Chapter 2: Memory Lane

People change, but memories stay. Forever.

If there was one thing that I'd never thought I would ever do, that would be going to my twin brother's wedding. Our relationship hadn't been so great and I still couldn't believe that he would be marrying a human. I thought he could do much better than that, and of course, that was very pathetic of him. I think he missed being human, and having a human as a lover, it made him feel like he was human and not some kind of a monster.

"Are you ready, love?" Demetri asked as he walked into my room. I took a look at his calming presence and smiled. No matter what happened, it will always be fine because he will always be there with me.

"Yes," I said with a smile and he held my gaze for a moment before giving me a comforting smile. I took the small green box on the coffee table and placed it in the backpack carefully. It was a necklace from Aro as a peace offering. I wanted to give Edward something old but alas I was trapped in the asylum so I didn't really have anything from our parents to give. The backpack was also filled with blood bags as our supply since we weren't allowed to kill anyone while we were there as it was a small town.

"Let's go," I said and Demetri smiled softly as he held out his hand. I took his hand in mine and smiled, contented to have him by my side.

"Alice?" Bella asked and Alice gave her a smile. "What did you see?" she asked nervously.

"Nothing, I was just making sure everything's alright," Alice smiled kindly at her.

"I'm not going to trip, am I?" Bella asked, glancing down at the beautiful white heels that Alice had forced her to wear. Alice laughed, trying to comfort her.

"Don't worry, Bella. Your wedding's going to be fine," Alice said. Bella looked around, to make sure Edward was nowhere in sight.

"What about Tiara? Edward's sister?" Bella asked in a whisper.

"She's coming?" Rosalie suddenly asked, appearing out of nowhere.

"Yes, I invited her," Alice said casually.

"What?" Rosalie asked in disbelief, looking at the short-haired girl trying to see if she was actually joking.

"She's on her way," Alice told and Bella felt her heartbeat sped up. "It's going to be fine," Alice reassured her future sister-in-law and Bella took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.

"Really?" Rosalie asked skeptically and Alice glared at her as Bella became restless again.

"I believe that family will always stick together. And she is Ed's only living family. And not to mention she is his twin sister. Twins!" Alice said in frustration as more people questioned her decision of inviting Tiara.

First, it was Jasper. Alice had never seen Jasper who had always been the calm one, overreacted. And it took forever for Alice to convince him that her idea was actually brilliant. Both Edward and Tiara needed this. And after last time, Alice thought it would certainly be better if they made peace with her and the Volturi.

Then, Carlisle and Esme. Both of them had been calmed when Alice told them about the invitation. Esme smiled politely but her eyes showed concerned. And Carlisle tried to talk some sense to Alice. But as always, Alice managed to get her ways.

Then Bella found out. And then Edward. Edward was certainly overreacting. Alice found it absurd that Tiara was going to hurt Bella at the wedding since there was a rule about bride and whatnot. She wondered why no one can see what she was seeing. But then again, the last time Tiara and Bella met, it wasn't so pretty. She did hurt Bella and she enjoyed it. In Alice's opinion, Tiara only hated Bella because Edward really loved the human. Tiara was hurt which showed she still cared for Edward. Even if the vampire didn't really show it.

"Thank you for coming," Edward said with a genuine smile and Alice watched as the bronze haired girl laughed slightly.

"My twin brother is getting married. Of course I would've come," she said, rolling her blue eyes. Edward smiled the smile that reached his eyes as he wrapped his arms around Tiara.

"Everything will be fine," Alice reassured Bella and Rosalie with a huge smile. She clasped her hand in excitement and ushered Rosalie to continue working on decorating the place while she helped Bella get comfy with the shoes.

"I told Aro not to have such a fancy accommodation," I said as Demetri and I walked into the five stars hotel in Port Angeles.

"You're his favorite. Of course he'd give you the best," Demetri said, kissing my hair and I grinned. A few tourists gawked at us as we walked to the reception counter. A century of living and I'd gotten used to the stares that we got, but I couldn't help but shot some of the young women my death glare as they gawked at my Demetri. Even the receptionist was taken aback by Demetri's handsomeness. She stared at him, her big brown eyes wide as she took in his smile. I rolled my eyes, getting tired of the attention that he received.

He looked charming, really. Deep red shirt with his sleeves rolled up, an expensive Rolex on his left wrist, black pants and leather shoes and a pair of aviators that hid his crimson eyes. Who wouldn't fall for this man at first sight?

"A reservation for Demetri Volturi please," he said silkily and she blinked a couple of times. He then gave her a sweet smile. I wasn't one to jealous, but Demetri just loved to tease me by flirting with humans. And then he would get super angry when I returned him the favor. I squeezed his hand tightly and he grimaced in pain although he concealed it with a low chuckle. He turned to me and kissed my hair, and I smiled, turning my attention back to the brunette receptionist who was watching our interaction.

"Yes, of course," she stuttered nervously under my patronizing gaze and typed a few things in her computer before giving us the key. "Sorry for the inconvenience," she said and I gave her one of my chilling smile as I glared at her through my big sunglasses.

"This is tasteless," Demetri muttered under his breath as he took a sip of his drink from the mug.

"What's that?" I asked, wondering what the hell he would be drinking.

"Blood bag," he told, sitting on the bed as he took another sip.

"You're being a baby," I said with a teasing grin and he pouted. I smiled as I bent down, claiming his lips. I tasted the human blood, but not as fresh as it would have been if taken directly from the vein. "It doesn't taste that bad," I commented and he shrugged, finishing the blood.

"Are you okay?" he asked, putting down the mug on the coffee table.

"Hmm, okay about what?" I asked, as he pulled me down to sit on his laps. His red eyes met mine and my heart fluttered (figuratively) when he gave me that charming smile of his.

"Are you nervous about tomorrow?" he asked me softly.

"I'm not the one who's getting married," I replied and he smirked.

"You know what I meant."

"I actually...don't know," I told him and he tilted his head to the side to get a better look at me.

"Hey," Demetri called me softly and I sighed.

"I can never forgive him," I confessed and Demetri stroked my hair, and I felt safe and cared for.

"You don't have to," he told me and I nodded. A part of me wanted to forgive Edward and just move on with our life since I didn't see the point of wasting my life hating him. However, a bigger part of me wanted to hold on to that hatred. Why? My thoughts were interrupted by Demetri throwing me gently onto the bed. I laughed and kissed him in the lips, before he pulled away.

"What's the matter?" he asked, knowing I was troubled even without the gift to read my mind.

I sighed. "Just old memories," I told him and he smiled sadly.

"I told you this was a bad idea. But you're too stubborn to listen," he said and I giggled, before settling in his arms, my head placed on his chest. I couldn't hear his heartbeat but it somehow always calmed me. "You should know that I will always be by your side. I will never leave you," he promised and I nodded.

"I love you," I told him.

"I love you too, Tiara," he said, kissing my temple and I closed my eyes. Those tender lips of his kissed at the exact same spot of the stiches from a century ago. It was as if he knew.

Chicago Mental Asylum, Illinois - 1912

"Please, please, I'm scared. Help me mister!" I begged for mercy as the men dragged me into a room. My strength was no match to the taller and bigger men. I was just a kid, so frail and small. The room smelled funny, I still couldn't use of the smell of medicine. There was also the smell of blood. A doctor in his forties, the same age as my father walked in and was staring at me intently. He had a mask on to cover his lips so I couldn't see if he was smiling kindly or evilly. My parents told me I would be safe here, but they were all lying. Everyone kept hurting me here. I let out a yelp when I was being lifted up and placed on the cold, metal bed.

"Please, please sir!" I screamed louder as they strapped my body and I couldn't move. My head turned to my right and I looked at the drill wide-eyed, terrified.

"Shh, Tiara dear. Everything will be alright. The demons will be destroyed," the doctor said as if trying to soothe me. His voice made me shuddered in fear and then he stroked my face with his gloved hand and I whimpered.

"Are-are you going to-to use that?" I asked him softly. I had stopped trashing and screaming, too tired to even fight. All I was left with was fear. All I felt was helplessness.

I am weak.

"Yes, sweetheart. This will kill the demons inside you," he told me as he adjusted the drill.

"Please don't. There will be blood. It will hurt. Everything hurts!" I whimpered, begging for his sympathy.

"You won't feel a thing," he promised and a tear escaped my eye. He strapped my head so I couldn't move it and then he injected me with a large needle. I used to be afraid of needles poking me but not anymore. I was used to it.

I felt numb. I couldn't move.

But I did hear the sound of the drill whirring. I could see the sharp drill coming closer and closer through the corner of my eyes. I couldn't feel a thing physically but emotionally? I was terrified and horrified. This treatment was the worst so far.

"What is it?" Demetri asked and I realized I had rubbed the spot where the drill used to drilled into my skull unconsciously.

"Do you know they used to drive a drill into my skull? It's called trepanning. They said it was to destroy and kill the demons inside me," I told him bluntly.

"Tiara..." Demetri warned me softly. He never liked hearing about my torturous treatments back in the asylum although he knew everything. He simply didn't like me thinking about it and reliving the memories.

"No, it's just...I-I was so little back then," I said. "I was eleven? Or was it twelve? But I was so little, so fragile, so helpless..." I trailed off and Demetri took my hand, and kissed my knuckles.

"You were strong even when you were little. You endured their torture. And now you are strong. The strongest woman I've ever known," he told me.

"I wonder how I survived," I said and laughed a little. "How did I manage to survive those long years?" I wondered and Demetri tilted my chin so I looked up at him.

"I'm glad you did, Tiara. I don't know what I would do if you never entered my life," Demetri said and my lips curved into a big smile.

"And I don't know what I would do if you never entered mine," I said and he kissed me gently. I let out a content sigh.

Edward didn't know how long he had been staring at the old photo. It had turned brownish, but the dull color of the photo didn't make the photo dull at all. The bright smile of Elle made his heart sank, he really missed his little sister. She was his happiness, his sunshine, his everything. She has his love in a way Bella can never have. What would you do? Choosing between your soulmate and your twin sister? He would choose both, really. He couldn't choose just one but for now, he couldn't have everything.

"Hello," Alice said in the doorway.

"Hi," he said, forcing a smile on his face.

"You're not still mad at me right?" she asked and he smiled.

"No, I'm just worried. My sister...the last time we saw her it didn't go very well," Edward said. It wasn't a question but Alice felt the need to explain.

"I know. She hurt Bella. Physically and emotionally," Alice said nervously. "But you are twins! At the end of the day, you are family," Alice said softly.

"I stopped being her family the second I let her being dragged and locked up in the asylum," Edward said, his voice was full with regrets.

"Edward, I can see the future. Everything will be fine," Alice said and kissed his cheek. Edward gave her a tired smile but knew it wasn't going to be fine.

You're damn right it won't.
