They arrived at the scene, though hiding behind the trees. They were met by the sight of Klaus with a woman, probably a witch. Elena was standing within a ring of fire and Stefan was on the ground. The witch was the one causing Stefan the aneurisms, making him growl and hiss in pain. Their tactic had been to wait for Bonnie, who had left to get a pendant as soon as Caroline and Damon had gotten out of the house to leave with her.
Caroline had lost her mind when Bonnie had said she needed to get the pendant while Damon would've downright ripped Bonnie's throat out on the spot, had it not been for Caroline who held him back. But as soon as Bonnie explained that the pendant was connected to the witches and would help them overpower Klaus, both of them had backed down and let Bonnie leave to get it. They were to plan something and not go mad at once, but as soon as Caroline spotted Stefan in pain, all thoughts of plans went out of her mind and she made to rush towards him, but Damon held her back.
Putting a hand over her mouth, he shook his head and mouthed "plan". Caroline was thinking of agreeing, but a yell of pain from Stefan had her backtracking and she threw Damon off her and rushed towards the witch, snapping her neck in one quick movement. She quickly ran towards Stefan who let out a sigh now that the aneurisms had stopped. The fire around Elena exstinguished as well and she fell to the ground.
Damon rushed towards Elena and pulled her up, his eyes locked on Caroline who was pulling Stefan up. "Finally, everyone's arrived!" Klaus exclaimed happily and all of them turned to him. "I was hoping to find Elena here, but I got more than I was hoping for with Stefan coming along as well." Caroline gripped Stefan's hand, glaring at Klaus. "I got the news about a massacre, you see. Never thought you'd go back to Mystic Falls, especially since you proved to me how you were over Elena. I guess you're into blondes now, not that I'm surprised by your choice" Klaus said amused.
"Why are you doing this, Klaus?" Caroline asked angrily. "I was just about to answer when you two so rudely interrupted us, love" Klaus said, looking from Caroline to Damon. "You see, there's a new hunter on the loose, the most powerful one I've ever heard of. He's determined to kill all Original vampires." Everyone gave Klaus a puzzled look. "I thought Originals couldn't be killed" Caroline said awestruck. "No, love" Klaus said, resting his eyes on Caroline. "This hunter has a weapon that was created to kill any kind of vampires. It can kill the Originals and even me, the Original hybrid."
"Not so powerful anymore, I guess" Damon sneered, making Klaus give him an annoyed look. His look, however, turned smug instantly. "I guess I'm not, but here's a fun fact" Klaus said, glaring at Damon. "If an Original is killed, every single vampire they've ever created dies along with them."
The silence that followed these words was heavy and filled with tension. Stefan's hand tightened around Caroline's. "And before you all go mad, I'll make it clear that Katerina is from my bloodline so if I die, you all die" Klaus said, grinning triumphantly. Damon's eyes snapped towards Stefan and then towards Caroline. Understanding seemed to dawn in his eyes. They were all from Klaus' bloodline.
"B-but isn't there a w-way to stop this hunter?" Elena stuttered, looking from one to another. "At first, it seemed he was invincible" Klaus said, looking at Elena. "However, with a couple of witches here and there, I soon found out why he didn't die the multiple times I killed him." Hope fluttered in Caroline's stomach as she quickly looked at Klaus, waiting for him to continue. "I've discovered the only way to kill him off ... and she's standing right in front of me." He was looking directly at Elena.
Everyone's eyes snapped towards her. "What do you mean?" Elena asked, her voice cracking. "The doppelganger's life force is what's keeping the hunter alive" Klaus continued. "And while she lives, I can't live in peace so that only leaves me with one option." Caroline pulled away from Stefan to rush in front of Elena. "You can't kill her, Klaus" Caroline said strongly. Damon was standing in front of her in a second. "How can you be sure that Elena is linked with the hunter?" he asked.
"I have my sources" Klaus said amused. "Elena seems to attract quite a lot of trouble anyway. Everything revolves around you and your doppelganger blood, doesn't it, Elena?" Tears were filling Elena's eyes as she looked at Klaus from behind Caroline and Damon. "So if I don't die, the hunter will kill you and all of my friends will die with you?" Elena asked, tears streaming down her cheeks. "You're not gonna die, Elena" Caroline said, grabbing Elena's hand. She had a feeling Elena would do something stupid. "Besides, aren't you supposed to protect Elena? How are you gonna make more hybrids if Elena dies, Klaus?"
"I already have enough blood to make more hybrids" Klaus said, pacing in front of them. "But my witch found a way to keep Elena's blood in me if I am the one to drain her, very much to my delight. That way, even if Elena dies, her blood continues to be with me." Elena pushed past Caroline. "Fine" she announced, but Damon quickly grabbed her. "Elena, no" Damon said as Caroline pulled her back.
"There must be another way" Caroline said. "No love, the only way to kill the hunter is to remove his life force which is standing right behind you" Klaus replied and took a step closer. "Let's be reasonable here, Klaus" Stefan said. "I'm sure we can work out another solution." Klaus chuckled. "Ah Stefan, ever the optimist" he murmured. "I'm afraid there really is no other way. And there really isn't much time either because the hunter is in Mystic Falls. The faster she dies, the faster we get rid of him. Let's not waste our time by all this talking."
"Stay where you are" Stefan said, veins popping underneath his eyes as he rushed in front of Elena and Caroline, Damon by his side. "If she lives, we all die" Klaus said venomously. "Then we'll die!" Caroline said angrily. "No!" Elena shouted, stepping to the front. "You want me dead, Klaus. I'll die willingly if it means my friends will live on." She turned towards the Salvatores and Caroline. "I won't put all of you in danger if there is something I can do. I'm just one big problem, there will always be some new hunter or something making our lives hell because of me. I won't let you suffer for me anymore."
Protests from the vampires were heard again. "Elena, this is not the time for your heroism" Damon said, watching Klaus intently. As Caroline grabbed Elena and pulled her back, Klaus took a deep breath. "You all obviously have a death wish so it won't really matter if it's me that kills you or the hunter" he said, a mad glint in his eyes. Caroline's heart started beating fast. Where the hell was Bonnie?! How long did it take to get a freaking pendant?!
Damon grew impatient and had enough of Klaus' intolerable babbling. "There are three of us and one of you, even if you're an Original" he growled at Klaus. "You can't win if we were to fight so why bother fighting at all?"
"You really think I would come alone with a single witch?" Klaus said incredulously and just like that, 20 or so people walked out of the shadows. "The vampires for the vampires and a special witch for the lovely Elena" Klaus smiled and the fight broke out. Like Klaus had said, the vampires attacked the vampires and Elena was suddenly standing in a ring of fire again, Caroline thrown away by a vampire. She quickly got up, fighting as hard as she could, knowing she couldn't lose against these vampires now. She saw Damon and Stefan struggle with the others and heard Elena's screams of agony.
Branches were being broken left and right, plunging into chests all around her as Caroline struggled to fight her way towards Elena who was being drained by Klaus. Hearts were flying, bodies were landing on the ground and as Caroline ripped off the head of a vampire, she heard Elena's screams die. Her face snapped up to see Klaus ripping at Elena's throat and all she could think of was to throw him off. She ran towards them, throwing away a vampire in the process, and tried to control all her fear as she saw Elena close her eyes. She pushed Klaus away as hard as she could and caught Elena's limp form.
Damon had seen her in the middle of his fights against the vampires. Damon had seen her run towards Klaus and Elena. But he'd seen what Caroline hadn't seen. He'd seen the witch pulling out a stake. He'd seen her stop chanting. He'd seen her rush towards Caroline, holding the stake high, ready to plunge it into Caroline's back. But he'd also made up his mind. He'd also decided that if he ever was to do it for anyone, it would be for Caroline. "Caroline, look out!" he shouted, making her turn around. But he knew she couldn't react in time, not with Elena in her arms.
And just like that, he'd rushed forwards, pushed Caroline away and felt the stake enter his own heart. Caroline felt all the air being knocked out of her as she saw the stake in Damon's chest. "Damon!" she screamed as he fell to the ground. With Elena lying on the ground, Caroline grabbed the witch's head in a flash, ripping it apart. She dropped to the ground next to Damon, taking his face in her hands. "No, no, no.." she cried as she saw the smirk etched on his beautiful features on which veins were erupting all around. He was greying. "Told you I'd die for you" he choked out and as Caroline felt her heart break into pieces, she saw Damon's eyes lose the glint in them before he was completely still. He was gone.
Damon was dead.
A/N: oh my.. *wipes tears* ... so people, this time you will HAVE to review because I'm thinking about leaving the story here because no one reviews anymore. How do I even know if you like what I write, or if you read it at all? So here's the deal; you tell me if I should leave it here and I will do it. But if you review and tell me you don't want it to end this way, I already have a backup plan in store. So the choice is yours, if you want the story to end on a far better note than a dead Damon then all you have to do is say so =)
