Chapter 24: Surprises, Part 1

Naomi woke up slowly with a smile on her face, allowing the sunlight to bring her fully awake. She felt energised and refreshed after last night's escapades with Emily. They had all gone out to Cook's club to let loose after a few long days of hard work. And whilst she was sad to see Franky and her uncles leave, with a secret promise to return for the ball they were having for the twins, Naomi was ready for things to go back to normal.

Emily had been getting frustrated with the storyline of the video game, and begged Naomi to allow them to go to the studio to handle it. She had reluctantly given in, because Naomi had found that she didn't have the will to say no to the younger twin. So Cook beefed up their security detail, adding two bodyguards to the rota that followed Emily around like shadows on a sunny day.

And it's not like anyone had seen or heard from Mandy in weeks anyway. Even JJ couldn't find a trace of her in the computer systems, where she had been lurking like a bad smell. It's almost as if she had disappeared completely.

Naomi suddenly scowled at the thought of Mandy, but it was quickly replaced with a smile as she heard Emily murmur next to her, and she found herself grazing her eyes over Emily's features as she slept.

"Has anyone ever told you that it's creepy to watch someone sleep?" Emily's husky voice broke the silence in the room.

Naomi laughed out loud at the words. "Maybe once or twice...," Naomi trailed off, pretending to think, "I actually think you told me that last week." She smirked down at the red head as Emily cracked open one eye to look up at her.

Emily couldn't hold back a snort of laughter once she saw the cheeky smile on Naomi's face. "Whatever." She mumbled as she rolled over onto her back and opened both eyes, yawning. "What are you doing up so early?"

Naomi shrugged. "Wasn't sleepy anymore."

The truth was, Naomi was too excited to sleep. Today was the day that she had planned to give Emily and Katie their present. It was something she had talked with her mum about and tonight, Naomi was going to enjoy the looks on their faces.

"I've gotta go." Naomi said as she quickly got up from the bed and started searching for clothes.

Emily watched in confusion. "Where are you going?"

"I've got an appointment with Mum to go to." Naomi told her as she pulled on a pair of jeans, but then stopped what she was doing to look back at Emily. "I'll be back in a little bit, three hours at the most, yeah?"

Emily could tell that Naomi was holding something back. She knew it by the look in her blue eyes and also by the way the pulses picked up speed throughout her body, but instead of calling her out on it, Emily just smiled. "Okay."

Naomi smiled back, nervous about what she was planning to do today, and finished getting dressed under Emily's gaze.

"Naoms?"

"Yeah?" Naomi stopped pulling her long sleeved t-shirt down midway, giving Emily a nice view of the small strip of skin on show. "Hey! Eyes up here, you perv." Naomi called out to her and Emily blushed. "What'd ya want?"

"I was wondering if you wanted to go out for lunch, a picnic actually, when you get back?"

It was asked so quietly, so shyly, that Naomi almost melted on the spot. It was always a big deal to Naomi when Emily asked her out, because she very rarely did it. But then again, it's not like Naomi gave her very many opportunities to ask either. Naomi was the one asking and planning and arranging, so whenever Emily did ask, it was like a hit of the best drug ever and Naomi would stay high the rest of the day.

"If you want to, that is...," Emily trailed off, mistaking Naomi's silence as a rejection, "but...I understand you're busy and all...never mind, forget I asked."

"What? No!" Naomi quickly finished pulling her shirt down and rushed over to Emily. "No, I won't never mind, okay? I was just thinking how nice it is when you ask me out, that's all." She stopped and took a breath, because she could feel herself blush, felt her heart slow down its beating and looked back at Emily. "I would love to go on a picnic with you, say about two this afternoon?"

Emily jumped out of bed to stand in front of her girlfriend, bringing her arms up to wrap them around Naomi's neck and gently pulled her down to bring their lips together. "That sounds perfect." Emily whispered just before they connected.

As soon as Emily's lips touched Naomi's, the pulses ran throughout their bodies, causing pleasant sensations that Naomi was finding extremely hard to ignore. But Naomi knew that if she wanted to what she planned to do, she had to leave before Emily could convince her to get back into bed, so she reluctantly pulled away.

"Ems, I've gotta go." Naomi stated, slightly out of breath.

Emily stepped away from her with a sigh. "Fine," she smirked, "go and do what you have to do. I'm going to see if Cook will drive me to the studio, so I can work with Virginia on the game."

Naomi stopped rooting around her wardrobe, grabbing a hoodie and looked worriedly at Emily. "Can't that wait? I don't like you going without me." She pouted, causing Emily to laugh.

"Naoms, I'll be with Cook, yeah? I'll be fine." Emily said as she got up and started dressing. "Trust me, babe? I won't go anywhere but there and back, yeah?"

Naomi knew she was being irrational, but she couldn't help the fear that gripped her, as the thought of Emily on her own ran through her mind. And Emily was right, being with Cook was about the safest she could be, especially with the extra security.

"Naomi?" Emily called out to her softly but got no reply, knowing that Naomi was stuck in her head again. "Naoms, babes? Are you there?" Emily asked as she ran a finger along the blonde's jawline.

"Yeah, I'm here." Naomi answered as she felt Emily cup her cheek. "I'm sorry, Ems...I just get scared, that's all. I worry, ya know?"

"I know you do, but seriously? Do you think Cook is going to let me out of his sight?"

"He better not!" Naomi smirked, knowing that she'd give in to the red head. "Not if he wants to keep all his wibbly bits intact!"

"Naomi Campbell! I will not have you threaten Cook like that," Emily stated with a smile, "he's not even here to defend himself. And besides, I'd rather not think of his "wibbly bits", thank you very much!" She used her fingers to make air quotes, making Naomi laugh out loud.

"I sincerely hope you don't," Naomi said as she ducked down to give Emily a kiss, "because that would be awkward."

Emily let out another snort of laughter, smacking Naomi lightly on the arm and pulled away to start getting herself dressed. "Go! The quicker you leave, the sooner you'll be back and we can go out to lunch."

Naomi kept laughing as she made her way to the door. "I'll let Cook know you want to go to the studio and make sure he understands to keep you close." She said over her shoulder and shut the door behind her. She had a great feeling about today and she couldn't wait until dinner tonight, so she could see the look on Katie and Emily's faces.

For the first time since her dad had left, Naomi had a spring in her step and she whistled as she practically skipped down the stairs, in search of Cook and her mum.

Effy felt foolish. Simply and utterly ridiculous.

She couldn't help it, as she stood in front of her mirror, trying to figure out what to wear. 'This has never been an issue before!' She thought to herself, rejecting yet another long shirt and black leggings.

Effy was nervous about going on a date, again, and that scared her.

Shortly after Naomi and Gina left for the city, Emily and Cook took off to head into the studio, leaving Effy and Katie alone at the breakfast table, in a somewhat tense silence, that Effy didn't know how to break.

"Effy?" Katie's voice was small and shy, something you'd never associate with the older twin and it pulled at Effy's heart to hear it.

"Katie?" Effy replied with a smirk.

"Would you like to go out with me this afternoon?"

Well that wiped the smirk off Effy's face real quick, because the couple of dates they had been on after that first one were always initiated by Effy. To say Effy was shocked speechless was an understatement. Although, with the way Katie was starting to blush, Effy knew she had better say something.

"Uh...yes." She replied, almost breathlessly because her heart had started beating like crazy under Katie's gaze. Effy cleared her throat that suddenly felt dry. "Yes, please. I'd really like that. Tonight?"

Katie shook her head and smiled at her. "No, I'm thinking lunch and the park. Its a nice day out, the sun is shining and it's almost my birthday, so...,"

Effy had smiled at the happy sound of Katie's voice and agreed. But now she felt like a twat, because she didn't know what to wear and Naomi wasn't here to help her. She was about to give up when she heard a car pull up in front of the house and went out on the balcony to see Cook and Emily get out of his car.

She could've cried with relief right then, as she yelled down at the younger twin, telling her she had an emergency and needed her. That relief changed to embarrassment fifteen minutes later, when after telling Emily about her date and her dilemma, Effy stood by rolling her eyes as Emily laughed.

"Are you done yet?" Effy asked dryly, as Emily's laughter subsided and she wiped tears from her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Effs...it's just...," Emily chuckled, biting the inside of her cheek to avoid full on laughter, "well...Katie's never actually asked anyone out before and knowing she's done it twice now...and I just...sort of...pictured her face whilst she asked, that's all."

"Emily, please?" Effy asked quietly, so quietly in fact that Emily immediately sobered and honestly looked at her. "It matters, yeah? This is hard for me, because it matters."

Effy looked on the verge of tears and Emily didn't want that to happen, so she stepped over to the brunette and wrapped her arms around the girl, giving her a Fitch hug. "It'll be fine, Effy. I'm sure you could show up in a bin bag and Katie would still think you're the most gorgeous creature to walk the earth."

Effy let out a shaky chuckle, but suddenly felt a bit better. "Thanks, Ems." She said as she pulled away. "I still wanna look great though, so...could you help? Please? It's almost time for us to leave and all I know is heroin chic, apparently."

"Well, that's obviously a direct quote from Katie." Emily deadpanned, and Effy laughed as she nodded. "Alright then! Let's get busy, shall we?"

Emily was able to put together an outfit that didn't scream "I'm a goth!" and once Effy was dressed, Emily did her hair, taming the "fucked all night long" look into a sleek straight hairstyle.

The younger twin was so amazed at the transformation in front her, that she opened her mouth and spoke before her brain could stop her.

"Fuck me, Effs! If I wasn't in love with Naomi, I'd make a play for you myself!" Emily said, but stopped short when she caught Effy's wide-eyed gaze in the mirror as she realised what she had just said out loud and the electrical pulses that had been silent since she and Naomi went their separate ways earlier suddenly flared up and pulsated throughout her body, with an intensity that she had never felt before.

Effy turned quickly and stood, grabbing Emily by the shoulders. "Emily! Did you just say...,"

Emily looked panicked. Totally gobsmacked, in fact, as she stared at Effy in silence.

Effy looked at the red head in concern, as she just sat there. "Emily?" No answer, as Emily continued to stare straight through her. "Ems?" Effy was really starting to worry now, as she watched Emily's emotions flicker through her eyes. She gently shook the younger twin. "Emily, snap out of it!"

Just then, Katie entered the room and saw the look on Emily's face as Effy stood holding onto her. "What the fuck is going on?" She asked, concerned for her sister. When Emily didn't answer, Katie turned to Effy for answers. "Well?"

"I'm not sure, but...," Effy trailed off, because she didn't feel it was her place to say it out loud. "She said something and I think she's scared."

Suddenly, Emily burst into tears and fell into Effy's arms. "I'm in love with Naomi!" She sobbed, feeling every emotion under the sun and then some, but the two that stood out were excited and broken. "What am I gonna do?"

Katie and Effy stayed quiet whilst Emily cried as she realised that Naomi was possibly the love of her life and knowing that she may not be around for much longer.

Naomi was sitting with Gina in the conference room of the Campbell Corps., headquarters in Bristol, when she was hit with the pulses.

"What the fuck!" She cried out as she almost doubled over at the intensity of them, causing Gina to gasp and the board of trustees to watch in alarm.

"Naomi?" Gina came over and grabbed her before she could fall out of her chair. "Are you alright? What's happened?"

Naomi could hear the urgency in Gina's voice, so she shook her head and took a breath, allowing herself to calm down so the pulses didn't hurt. Once she was able to relax herself enough, she noticed the constant thrum throughout her body.

"Naomi, love...," Gina brushed Naomi's hair out of her face gently as she looked into her daughter's eyes, "i-is it...,"

Naomi shook her head again, knowing what her mum was thinking. "It's not the curse." She whispered.

Gina knew that Naomi wouldn't want to talk about this in front of the board, so she turned and sent them all a pleasant smile. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you'll excuse us for about, say, twenty minutes?" She waited patiently whilst everyone gathered their things, standing up and leaving them alone, before turning back to Naomi. "Alright, what is it?"

"The pulses." Naomi said simply as she rubbed at the spot above where her heart was beating.

Realisation hit Gina, as she thought back to a conversation her and Naomi had months ago, and Naomi explained the pulses of electricity to her. "I thought you said that you never felt them if Emily wasn't around?" She asked confused.

"I never have before...," Naomi trailed off, as a bad thought popped into her head, "what if something's happened to her? Mum?"

Gina was on the verge of gathering Naomi up and heading home, when logic prevailed. "Think about it, love." She said as she sat next to Naomi. "If something had happened, Effy or Cook would have called you, yeah?"

"What else could it be?" Naomi asked, as the current of electricity kept a constant rhythm with her heart. The pulses were confusing and frustrating, even if they weren't entirely unpleasant. "We can't be sure, I'm not there!"

"Naomi! Use your head, love." Gina commanded, gently. "Call Cook."

Naomi pulled her mobile out of her pocket and hit Cook's number, as she tried her best to calm down. He picked up on the second ring, surprised to hear Naomi on the other end of the line.

"'Ello, Blondie!" Came his cheerful greeting.

"Cook, where's Emily?" Naomi asked straight away, no pretense or small talk.

He was surprised by the bluntness, but he let it slide and answered the question. "She's probably still up wiv Effs. The poor girl was losing her shit because she couldn't find anything ta wear, apparently. She drug poor Red upstairs straight away. Why? What's up?"

Naomi took a few seconds to get her breathing under control before she answered. "I was just wondering...I-I tried to call her but her mobile went straight to voicemail." Naomi let the small lie slip off her tongue, suddenly wondering why she didn't try calling Emily herself.

"Well, I could run up and get her to call ya...,"

"No, that's alright, I don't wanna bother her if she's busy." Naomi said, a little too quickly, hoping that Cook wouldn't hear the fear in her voice. "We're almost done here, then we've got one more meeting, so we'll be home soon."

"Alright, if you're sure, Blondie." Cook replied. "Listen, I've gotta go. The security crew I hired for the ball are here to go over all the details, yeah? See ya laters!"

Cook had hung up before Naomi could say goodbye, leaving her feeling even more confused, but relieved.

"Alright?" Gina asked, looking at her daughter expectantly, earning a nod. "That's good. Now, how about we finish business so we can get home, yeah?" Naomi agreed and Gina called the board back in, so that Naomi could finalise her plans for Emily and Katie's birthday present

An hour later, Gina and Naomi found themselves sitting in The Bath Priory Hotel with drinks as they awaited the arrival of their last meeting of the day. Naomi didn't know who they were meeting, Gina only telling her that it was a last minute request.

She was about to ask her mum who it was, when a voice carried across the room.

"Gina Campbell, how have you been?"

Naomi's eyes shot up to find an older woman, of about seventy, striding toward them followed by a familiar looking younger woman, roughly around her mum's age.

"Millie!" Gina stood up and wrapped her arms around the woman in a hug, before turning to the younger one with a smile. "Alicia. It's so lovely to see you again, dear."

Naomi stayed silent during the greetings, but noticed the glances she received from both of the women.

"Naomi," Gina looked over to her daughter and smiled, "you remember Alicia, don't you?"

She looked confused at her mum's question, thinking as hard as she could, but with thoughts of Emily running through her mind on top of the still ever changing rhythm of the pulses, Naomi just couldn't remember meeting the woman.

Alicia smiled at her warmly, as she extended her hand for Naomi to shake. "It's been, what? Almost five years?" She stated, trying to make the blonde comfortable.

The penny finally dropped, as Naomi remembered. "You're Sophia's mum!" She practically shouted, causing some of the other patrons to glance her way, adding to her embarrassment. She sat back down and ducked her head to hide the blush she knew was working its way up her face, making the scars stand out.

"That's right, Naomi." Alicia relied quietly.

Gina decided that now was the time to break the tension between Naomi and the newcomers. "Please, sit. Did you ladies want to order lunch?" Gina asked after waving the waitress over to the table.

Millie shook her head. "No, but a drink wouldn't be totally unwelcome."

They all ordered and when the young girl left them alone, Gina turned her attention to Millie once again. "So what brings you all the way to Bath?"

"Naomi does." Millie stated, in a no nonsense tone, as Naomi's eyes snapped to her. "It seems my great-niece has caused you quite a bit of trouble, young lady." Naomi didn't say anything and Millie didn't push. "Sophia's taken full responsibility for her indiscretion and has accepted her punishment-,"

"Punishment?" Naomi knew it was rude to interrupt and she cringed as Millie turned back to her but she, oddly enough, didn't want Sophia getting into trouble. "She shouldn't be punished for this."

"Hmm, that's interesting that you would make that statement, seeing as you're the victim in this." Alicia was intrigued now. "Why don't you think she should be punished?"

"Because she was just a girl when she did this...and heartbroken." Naomi thought about it, not for the first time in the last five years. "I broke Ashley. I'm the reason she killed herself a-and...I've learnt over the years to make peace where I can and not dwell on what I can't change."

Alicia sat before a different girl to the one she met all those years ago and she was impressed. "Well, Naomi...I must say, you certainly have grown up, haven't you? Where did that spoilt little girl go, I wonder?"

Naomi swallowed thickly, unused to praise or compliments, unless it came from Emily. "She died the night a witch placed a curse on her." She finally answered back evenly, even though she was shaking on the inside. This woman was a powerful witch, according to Sophia, and she had the ability to to do far worse than anything Sophia had ever done to her.

"Our craft is not to be used to harm, Naomi."

Rage raced throughout Naomi as Alicia answered Naomi's thoughts. "Did you fucking read my mind?" She whispered fiercely, when she realised that fact.

Gina and Millie had sat silently, watching the interaction between Naomi and Alicia, but Millie decided it was time to intervene.

"She read your face, dear. My niece Alice is the mind reader, not Alicia." Millie stated quietly, making sure she had Naomi's attention before continuing. "You have a very expressive face, Naomi and Alicia picked up on it."

Naomi was ready to go home. The pulses had kick up a notch with her anger and she was tired suddenly. "Sophia shouldn't be punished, is all I'm saying." Naomi responded petulantly.

"That's not for you to decide, Naomi." Alicia stated, then sat quietly whilst the waitress had come back with their drinks. Once she set them down and left again, Alicia looked back to Naomi. "I don't have to explain how we work to you, but you deserve an explanation."

With a quick glance at Aunt Millie, Alicia waited until she received approval, and then took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.

"We are not the only witches in the world." Alicia started out quietly. "We're all over, hidden from society, hidden to protect ourselves. It's been that way for thousands of years, except for a brief time prior to 1692, when it was almost acceptable to be a practicing witch."

"What happened in 1692?" Gina asked, taking a sip of the wine that she had in front of her.

Millie rolled her eyes and huffed. "Bloody colonists and their mass hysteria, that's what happened!"

"The Salem Witch Trails happened." Alicia verified with a smile, as Aunt Millie rolled her eyes again. "After that, witches feared persecution, so back into hiding they went. The thing is, most of us are descended from an ancient line and even though that lineage has spread out over the world, we have treaties in place."

"What sort of treaties?" Naomi asked, very much intrigued by Alicia's story.

"A set of rules and guidelines that we live by. Set to protect us from the outside world, whilst protecting the outside world from us." Alicia told her, smiling. "We've only ever used the craft for helping others, my family's magic goes back centuries, and it's been something that we've been proud of.

My mother first used Dark Magic when she was a teenager, a mere child, and my grandmother, may she rest in peace, was heartbroken that any of her children would use it, but she didn't bring my mother before the coven. She hid Mother's dabbles with the Black Arts from her sisters, her aunts and even her own mother!" Alicia stopped to sip from her glass of wine. "We have laws amongst us, to ensure that we adhere to the treaties. The punishment for using Dark Magic is the binding of one's powers. This is why Sophia will be punished, Naomi. She used blood magic to curse you with, using a bastardised curse with an unobtainable goal, given to her by an exiled member of our coven. My daughter has committed three crimes according to our treaties with the other covens. Sophia knew this when she came to me asking for help."

Naomi gasped in surprise, as Alicia explained. "She knew that she would get into trouble, yet she still...," Naomi trailed off as the true meaning of what Sophia had done for her kicked in.

Millie looked toward Gina, with a sad smile. "I'm so sorry about this, Gina. You've been nothing but kind to me and mine, and this is how you're repaid for that kindness." She apologised, sincerely. "I've been to see our solicitor, and explained fully the situation. Trust me, she wasn't happy with what I've told her," Millie said, pulling some papers out of the satchel she had sitting on the floor, "she was gearing up for a fight, I can assure you." Millie winked at Gina and chuckled. "But I've told her, that if you wish it so, our contract with one another will be broken. We shall not hold you to a promise made on a lie, Gina, it's not who we are." Millie stated as she handed Gina the dissolution papers and then smiled at Naomi. "Sophia lead us to you, to get to you. She used us and what we were trying to do because she wanted to get revenge! It's unacceptable!"

"Aunt Millie, please calm down, yeah?" Alicia leant over and rubbed her aunts arm. "You promised you weren't going to get worked up."

Millie smiled at her niece. "You're right, love. I did promise." She said patting Alicia's hand. "So, there it is. In black and white. If you choose to pull your funding from our business, you're free to do so. We won't hold you to the original contract, Gina."

Gina had remained mostly silent since Millie and Alicia arrived, but staring at the documents before her made her speak. "Millie, there really is no need for this," she picked up the papers and waved them back and forth, "at all. Naomi has something she needs to say, don't you dear?"

"Yes, Mum." The blonde sighed, then picked up her glass, taking a large sip to quench her sudden thirst as she rubbed her chest where her heart was still racing along with the pulses. "We will not be pulling your funding," she started to say, glancing at Millie and Alicia with a polite smile, "because while Sophia could've gone about it differently, I've made peace with everything. In light of what she's told me, I know that the Children of Gemini don't exist and there's no way to end the curse."

Alicia swallowed thickly, thinking about Naomi's outcome. "How much longer do you have?" She asked quietly.

Naomi smiled sadly at her. "September. I can't fight this anymore, you see? I've run out of time, so...," she paused as tears filled her eyes, and she willed herself not to cry in front of strangers, "I've met someone who makes me happy. Who makes me feel like I'm allowed to deserve that. After ten years, I've met someone who cares about me and doesn't care that I'm fucked up and have fucked up in the past. And she's good and decent and everything you'd want your soulmate to be, and for whatever reason, she wants to be with me." Naomi was still amazed by that one tiny fact.

Emily wanted to be with her.

"I love her and even if she never feels the same way, if she can't find it in herself to love me back," Naomi's heart started skipping beats and the pulses steadied rhythm sped up as well, but she tried her best to ignored it, "well, none of that matters, because she wants to be with me. So...I'm thankful to Sophia, because if she had never cursed me, I never would have found Emily. No...I never would have been even close to good enough to be with Emily if it hadn't of been for Sophia."

When Naomi was done, she glanced around the table at her mum, Alicia and Millie, noticing that they all had tears in their eyes but she couldn't find it in herself to be embarrassed. Not about this. Just then, the pulses picked up speed again, causing Naomi to react like she had earlier, almost doubling over.

"Fuck!" she muttered through the slight pain.

"Naomi?" Alicia was the first one out of her seat, rounding the table toward Naomi. "What's wrong?"

Naomi shook her head, refusing to say anything. It had never been her intention to tell these strangers about the stream of electricity that flowed between her and Emily, but another confusing round of the pulses kicked in and she couldn't help herself. "Something's wrong with Emily."

Alicia and Millie looked at each for a moment, before Alicia placed her arms around Naomi and did her best to sooth the young woman. "Who's Emily?"

"Emily Fitch," Gina stated, watching the scene before her, "Naomi's girlfriend. They share a link somehow. "

"The one she's in love with?" Millie asked, getting a quick nod from Gina. "Linked how?"

"It feels like electricity is shooting through my body." She said in between deep breaths as the pulses died down to a manageable flow. "Usually, we only feel them when we're in close proximity, but today, out of the blue, they started without Emily even being around at all."

Alicia sat back down and shared a confused look with her aunt. It wouldn't have been unusual, given the fact that Naomi was cursed, for her to feel those pulses around the object of her affection, because that's how this kind of spell worked. But Naomi should have never felt anything close to the pulses, because it was unbreakable. Both Millie and Alicia were shocked to discover that not only did Naomi and Emily feel them, but that they felt them so strongly.

It was quiet around the table, as the air around them became thick with a slight trepidation. It was too tense, so Millie did her best to be the first one to break the tension around the table, as she downed her drink in one go. "Let's get another drink in and I'm going to tell you a little story." Millie said as she threw Naomi a wink.

Naomi was thrown off guard by the older woman, and that didn't happen very often, as she herself waved over the waitress. Once they had a new round of drinks, Millie let Naomi in on the truth about Ashley, the Children of Gemini and how they were planning to help break the curse.
