Night in the Cells
This story has been prompted by Sarah and two guests and the various prompts were
Robbie gets into a bit of trouble (you know dodgy, unlawful behaviour) and he's scared and confides in Jason and opens up to him/ more depth into the Twins relationship, maybe a conversation where they're alone and Robbie opens up to Jason/ The twins end up in jail and are originally messing about and bickering but then end up having a very in depth, deep conversation.
As you can see, the three prompts are quite similar to one another, so I decided to merge them into one story!
Hope you all enjoy it.
Jason's still not sure how it happened, he can't quite wrap his head around it. One moment he was down town, having a laugh as he made his way back home after a night out with friends and now... well, he's definitely not at home.
Although, just because he doesn't exactly know whyhe's found himselfin a prison cell, he knows it's all Robbie's fault without a doubt. If his twin hadn't been such a gobby little shite, if he'd just kept his mouth shut as they walked past the pair of police officers, then Jason would be at home right now, watching some rubbish reality TV and avoiding his mum's food at all costs.
But no, he's not doing any of that because he's trapped in a dingy cell, the only company being Robbie, who he's refusing to speak to, because has he mentioned that it's all his fault? Because it is. In fact, it's taking all of Jason's self restraint to not smother his brother with his pillow, and that's just to shut him up.
"Come on Jase, don't be so dramatic, it ain't that bad." Robbie groaned, trying to start up a conversation for the fourth time in mere minutes, with little luck.
The only response he got was Jason huffing in annoyance instead, whilst still avoiding all eye contact. Jason checked his watch, almost screaming in frustration when he realised that he still had ten more hours of this hell to get through.
Had he mentioned that his family had decided to not bail them out, leaving the pair to stew in a cramped cell for the night? Because they had, in fact Freddie had downright laughed down the phone when he had been told. At least Sandy had been sympathetic, though she had still said the bail price was too high to get them both out.
She hadn't sounded too impressed when Jason told her to leave Robbie to it, and get him out. Actually she'd hung up on him and all dreams of a rescue had died with the phonecall.
He was so going to call childline up when he got home. After all, he was still under 18 (albeit by four days), and leaving your child to rot in a cell, with the bastard who had put him there, had to be some sort of child abuse. It just had to be.
"Lighten up Jase, we've got all night, you can't just ignore me," Robbie said, trying once more to make his brother talk, though with little belief that he'd be successful. Jason could always hold a grudge when he wanted to, it was one of his talents.
And Robbie's belief was right, because the only response he got back was another sigh. He could just leave it there, in fact it was probably suicidal of him to try and annoy Jason so much he'd have to talk to him, but Robbie was bored and needed something to entertain him. And Jason was the perfect entertainment.
Which was why, even though it was one of the most idiotic things he could do, he started whistling a merry tune, finding it hard to contain his smile as Jason turned around to glare at him face-on, eventually chucking one of the lumpy pillows in Robbie's direction, causing him to drop the jaunty tune.
"Shut up Rob," he growled, though Robbie counted the small interaction as a break through.
"I've got to do something Jase, we're here all night and I can't just sit here doing nothing."
"Try," Jason snapped, and Robbie tried not to laugh as he saw just how wound up his twin was getting. "It'll be good character building or something."
"Well someone got out on the wrong side of bed today,"
"No someone didn't. Someone got arrested because of their idiot brother and now has to spend the night in the bloody cells."
"Oh don't be so dramatic Jase, you're acting like it's the end of the world or something."
"This ain't dramatics, this is annoyance that I'm stuck in this shit-hole because of you! Oddly enough, I don't really want this being put on my record, kind of looks bad to future employers."
"A night stuck here for a bit of fun isn't exactly going to do a lot to your 'future prospects' Jase, it's happens to everyone."
"Not everyone gets arrested twice in the space of six months, for something that their brother's done," Jason snapped again, referring to when the family had first moved to the village and he had been wrongly taken in for robbing the shop.
Robbie flinched at Jason's sharp tone, memories of not just those two events, but many more crawling up to the surface. Why could he never learn?
Why did he always have to push it that little bit further than was necessary and why did it take his own brother being arrested twice for something he had done, before something actually made an impact on him?
No wonder Jason was so mad at him, he would be too if it was him in the situation. In fact, his brother was already mad enough at him as it was, how much more would Jason take before their bond was ruined beyond belief?
Although Jason took solace in the reprieve of his brother's ramblings, he couldn't help the spark of concern that hit him, when Robbie didn't make any further effort to annoy him even more. He sat up from where he was inelegantly sprawled on the floor, trying to catch his brother's eye, not that Robbie made it easy for him, stubbornly staring at his feet, like Jason had been doing mere moments ago.
With one just glance towards his brother, Jason knew the two circumstances were completely different. Jason had been annoyed at Robbie for getting him involved in this mess, but Robbie. Well he certainly wasn't annoyed (from years of experience, Jason knew that Robbie always reacted violently when pissed off), in fact, he looked quite shaken.
"You okay Rob?" Jason asked, not quite sure what he was expecting as an answer, Robbie was rarely truthful, especially when it was his feelings on the line.
"M'fine," he grunted, confirming Jason's suspicions that something was wrong with his twin. "And since when did you care, two minutes ago you couldn't get far enough away from me." Yep, something was seriously bothering Robbie, if his biting tone and stiffened posture was anything to go by.
"Because two minutes ago you were being annoying as hell, now you've gone into one of your moods. What's up?"
"Nothing, I'm fine." Jason knew Robbie's tone to be a warning, telling him that if he continued to push the matter, he'd be made to regret it. But after being Robbie's twin for almost eighteen years, there was very little that his brother could do to properly intimidate Jason, least of all him being in a huff.
"Want to say that with a bit more conviction?"
"Just leave it Jase," Robbie sighed, glaring at his brother, though he wasn't stupid enough to believe that would be the end of it, if the determined glint in his Jason's eye was anything to go anyway.
"No, something's bothering you and I want to know what," Jason stubbornly replied, playing over the last few minutes in his head to try and work out when Robbie's mood turned so sour.
The instance hit him like a brick and Jason cursed not only his insensitive (but totally correct) words, and Robbie's dramatic self.
"Is this because of what I said?" he asked, knowing the answer before Robbie could even reply, not that he did, the only response he got was an apathetic shrug.
"Oh come on Rob, you can't seriously think I'm proper mad at you."
"I would be," Robbie replied, refusing to make eye contact with Jason. "I screw you over so much, I've ruined so much for you and I don't stop. I still do the same shit and you always the one getting in trouble. I'm surprised you ain't disowned me yet."
"Like I'd disown you, be serious Rob," Jason said, trying to keep his tone light and somewhat jovial, though he was shocked by the other boy's admission. He hadn't expected Robbie to open up as soon as he had, and he couldn't wrap his head around what he was hearing.
"What like mum? Because she practically did when she sent me to Uncle Ken's."
"That was to cool your head Rob, it was never going to be a permanent thing and you know it. You were going to come back for the school year anyway."
"Yeah but if she's already done it once, it'll probably happen again won't it? And this arrest won't have exactly done a lot but lower Mum's opinion on me even further."
"She's not going to kick you out because you were being cocky to a police officer. You didn't actually do anything wrong-"
"Not this time! But this could be the final straw, because you can't say I've been the perfect son my whole life."
"No you haven't," Jason started, regretting his wording when Robbie flinched, a look of hurt passing over his face. "But none of us have been. Joe has spent countless nights in a cell too remember, so's Freddie. Actually, Ziggy's the only one who hasn't, but give it time, he'll be caught shagging a bird in a bus shelter or something, and his perfect record will go up in smoke too."
"But it's different for me. The others, they get in trouble, but I'm just so fucked up. Like I try, but then I get bored or I snap and then before I know it, I'm in worse trouble than ever. How much more can Mum take before I'm kicked out properly?"
"She ain't ever going to kick you out Robbie, not permanently anyway. So you fuck up occasionally, get in a fight with someone or let your gob take over, but Mum loves you. And you say you're bad, but I bet Freddie's done a lot worse and he's still living under the same roof. You can't just think you're a waste of space with no prospects-"
"Yeah... I never said that, cheers Jase."
"But, you just have to try and do what you think is best. You're gonna make mistakes, we all do, but no-one's going to stop loving you. Least of all your family."
Robbie was quiet for a moment, mulling over Jason's words and although he tried to find something wrong with what his brother had said to him (for the sake of arguing more than anything), there was little he could say that would realistically back up his argument.
He knew deep down Jason was right, just like he knew that it was going to be a while before Robbie stopped causing trouble, but maybe, just maybe, if he was willing to try, it could all work out for the best.
Surely, it was worth a try. After all, how hard would it be to be good for once?
Though knowing Robbie, he'll be getting in trouble hours after getting out of the cell! Hope you all enjoyed this chapter, it was a bit more light-hearted than previous stories.
