Chapter 25

The drive has been long. Laura grew up in a small town close to five hours outside of Chicago. Gabby had been amazed at how quickly the highway scenery had changed to distant skyscrapers to farm lands. She and Laura's mother had talked almost the entire way and Gabby was really starting to feel like the woman liked her.

Just after noon they arrived in the small town and at a local dinner where they were meeting Laura's father for lunch. Eva, who had been extremely board was happy to get out of the car. "Pay! Pay!" She bounced up and down holding on tightly to her grandmother's hand. She could walk a little with support and was getting better all the time.

"We'll play later sweetie," Melissa picked her up, "Right now we have to meet your grandfather for lunch."

"Gampa!" She clapped happily and allowed her grandmother to carry her into the local dinner. Inside an older man who grinned widely greeted them.

"Ah, there you are. These two beautiful girls must be your granddaughters. Oh they're just as beautiful as you described them Melissa,"

Granddaughters? Gabriela was shocked. Melissa had talked about her; and refereed to her as her granddaughter. She didn't know where to be mad or what to think. She thought her reaction to be angry but she smiled up at the man, "Thank you Sir."

"Oh you're quite welcome," He smiled and led them to the table where Melissa's husband John was siting. They had a great lunch and Gabby enjoyed talking about herself and her friends.

After lunch they went back to Melissa and John's house; John taking Eva upstairs for her nap leaving Melissa and Gabby to talk.

"Gabriela," Melissa thought of her words carefully, "I'm so sorry I've bee telling people you're my granddaughter. I know Laura and Antonio…. I don't want you to think of me as your grandmother if you don't want to. I know it must be so hard for you to think about your parents I-"

"It's okay," She reached into her bag and pulled out the unfinished scrapbook she's snuck in. For the first time she realized that even a few weeks ago she would have been angry; angry and at her for thinking it and angry and Antonio and Laura for being her parents now. She knew that Antonio and Laura had done so much for her and she wanted to let them know how much she appreciated all they had done. She figured the medicine and counselling was making her feel better and she appreciated that as well. "I'm really glad you think of me as a granddaughter. Laura's done so much for me and I know…." She started to cry, "She gave up a lot to take me in."

"Oh sweetheart," Melissa hugged her, "Laura loves you. She's always loved you. I love you too," She looked at her and smiled, "Lets go see if we can finish this photo album alright?"

"Okay."

Christmas Day:

Gabby woke up and for a brief moment wanted to go and see if her parents were up, then she remembered what had happened and she began to cry. She didn't think Christmas should exist without her parents; it was always her mother's favourite holidays and it would never be the same because they were gone. Managing to get herself out of bed she walked down the stairs and into the kitchen where she saw Antonio crying; he must have heard her as he turned around and tried stop.

"It's okay Antonio," She stepped forward, "Don't pretend like this isn't going to be hard."

"I know sweetheart," He acknowledged, "But I just want everything to be good for you and…"

She took a deep breath, "Mom always said you were like Dad because you always protected me and Laura and Eva. I like that but what if you don't cry and you get really mad when you're working? All that anger build up can't be good."

He chuckled, "Since when did you become so smart?"

"I've always been smart; I'm just feeling a little better, or I was until today."

"Me too," He hugged her tightly, "Lets get through the day though alright."

'Okay," She nodded; she was glad they were able to talk just the to of them before Laura came downstairs with Eva and her parents came down as well.

After all of the presents were open Eva looked around at all of the toys around her and began to cry.

Gabby who was sitting next to her took her niece on her lap, "What's wrong?"

"Gabby," She snuggled into her shoulder and began sucking her thumb. She was quite content.

"I think she's just a little overwhelmed with all of the presents," Laura told her, "It's a little much for such a small girl. Are you doing okay?"

"I'm alright," She glanced around at her presents, "You know you didn't have to get me this much," She'd gotten some new clothes, make-up and a few cookbooks plus some money.

"We wanted to," Antonio assured her.

She nodded her head, she still hadn't given them her present yet and she wasn't sure if she could. Her mother had been working on it and planning on giving it to them on Christmas; if Gabby gave it to them then in a way she'd be letting a part of her mother go and she didn't want to do that.

"Excuse me!" She put Eva on the ground and ran out of the room sobbing.

"I'll go and-"

"No, I'll go," Melissa stood; "I think I know what's bugging her; she told me a little about it last week."

"Okay," Antonio let his mother in-law go.

Since she heard a door close upstairs Melisa assumed Gabby had gone to he room; so that's where she started, "Gabby," She knocked on the door, "Can we talk?"

A few minutes later Gabby opened the door, "I can't do it," She cried, "My mom should have been the one to give it to them!"

"I know sweetheart," She pulled her into a hug. "But your mother would be so happy that you're giving it to them."

She sniffled and looked up, "How- how do you know?"

"Because that's what I'd want Laura to do."

"O-okay," She walked towards the closet where she'd been keeping the present and took it with shaky hands, "Can you come with me?"

"Of course," Melissa took her hand and together they walked back to the family room.

"Antonio, Laura," Gabby began, "I still haven't given you my present… well its not really mine more like Mom's but…." She began to cry again but was able to handover the present.

Antonio took it and opened it, a smile coming to his face as he looked at it, "A photo album," He said turning the pages, overjoyed with emotions to see pictures of his parents with Eva. "Thank you Gabby!" He stood and hugged his little sister.

"Mom was working on it and- I just thought I should finish it."

"I'm glad you did; that way we can show Eva when she gets older. What do you think?"

"I like that," She smiled and hugged him again.

A few blocks away Matt hadn't come out of Andy's room all morning. Almost everyone had tried to come and talk to him but he got angrier and angrier the more they bothered him. He knew they just felt sorry for him and that's what really made him angry. He didn't want any pity and he certainly didn't want any pity gifts.

"Matt," Samantha walked into the room carrying a plate with toast and eggs, "Bud you have to eat."

"GO AWAY!" He shouted. "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE! I'M FINE!"

"Oh yeah," She crossed her arms, "You're fine? You're yelling and you've been banging your head on the table again," She pointed to the big bruise on his forehead.

"So?"

"So you can stop it with the act alright. I know you're not fine and no one expects you to be fine. We want you here and those are not pity gifts downstairs. Some of them are ones your parents were going to give to you."

"I always hated Christmas in my house."

"I know, that's why you used to come here for dinner. Now can you talk to me?"

"I just want to belong," He blinked back tears, "I feel like I should have died too."

"Well we're all glad you didn't. Now you come down for some lunch and then you can open up some presents. I'm not saying it's going to be easy but you have a lot of people who care about you and who want to help."

"Okay," He stood and walked with her out of the room.

THE END

A\N: So both Matt and Gabby realized that they have people who love and care about them and want to help. This was a huge step for both of them.
