Friday came and they slowly decreased the medicine keeping Derek in the coma. Pen and Fran were the only ones in the room, everyone else was in the waiting room. They were all on pins and needles, hoping he would wake up. Nothing happened but the doctor expected that. He assured them that he would wake up when he was ready. Fran watched as Penelope talked to Derek, letting him know everything that was going on. She quietly left and went to the waiting room where she told everyone that there hadn't been any change. The team called JJ to see how things were going. They ask JJ to call them with updates. Before JJ hung up Hotch had told her that Tamara was still in Virginia and they were keeping tabs on her.
JJ went to check on Pen and found her asleep in her chair that was pushed up against Derek's bed. She was holding his hand. She took seat on the opposite side of Pen and watched Derek. He was like a brother to her and she willed him to wake up soon. Pen needed him and she didn't know if she would be able to handle it if he didn't wake up. She had already looked pale, her face withdrawn, and circles around her eyes. She had lost weight and it made her bump more noticeable. Derek had been lying in that hospital bed for two weeks and they had taken their toll on Pen, Fran, and everyone else. JJ knew when Derek woke up he was going to be mad when he saw how Pen looked and she wouldn't blame him. If there was one thing that she knew about Derek, he would be blaming himself for the way Pen looked.
Her thoughts traveled to Fran. She was amazed at how strong the woman was. Her son was lying in a bed, almost died, but she hadn't shed a single tear since that first day she arrived. She knew she couldn't break down if front of Pen because she knew that Pen was barely holding it together. Sarah was another story. She cried whenever Pen and Fran weren't around. Des on the other hand was a mystery. She couldn't figure out why she hated Pen so much and why she was teaming up with Tamara. Tension seemed to fade away when Pen refused to let her see her brother. She knew Fran also had words with her and since that day, there had been no sign of Des. Which had been a relief for Pen. JJ wondered what would happen when Derek woke up and found out what Des had done.
Derek's friend Bubba was Pen's shadow. He went everywhere she went and brought her meals and snacks. He made sure she rested and drank plenty of fluids. He would tell her stories about Derek when they were growing up. You could also see the concern on his face when he looked at Pen. He was the only one that managed to get her out of the hospital. They went down to the area that had benches to sit on. They talked or he just sat with her while tears ran down her face. By the end of the day, she was exhausted and he would pick her up from the chair and lay her on her bed that they had for her in the room. He had mentioned once that Derek wasn't available to take care of his woman so it was up to him to make sure she was taken care of.
Every member of the team called every day at various times of the day to talk to Pen. Hotch talked her to the longest and called the most. He told her he was coming at the weekend to stay with her while JJ went home to her family. He asked if there was anything that she needed besides the obvious. He told her he had to talk to her about something and he couldn't do it over the phone.
Pen stirred and JJ looked at her. Pen looked at Derek and then at her. "What time is it?"
"It's a little after 7. It's dinner time. Are you hungry?"
"Not much but if I don't eat Bubba will get mad."
"Let's go then. I'm sure they have food waiting down the hall."
Pen kissed Derek and left with JJ. They entered the room that families met in to talk about their loved ones and saw the spread laid out before her. Bubba stood up as soon as he saw Pen.
"I was just about to go get you. It's all hot and waiting to be eaten."
"I'm here."
"Well sit and tell me what you want."
Pen asked for a little of everything and ate most of it while she listened to the conversation. The doctor chose that moment to come in and Pen sat her fork down. He looked at all of them.
"I just came back from checking on Derek and everything looks good. All his vitals are strong, he's breathing fine."
"Why hasn't he woke up yet?" Pen asked.
"Derek's body went through a lot of trauma and even though we were keeping him in a medically induce coma, his body still needs to heal. He has a little bit of color back and his incision is healing up nicely. If he doesn't wake by Monday we'll run some tests to make sure that all is well. I know it's hard but be patient. Derek will wake up when he's ready."
He stood to leave and Fran asked him if he would like anything to eat. He declined st Pen looked at Fran.
"He might never wake up. Is that what you're keeping from me Fran?"
She looked at Pen and sighed. "It's a possibility. He should have waken by now but these things take time."
"This will be the beginning of the third week. I don't know how much more I can take." Pen whispered as she stood and left the room. They watched her go and then Sarah spoke up.
"You shouldn't have told her anything mom."
"I know but I couldn't lie to her anymore. She needs to prepare herself if he doesn't wake up soon. It could be days, weeks, or even months before he wakes up. The doctors don't understand why he hasn't. The longer he is asleep he could have brain damage."
"Brain damage. What is Pen going to do if Derek doesn't wake up?" Sarah asked. "What are we going to do?
"The only thing we can do, be there for her and those babies." Fran whispered. "She's going to need all of us."
The weekend brought Hotch as JJ left. He sat with Derek for hours talking to him and just sitting there next to him. Even though they had their disagreements, Derek was like a brother to him and it pained him to see Derek like that. He took one look at Penelope and knew what he was going to suggest would benefit everyone. He walked to the door and turned to take one last look at Derek. He sought Penelope and found her in the waiting room staring at the floor. He walked into the room and called her. She looked up and he held out his hand. She stood and walked to him and linked her arm through his. They walked to the elevator and headed to the cafeteria. He got her something to drink and sat across from her.
"How are you really Penelope?"
She looked at her hands. "I feel like a part of me is missing and I might not get it back. I wish I was lying in the bed next to him. Why won't he wake up?"
"I don't know Penelope. I wish there was something I could do. But there is something I want to talk to you about." She looked at him. "I took the privileged of talking to Derek's doctor and asked if it is possible to fly him home to Virginia Medical Center. I think you need to be in familiar surroundings and at least that way you will both be home and we can take of the both you properly. I know you have Derek's family but we can help. One of us will stay behind when we go out on a case."
"You're already down two members."
"I talked to the Director and he agrees with everything. We have a technical analyst on borrow from another department and no it's not Kevin. We also will be borrowing an agent from team B."
"Is it safe to move Derek?"
"The doctor says it is and the FBI is flying a nurse and the doctor that will taking over his care. They will fly down Monday to consult with the doctor and get Derek ready. If you agree you could be home by Monday night."
"I would like to ask Fran what she thinks before I make any decision but I think I would prefer to be home. I have a doctor's appointment next week and I was going to cancel. I can't leave him."
"Do you want me to talk to her for you?"
"It would probably be better but I want them all to know what's going on."
They finished their drinks and they went back to the waiting room where they found everyone. They went to the conference room and they all took a seat. Hotch told them exactly what he told Penelope and waited for their reactions.
"The doctor says it safe." Fran asked.
"He said Derek is stable enough to be moved. We'll have a helicopter take him, the doctor, and the nurse to the hospital. The rest of us well take the plane and meet them there. They'll get there before we will and they will have him settle into a private room with a FBI agent stationed at the door."
"I won't be able to fly with him?" Penelope asked.
"No. There won't be any room. They need to take some medical equipment in case they need it."
"All of you can stay at the house. We have more than enough room but I'm sorry Fran, Des won't be staying there. She can fly back with us but that is as far as I'm able to go."
"I understand." She said. "What do you want to do Pen?"
"I want for Derek to wake up and I want to go home. I think Hotch is right. I think we need to go back. I have a doctor's appointment next week and I'm not going to leave Derek. I want to do this but only if it is safe for him."
"I will ask the doctor to talk to you before any decisions are made."
"I have one question?" Bubba asks. "What about this Tamara woman? She'll be closer to Derek and Pen."
"I have taken steps to insure that she doesn't bother anyone. As soon as we're back home Penelope will be filing a restraining order. If she comes anywhere near them, she will be arrested. Fran I need you to make it very clear to your daughter that if she helps Tamara in any way I will have her arrested. The only people that will be allowed into that room will be the ones Penelope approves of."
"I understand completely. Your loyalty lies with Pen and I don't blame you. I will talk to her but I can't guarantee that she will do as I ask. She's furious right now that she can't see her brother."
They talked to the doctor on Sunday and the arrangements were made to move Derek Monday afternoon. The Morgan family and Bubba checked out of the hotel and their bags were taken to the plane. The doctor and nurse arrived and stayed with Derek the entire time they were there. Penelope talked to them and was put at ease as they answered all her questions. She felt nervous and they disconnected Derek's machines and connected him to portable ones. As the time neared to leave, Penelope thanked all the nurses and doctors that tended to Derek while he was there. She hugged her favorite nurse goodbye and then watched as one by one said goodbye to Derek. It was finally her turn and she walked to his bed and kissed on the lips and whispered "You're going home baby. I'll see you there." Hotch came and stood next to her as they watched Derek be wheeled to the elevator that would take them to the roof and the waiting helicopter. Hotch looked at her.
"The rest of the team will be there waiting for him. They won't leave his side until we get there. They are excited to see both of you. Are you ready?"
"I'm ready."
