Chapter 25: Friends or More
Other than the wind outside, silence prevailed the environment around us. My eyes were closed, and I was deep in my meditation for the morning, but I could still sense the warm presence near me. Her company brought me the calmest out of anyone. My thoughts had the most clarity and my body was in a state of total relaxation. Of course, I speak about my greatest friend, Tigress.
We both sat in her room, the room we had been sharing over the last week. In a sense, it brought Tigress and I even closer together. We had those moments at the end of the day to just hang out with one another. It is odd, being only ten or so meters away from one another when I sleep in my room seems not different than now, but it is almost like some barrier was taken down between us. I can't explain it, but I believe that Tigress would agree, and we have both enjoyed this time.
The other thing would be how cool Mei Ling is. She had offered to teach me some things she knows about Kung Fu. She has a similar temperament as Tigress, only a little less intense and more playful. She is becoming quite a good friend.
My thoughts were cut short by the shiver that rolled up my spine. Damn this winter weather. I used to enjoy the snow days, but now I just cannot find any comfort in the cold. It doesn't help that Tigress likes to begin the weekends with meditation, and I am shirtless when I sleep. That means meditating in a room that cannot be far above a few degrees Celsius.
"Look, Tigress. As much as I have loved this meditation session, I cannot bare the temperature anymore." I held my arms close to my body to keep them warm.
She smiles, "I noticed that you were getting a little cold. I was wondering how long you were going to last."
I gave a neutral look, "And you didn't think to offer me the chance to let me get some more clothing?"
"No. Don't worry, I am impressed with how long you lasted." She got up and got one of my long-sleeved shirts that was with the rest of my stuff. "It is somewhat pitiful how little cold you can endure without sufficient clothing."
She handed me over my shirt and I slid it on quickly, "What do you expect, I don't have any fur to cover my body."
"That's no excuse, Viper and Mantis don't have much to protect them from the cold." She crossed her arms as she pointed out.
"Yeah, but I don't think their favorite season is winter."
She rolled her eyes, "I'm not going to stay here and argue with you about this. Let's get something to eat."
"I take that as victory."
She looked over her shoulder with a playful cold look, "Careful, or you will have to do some sparring with me in the training hall all of today."
I cringed. She could still thoroughly kick my ass if she wanted to. I don't want to be soar for the entire week, so I backed off. "Alright, alright. I won't push anymore. Let's get some food, I'm hungry."
We both began to walk to the kitchen. Everyone's doors were opened, so it is a safe assumption to guess they were all awake.
Making our way to the kitchen, the sounds of the other masters could be heard. They were all talking in groups, so it wasn't easy to hear what they were talking about. We entered the room, and Viper was the first to greet us, "There you two are, we were all wondering what was keeping you."
Mantis whispered to Monkey, "I have some ideas about that-"
He wasn't quiet enough as I picked up what he was saying. I flicked him off the table while Tigress and I took our seats. Tigress gave Mantis a death glare while trying profusely to hide the blush that was covering her face. It blended in too well with his fur for any of us to see. "We were doing some morning meditation."
Mei Ling smiled, "That sounds like a wonderful way to start in the morning."
Tigress nodded, "It is a way to help keep the mind focused for the day."
Crane looked at me, "Speaking of which, did you get time to get started on this 'Secret Santa'?"
Everyone looked at me. Oh yeah, that…
Yesterday
I sat outside looking at the freshly falling snow. One snow flake would come to a rest softly, and then another. I looked at it mindlessly because I was thinking and remembering. It had been so long since I spent the holidays home or spend the day with friends and getting gifts for one another. I was feeling a little, homesick…
"Hey, Kyle. What are you doing?"
I looked over to see Crane walking with Po. It wasn't the usual duo I would see walking together, but it isn't too rare of an occurrence. It isn't anything like Mantis and Tigress hanging out.
I answered Crane, "Just watching the snow fall, remembering my home."
Po sat with me, "Yeah, but you seem all sad and stuff."
Po's attitude shifted from his usual joyful innocence to something that matched my mood. He does have that great ability of being there like that. I began to talk, "This time of year is full of holidays that I used to celebrate with friends and family. While winter would bring cold weather and short days, it was a way to feel closer to everyone and not think about that all. I am just remembering all of that."
Po and Crane looked at one another and before looking back at me. Crane approached, "What did you do during this time of year? I mean, we have the Winter Feast to look forward to and some festivities."
"Funny enough, my people also have big feasts where the table would be full of food. We had enough left overs to last us a few days as well."
Po nearly gasped, "Left overs? How could you leave anything left over?"
I chuckled, "Anyways, my family used to do some gift exchange. It was what we called a 'Secret Santa'. We would draw names and whomever we got, we would get a gift for them. This was all done where the other person didn't know that you were the one to get them the gift until revealing."
Crane smiled, "That sounds like an interesting thing… If you wanted, we could do something like that here."
I was surprised, "Really?"
Crane nodded, "Yeah, everyone was kind of interested what culture you grew up with. I think this would be a great idea to show us a little. Anyways, we're friends."
Po brought us into a crushing hug, "Friends?! We're more like family now. An awesome, Kung Fu family." He shifted to a pose that was meant to be epic.
Crane chuckled nervously at that. I smiled, "Yeah, we're family…"
Back to the Present
I nodded, "Yeah, thanks for reminding me. The only person that didn't feel any need to be a part of this was Master Shifu. Sad… I was kind of wondering what he would get if he did participate." Everyone chuckled at that imagery. "OH! And Mei Ling said she wouldn't be able to participate."
She nodded, "Yes. Sadly, I cannot stay. I have to return to the Lee Da Academy before the Winter Feast."
Everyone made noises of sadness at that. However, the tone quickly changed to excitement. I pulled out a small pouch that held everyone's names on pieces of parchment. Mantis was the first to get a name, them Monkey, Viper, Crane, Tigress, and Po. Their faces displayed some surprise, but everyone seemed pleased with who they got. I pulled out the last piece of paper to see who I had to get a gift for. I opened it up to see the name…
Tigress.
I didn't let any emotion pass as to who I got. I wanted her to be completely surprised with who bought her gift… Funny, I spend the most time with her, but I haven't the faintest clue to as what to get her. She isn't a person of many material goods, and she doesn't 'treat' herself at all. This might be quite the search.
I said one last thing about this, "Now just get the gift to the person before the end of the Winter Festival."
Po finished his meal with the usual quickness and began to head out the door. Monkey tried to slow down Po, "Woah, Po. Where are you going? We were going to hang out today."
Po looked back sheepishly, "Sorry, Monkey. These last few days before the Winter Feast can be stressful for my dad. I offered to help him today."
Monkey waved him off, "No problem, buddy. We can prank each other some other time."
Monkey and Mantis decided to head out as well. Just as they went through the door, Master Shifu came around the corner. "I see that you all have plans for today." Some of us nodded and others didn't. Master Shifu's gazed fixed upon Tigress. "Tigress, do you mind if I borrow you for today. There are a few lessons that I think you are ready for."
Tigress got up from her seat and bowed, "Of course, Master Shifu. I would be happy to learn from you today."
She began to follow him out. A few moments later, Viper and Crane began to walk out. "We'll catch you guys later. We have an entire day planned out before the Winter Feast." They began to talk happily between one another.
I shrugged and got up from my seat and began to clear my dishes. I could hear Mei Ling get up and walk up beside me. "You got anything planned for today?"
I looked over before letting out a small breath, "Not really. I guess I will see how things play out today. Maybe trek the woods. It can be nice this time of year."
Mei asked, "Well, would you mind a partner for all of that?"
I was taken off guard, but I wasn't entirely surprised. Mei Ling had done quite a few activities with the other masters and me. This was just the first time it would be just her and I. And this wouldn't include Kung Fu at all, like it did with many of the other times. She is a friend, so it would be kind of cool to hang out for the day. I shook my head to clear my thoughts, "Sure, it is always nice to have some company."
She smiled at me, "This will be fun. I am kind of interested how the Valley of Peace is during the wintertime."
I nodded, "Let me just finish up here and get some proper clothing. I don't really have the environmental protection like you." She nodded and cleared the rest of my things. I began to head back to Tigress's (my) room for the coat I would need.
I began to walk toward the village with Mei Ling. I had all my winter gear on, some of which was interesting to ask for down at the valley. They had never seen five-fingered gloves before… Anyways, the conditions outside weren't all that bad. There was no wind, and it was just still, frigid air.
The Thousand Steps had been cleared of snow, so it was easy to walk through. When we made it down to the valley, it was surprising to see the activity that was going on. It makes sense since the Winter Festival was rapidly approaching. Some of the villager were just getting the final ingredients for their feasts.
Mei Ling asked, "So, where to right now?"
I shrugged, "I have a few ideas…"
I began to walk ahead of the surprised Golden Cat. I guess she thought I had more of a plan than this. We walked through the village with a few hellos to the villagers. We approached a few food carts to look over what some people were selling. Some people had some fruits, which were not cheap at all seeing what season it was. Other people sold some items like Kung Fu figurines and stuff like that. It was always interesting to see what I look like as an 'action figure'.
"I can never get used to stuff like this." I pick up the figurine and inspected the craftsmanship. Whoever made it had quite the talent. It had most of the details of my face and clothing.
"Must be pretty amazing."
I shrugged while putting the small me back. "Sort of. I didn't think that Kung Fu Masters were a sort of celebrity amongst the citizens of China. To see so many things like posters, action figures, and other things of me is just odd to me."
Mei Ling looked over with a questioning gaze, "What did you expect?"
"I understand we are protectors of villages and entire provinces, sometimes all of China. I never would have imagined a lavish lifestyle like this. This seems to be something that nobles and emperors would enjoy. I would think that like would be much more difficult." I continued to walk with Mei Ling following behind.
She pointed out, "It seems like you have already seen some hardship while living here based on some of those scars."
My face morphed into a look of surprise, "You saw those? They are mostly on my torso and upper arms. When did you see all of that?"
She blushed hard, but not to the point where I could see. However, I could tell that she was nervous and embarrassed. "Well… I caught a glimpse the other day when you, Tigress, and I were sparring." I nodded my head absentmindedly. She pressed on with questioning, "So… what happened?"
"To get those scars?" She nodded. I stopped for a moment and forced myself to remember those weeks of pain and suffering. I began, "I had only been in the Valley of Peace for a little bit of time. I hadn't gotten the title of Master yet, but I was given the responsibly of protecting the village with the Five. This specific day, slavers came to the valley. They were obviously here to collect some of the villagers as slaves."
Mei Ling looked at me with a saddened gaze, "That is terrible."
I nodded, "After a little time in combat, they held some of the valley hostage against us. It was a lose-lose situation. So, I made a decision that seemed to be the best call at the time. I offered that they take only me and let the villagers go. With me being… unique to them, they accepted. The villagers were free, and I suffered for nearly a month before finally escaping. They beat me to the point where I nearly passed out from the pain. The cold made everything worse. Everything was hit was amplified by ten."
Mei Ling stopped me before she placed her paw firmly on my shoulder, "I am so sorry."
My face shifted to a smile. "Thank you. That isn't the most pleasant memory, but it has been a defining moment of my presence here. I came to except parts of my old life, and I grew as a person because of it."
We continued to look through the items of all of the carts. Mei Ling stuck closer to my side. I didn't mind one bit, I enjoyed the warmth against my side against the chill winter air. I began ask her a question, "So, how did you Crane come to meet? He told me a little, but I want to know what your point-of-view is."
"Of course. It all begins quite a few years ago at the Lee Da Academy…"
Morning had now passed, and Mei Ling an I had ended up in a forest outside the valley. The wind gently moved the branches of the trees and created the whistle that one would associate with winter. We walked the trail that seeped through the snow and created a brown, slushy mix.
"So, what are we doing all the way out here?"
I shrugged at the question. "I don't know. I had never traveled this part of the Valley, and I kind of want to explore it a little."
We approached an abandoned cart that seemed to be a little in disrepair. I looked it over to see that there were some marks on it that indicated a blade. There were some baskets that remained as well, but their contents were empty.
Mei Ling looked it over as well, "It looks like some bandits raided this while it was on its way to the village."
I nodded, "It seems that way. It is kind of interest, there haven't been any reports of bandits in this area."
Mei Ling asked, "Should we notify the city guards for them to starts searches."
I peeled a collection of boards that were laying near the cart and inspected them. The wood was smooth and could slide easily over the snow. It was giving me a nice idea. "We will let them know what we found later. For the moment, I want to show you something I used to do as a kid." I began to walk up a hill that was beside the trail.
We made it to the top of the hill and I laid the boards down on the snow. I held it steady while I offered for her to get on, "Just get on top of it."
She did as I said and climbed on it. She looked back at me with confusion as I got behind her and got close to her. A blush enveloped her face, but my face showed child-like excitement. It had been a while since I had done any sledding, since I was a kid actually. "I'm not sure how well this will work. Chances are we will end up flying off this thing."
"What do you mean-" She was cut off as I pushed us down the hill. We began to pick up speed rapidly as some of the tree wisped by in a blur. The wind was the only sound I could hear alone with the wood scrapping along the snow. It just felt good to do something that was on impulse and didn't have much thought with it. Had Tigress been here, I would have gladly shown her this. Some part of me felt… sadness at that.
We were rapidly approaching a tree as I leaned to the left, so we would turn out of the way. We missed it by inches but ended up flying off the 'sled'. We rolled for a little bit and came to a rest where the cart was. I sat up and looked over at Mei Ling, "You alright?"
She sprung up, "I know I will sound a lot like Po, but that was awesome! Humans are… interesting creatures."
I smiled and shrugged, "Wasn't much of a cultural lesson, but thanks for trying it with me."
She punched my shoulder lightly, "Anytime."
I looked at the cart and decided, "Alright, let's go back to the valley and report what we found."
Mei Ling and I began to trek back to the village when she asked, "So, is this what you do with your free time?"
"No, I actually never do anything like this. I just wanted to do something that didn't include Kung Fu and enjoy some of what I used to back at my old home. I used to go on treks through the mountains with friends and we would sometimes mess around. Today just seemed like a good day to… relive the past."
"I am happy to be a part of this."
I smiled. "Me too. It is always good to hang out with friends, and you seemed like the kind of person to try this out."
"I-" I held up my hand to quiet her. I could hear faint sounds of other individuals and the crunching of snow. By the sounds of it, it seemed like a group of four or five. Got to hand into Tigress, some of the things she teaches me comes out to be handy in the weirdest situations.
I pointed in the direction in which I heard the sounds. Mei Ling's expression turned more serious as she took lead in the direction and I followed. We crouched through the snow as the noise became louder. The voices were familiar, and I knew instantly who they were.
"Darn it, Gahri." Yep, the bumbling Crocs. How luck am I to run into them as they seemed to be doing illegal activity. You know how I know? They were carrying a lot of goods, and I know that they don't pay for any of it.
"Crocs?" Mei Ling looked back at me.
I nodded, "Follow them. We might be able to see if they are the ones responsible for the abandoned cart earlier."
We kept low and out of their visible range. It was odd just watching them walk around the forest with no serious coordination as to where they were going. Fung and Gahri were the ones contributing the most to any sort of conversation out of them all. The others just followed like they didn't have any individuality.
Fung pointed his index finger in the direction opposite to that of the village. "I think that our… umm… base of operations was this way."
He began to walk, but then Gahri interjected, "I don't think that is correct."
I could almost hear Fung growl in irritation, "Alright, Gahri, which way is the correct way?"
Gahri looked up at the sky before making deductions, "If the sun began to rise from right over there-"
Mei Ling tapped my shoulder before whispering in my ear, "Are they always like this?"
I nodded and looked over to her, "Basically. They aren't that great of a threat, but we still need to take care of them." I looked back to where the crocs were and saw that they were on the move. "Alright, let's see where they are heading off to."
We crouched behind some trees and would move as swiftly and quietly as possible. They didn't even notice anything was off. It isn't that hard to imagine, they aren't the most aware group of bandits. It didn't take that long before they seemed to relax a little and picked up their pace.
"Gah, this time of year sucks." Fung rubbed his arms to try and relieve them of the cold.
Gahri, who was much more prepared for the temperature, pointed out, "If you would wear something more, you wouldn't be as cold."
Fung lashed out, "I know, Gahri! You don't have to point everything out." Mei Ling and I got into a better position to see they were walking into a cave. A bit of smoke poured out its entrance to indicate that a fire was still burning inside.
Mei Ling pointed out, "It looks like they may not have an escape from there."
I nodded, "Alright, let's go say hello to them." I cracked my knuckled to get ready for the fight.
We both approached quickly from behind. Even with the loud crunching of snow, they still didn't know that we were here. I smiled when we stopped a few meters behind the unsuspecting group. "Hello there."
They all whipped around with shock as Gahri was the first to respond, "Uh-oh."
Fung rubbed his knuckles nervously, "Uh, hey Guy. What are you doing around here?"
I shrugged, "Well, we were in the area and we noticed indication of raiding along the trading paths. You wouldn't happen to know anything about it, would you?"
Fung desperately came up with an excuse as to why they were roaming the forest. "Well you see, we were on the lookout…" Both Mei Ling and I gave faces that showed where weren't going to believe anything he was going to say. He grabbed his helmet and threw it down. "Darn it! Every time I think something might go right, it goes wrong" His helmet stuck into the snow and didn't bounce like it usually did.
I chuckled, "I don't see how robbing people is 'something going right', but I will correct this anyways. So, I will take it that you all did have something to do with that cart."
My gaze fixed on the densest one out of them, Wall Eye. He didn't even think, "We were robbing people and kidnapping them for ransom."
I smiled and returned my gaze onto Fung. Fung just looked at me with a nervous gaze. He growled, "Fine! Just, get them already."
His group pulled out weapons but didn't move up to attack. I asked them, "Really? You all want to go through all of this?"
Gahri answered, "Not really-"
"Yes!" Fung cut off Gahri before he could continue. "Attack."
Their little group charge us with little to no organization. I humored them with a few blocks and dodges here and there, but I disarmed them pretty quickly and kicked them to the dirt. Mei Ling didn't even mess with them that much. She disarmed and smacked them down with one, fluid motion. Gahri and Fung ended up being the last ones.
While the two were 'better' at fighting, it didn't compare much to two Kung Fu masters. Fung swung wildly at me with a sword while Gahri went for Mei. Fung's strike hit the earth, and I brought my foot down to snap the sword at the base. I palm-struck him in the face which effectively knocked him out.
I looked over at Mei Ling to see that she stood over the incapacitated Gahri. I smiled at her, "Good work."
She chuckled, "Thanks, but they weren't much of a challenge."
"Good thing that the other one isn't here. He is… a hard hitter."
The Golden Cat looked at me with some curiosity, "How is that one any different from these ones?"
We began to walk into the cave, "Well, he is probably four times larger than any of them." I pointed at the unconscious crocs. "And can pack quite the punch. I am not really ever happy to mess with that one."
Mei Ling nodded as she took point and lead us into the cave. When we got inside, the walls were lined with all kinds of foods, spices, cloth, and even some coin. Not only that, but they weren't kidding when they said they were keeping people for ransom. A goat and pig laid tied up.
In the center of the cave was a small fire to keep the space warm. I do have to say I am kind of impressed with the crocs ability to do this. They had never really amounted to this much trouble.
I walked over to untie the goat and pig. Their faces went into panic before they recognized us. They relaxed a little knowing they were about to be set free. I took off the gags from their mouths. "O thank heavens you are here, Jade Master. Those lousy crocs jumped us when we were heading into the village."
I untied them and brought them to their feet. "No problem, they shouldn't bother you anymore." I looked over to Mei Ling, "Here, use this to bind the crocs." I gave her the rope as she nodded and walked out of the cave entrance.
I looked at the two before speaking again, "Mei Ling and I will escort two back to the Valley of Peace if you'd like? It would ensure you two don't get ambushed again."
They both nodded profusely, "Yes, that would be preferable."
I smile, "Alright, let me finish up here and we will journey back."
Quite a few hours pasted since Mei Ling and I escorted the traders back to the village and let the valley guard know about the incident, where the good were located, and about the bounded crocs that were there. They promptly thanked us for our service.
Anyways, I offered to buy dinner for Mei Ling and I, and she accepted instantly. I have to say, it had been quite the fun day. We both finished our meals as were walking back to the Jade Palace. The sun had already disappeared behind the mountains and it was a dark walk back to the barracks. Neither one of us said a single thing between one another. Mei Ling looked like she wanted to say something but couldn't for some reason.
We walked up the final set of stairs to the barracks when Mei Ling swiftly stopped me. She looked into my eyes before speaking. "Look, this was one of the most fun days I had with anyone. You are one-of-a-kind of person. I guess I just want to thank you…"
I smiled, "No prob-" I was cut off in the most surprising way. Mei Ling had connected her lips with mine. I just stood there like a stone and couldn't comprehend what had just happened. I didn't realize that she felt this way about me. It is still a new world for me, and I just couldn't see how I would be accepted in this way by anyone really.
This raised a lot of confusing thoughts for me. The first one was: If she feels this way about me, how do I feel about her? In this moment, with our lips connected, I didn't feel really anything. I viewed her a friend, but I had no romantic feelings for her. My sadness grew a little. This is not how I wanted to end this day.
She disconnected, "Sorry, I couldn't contain myself." She kept pushing on, "If you wanted, we could share your room tonight…" My face lit up in red with what she was asking. Hers did as well. I can tell she doesn't ask this kind of thing of people often.
Beyond the fact Master Shifu would look down upon that kind of activity, I couldn't for obvious reasons. I grabbed her paws and kept looking into her eyes, "Look, it isn't that I am completely flattered and floor that such a beautiful girl likes me like that. It's just that I can't. It isn't fair to not tell you this right now. I don't like you beyond just as a friend." Her facial expression darkened a little. "I wish I could, but something inside me rejects this. Any guy would be beyond lucky to have someone like you. I'm sorry."
Silence prevailed over us. Neither one of us spoke. We didn't know what to say to one another. Mei Ling let out a breath, "Thanks for telling me. While it hurts a little, I can understand, and I respect your feelings. I just thought we were getting along so well-"
I nodded, "And I wish to continue this kind of friendship, it is invaluable to me."
Mei Ling nodded, "I would like that. Just… give me the rest of the night to let everything sink in." She began to walk in the opposite direction from me. "Thanks for the great time."
I nodded, "Yeah…" She began to walk away swiftly. That was it, I was now alone.
I felt a little anger at myself. Why couldn't I feel the same? What was keeping me from accepting her kiss and invitation? I was mentally kicking myself.
I walked down the hall between each of everyone's room. Since it was going to be an early morning tomorrow, everyone was in their rooms.
I opened the door to Tigress's room and I instantly felt something bump into my chest. I looked down to see Tigress was looking right back at me. Our faces were mere inches away, and our chests were pushed tightly together.
My heart jumped into my throat. I dared not breath at this moment. Every part of my body felt like jelly with nerves. My face lit up, and my eye were wide.
Tigress seemed to be in the same situation as me. I could see the colors on her face darken a little, and she didn't move either. I could feel her breath on my face.
In the same instant, we both took a step back from one another. "Sorry about that."
Tigress nodded while adverting her gaze from mine, "I am as well. I should have been paying more attention to my surroundings."
I nodded, "It was more my fault… So, how was the training with Master Shifu?" I shifted the question to hopefully stop the embarrassment for both of us.
She said, "It was… great. It was more of a spiritual training, and we spend most of the time talking. How was your day?"
I peeled off my shirt as I got ready for bed. "It was pretty fun-" I began to explain all that happened in my day. Just going over all the great, new memories took away a little of the pain that I may have cause today. However, I believe this is something that will work out in the end.
Another chapter down, and with even more surprises than you may have expected? Idk, probably not.
Anyways, I would like to give a big thanks to Mathew5641 for helping me come up with the 'Secret Santa' idea. He said I should share a little human culture, and I believed this was a fair contribution. So thank you.
Thank you all for the support, and hopefully the next chapter won't take nearly as long. It shouldn't, I have break in a week and I am not writing another chapter for the other story yet. Stick with me for the time being.
Like always, Favorite, Follow, or Review this story is you have the time. I am always happy to message back to any questions you all may have. It is a way to ensure this story continues to grow.
