Are you still with me?
Less than ten minute after Emily and JJ settled on the couch, the doorbell rand. Kenny immediately got up and answered the door, allowing the team to enter the home. "Hey guys," greeted JJ as they entered.
"How are you feeling?" asked Reid as he sat down near his friend.
"I'm fine, Spence. A little sore, but that's expected," JJ assured him.
"What's going on Hotch?" Emily asked. "Last night you said just you and Dave were coming over to talk with us. Has something happened?"
Hotch looked at her and asked the question they were all dreading to hear the answer to. "Have you had the chance to check your mail yet?"
Emily shook her head, "It's all up in the office. I was going to go through it all tonight." Emily thought about his question some more and looked up at her boss. "The Unsub made contact, didn't he?"
Hotch turned his head to Reid and asked him to check the office. Once the genius was on the move, Emily's questioned was answered. "Each of the other couples all received a letter postmarked from Alexandria, Virginia. They all included a date of when the Unsub promises to see them. The other three dates are for three out of four of the weekends in June. We think your letter will contain the fourth date."
"What's the date?" asked JJ. Noone in the room wanted to answer the blonde's question. "What is the date?" she asked again.
Rossi sat down on the coffee table in front of the couple. "June 6th."
Emily snuggled Hope closer to her chest as she looked up at her pseudo-father. "That's next week."
"We know," said Morgan. "We believe he has been keeping an eye on everyone. With you just giving birth and JJ getting shot, it makes next week the best opportunity he will have for getting to you both."
"Is it a coincidence that the dates are during Pride Month?" Kenny spoke up from his spot by the door. He knew he should not have been there, but his sister was in danger. Hell, his wife and son were in this house and could be in danger also, so, Kenny felt like he had a right to know what was going on.
Hotch looked over at the man and shook his head. "No. Given the nature of his letters, we think it is on purpose to happen during June."
"What's the plan?" asked Emily.
Hotch sat up straighter in his seat. "First step is to see if our hunch is correct…"
"It is," called out Reid as he entered the room. They could all see him holding a letter in his gloved hands. "It begins the same way as the others, but there is more added to it."
"What does it say?" asked Morgan.
"Judgement Day is almost here: See you June 6th. Then you will see that only a man can truly satisfy you," Reid read off the message.
Emily cringed at hearing the words that were read. She has heard those words more times than she can count. "So we now know he is targeting the couples," Emily said.
"It looks that way," agreed Hotch. "From now on one of us will be here with you two at all times." Hotch held up his hand, effectively stopping any protest from happening. "It's not up for debate."
Emily huffed as she walked back over to the couch with the newborn, placing the girl in JJ's arms. She looked up at her boss. "You are using us as bait, aren't you?"
"We are hoping it doesn't get that far," assured Hotch.
"There are four children in this house, Hotch!" exclaimed Emily.
"And we are all going to do everything we can to keep them safe," he assured.
"What's the plan?" asked JJ.
"Jennifer?! You can't be serious about cooperating with being used as bait," the new mother asked her wife.
JJ reached to her wife's lap and took her hand in her own. "Em, it's not like we have a choice. We are first on his list. He's coming after us anyway. If we run and hide ourselves from him, he could go after another couple. We are the best equipped to handle him."
Emily stood up from the couch and picked up Hope. Holding the little girl close to her chest she responded with tears in her eyes, "I…I can't talk about this right now." Emily quickly ran out of the room with her newborn daughter and up the stairs to her bedroom.
"Emily…"
"Let me go," Rossi stopped JJ from running after her.
JJ turned and looked at the man Emily considered a second father. Nodding her head, stepped off the bottom step and motioned for him to follow her wife up to their room. Walking down the hallway, Rossi found the new mother in the nursery. She was sitting in the rocking chair watching as Hope slept peacefully. Looking closer he could see the tear tracks on the mother's cheeks. Reaching his hand up ready to knock on the doorframe, Rossi was stopped by a soft, "I'm being irrational." Rossi didn't answer her – he just stepped further into the room. "She's right. We are trained for this. There are so many people here to protect us. All those other couples are just so helpless compared to us. But…"
Rossi took this as his cue to speak up, "But that doesn't stop the fact that you are a mom with a newborn, twins that went through a scary ordeal less than a year ago and a wife who is recovering from being shot."
Emily nodded her head, still refusing to look up from the baby in her arms. "Does it make me a bad person to wish it wasn't us that he chose to focus on first?"
Rossi shook his head, "Oh, bella, it makes you human. Is it scary? Of course. But we are all going to do everything we can to keep your family safe. You believe in this team, right?"
Emily could probably claim whiplash from the speed that her head shot up to look from Hope to Rossi. "Of course I do. How can you ask that?"
Rossi just smiled, refusing to answer her question. "We plan. We profile this Unsub. We keep everyone safe."
Hope took this opportunity to squeal out what could be considered a laugh at her mother. This caused both of the adults in the room to chuckle as Emily bent her head down and placed a kiss on the newborn's head. She turned and started to walk out of the room. "You coming? We've got an Unsub to profile."
Not wanting to bring to attention the sudden shift in his pseudo-daughter's mood, Rossi just nodded and replied, "Right behind you."
