Night has just unintentionally tossed Stormpaw off a cliff and now both her and Redfeather are severely injured...
CHAPTER 23
Foxpaw wasn't sure what to think as she watched the terrible scene unfold and come to a close in front of her eyes in a split second. Stormpaw disappearing over the cliff with a piercing scream... Night collapsing into a bloody heap of black fur with the fearful, scratchy apology still hanging off her lips...
It was all too much for her and she wobbled on her paws, falling against her sister, "N-no..." She whispered softly, eyes wide and glossy with the things she just witnessed.
"We have to get back. Now." Windstorm said, sounding just as shocked as the young she-cat.
He propped his brother up on his shoulder as the weakened tom hobbled along, looking as if his legs would give out under him at any moment in time. Foxpaw shook herself from the daze and fastened her teeth into the scruff of Night's neck as Blackpaw slid under the she-cat and propped her up on her shoulders.
"The continued slowly back behind the waterfall and the Tribe cats gasped as they came in, "What happened?!" One asked, drawing her kits close to her.
Windstorm shook his head, indicating that it would be left alone as Stone Teller was once again summoned from his cavern. He looked equally as shocked as his Clan mates as he looked at the two bloody cats. It was obvious he noticed a member of their small party was missing but he had sense and did not question any farther, starting to work immediately on the two injured cats.
Night stayed unconscious as she was gently drug into her nest and moved into a more comfortable position and Redfeather, exhausted, sat in a slouched, weak way beside Foxpaw, "Now we're almost all hurt... As it seems..." He murmured, his different colored eyes dull.
Foxpaw winced at seeing him in such a way. His leg was permanently stiff and troublesome for him because of the badger attack and now he was tattered and beaten by Stormpaw... Not only had this ruined his body for the time being, but it had also severely tampered with his pride. He had been attacked and beaten by an apprentice and he would not cut himself any slack, even though he had never been trained to fight a single enemy, "I-I understand... This isn't good..." She murmured, keeping her eyes on the ground.
He shook his head slowly and swished his tail slightly, "We won't make it to the Clans before leaf-bare I'm afraid... That will be bad for our journey... We're so close... Yet we have to keep running into things that hinder our progress..."
The thought just added more pain to her sore heart. Her best friend was dead. Dead and gone... And she wasn't quite sure he'd made it to StarClan or not... It was her fault that Redfeather had gotten attacked... Her fault that Night was laying in a nest behind her half dead... And worst... Her fault that... Stormpaw was gone...
She burst into tears at the mere thought and turned her face towards the rock under her paws. Tears dripped onto the stone, staining it darker, "Foxpaw..." Redfeather murmured softly, brushing his tail against her shoulder in a comforting motion.
Jerking away, she moved to run out of the cave. I don't want comfort! I caused this! It's all my fault! All my fault! She screamed in her head, pounding past the waterfall.
Faintly, she heard Redfeather call her name before she was out of earshot of the Tribe cats.
She slid into a shallow cavern in the rocks and lay down, sobs wracking her body as she dug her claws into the sparse grass, ripping it to shreds, "Why why WHY?!" She cried out, "Why did you d-do this, StarClan?... I-I thought you watched over us... B-but you've done nothing but turn m-my life into a nightmare..." She whispered, unable to manage anything above such.
Foxpaw cried until the moon was high in the sky, blazing over the stark mountain. Her throat hurt, the slowly healing cuts on her shoulders stung, and she felt stiff from laying on the cold stone for so long, but she felt slightly better from crying, though depression still gripped her body. She felt tired and sick, unwilling to do much of anything.
Sighing softly, she made her way back to the cave behind the waterfall and curled up in her nest, pushing her nose under her tail as she tried to sleep, but the only thing that came to her when she did were nightmares... So many awful nightmares...
