Chapter 25
A Lot Of Making Up To Do
Toby dreaded waking up the next morning. He was hoping everything was a terrible nightmare. He was hoping that he'd wake up in bed with Spencer right beside him, but he knew that it wasn't going to happen. That's why he just wanted to sleep the day way. Expect that he didn't count on a blonde giving him a wake up call.
"Rise and shine, Toby." Alison chimed as she pulled back the curtains in the living room, the light streaming onto Toby's face.
He groaned loudly as he pulled the covers over his head."I don't want to get up, Ali. I'm too miserable." He groaned again when he felt her weight come down on him when she sat on him.
"I can't do that because I care about you and I don't want you to spend the day moping around. I know you're probably hungover so I got you some aspirin." She pulled back the covers and showed him the bottle of aspirin and the bottle of water.
"You know what else cures hangovers? If you keep on drinking."
"No, we are not going to go back to that. You've been doing pretty good with the whole drinking thing, so let's keep it that way. I made breakfast, so get up before I come back with a bucket of water."
"I really need to get new friends." He mumbled once he was sure that Alison was out of the living room.
He slowly rose up from the couch and brought his hands to his face. This wasn't a nightmare, he was in his own personal hell. He grabbed the bottle of aspirin and water before heading into the kitchen. He was surprised to see Alison filling up a bucket of water in the sink.
"Oh, good you're up. And I was this close to waking you up with a cold shower." She teased.
"I'm glad I got up when I did then." He said before hoping onto the counter next to the sink.
"Where's your shirt?"
He looked down at his bare chest and shifted on the counter a little."I took it off last night because it got hot and I don't know where I threw it."
"You know my dad isn't going to be too happy seeing some half naked and hungover guy just lounging around in our kitchen."
"Well, then it's a good thing your dad knows and loves me. He knows that I'm just, as you would say, like your annoying brother."
"Shut up." She playfully elbowed him in the ribs."Eggs are on the stove and bacons in the microwave."
"You are wonderful." He sighed as he hopped off the counter to go fix himself a plate. He couldn't help but notice that as he was making his plate that Alison kept glancing over at him.
"Want to tell me why you came over to my family's house last night drunk?"
He shrugged."I just needed a place to stay. Spencer and I had a fight last night."
"On a scale of one to ten, how bad is it?"
"Fifteen." He grumbled out before hoping back on top of the counter and shoveling his breakfast into his mouth."She basically cheated on me with her ex-boyfriend from high school."
"Drinking isn't going to take the pain away, you know." Alison replied, but Toby didn't need for her to say it for him to know. The alcohol might have helped last night, but today he just felt even worse about everything."What are you going to do about Spencer?"
"What can I do? She's a grown woman and can make her own decisions. As for right now the only thing I have control over is our baby and he's not even here yet."
"He?"
"Yeah, it's a boy." Toby said and even though he was angry and hurt, he still smiled when he thought about his son.
"Congratulations, Tobes."
"Thanks, but I need a favor."
"Sure."
"I need you to help me move out my stuff."
Spencer didn't know what to do with herself. She couldn't eat. She couldn't sleep. And she knew all this stress wasn't good for the baby, but she brought it amongst herself. If she hadn't have made the mistake of seeing her ex behind her fiancés back.
She and Andrew never crossed any lines. They never kissed or took their relationship to any sort of physical level. But she lied to Toby and was sneaking behind his back to see someone else. Toby felt betrayed and she could never forgive herself for that.
That's why she was left a note at the front desk of Andrews hotel to let him know that she couldn't see him anymore. She didn't want to see anymore because the only person she wanted to see was Toby. Expect, she wasn't expecting what she saw when she came home.
Toby's truck was in the driveway, but there was also another car there too. Toby's truck was filled with boxes and Spencer felt her heart breaking. She quickly got out of her car and made her way up the walk away. She was about to open the frontdoor, but someone else did.
"Toby." She was so happy to see him after not being able to have him next to her last night. He didn't look too thrilled to see her
"Spencer." He glanced at her up and down before walking past her and towards his truck. Spencer followed him."I just came to get my stuff and this is the last box."
"Toby, please don't leave."
"Why not? I'm just making it easier for you to see Andrew now. You wont have to sneak around behind my back anymore and I won't care."
"If you could just give me some time to apologize-"
"Spencer, this situation is gonna require more than just an apology. How am I ever going to be able to trust you again?" He asked, his voice cracking just a little as he spoke.
"I know that-"
"Toby, are you ready to go?" Spencer was interrupted when Alison came out of the front door. She was surprised to see her."Hi, Spencer."
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to help Toby with his things." Alison explained before turning back to Toby."You ready?"
"Yeah, I'm done here." He replied before turning back to Spencer."Ill see you next week at our next doctors appointment. Just because we're having problems doesn't mean that I'm not going to make sure our child is taken care of."
"I really am sorry, Toby." She repeated for what seemed like the millionth time, but he still just looked at her. He turned away to get into his truck and pulled out of the driveway. Spencer just watched as he basically just drove out of her life.
"What do mean Alison was there?"
"It means the same thing the first time I said it. She was there at the house helping Toby move out his stuff." Spencer explained for the second time.
"You never told me that Toby and Alison were so close."
"Yeah, apparently they knew each other from the past and were really close friends."
Melissa raised her eyebrows at those words."Friends like friends or friends?"
"They have a platonic relationship."
"Did he tell you that or did you just assume that it was platonic?"
Spencer finally put her menu down on the table."Am I going to be interrogated this entire lunch?"
"No, but I think you should look at who just walked into the club." Melissa said and Spencer turned in her chair to see Alison walking in with her mother.
"You have got to be kidding me." Spencer groaned."Just my luck."
"Well, looks like you're about to get even more lucky because she's on her way over here."
"Great." Spencer glanced over her shoulder to see Alison approaching the table.
"Hi, Spencer, Melissa." Alison said as she took it upon herself to pull up a chair and join them.
"Hey, Ali. Surprised to see you here." Melissa said
"I just came with my mom to drop off a few things that a client needed. They just insisted that we bring the paperwork here."
"Lucky us." Melissa mumbled as she took a sip of her wine.
"And Spencer I'm sorry about earlier today. It's just that Toby asked me and I just couldn't say no-"
"It's okay I understand that you were helping out a friend."
"So do you think you and Toby will get back together soon?" Alison asked and those words got Spencer's attention. It wasn't just the words, but how Alison said it.
"I really hope that we do."
"Interesting."
"Why do you ask, Ali?" Melissa asked.
"Because Toby's a total catch and anyone would be lucky to have him."
"Someone like you?" Melissa implied, but Alison just laughed.
"Anything thing is possible. I'll talk to you guys later." Alison said as she excused herself from the table to leave with her mother.
"I hate her." Spencer said as she watched Alison's disappearing figure.
"Thanks for helping me move back into the loft."
"No, problem."
"No, Ali I really owe you because if you hadn't have been there I wouldn't have been able to hold it together when I saw Spencer." He pulled his friend in for a tight hug. A warm feeling came over him as always.
"I should get going." Alison said, but it sounded mumbled because her head was buried in his chest.
"Yeah, you should it's getting late." He replied, but neither of them moved from their hug. In fact, he was pretty sure that Alison held him tighter.
He finally pulled away from the hug and took a few steps back."Thanks for coming back to check on me and for making me dinner."
"Anytime. Goodnight." She said before walked out of the door and into the night. Toby closed the door and locked it before going to have a seat on the couch.
He smiled to himself when he remembered the time he and Spencer came up here for coffee. They weren't together then, but she still meant so much to him. He pulled out his phone and started scrolling through his contacts. He found that familiar number and dialed. He got the voicemail.
"Hey, it's me and you obviously know it's me because you have caller ID. Look, I just wanted to call you and say...that I'm pissed off at you, but that doesn't mean I've stopped loving you. I love you, Spencer, but I just need a little time." He sighed into the phone as he ran a hand through his hair."I promised that I'd love you, today, tomorrow, and even when we're old and grey. Nothing's going to change that...besides my heart won't let me even if I tried. Tell my son that daddy loves him and I love you. Goodnight."
He hung up the phone before heading into the back to get ready for bed. The one thing he hated about this was that he had to sleep at night without the love of his life in his arms. He didn't get to hold her at night.
He was brushing his teeth when he heard a knock at the door. He glanced at the clock in his bedroom to see that it was way past midnight. He rinsed out his mouth before heading to the front door and opening it.
"Hey."
"Hi."
Toby was surprised to her at his doorstep in the middle of the night and in the pouring rain. He did something he didn't expect himself to do. He joined her out in the rain and pulled her into his arms. He held her more tight than humanly possible like he never wanted to let her go again. During the hug that familiar warm feeling spread throughout his body. He pulled back from the hug to cup their face in his hands and planted his lips upon hers. That kiss had so much passion that it felt like the feeling of...falling in love all over again.
