Ben was waiting for Robyn at the bus stop, and his eyes widened when she came around the corner, just ahead of everyone else.
"Good evening Robyn with a y." He said smoothly, smiling at her widely. "And you look so amazing, I just, I can't fathom my awe into words."
Robyn blushed beneath her makeup. "Thanks. You look pretty dapper yourself. Do you always bring suits on holiday with you?"
"Long story." He winked just as the rest of the Holby gang appeared from round the corner.
Half an hour later and they all stepped off of the bus outside a swanky 5 star hotel. Hollins Hall was a large, sandy coloured hotel with a long window at the front that faced the sea over the road. The sun was already starting to set, casting a dusty orange glow over everything the rays collided with.
At the front of the group, Max took Zoe's arm and led them all to the entrance.
"Name and room number please?" A middle aged man asked politely as they approached the door to the ballroom.
"All 15 from rooms 401-405 then one from room 864." The porter handed over their entrance fee, and once it was counted were allowed inside.
The ballroom was decorated with fairy lights which cast a gentle glow around the room. There was a live band situated at the other end of the room and the tables were scattered around the sides alongside the buffet.
"It's all very Strictly isn't it?" Zoe smiled, smoothing down her dress. "Love the lights."
"And I love the look of that buffet…" Max mused, grinning when his partner hit his arm playfully.
"Come on walking dustbin, let's get some tables and food, we don't want you dying of hunger now do we?" the clinical lead went over to the right hand corner where 3 tables were spare. After some pushing from the guys, they formed one long table. After reserving their seats, most of the group went to eat, that was, except Ethan.
The doctor moved his hand to the inside pocket of his blazer, fingers brushing against the object that sat expectantly, waiting. Despite the nerves, he couldn't deny he was excited. This was the biggest, boldest thing he had ever done and Ethan wanted to do it right. He smiled to himself and scraped his chair back before joining the end of the queue.
Once they had all been fed and watered, the band started up and began to play some songs whilst the Holby lot + Amy, Charlie and Ben chatted together.
Between Cal and Tess, Connie sat in silence, trying to decide on whether to tell Cal about the pregnancy scare or not. She had felt uneasy for a few days now, though she didn't know if that was the result of a baby or simply just nerves. All the same, he could possibly be a father and she felt he should know.
The shrill, ear piercing screech of a microphone shot through the room and someone cleared their throat.
"Welcome all to The Great Barrier Hotel's annual dance!" A woman was stood in front of the band in a long, sparkly black dress that clung to her every curve. She had long blonde hair and a cheery face.
"I'm Christine Chambers and I'm going to be hosting the fifth Great Barrier dance competition here at Hollins Hall Hotel! Now, any couples that wish to compete must sign up with Nora and James over there in the corner-" she pointed over to the opposite corner where a man and a woman sat behind a desk. "In about half an hour, I'll announce the first couple and we can get this ball rolling!"
The crowd whooped and clapped, and Christine paused before going on. "Now as I'm sure you all know, the prize tonight is $100 each to the winning pair! Yes ladies and gentlemen, 100 crisp Aussie dollars! But to get that prize, you must get though the first round of dances and receive the highest amount of points from the judges as well as votes from the audience, then receive the most points from our judges in the second round too! Our judges tonight will be Great Barrier Hotel founder Ms Evelyn Havisham-" a light shone on an elderly woman sat near the door. She smiled and waved as the light moved back to Christine.
"There will also be the director of events Mr Gordon Connery!" The light shone on a brown haired, portly looking man who pretended to bow. "And finally the wicked witch of the judges table, Miss Camilla Brown!" A pinch faced woman with wispy brown hair was put under the spotlight, and she scowled before wafting the light away.
"Remember you have just half an hour everyone, just half an hour! Until then." Christine smiled widely and switched the mike off before wandering over to the buffet. Cal turned to Connie and moved his chair back. "Coming to sign up?"
She looked up, snapped from her thoughts and smiled slightly. "Coming." She rose and made her way over to the table, with Cal at her side. Before they got to Nora and James however, he placed a gentle hand on her arm and stopped.
"What's on your mind Connie?" He asked gently, looking intently into her eyes. Reluctantly, she looked up and sighed.
"Let's get our names down and go outside, I need some fresh air."
"Of course." He replied, a hint of worry making itself known in his voice. They put their names down, told they were the second ones up (Ethan and Lily had beaten them there) and made their way through the crowd of people clustered at the entrance.
The sun was just about to set over the shimmering blue sea, giving the couple a little light in which to see each other in. They walked to a bench that they found against the wall of the hotel and sat down. Connie took a deep breath and turned to him.
"You know… You know I said I wasn't on the pill?" she said quietly, looking down at her hands where she was anxiously picking at one of her rings.
"Go on…" Cal replied slowly.
"You know I said chances were I wouldn't become pregnant at all? Well," she paused, looking up to face him, her eyes twinkling in the fading light, "the odds never seem to be in my favour I'm afraid."
Cal's mouth opened slightly. "So what you're saying is… Is…" He couldn't finish so Connie did it for him.
"I think I might be pregnant." She sighed, her eyes falling to her hands again. "I thought you'd better know, just in case it turns out I am."
He stared at her, first in shock but then his open mouth turned into a grinning one.
"Baby Beauchamp-Knight… Who'd have thought it?" he mused and Connie's head snapped up.
"Wait, you'd want it?"
"Of course I would!" he replied in surprise. "Why, don't you?"
"Yes, yes it's just, well, I didn't think of you as a father kind of guy that's all…" she trailed off. Cal gently reached out and took her hands in his.
"Connie, I would love this baby with all my heart, as much as I love you, and I'm sure as much as I'll come to love Grace too." He smiled, watching as Connie frowned. "What is it?"
"I've just realised, I haven't had a call from Grace's nanny today, or yesterday for that matter. Well, that and I dread to think of her reaction if it turns out she's getting a little brother or sister."
Cal stood and pulled the consultant up with him.
"It'll be fine, whatever happens." He said softly. "Come on, this dance thing'll be starting in a bit."
"Ok, but one thing- don't tell anyone. The only people that know are you and Zoe, got it?"
"Scout's honor." He grinned and they made their way inside, Connie placing her arm through his.
"Didn't know you were in the scouts." She murmured.
"I wasn't, but that's not the point." He whispered back before stepping back into the ballroom.
