Edit: Forgot to explain what Cruisers are lol, put that in now :D
Selva stepped off the ship. It had been a long ride, and she'd had a very restful sleep with Jovem curled up beside her on the soft bed. She was in the middle of stretching when she first looked around on the new planet. Her breath caught in her throat. The landscape in front of her was beautiful. Untouched jungle spread as far as the eye could see. Jovem bounded out to explore the immediate area. Kar'ja followed as Selva walked to the edge of the clearing to examine the foreign plants.
'This planet belongs to Elder Par'ko-ti,' Kar'ja explained. 'He comes here for holidays.'
'Really? Cool.' Selva was only half paying attention. She was fascinated by the different plants.
'There is no Hive, and no Oomans, but there are a few dangerous animals. I have stayed here a few times. It is a good place to live.'
Selva turned to grin up at him. 'I love it,' she announced. 'Elder Par'ko-ti is really going to let us live here?'
Kar'ja nodded. 'You and Jovem will be safe from hunters here. We will stay here one night to make sure you are settled. The house is behind our ship. You can stay there or build your own settlement.'
The house was almost as big as the ship. Elder Par'ko-ti gave them a tour, showing them his room, the small trophy room beside the lounge, the few guest rooms, two bathing rooms, large kitchen and his study which doubled as a small armoury. A wild-looking garden behind the house provided fresh fruit and vegetables that Selva didn't recognise, but Kar'ja assured her they were safe for Ooman consumption. A creek ran through the bottom of the garden to end in a small pool not far from the house. Tiny fish flashed in the light of the midday sun as they darted to and fro through the clear water.
In the study, the Elder explained to Selva how to work the computer built into his desk, showing her different files of information including a stockpile of images and descriptions of plants and wildlife on the planet. He showed her which buttons activated a translator, and blueprints of the house which told the reader about the technology built into it and how to control it. Having travelled to Earth a lot, he had learned English and spent a whole month translating everything in his computer's database just for the challenge of it.
An underground garage revealed two small Cruisers, lightweight ships meant solely for cross-planet transport, and a mass of equipment for repairs and maintenance. Elder Par'ko-ti showed Selva how to operate one of the Cruisers and went over the basics for maintenance with her.
That evening, Selva and Elder Par'ko-ti sat at the kitchen table, poring over maps while Jovem and Kar'ja mock-battled each other.
The Elder looked up when they bumped into one of the large lounge chairs. 'Do not break anything!' he ordered. Kar'ja and Jovem both gave him apologetic looks before continuing their fight.
Selva burst into a fit of giggles. When she noticed the Elder looking at her curiously, she tried to control herself. 'They looked like a pair of naughty children,' she explained when she had caught her breath.
The Elder looked thoughtful. 'Despite his age, Kar'ja was always the most...playful of my students. And your brother is quite young.'
'How old is Kar'ja?'
'That is for him to tell you.'
'Oh. How old are you?'
Elder Par'ko-ti gazed at her. 'It is impolite to ask your elders personal questions.'
Selva giggled. 'Alright, fine. What's going to happen to Sal'rk and Mha'ke-tel?'
'They will be put on trial. Most likely they will be stripped of their ranks and exiled.'
'You mean set free? They could do this again?' Selva demanded, fear in her eyes.
'Exile would see them living outside any Yaut'ja territory, with no help from family or former acquaintances. They could be imprisoned, or executed.' Selva shuddered. 'Execution is a rare punishment. Kar'ja and I will speak at their trials. Some of their crimes were against us, therefore we will have a say in their punishment. Is this really what you wish to discuss?'
'No. Show me again that place that would be good for a settlement.'
The farewells were brief the next morning, both the Elder and Kar'ja anxious to get their prisoners somewhere more secure. Selva surprised both of them by wrapping her arms around them.
Even before they were out of the planet's gravitational pull, Selva had the Cruiser out and was flying herself and Jovem to the area she wished to build in. It was a large clearing bordered by thick jungle with a shimmering lake on one side and thick grass everywhere else. With Jovem's help, she marked out where the buildings would go, a small house facing the lake and a large shed behind it, and they began to work on building their new home.
