I'm really getting tired of my unfinished stories, but just now I got Changing Lives to its ending point which was amazing. It was three years in the writing, so I'd say that it was about time. I reckon it was the third fic I had ever made. Either way, I'm looking forward to getting this finished as well now pretty anxiously. It's not that I'm not exactly having fun writing these things, but the if I could, I'd just like to have my thoughts plastered on here with some kind a machine hooked to my brain instead of torturing my fingers and ear from this clicking. Anyway, I do believe I'd be a lot more efficient and better if I could just skip the whole 'writing' part. But let's get on with the story. I am sorry for all the wait still for you as well.
I stayed put in my place in the Bella household with no complaints. I did believe that it'd be for the best. I didn't want to get her annoyed and set her bristles with me. I doubted that she actually hurt me, but I wasn't going to risk it. Either way, I wanted her to trust me, make her believe that I was hers as much as I could. I forced a smile on my face when she would do the things that lovers were supposed to be happy about together. Thankfully, she didn't dare to touch me too much in the fear of hurting me seriously. I needed to be careful anyway in my situation which I still couldn't quite believe. But if I really was carrying Jacob's child, I'd do anything to protect it. I just hoped Bella wouldn't notice, because who knows what she might do then. I needed to find some kind of a way out before he developed a heart.
Two weeks in, I had gained Bella's trust. It wasn't exactly me just doing everything she said, but it was to thanks to a certain incident that happened one evening. Bella was outside on her usual patrol which she did every night before we went to bed. Even though there was no way that they could have followed us here, she said, she wanted to make sure for my sake. She didn't want me to be worried about anyone or anything hurting us, because she knew what a 'worrier' I was.
But that evening a salesman dropped by. Well, it wasn't exactly a salesman, but a Mormon. Bella was was too far out to come in as quickly as I got to the door. I knew that I was supposed to stay inside and let Bella deal with anyone who came to our door which hadn't happened until then, but it just came automatically to me to go open the door for whoever was knocking. So I did.
He gave me pamphlets and leaflets about his persuasion and welcomed me to join them at their meeting place. I had never been much of a small-talk kind of a person and it was rather uncomfortable to try and talk with him, but finally he went away and I counted how many times I had said 'thanks' in just four minutes. But after he was gone, I just closed the door with all the papers in my hands turned around. There Bella stood with an incredulous expression on her face, arms stretched out by her sides. Only then I had realized what I had done wrong.
"Oh, I-I'm sorry. I didn't realize, I just, he knocked...", I stammered not really knowing how to make things alright again. I feared I had completely failed her trust then.
Instead of anger and disappointment though she walked over to me and grabbed me into her arms, squeezing me tight against her chest. Well as tight as she could without breaking me. "I'm... It's alright, baby", she said emotion clouding her usually very clear voice.
I did not understand quite yet what it meant for her, for me right then, but after that day, she didn't try to lock the doors whenever she went even farther away.
But time was ticking away and I had to come with some type of a plan. There had to be a way now.
"Edward! Hey, you know, we're really running low on food. We should go to the shop and pack up on groceries today", Bella yelled to me from the kitchen. I was currently just doodling in my little green notebook in the living room, basking in the warm glow of the fireplace when she told me that. I realized she had said 'we' which meant a way out for me. "Sure", I quickly answered after noticing myself that I had got wrapped in my thoughts.
Then I wrote in my notebook the following in small text:
Call this number. Tell them Edward is in Winter Harbour and give them this address. Do not call the police.
Burn this note and you can forget about me afterwards. Please, this is very important. Do not say a word to anyone.
I scribbled the phone number down and checked the four times before ripping the page of and tucking the piece of paper in my jeans' pocket. Bella went to the door and I scrambled over to her and threw on my jacket. "What's your hurry, dear? The shop's open till four, don't worry", Bella said with a chuckle. I forced myself to laugh as well while my stomach getting tied in knots.
"Nothing. But I'd like to get some green tea if that's alright? I really like it and I haven't got any of it in a long time", I said as we got into the car. "Alright then. We'll get you your green tea then. Anything for my Edward", she said smirking.
Once we got into the small, village shop I had to restrain myself from quickly going to the cashier who was an old, graying lady with big glasses perched on her nose. I forced myself to follow Bella around the shop and get the items we needed. Then we where finally ready to go and pay.
"Hello! I haven't seen you two before, I believe? Are you the new folks down the road?" the lady asked when we got to the register. "Yeah, we just got here about three weeks ago. I did come around few times here, but we were out of food again", Bella said. "Oh yes, I do remember you coming here a couple times, but I haven't seen you here before you handsome fellow", the lady said and laughed. I grinned in politeness. "Oh, I'm Edward."
I needed to get Bella away for a while so that I would be able to slip the note to the lady. I remembered then.
"Hey, I forgot to grab the green tea. Could you fetch it for me, Bella?" I asked her. "Yep, just a second."
As soon as her back disappeared from view behind the wooden stands filled with food items, I turned to the lady and got the note out of my backpocket. I slid it over to her on the table. She looked at me with confusion in her expression. I gave her a look to tell her to keep quiet and unfold the paper.
She read it and with a slightly frightened look turned back to me. But in that look that only lasted seconds as she stared at me with wide, grey eyes, I knew she would do it. Then Bella came back and put the tea on the table along with everything else. I stressed if she would notice the note that was still in the old lady's hand, but at least it was folded close again so that she couldn't read it. The lady collected herself fairly quickly which I was rather impressed by and then we just left with a thanks and a bye.
All I now had to do was wait.
"Hello? Hello?"
"Yes? Who is this?"
"This is Claire Woddon from Winter Harbour shop."
"I'm sorry, I think you must have called a wrong number, I don't-"
"I was requested to call this number by a fellow named... Edward?"
"Edward?!"
"Yes, he seemed to be in a bit of a pickle. He asked me to give you this address."
Jacob swallowed thickly and grabbed a pen and paper. "Thank you so much."
