Chapter 25
As I opened the door and walked out I practically ran into Tessa. "Tessa whats wrong? Is it my dad?" She shook her head.
"No, its Dr. Hinders," she gasped trying to catch her breath. "his patient Mrs. Deckner, he thinks she has a pericardial effusion. He needs you right away."
"Ok, I'm on my way." I turned to Edward just as his pager went off. "911 to the ER."
"Ya," Tessa said regaining her breath, "multiple traumas coming in public bus ran off the road into a bistro." I looked over at Edward.
"Go, I'll meet you there." I looked at Tessa. "My dad is in the ICU, Charlie Swan, please go tell him that I was called away for a trauma and it will be a while before my boyfriend and I can visit." I heard Edward chuckle behind me and felt his hands span my waist. Tessa looked at the intimate gesture and tried to hide her smile.
"Tessa, go prep for multiple traumas." He ordered. She nodded and left. Edward whirled me around and kissed me. "Go, hury Dr. Hinders needs you." I turned and hit the stairwell at a sprint.
I reached Mrs. Deckners room to a symphony of alarms going off and a flurry of activity. I turned to a nurse to glove me, then asked an intern, "Stephanie, get me the biggest gauged needle you can find." She nodded.
"OK, how about a ten gauge."
"Is that the biggest?" She scrambled through the drawer.
"Uh, um, no here." She handed me a needle.
"You keep it, this is now your procedure." I pulled over the sono machine. "Ok, there is a sack that surrounds the heart and it can sometimes filled with fluid. There. You see that?" She nodded. She looked like a deer in headlights. "Take a deep breath and insert the needle here." I gestured and she followed. We watched on the sono. "Good, now slowly pull back on the syringe and you should pull out blood." I watched her. "Don't move the needle you don't want to puncture the sack, just pull straight back on the syringe, good." The alarms slowly stopped and she stabilized.
"Wow! That was amazing! Thank you Dr. Swan." She looked at me her eyes bright with excitement.
"Your welcome, whos service are you on today?"
"I um, I'm not sure I heard her alarms and called for a nurse."
"Well, you're on mine now. Come, multiple traumas in the ER we gotta go. I'll brief Dr. Hinders." I started walking to Dr. Hinders office.
"So, what caused Mrs. Deckners Peri-"
"Pericardial effusion. Dr. Hinders in in oncology and the type of cancer that Mrs. Deckner has can sometimes cause pericardial effusion." We reached his office that was the complete opposite of my own. There were papers and folders strewn everywhere. To my left there was a small half dead plant sitting in the corner by the window.
"Dr. Swan to what do I owe the pleasure I was about to do my rounds." He stood up and walked around his desk. He was a cumbersome man in his fifties. His hair streaked with grey.
"Your patient Mrs. Deckner just had a pericardial effusion. This intern here has relieved the fluid and I will be back to check on her later today. There are multiple traumas coming in and we have to go." He looked visibly upset. He had a hard job, giving people bad news, helping keep them comfortable while they died. Glad I chose the specialty I did.
"Um, thank you. I will check on her right now explain what happened. Excuse me." He squeezed his way past and down the hall.
"Let's go." I turned and we left for the ER just as my pager went off.
We walked into the ER and once again was met by controlled chaos. Everyone had their jobs, and was working within certain procedures that were put in place to prevent confusion. I spotted Chief Bane and asked him if he needed my help.
"Chief, this is Stephanie; I put her on my service today. Where do you need us." He turned his clever eyes on us. He maintained pressure on a laceration of a femoral artery of a patient's leg.
"If you're ready to go back out in the field then I would like you out there. Looks like a sink hole has opened up on top of the bus crash, I need you out there helping to triage like last time." I felt a chill at the memories of my last adventure with the train wreck but took a deep breath.
"I'm fine, we can go. If you see Dr. Cullen please let him know that I left and if he would like to help in cardio surgeries as well as ortho I'm not opposed." He nodded and then wheeled his patient into the elevator to head for the OR.
Good now he will know where I am. "Let's go get prepped Stephanie. Stay close, things are crazy, and it's easy to get left behind."
