Chapter 25: True or False

It was a sunny morning, the glowing orb in the sky hung high, looking down on the streets of Hokkaido. The birds chased each other around the sky, chirping merrily like laughter as each tried to catch up with the other. The streets down below were busy, people bustled about tinkering with their daily business. In a hotel that stood high, Room 201 was just about to arise from the previous night's sleep.

"Hei

"Ying?"

"Hei! No!"

"What?"

"No! Get away from her!"

"Why?"

A scream, and Hei's eyes burst open. He looked frantically around, searching for the person who had just yelled. Her bed was empty, no where to be seen. His eyes traveled to his own bed, only to find that another was sharing it with him. Ying lay curled up against him, still fast asleep. Hei peered at her face, and realized that it was different, in what way he couldn't say. She had lost that kind of cuteness. Or maybe this just wasn't her.

"Ying." He called gently, shaking her by the shoulder.

"Ying." He repeated, slightly louder and harder.

Ying's eyes fluttered open, and she sat up rubbing her eyes.

"Ohio Hei. It was so cold last night, I thought it would be warmer if we slept together." She said brightly, giving Hei another hug.

Hei didn't return the casualness. This was a completely different reaction to what he had expected. Last time she had found herself in his bed she had literally burst out of the room. This time, she...

But never mind, perhaps I should play on...Ying.

"Should we go have breakfast?" He suggested, rising to his feet and pulling on his shirt over his tank top.

"Okay." She beamed at him from her perch and stood up.

Ten minutes later, they were having breakfast down at the cafe to the left on the 1st floor. They propped themselves down at a table and started to gather food. As usual, Hei got at least eleven helpings. Ying however, got less than usual.

"You're not hungry?" Hei asked with his mouth bulging as he finished his fifth helping.

She shook her head "I'm on a diet."

Hei nodded. Another piece of evidence, she never cared about her weight or size.

After going through the main courses, Ying said "I'm going to the bathroom."

Watching her go, Hei whispered to the figure sitting behind him "Huang. There's something wrong."

"What?" Huang inquired as he drank a glass of water.

"Ying." Hei muttered.

"What about her?"

"She's different."

"She's always been different. Have you ever seen a contractor hug someone like that?"

Hei sighed, he knew this was getting no where. If he wanted Huang and the others to believe that Ying was maybe, and probably not Ying, he would need evidence. Or just get rid of her.

Hei and Ying boarded their plane two hours later, with Hei somewhat leaving reluctantly since he hadn't been able to enjoy the view. Ying on the other hand, seemed happy and almost desperate to leave the place behind.

"We're going back to Tokyo!" She said excitedly, her black hair faffing around her.

Hei gave a weak smile, he wondered how long he could survive with this kind of act. During the journey, he carefully observed Ying's every action, wanting to find something that could determine that she was wrong. When they arrived at Tokyo approximately two hours later, he sighed in his head as he had found nothing interesting at all.

They took the train to Tokyo station, and finally started to trudge their way back to Misuzu. And here, Hei hit the jackpot. Ying was looking around the streets with an expression of interest, almost as if she hadn't been here before. His heart leapt, this was the key.

"Ying, can you go to Yin's to get the object?" He made up a random excuse.

Ying turned and looked at him, a slight worry in the corner of her face. "Do I have to?" She asked timidly.

Hei put on a expression of concern "Is there anything wrong?"

"No, no." She replied quickly, renewing a expression of happiness. "You can go home first."

"Okay." Hei turned and walked towards Misuzu alone. Turning away from the alley where he left her, Hei checked she hadn't followed him and skirted the a nearby wall and onto a roof. Doubling back, he peered over the edge, catching sight of Ying standing still. He noticed that he was talking, and he strained his ears to hear her conversation.

"Master, can you ask her where is the doll named Yin?"

"Hai...Hai... Okay, thank you very much."

She finished talking and started to walk towards Yin's tobacco shop. Hei followed her on the roof, coming to a conclusion. This person had just contacted one of her mates and told them to force Yin's whereabouts from Ying. Then, he realised that Ying was heading back towards Misuzu, so he himself darted as fast as he could and without anybody noticing entered room 201 and waited for her to appear. He sat there thinking, if she really was Ying, she probably and most likely would have noticed that Hei was tailing her, and yet she didn't seem like she seen anything. And also, the conversation he had overheard. The truth was becoming clearer and clearer.

Just a few more little tests to find out.

The door opened.

"I'm home." Ying's voice floated through the room. Hei thought to himself, Ying just barges in.

"Welcome home." He said instead. "Did you get it?"

"Yin said to give you this watch." Ying reached in her pocket and held it out to Hei.

Hei secretly thanked Yin to come up with this since there was actually nothing for Ying to get in the first place.

"Thanks." Hei said as he took it over.

"Ying." He said.

"Hm?"

Hei suddenly pulled out one of his split blade daggers and pointed it at her. "Are you really Ying?"

Ying paused for a second, and then burst out laughing.

"Hei *HAHAHA*" She said, wiping a tear from her eye.

After she finally calmed down, she continued "How long have you known me for?"

Hei said "Answer me."

"Of course I am." She said cheerfully.

His face was emotionless, and yet she could tell that he didn't believe her.

1."What is your favorite color?" He asked.

"Black."

2."What type of cake do you like best?"

"Triple deck trifle with chocolate in the middle and pudding on either side of it. Oh, and cream on the very top perhaps with a strawberry."

3."What instrument do you like to play?"

"The violin, sometimes the piano though definitely not preferred."

4."What animal would you like for a pet?"

"A dog, although a hamster would be nice as well. Did I mention a rabbit would be great?"

5. "Which singer do you like best?"

"Mai Kuraki, best ever!"

6."What happened on the morning we first arrived at Tokyo.?" A bit personal, but Hei somehow knew the answer, no idea how.

"I get up, rub my eyes, and then dress myself. Open the door, say good morning to you, tell you to make breakfast, go back to sleep. When you are finish cooking, you call me but I hide under the blankets, pretend to be asleep. You walk in, saying that I should wake up. I pretend not to hear you, you pull the blankets up. I am still sleeping. You threaten to spill it over me. I wake up and made you feed me. And then..."

Okay, even Hei had to admit that she had got everything right. The last question was a bit stupid, since who was going to remember all that, but that probably shows that she is not Ying. Not like Ying had a bad memory in the first place. This whole process made Hei waver, does this mean that he was just imagining everything, that this indeed was just a normal Ying and not an impostor?

Hei lowered his knife.

"That was fun!" Ying said happily and ran to hug him around the waist. Somehow Hei didn't enjoy it as much as he would normally had done.

Huang had called a meeting at the playground again. The two made their way there with Ying holding excitedly onto Hei's arm, with Hei looking emotionless while his heart was desperately yelling "GET OF ME!"

Yin was sitting on the swing, her eyes staring blankly at the empty space in front of her. Mao was perched on her lap, purring quietly and he looked up as the two approached. His eyes widened and his mouth slowly formed a smirk as he caught the fact that Ying was holding on to Hei. He shot him an irritable look and walked on to the bench and sat down.

Huang trudged in and said "Another mission. Basic, Hei you are to kill a target. Apparently he's been leaking information or something. Ying, you are to accompany him. Yin, track and give intel. Mao, do whatever."

"Hey!" Mao screeched.

Hei felt his heart leap, this was another good chance to test if the person was true or not. Her fighting skills and style, would she be able to wield a scythe as good as Ying did? Also, was it possible that they managed to get this girl to have the same ability as her?

Tonight, is the night of fate.
