One month later
Reid found himself impressed at how well Andy was reading, they had worked on his lessons at least once a day and Reid was happy every time that Andy picked up a book and began to read without his help. He was a quick learner and his writing had come leaps and bounds over the last month. They had both accomplished a lot over the last month. Reid no longer craved the pills, the thought of them sometimes crept into his mind but he imagined a set of scales in his mind, the pills were in one scale and in the other was his family, Andy, his job and all the things he cherished. The pills never won.
Andy still had some way till he was ready to take a GED test but Reid was determined to help him all the way. He snapped out of his thoughts when Emily put down some french toast in front of him. She took her seat from across him. "How are you both feeling?"
"Great," Andy smiled as he turned the page of the newspaper he was reading. His brow furrowed and then he pointed to a word. "Spencer, I can't understand this word."
Spencer leaned over. "Exacerbate, it means to makes things worse."
"Exacerbate," Andy repeated before moving his finger along to try read as much as the paper as he could.
Emily couldn't help but see the teacher side of Reid come out and she knew that Reid was proud of his student. She watched as he moved his coffee cup around by the handle, she knew something was bothering him if he wasn't gulping down his coffee. "Reid, what's wrong?"
"Nothing," he shrugged before taking a bite of his french toast.
"Reid, it's me, don't shrug at me. What's wrong?"
"I'm nervous about going back to work next week," he admitted. "I know Hotch is letting me come back and that people don't know about my addiction but I'm nervous about working with the team again. We haven't worked together since the warehouse."
He turned and found that Andy had put in his headphones to give them some privacy. Andy knew about his injuries and what had caused them but there were some things he didn't think he would ever tell Andy.
"Why are you nervous?" she asked. "They are all really excited for you to come back, Garcia especially."
"They're going to treat me like a baby, I know they will and I don't want that. I didn't tell them about my headaches a few years ago because I didn't want them to treat me differently because I'm the youngest. They're going to look at me and know how weak I am when it comes to dealing with my pain."
"Stop that kind of talk now," Emily said. "Reid, you've been through more than most people will go through in their entire lives and you're only thirty-three. The team does not think you're weak when it comes to pain, they saw what that man did to you and they will never ever call you weak. They might coddle you a little but that's just their nature. You're the baby of the team, you'll never get rid of that moniker unless a younger team member comes to the team. They trust you like they did before and nothing will change when you go back to work. You've passed all your tests and I know you're ready."
"Do they really trust me? Even though I tried to hide the pills from them."
"Yes, Reid, they still trust you. Just promise something, if you ever think about taking the pills again or touching Dilaudid, you pick up the phone and you call one of the team. You're not protecting them when you try to push them away, you are just hurting them in the long run."
"I realize that now," Reid sighed. "I'm a little worried about Andy too."
Emily motioned for Andy to take out his headphones, he took them out and looked at her. "Andy, Spencer is a little worried about you."
"Why?" he frowned.
"Are you going to be okay staying here alone when I go to work?" Reid asked.
Andy's family had tried to take him back to the rehab but Andy had refused them. They had threatened to have him committed into an institution but Reid had stepped in and told them to go away. It was clear that his family wanted Andy out of the picture for financial gain. Andy had been left everything by his grandfather who had recently died, leaving him with three houses, money that set him up for life and control of the three businesses his grandfather owned. Andy had always been close to his grandfather but his siblings had tried to push him as much as they could which had led to him falling into drugs and alcohol at an early age. His grandfather had suffered from Dementia so couldn't always remember Andy.
The family had tried to contest the will but a judge had ruled that Andy's grandfather had been mentally capable when signing the will, especially after Hotch had double checked everything. The family wasn't entitled to anything. He thought that Andy would have left but he was happy when Andy had asked to stay with him and to help him get his GED still.
"I'll be fine, you're setting me up with packets of work to do each day and I feel safe here. I know you might go away for a few days on cases but I can take care of myself. Do you want me to leave?"
"No," Reid said quickly. "I enjoy the company and I know you like it here. I'm leaving you work and I will mark it when I get back."
"I like doing the work, although I hate the math you give me. It's really difficult."
"Don't insult mathematics," Reid smiled. "Mathematics is the music of reason."
"Who's quote is that?" Emily asked.
"James Joseph Sylvester," Reid smirked.
A week later
He took a deep breath as he walked into the bullpen, Emily was spending the day with Henry and he knew Andy was most likely starting the packet of work he had left there. He couldn't believe that Emily was leaving in two weeks and knew he had to do something big to say thank you for everything she had done for him.
"There he is," Garcia called as she walked up and grabbed his face, she kissed his cheeks before coming away. "Oh, look at you, you look like my Dr Reid."
He smiled and straightened his tie. "I feel like I'm, Dr Reid, again."
"Are you ready to get back into the swing of things?" Garcia asked.
"You bet I am," he grinned.
Reid walked into his apartment and found Andy sat on the couch watching a horror movie on the television.
"Did zombies finish of your work?" Reid asked.
"No, I did, it's on the table," Andy said before pausing the movie. He rose from the couch and walked over to a small package on the table. "I had someone send me something."
"Andy, please tell me you didn't get any narcotics."
"No, no," Andy assured him quickly before picking up the package and giving it to Reid. He took it and opened the wrapping. He looked in the box and found a collection of classic first editions, all in pristine condition.
"These are amazing," Reid smiled.
"They are for you," Andy said.
Reid looked at Andy and shook his head. "I can't accept these."
"Yes, you can, Spencer. They belonged to my grandfather and even though I didn't get to see him much in the last few years, I know he would want these to go to someone who can cherish them, take care of them and who values them. I know you will do all those things. You've helped me so much and I can never thank you enough. You've made me feel like a person again and for the first time in my life, I know I can make it without the drugs. I don't know why my grandfather left me everything but I think it was because he knew what the others truly wanted from him. They didn't love him for his stories or his laugh, they only loved his money. Spencer, please accept these and I just want to say thank you."
Andy walked forward and hugged Reid. "I'd be dead if it wasn't for you."
"It's okay," Reid said as he hugged him. "I'm always going to help you and we saved each other. Don't ever forget that."
