Zuko and Katara returned to the Fire Nation.
A few weeks later Zuko finally worked up the nerve to tell Katara how he felt. He spotted her in the garden after one of his meetings. He decided to sneak up on her.
He poked her on the side. She dropped the water she was bending.
"Zuko! Don't scare me like that," Katara said surprised.
"Sorry, call it pay back," said Zuko, as he smirked.
"You don't look too sorry," said Katara, as she smiled.
"I have something I wanted to tell you and give you," said Zuko.
"Okay," said Katara. She turned to face him.
He took the stone out of his pocket.
"I thought about what you said. I'm glad you and Aang were able to patch up your friendship. Katara, I want my next relationship to be my last," said Zuko.
Katara gave Zuko a confused look.
"I love you. Will you marry me?" Zuko asked as he held out the stone he carved out for her.
Katara's mouth dropped open. She closed her mouth and took the stone from Zuko.
"Yes, I'll marry you. I love you," Katara said. Katara was about to put the stone to her neck when she realized it wasn't long enough.
"It's a bracelet. I know how much your mother's necklace means to you," said Zuko. She kissed him before he could say anything else. Then he kissed her back.
About six months after Aang and Xing Ying married, Zuko and Katara got married on the Spring Equinox. They married in the Fire Nation.
They went to Ba Sing Se and even visited the catacombs before they went to the South Pole so they could be married by Southern Water Tribe traditions.
A few years later, Aang visited the couple.
"It's good to see you Aang," said the Fire Lord.
"It's good to see you too, Sifu Hotman," said Aang.
"You haven't outgrown calling me that?" Zuko replied.
"Toph still calls me 'Twinkle Toes'," said Aang.
"How's she doing?" Zuko asked.
"Enjoying being Chief of Police for Republic City," said Aang.
"I don't see Xing Ying with you," said Zuko.
"She stayed home. It's only a matter of time before the baby is born," said Aang.
"How are you feeling about that?"
"I'm excited," said Aang, who smiled. "I'm surprised you and Katara haven't started a family yet."
"Well, uh," said Zuko. He was saved when Katara entered.
"Aang, it's good to see you. How's Xing Ying doing? Shouldn't you be with her?" Katara greeted the airbender.
"I thought I'd visit you guys before heading home," said Aang. "It's been a while since I've seen you."
"We've been busy," said Zuko. "You know, ruling a country and all," he joked.
"I heard the United Republic wants to do a statue of you," said Aang.
"Yes," said Zuko. "It feels weird."
"It will be to honor your accomplishments," said Katara.
"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the Four Nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed, and my brother, Sokka, and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. Although his airbending skills were great, he had a lot to learn before he was ready to save anyone. But from the first day I met him, I believed Aang would save the world. And you know what? I was right. With the help of his friends, Aang defeated Fire Lord Ozai and ended the Hundred Year War," Katara told her children.
"What happened after that?"
"Did you and Dad get together?"
"That's a different story. A tale of 'The Fire Lord and the Waterbending Master'," Katara replied. "Now, I think it's time for you to go to sleep."
Katara tucked her children in their beds and kissed them goodnight as Zuko watched from the doorway.
They left toward their room together.
"Well, did the children enjoy the story?" Zuko asked.
"The were more interested in our story," Katara replied.
"The Fire Lord and the Waterbending Master?" Zuko replied.
"You were listening?" Katara asked.
Zuko smiled. "Long enough to know that our story must be a long one."
Katara touched the stone bracelet. Katara and Zuko kissed.
The End.
