Part Twenty Five

It all felt surreal to Clarke as she and Bellamy huddled together near the injured. It had been hard but they had to beg their friends not to make a sound, even a slight moan of pain could alert the Reapers to the fact that there were people inside the drop ship; they had to keep absolutely quiet. In the tense silence she could hear the sound of footfalls and low, husky voices coming from outside. She glanced at Bellamy as she felt him squeeze her hand, it was hard to see his face, it was so dark inside the ship, but just the touch of his hand reassured her. Clarke was grateful that he had stayed, she would be forever grateful that she had him at all, there were moments during their fraught relationship where they could have pushed each other away, but somehow as she listened to the sounds of the Reapers tearing the camp apart outside she knew that they had been destined to be together, she held onto that fact as the minutes and hours ticked by. When the hell were they going to leave? They must have already ransacked everything of use.

Suddenly one of the injured hunting party began to cough loudly. The sound reverberated around the drop ship, echoing off the metal walls. Clarke looked at Bellamy in alarm as she quickly scooted over to the young girl and examined her. The girl's pale face stared up at Clarke in horror as she continued to cough up blood. It spilled from her lips and down her skin, panicking her. Clarke had no medical equipment left, not here in the drop ship; she had no light and no way of helping this unfortunate girl. She had to be haemorrhaging internally. Bellamy came up beside her. "What's going on? Can you help her? She has to keep quiet, princess. I can hear them coming closer." As he spoke those words loud banging came from outside. It frightened the other occupants inside the drop ship and they began to scream in alarm.

"Keep quiet." Bellamy ordered them; already knowing it was too late. The Reapers now knew they were here. As the metal walls of the ship began to shudder as their enemy began to pound on them, trying to get inside, Bellamy and Clarke stared at each other in horror. Their plan had backfired.

Clarke could do nothing for the injured girl; she died in her arms twenty minutes later after continuing to cough up blood. Bellamy had been busy rounding up the injured hunting party. The Reapers were now prying the doors apart, and by the sound of the determined grunts and yells outside, they were coming close to breaking them apart. Bellamy knew it was probably useless, the injured were too weak and ill to be of any use, they wouldn't be able to even flee. He had no idea how many Reapers were outside, and he knew deep down inside he would have to make the choice to abandon the others; the only problem was getting Clarke to agree. Only the strongest would survive, but she had spent her life learning how to save people, not abandon them to a fate worse than death. But what choice was there now? They had tried, but even if she hated him, Bellamy was determined to get her out of camp to a place of safety. The pounding became louder and the injured party began to scream in fear as a chink of light appeared as the doors began to buckle. Bellamy saw the panic in Clarke's eyes followed by a fierce determination.

"They won't win, Bellamy." She cried out.

"No, they won't." Bellamy came over to her side and shielded her with his body as the doors suddenly fell apart and the Reapers began to swarm inside.

It was terrifying; the Reapers were crazy, like rabid animals. Clarke could smell the stench of their rancid breath as they pawed at her body, trying to catch hold of her as she fought for her life. The screams of her injured friends rent the air, freezing her blood and breaking her heart. It was horrific. She could smell the metallic aroma of blood as it spilled around her, her friends were not able to protect themselves, and it had all been for nothing. Clarke screamed as one of the demonic Reaper's grabbed hold of her jacket, his tongue licked his salivating lips as he lunged at her.

"NOOOOOO!" The gun was slippery in Clarke's hand and she nearly dropped it, only recovering in time to blast the Reaper's brains out. Blood spattered across her face and she felt nauseated.

"CLARKE!" She heard Bellamy scream her name and she turned, trying to see through the melee of bodies, trying to find him, but she couldn't see anything, could only hear as he screamed her name over and over. Clarke fired her gun again and again until it ran out of bullets. The ammunition was spent and so was she, but she wouldn't die here, not for these animals to feed on. Clarke drew her knife, the only weapon she had left; it glimmered in the half dark as she began the last fight for her life.

It was utter chaos. Bellamy desperately tried to shield Clarke as the Reapers invaded the drop ship and began to wreak havoc, but there were too many of them. Almost at once he and Clarke were separated. His ears rang with the dying screams of his injured friend's. The Reapers snarled and howled like maniacs as they tore into their victims. Bellamy felt sick inside, he had to avert his eyes as the girl Clarke had cradled in her arms until she died was ripped apart. Bile rose in his throat and he fired his gun at the animal that was ravaging her broken body. Bellamy was glad she was already dead. He felt many pairs of hands grab hold of him and he twisted around and fired round after round at his attackers, sometimes hitting his target, sometimes not. It was so hard to see in the dark interior of the ship. He tried to find Clarke, but he was surrounded and overwhelmed, he fired his last bullet as he was hit on the back of the head. He went down screaming Clarke's name as he hit the floor.

Clarke heard him as she knifed the hands that tried to capture her. She chopped at the fingers, getting a grim satisfaction when she heard the Reaper's cries of pain. She needed to get to Bellamy, she had to find him. Even if she died right now, she wanted to be by his side when it happened. "Bellamy." She called out as she tried to push her way through the throng. "Bellamy, talk to me."

"Here, I'm here." Bellamy's voice was muffled.

Clarke continued forward, taking one slow step at a time. The Reapers were so crazed with bloodlust now that they were actually beginning to turn on each other, which was good for her as they became occupied with fighting among themselves. She heard Bellamy say her name weakly and she ducked to the cold floor of the drop ship and began to crawl toward the sound of his voice. Then suddenly there he was. Clarke sobbed as his hand connected with hers, he was her lifeline and she was his. They stared into each other's eyes, both now sure the end was coming. Clarke didn't need to say how she felt out loud, she could see that Bellamy knew, it was the same message he had in his expressive dark eyes.

Clarke had never heard anything like it. The sound was piercing and hurt her ears like crazy. She put her hands over them as she saw Bellamy doing the same. It seemed to drive the Reaper's into a frenzy. They began to howl and yell as they suddenly rushed out of the drop ship, staggering as they clawed at their ears. Bellamy and Clarke looked at each other in confusion, both having no idea what the hell was happening. Their eyes locked as the ship became deathly quiet. It was like the calm before the storm. Then it all changed once again. Bright lights were shone in their faces and they recoiled, this time shielding their eyes from the glare. They could hardly see as some type of gas was thrown at them. As it hissed and flew in their direction, Clarke could just make out some kind of weird figure dressed in a bio-suit. She tried to remain conscious but the noxious gas was making her dizzy.

"Bellamy…." Clarke moaned before she slumped into unconsciousness.

Bellamy heard her call his name, but he too began to go under. He made a last effort to catch hold of her hand before he too sank into darkness.
