, even one as twisted as Angela.
"A demon alright." William said, sharing my disgust as Sebastian lifted his remaining two knives.
"That's enough." I scalded Sebastian, receiving another smirk.
"Is this unsettling to you?" Sebastian said smugly, receiving a dirty look from me. "She is a fallen angel isn't she? A threat that you have been sent to destroy."
"Don't push it demon." I hissed, straightening up to my full height, as we stepped closer, getting in each other's faces even though neither of us would attack. Sebastian noticed my obvious unsettlement, and he gave me a mock bow, making sure his hand was touched the red and white specked flower tenderly.
"My lady." he said sarcastically, watching my face grow red with anger. Gosh was he annoying! It took all of my willpower to swallow my pride and reply appropriately.
"My lord." I said with a slight curtsy, my hand touching the white and red speckled rose in my hair gently. One day I was going to get him for all the trouble he caused me. Suddenly the entire abbey began to shake, and Angela's eyes turned white, she screamed and writhed as if she were possessed though I could sense no demonic power overcoming her...she merely wanted to take the abbey down...and us with it.
"She intends to bury us with the church." William said casually, not even fazed. Sebastian turned to the congregation of people, lifting his arms.
"I suggest you all go now." he said people yelled as they ran from the building in chaos. Our group was the last to leave, and later as we stared out over the rumble, Ciel turned to Sebastian.
"It's over." he stated as if in disbelief, having not expecting it to be so easy. "A promise is a promise." my eyes went wide, I couldn't help it, I couldn't stand aside.
"No." I mumbled, taking a step towards them, pulling my katana from my dress. Even if I had to kill Sebastian I couldn't let him take his soul. Sebastian didn't even glance at me; his eyes remained glued to Ciel.
"Stand back Sophie." Ciel warned me. "A promise is a promise." he said, closing his eyes, but despite his brave front I knew he must have been afraid, a mere child surrendering his life. I growled I dashed forward but Grell got in the way, he grabbed me and attempted to push me back.
"NO!" he called out. "I can't let you hurt my Bassy!" he cried out and just when I thought I was about to break free he surprised me, swinging past me like an expert and holding my hands firmly behind my back. "I learned that at the reaper academy." he said proudly as if he didn't understand the seriousness of the situation. "I was at the top of my class!"
"Grell let go of me!" I yelled, struggling against the red head, tugging at my hands violently but unable to break free.
"He made a promise Sophie." Grell said, seriously, as if trying to explain something to me. "Oh, how would you angels put it...This is a choice of his own free will." I froze, my katana dropping from my retrained hands, my legs giving out beneath me and I slowly fell to my knees defeated. I couldn't go against that.
Sebastian still didn't look at me, I thought he would have jumped at the opportunity to win over me but instead he reached out and straightened Ciel's bow tie, the Boy's eyes widened in shock.
"Don't tell me." he muttered, reaching out, grabbing Sebastian angrily. "Why haven't you taken my soul? Don't tell me we're not done! She has to be dead...right?" I looked up at them in shock, watching Sebastian kneel to the boy.
"I am afraid I will be serving you a little while longer my lord."
