Within minutes the mall was in ruins. Stores were on fire and windows were broken, letting the infected inside. During the panic people found guns and other weapons and began killing others. The group not under Rex's old rule, managed to hide out in a small clothing store.
"Great now what do we do?" Mark asked.
The only response was a gun being fired outside their "safehouse."
Suddenly the door opened and they were greeted by Nate, with Don and the girl Chelsea behind him.
"Thank God, I'm so glad we found people who were smart and kept calm." Nate smiled.
He looked tired and wounded. No doubt he was out there trying to stop everyone with Don's and Chelsea's help.
Before Nate could continue talking, the sound of a horde was heard behind him.
"Shit, everyone grab a weapon!" Eric yelled.
With supplies low, most of the group had only a melee weapon, like a bat or crow bar. The only ones with guns were Nate, Chelsea, and Don since they brought theirs with them.
Dave turned to his older brother with a somber look on his scarred, childish face.
"Are we gon' die?" he asked.
"No Dave, we've been through a lot already. We can handle a little horde." Mitch tried to smile, but it looked forced.
"Well Ah don' wanna die." Dave mumbled as he made sure his hat was tight on his head.
"David Xavier Ross; you are not gon' die." Mitch said, with a shocked when his old accent snuck its way back into his words.
"First of all, don' use my middle name, and second, Ah see yer accents comin' back." Dave smiled.
"Okay everybody, the rest of the windows and barricades won't hold those zombies off much longer, say what you need to, and be ready to fight." Eric said, his voice shaking.
"I love all of you guys, you were my new family." Matthew cried.
"I never thought it would end this way." Esteban mumbled. Jackie hugged him with tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Come on guys, we can get through this." Mitch said, trying to be the optimist one for once.
"Just in case we don't, Logan I love you." Jewelle said as she hugged Logan, who looked like he was going to be sick.
"I don't wanna do this." Mark said flatly.
When Dave walked over to Mark, everyone stopped what they were doing to see what was going on.
"Mark, ya may be an ass, but this family wouldn' be the same without ya." Dave hugged Mark with most of his strength. Mark's shield broke.
"I don't want to lose any of ya guys! You guys are the best. I'm sorry I've been a jerk." Mark said through tears.
Everyone hugged one last time before the horde broke through the last of the barricades.
"Let's do this!" Nate yelled.
Everything went to hell in less than five minutes.
Once the horde cleared, they group regrouped in the center of the mess.
"Who's here?" Eric hissed as he limped.
Everyone looked around and noticed that Nate, Don, and Chelsea were missing.
Eric looked at his feet and sighed with tears in his eyes. To his left yelling could be heard.
"JEWELLE! WHERE ARE YOU?" Logan cried.
"Logan, over here!" Mark yelled.
Logan ran towards Mark, his heart beating loudly in his ears.
"Jewelle? Did you find her? Is she okay?"
Logan's heart stopped.
Mark was leaning over a figure, covered in blood, scratches, and bruises.
"Jewelle?" Logan whispered with tears in his eyes, as he fell to his knees. He grabbed her shoulder and moved her so he could see her face. Jewelle's once blue eyes, looked empty, and her face was blank. She looked pale and felt ice cold.
Mark began to cry, silently when Logan fell over Jewelle and sobbed.
A distance away, Dave was screaming at the top of his lungs.
"MITCH!"
On of Rex's panicked followers had confused Mitch for an infected. Once the gun went off the man ran away from Dave.
"Mitch. Yer okay, look at me, yer okay." Dave said as he held Mitch in his arms.
"David…. you have to find a new safehouse… I want you to go and take care of the others." Mitch whispered, as blood flowed from his chest.
"No, Ah ain't leavin' yew here."
"David, please…"
Tears fell from Mitch's eyes.
"But, yew said we ain't gon' die."
"I said you weren't gonna die. I was right too." Mitch smiled, and then coughed up blood.
As Mitch looked up at Dave, he smiled. Not a normal Mitch smirk, but a real smile. He looked normal except for the blood on his teeth.
Dave looked at the bullet hole in his brother. It wasn't right over his heart, but it was close enough that Mitch wasn't going to make it. He wasn't as lucky as his younger brother was.
"I guess you are the badass Dave. You get shot and you're okay. I get shot and…."
Mitch never finished his sentence. He stopped and as he used his last breath he whispered one sentence.
"I love ya, bro."
Dave watched as the life left Mitch's eyes. He became limp, and his face went blank.
David now felt like an orphan again. He felt like the little kid with no brother, and now that he knew what it was like with Mitch, he didn't want to live without him. He did not cry over his brother. He only screamed. Someone in the distance could have mistaken him for a Hunter, and come shoot him, and he would welcome it.
Nobody talked as they gathered supplies. Nobody asked Dave or Logan if they were okay. Nobody wanted to continue this fight for their lives, but they still did as if it was their job.
As the remaining survivors left, two infected walked in to the mall. One carried a bloody guitar, and the other silently sobbed when she saw Dave's hat on Mitch's chest. Slowly Jewelle sat up and growled. Her eyes burned from the lights, so she pulled her hood from her jacket over her head. When she tried to stand she realized she couldn't so she crawled like a cat, over to Mitch.
Mitch sat up as well and hissed, he felt sore but stronger in his arms. His legs felt much weaker than before, but when he saw a Hunter next to him he flinched. When it didn't attack he looked at the infected again. The zombie flash her teethe at him as if she was smiling. He looked at her questioningly and then remembered her.
"Jewelle?" he tried to say but all that a non- infected would hear was a growl.
Jewelle tried to smile again, but her smile faded when Mitch looked at his hands and saw gray claws. Jewelle did the saw and saw sharper and skinnier claws.
The two looked over and saw the other infected.
"Willow?" Mitch asked.
The Witch nodded.
"I know you never met, but this is Zero." She said.
"Well I'm Jewelle."
"Wow, the first female Hunter." Zero said.
"Wait, Mitch where are the others?" Jewelle asked.
"I think they left after we died." He said as he looked at Dave's hat.
"Well let's go find them!" Willow cheered.
"Willow they'll shoot us." Zero complained.
"Not if we prove its us." Jewelle said.
"I like this chick." Willow said, as the four infected went to find their non-infected family that was closer than they thought.
