The car ride back home was uneasy and dangerously quiet. Tony had been in a good mood when he left and Ziva was having more and more doubts about when to tell him. Tony put the music on low and started to hum along to whatever song was playing on the radio. As he bobbed his head up and down in time to the rhythm, he could sense the tension hanging around Ziva. He said nothing, but when he pulled into the driveway, he turned to face her.
"Okay Zi, what's going on, you haven't said a single sarcastic comment about my singing the entire way back." When she didn't reply straight away, Tony started to feel unsettled. Ziva breathed deeply. I have to tell him now. She whispered to herself, before taking Tony's hand.
"Do you remember the time when you came to my house for the first time?"
"Yes…"
"Well I think something must have been wrong with my medication."
"Okay you've lost me."
"Tony, I'm pregnant." Tony stared at her for a minute without saying anything. Ziva stared in desperation at his blank face without saying anything, as she tried to work out what he was thinking. But the look on his face was something she hadn't seen before, a face she didn't recognise. He slowly removed his hand from her clenched fist, before saying quietly,
"Why didn't you tell me."
"Tony, i…"
"No, Ziva. Why didn't you tell me?" The calm anger in his voice stunned her. She knew he would be shocked but she didn't expect this reaction.
"I did not know, Tony. I mean I had my suspicions something was up…"
"Something was up?! Ziva that was almost 3 months ago! And you didn't even think to tell me!" His voice gradually got louder and louder. By the end of it he had climbed out of the car before slamming the door shut. Ziva quickly followed him before adding,
"I do not know what went wrong Tony! I had been taking my medication so obviously something went wrong."
"Yeah," Tony scoffed, "Obviously."
"But I only realised fully when I was speaking to Rosalie. And she said it would be better to wait until later on to tell you do so it did not ruin your day."
"Wait," Tony's voice started rising again, "So your new best friend, who happens to be an assassin by the way, knew before me?"
"Please Tommy," Ziva yelled, trying to keep their cover, "Not out here!"
"Why not?!" Tony retaliated, "The whole world apart from me seems to know anyway!" He stormed up the steps before Ziva caught up to him, and swung him around to face her. They stood in silence for a few seconds, glaring at each other whilst Ziva decided how best to reply.
"Because, Tony," she said quietly, "if Gibbs finds out I will be kicked off the team for sure." And with that, she stormed into the house and into the bedroom before slamming the door. Tony silently screamed before kicking the wall with enough force to leave an imprint. He cursed as a pain jolted up his leg, then grabbed his laptop before heading out of the house and down the road to the park.
At the end of the road, was a small but neat park. It had a small children's' area, but the view of that just reminded Tony of his situation and so he headed over to the park bench on the opposite side to the park. This bench was also conveniently located near to the local café, so he switched onto his laptop and joined himself to the Wi-Fi.
"Gibbs?" Tony looked desperately at his boss, who had appeared on his laptop screen.
"Make it quick DiNozzo," His boss replied, "I was in the middle of a meeting."
"Ziva's pregnant." Tony replied quickly. He knew he would get in more trouble if he didn't say, and he knew if he didn't say soon then he would end up avoiding it entirely. Gibbs's face turned into a confused and slightly pissed off expression.
"What?"
"I'm sorry boss, I had no idea. She literally just told me and I ran off. I swear we were being careful and I…"
"Hold on," Gibbs interrupted, "Why did you run off?"
"Because I was so angry, I mean she has obviously known for a long time and didn't even bother to tell me I mean…"
"Oh grow up Tony." Gibbs's sudden interruption again made Tony jump and look confused at his boss.
"Huh?"
"Be a man. You got yourself into this mess, so you have to sort this out yourself."
"But I thought you would be mad?"
"Of course I am DiNozzo, what the hell did you think was gonna happen? But that can wait until you get back but for now, do what you think is right." And with that, Gibbs ended the chat. Tony say perplexed for a short while before grabbing his laptop and running home. This was something he had to do.
