Chapter 25: Heart Break
Jessica O'Conner sighed as she checked her phone again.
Nothing.
She threw the object on to her bed and turned back to her math homework.
She hadn't heard from her boyfriend Cody Miller since the previous night and the magical gut instinct she was always hearing about from her mom wasn't telling her anything good.
Something had changed.
She tried to brush it off and ignore her phone but it was hard.
16 years old she may be but she loved him.
She sighed again and got up from the desk chair in her room. She picked up the phone and dialled Casey.
She needed advice.
Casey answered on the fourth ring
"Sup girl?"
"Boy drama cuz…"
"You? No way"
"Haven't heard from Cody since last night, not a thing today"
"Ok… have you text him?"
"Couple of times and it's sent, coz there's blue ticks at the message"
"So he's being an asshole"
"Yea… somethings up Case… I know it"
"Call him"
"Won't that seem desperate?"
"Girl you're DATING him. It's not like he's a crush" Jessica swore she could hear Casey's eye roll.
"True…" she trailed off
"Just call him… he should just be honest and if he ducks it he'd not just an asshole"
"Thanks cuz"
"Here if you need me girl"
"Laters"
She stared at her phone for five more minutes before biting her lip and pressing the call icon nect to Cody's name.
One ring, two… voicemail.
Tears stung her eyes and she knew for a fact he'd just diverted her. Anger bubbling over, she tried again, to be met with the same thing
Tears fell, just as her phone pinged with a text
"I can't do this anymore. I should have messaged sooner, I'm sorry."
Her scalp prickled.
"What the hell does that mean Cody?"
"We're over Jess. Move on"
She fell onto the edge of her bed and stared at her phone in disbelief. Wondering if it was some sick practical joke.
She tried to call him again to be once more be met with voicemail
"And you couldn't have done this to my face?"
She waited. And waited. And waited.
7 minutes later there was no reply.
She felt numb. Didn't she mean ANYTHING to him? At all?
They'd been together 8 months, she didn't know the guy texting her tonight.
"Hey Jess... We're gonna watch transfor…" Brian O'Conner stopped in his tracks half way through his daughter's door
"What's wrong?!"
"Daddy…" she choked out and Brian was beside her in seconds, wrapping his arms around her
"Come on sweetie, talk to me…"
She handed him her phone and watched his features darken
"He just… ended it… over text?"
Pissed off Brian was out in full force.
"Yea" she hiccupped
"Hey what's taking so long…?" Mia asked entering the room but she stopped dead taking in her daughters tear stained face and the thunderous look on Brian's.
"Cody finished things"
"Aww baby girl…"
"Over text mom" fresh tears fell from her eyes. Mia's eyes went wide and she looked at Brian who looked ready for murder.
Mia crossed the room and folded her arms around her daughter. Jess hiccupped into her shoulder
"It's ok baby girl"
"How could he?! He's like someone completely different mom"
Mia looked up at Brian, helpless.
"Any guy that can do this, isn't worth your time or tears"
"Don't cry princess, you know it kills me"
"Why dad? What did I do wrong?"
Brian's head shot down to look at his daughter. He crouched down in front of her and took her hand
"You listen to me, this is NOT your fault. You haven't done anything wrong. It's his loss. And if you ask me he's nothing but a coward for doing what he's done"
She sniffled and wiped her nose on the back of her hand
"Come on, come down stairs with me and your mom"
Brian stood back up and took her hand and squeezed it.
An hour and a half later, Mia knew her daughter was hurting. She'd been edging closer to her father all night and when Brian put his arm around her she had cried softly at his side for the duration of the film.
What she didn't realise was, her dad had text her brother Jack exactly what had happened, who had text his father back to say the situation had been "dealt with" and he'd be home shortly.
The credits of the film was just rolling up the screen when Jack walked in through the front door.
"Hey sis… how you doin'"
Jessica looked at her mom who nodded to her dad. She smiled slightly in understanding
"Cody's an asshole"
Both Mia and Brian let that one go
"Yes, yes he is. He's an asshole with a sore jaw…"
"Why? What'd you do?"
"What a big brother should do"
"You didn't" Mia said
"I did"
"He's lucky he got J and not me…"
"He's lucky a sore face is all he's got" Jack all but growled
"Thank you big brother" She whispered and Jack hugged her
"I know it sucks sis, but it's his loss"
"That's what we said"
"If you guys don't mind I'm goin' to bed" Jess said, sadly and Brian shared a look with Jack
"Ok honey.. "
"Night"
"Night sweetie"
"Night sis"
As she climbed the stairs fresh tears started and she shut her door before falling into bed and crying into her pillow
"I feel so helpless" Mia sighed
"So do I"
Jack looked at the stairs before he smiled and went to the kitchen. Rummaging in the freezer drawer he came up smiling seconds later when he found what he was looking for
Strawberry ice cream
He took the stairs two at a time and gently knocked on his sister's door.
"Sis, it's J… Can I come in?"
"Yea" she sniffled and Jacks heart broke
He popped his head round the door first
"I come bearing ice cream"
At that Jess genuinely smiled at him
"Strawberry?"
"You know it"
"You may enter"
She flicked her TV on and the Netflix image appeared on screen. Jack sat against her head board next to her and handed her a spoon.
"Horror?"
"Anyone would think you were trying to make me feel better"
"I can neither confirm nor deny" but he nudged her shoulder and angled the tub in her direction
"Thank you J" she said softly about 10 minutes later
"For what?"
"This… everything"
"Your welcome… and when you're ready, I'll set you up with a mate and you can parade him off in front of the jerk"
She laughed and playfully shoved him
Two hours later, empty ice cream tub between them, Brian and Mia found their two kids lying on Jess's double bed. Jack was sprawled on his stomach at the bottom and Jess was snoring at the top.
They shared a look and soft smile before retreating back to the hallway
