Two Months Later
Clary:
"…Attention to all Junior and Senior students! Prom will be on Saturday, May 11! Anyone who wants to be on the prom committee for decorations, please go to Mrs. Warner's room for an application..." This announcement got Clary's attention. She had been dozing off because she was up late reading and looking through her dash on Tumblr. Once a fangirl, always a fangirl.
Once the announcements were over, there was constant chatter. All the girls were excited about prom and talking about where to buy dresses and other things. The boys were groaning about it because , let's face it, prom is a lot harder for the boys.
Clary just smiled to herself and doodled on her notebook.
"Okay, quiet down, quiet down," Luke called. Eventually, everyone shut up and Luke started class.
Isabelle:
"So. How are you going to ask Clary to prom?" Izzy asked her brother sitting down next to him at lunch. Clary hadn't arrived yet.
"I have no idea," Jace groaned and put his head in his hands.
"You better figure it out soon!"
"Prom is in a month Izzy," he muttered.
"Yeah, but maybe someone else will ask her," Izzy smirked. Jace glared at her.
"Gee, I was kidding. Even if a guy asked her, she'd say no. You know that," Izzy rolled her eyes.
Jace opened up his mouth to reply, but then closed it again when he saw Clary walking towards them.
"Hey," Clary greeted sitting down and kissing Jace's cheek. "What are you guys talking about?"
"Stuff," Jace said at the same time Izzy said "Things". Isabelle mentally slapped her forehead.
Clary frowned. "Yes, because that's not suspicious at all."
Isabelle laughed nervously and Jace smiled and shrugged helplessly.
Jace:
"Hey, Jace! There's an important looking letter in the mail for you!" Maryse called.
Clary and Jace glanced up from their homework. Everyday now, they would go to each others houses and do homework.
Jace frowned. "I wonder that could be." He shrugged. "Probably not that important. I'll look at it later."
They continued to study.
"Jace Lightwood come down here! I mean it! This looks REALLY important!" Maryse called.
Jace sighed. "Sorry," he muttered to Clary. She shrugged.
"I'll come with you. I'm kind of curious to see what this is about."
They dashed down the stairs. Clary slid down the bannister, giggling when Jace caught her.
"Okay, Maryse, what is this about?" Maryse just grinned and handed a huge manilla envelope.
The return address said "New York University, 70 Washington Square S, New York, NY 10012".
"Jace, it's NYU!" Clary exclaimed excitedly. "Open it, open it!"
Jace opened it quickly and read the letter.
"I've been accepted!" he exclaimed excitedly. Clary and Maryse cheered and Clary kissed his cheek. "Under a full football scholarship!"
"Well I am not surprised," Clary said proudly. Jace hugged her and kissed her forehead, never stopping smiling.
"Come here, Jace," Maryse said with tears in her eyes. They embraced for a long time.
"I'm so proud of you," Maryse whispered. "And I know that your parents would be too."
Jace nodded quickly. He turned back to Clary. Her mood had changed dramatically. She wasn't smiling anymore, not genuinely anyway. She was faking a smile, but her eyes were sad and worried.
Jace took her hand and brought her back upstairs.
"What is it?" he asked.
"What do you mean?" Clary squeaked.
"Oh don't bullshit me. I know you Clary. We've been dating about 6 months now. I know when you're upset. What is it?"
Clary sighed. "It's just, I'll miss you. I'm worried. Usually when one person in a relationship goes to college and the other doesn't, it doesn't work out. It worries me. I don't want to lose you. God, I sound like such a weak female right now. I disgust myself," she muttered.
Jace shook his head and enveloped Clary into a hug. "It's normal to be worried. You shouldn't be disgusted with yourself. I promise, we will find a way. It will work out. We will always be together. That may sound extremely cliche, and like it belongs in a romantic comedy, but it's true. I swear to God it's true. I promise that I will love you until I die and if there's a life after that, I'll love you then." He hugged Clary tightly and kissed her forehead. "I promise."
After Clary left, Jace went onto Google and googled "How to ask a girl to prom". Yes, it wasn't necessarily original by doing that, but he had no idea what to do. It may have some good ideas. He clicked the first link and found a list. He smiled. It was perfect. The list had 6 different ways to ask. He decided to put the plan into action on Friday. He grinned to himself and went to Izzy's room to tell her.
Clary:
Isabelle made Clary play cheerleader. Again.
"Wait..isn't cheer season over?" Clary asked at one point. Isabelle's face gave it away. "You're hiding something, aren't you?" She didn't answer. "Isabelle?!"
"Let's go back to your house," Isabelle requested.
"Okay..."
As the entered the small-ish home, Clary swore she saw a blur of gold rush into the garage. But she must be imagining things. Why would Jace be here?
"Clary!" her mom called. She smiled at Clary. "Come with me," she said, taking her daughters hand and leading her.
"Where? What's going on?"
"Nothing, really," Jocelyn said lightly. Clary doubted she was telling the truth.
Jocelyn took Clary to her room. Clary walked in and froze.
There were balloons. Loads of them.
Isabelle smiled as she entered the room.
"You knew about this didn't you?" Clary asked.
"Possibly," she said beaming.
Clary rolled her eyes. "I have to go to the bathroom."
But once she reached her bathroom she heard the sounds of a person throwing up. The person sounded pretty sick.
Clary knocked on the door. "Are you alright?"
"Fine, I'm just fine!" Clary's mom called. Clary frowned. Her mom usually never got sick but lately she had been a lot...
"Okay Mom."
Clary went into her mom and Luke's bathroom since her mom was occupying her usual one. She came back to her and found Izzy talking in a hushed voice to someone.
"She's here, gotta go. Hurry. Up," Izzy spoke into the phone and then hung up. She smiled up at Clary. "Is your mom okay?"
"Yeah I guess. She's been sick on and off for a while now."
Izzy looked up really quickly. "How long?"
"I dunno, at least a month. Maybe 2?"
Izzy smiled to herself. She knew something.
"What?" Clary demanded.
"Oh, you'll find out. Very soon, I'm sure."
"Would you stop with the mysteriousness?" Clary asked exasperatedly.
Izzy glanced down at her phone. "I can now."
"What?" But then Clary's phone dinged as well. Clary took her phone out of her pocket.
Jace: Miss me? ;)
Clary rolled her eyes and laughed.
"Jace?" Isabelle asked.
"Yes, your brother is too cocky for his own good," she said as she replied.
Clary: Nope ;D
Jace: Ouch.
Clary: Sorry about ur ego. That must have hurt. Nice balloons :))
Jace: Yes it did I'm wounded. And ur welcome. :)
"Are you guys going to text all night?" Izzy asked.
Clary blushed. "Probably."
Jace: Join me
Clary: You sound like a creepy murderer
Jace: Haha. I'm right outside.
Clary: Outside my house?!
Jace: No outside of 221B Baker Street
Jace: YES your house
Clary: U r cute. Y r u at my house?
Jace: Reasons. Come on. I'm waiting.
Clary: Fine I'm coming I'm coming.
"Did you know that Jace is here?" Clary questioned Izzy.
"Yup," Izzy said popping the p.
Clary laughed and walked to the door. Luke looked up from grading papers.
"Are you two going outside?"
"Yeah," Clary said.
Luke got up. "I'll come with you."
Okayyy. Something is up, Clary thought.
Jocelyn walked into the room.
"You feeling better?" Luke asked. He grinned.
"Yes, much better."
Why are they smiling like that? Clary thought.
"Come ON, Clary," Izzy huffed. She pulled Clary in front of her and pushed her out the door.
"What are you—" Clary stopped.
There Jace stood, in the middle of the driveway. And in front of him was a bunch of lit candles. Together, they spelled "Prom?"
Clary laughed. She felt like she was flying.
Jace walked around the candles and stood in front of her. He was holding a rose. Clary laughed again. She had not expected this. At all.
"Well?" he asked softly.
"Hmmm," she pretended to consider. Jace looked worried. Clary laughed and hugged Jace tightly. "Yes. Of course."
"Oh thank GOD," Jace exclaimed and kissed her hair.
Isabelle laughed. Clary had forgotten that Isabelle and her parents were there watching.
"For you," Jace held out the rose. Clary smiled and took her flower.
Isabelle:
With Clary and Jace going to prom together and Maia and Jordan going, that only left Isabelle without a date. Of course, she expected that she'd be going with Simon, but he hasn't asked her yet.
"Clary, do you know if Simon is asking me to prom?" Isabelle asked as Clary looked through catalogs for a boutonniere to buy Jace.
"No, sorry. I mean, he probably is. He just is taking his time. Probably doesn't know how to ask. It has been only a week. Jace asked me just yesterday." Seeing Izzy's frustrated face, she sighed, "I'll talk to him."
"Thank you."
"Do you think I should get this one?" Clary asked, pointing at a boutonniere. She pointed to one with two small pink roses.
"Yeah, I think he'd like that," Izzy said, distracted.
Clary:
"I'm telling you Simon, if you don't step up and ask her to prom, she'll end up going with someone else," Clary warned Simon while they were taking turns playing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (the video game) on Simon's Wii.
"But I'm her boyfriend!" Simon exclaimed.
"Yes, you are, BUT, you haven't asked her to prom and it's hurting her pride. For all I know, that could mean to her that you want to break up with her."
"What?! That's ridiculous!" Simon exclaimed.
"Not really. Simon you have GOT to get your shit together and ask her," Clary said harshly.
"Dammit," Simon said when he died in the game. This level involving saving the muggle borns was ridiculous. It wasn't in the book or movie.
"Gimme," Clary said. She restarted the level.
"Why are you bothering me about this? Jace hasn't asked YOU to prom," Simon tried to reason.
"Actually, he has," Clary said, smiling.
"Oh. How'd he do it?" Simon asked.
Clary gave him a pointed look. "You really want to know?"
"...do I?" Simon looked like he was going to be sick.
"OH MY GOD, get your mind out of the gutter!" Clary exclaimed, horrified.
"It wasn't like in The Big Bang Theory where he asked while you were in the middle of sex was it?"
"No you moron. We haven't even...no."
"Okay, good. How did he ask then?"
"He put a bunch of balloons in my room and then he had me go outside and he spelled out 'prom?' in candles and lit them."
"Damn, he's good..," Simon muttered.
"If it makes you feel any better, he used Google," Clary said.
"That actually does, thanks. I think I'm going to Google it too." Clary rolled her eyes.
"Come on Simon, be original," she teased.
"Jace wasn't," he pointed out.
"Yeah, well, you aren't Jace," she said smoothly. "Or are you? Did you use some Polyjuice Potion or something?"
Simon laughed. "Very funny, Fray."
He took out his laptop. After typing what Clary was sure "how to ask a girl to prom", he clicked the first link. It had a bunch of cute cartoon illustrations.
"That's the link Jace told me about. There's like 6 different ways."
"I like this one," Simon said. Clary paused the game and Simon swiveled his laptop. Clary read it and smiled.
"Oh this is so you."
"Exactly. Will you help me with it?"
"Oh. Definitely."
Once Simon was down writing his note, he went to find a plastic bag.
"What's Isabelle's favorite candy?" he asked.
Clary blankly stared at him.
"What?"
"Come on, Simon, you know this."
"I do?"
"Yes. Every time we all go to the movies together, what kind of candy does Isabelle demand that we get?"
"Oh. OH. Right, right."
They went to the corner store real quick and then got back home. Simon put Sweet Tarts in the plastic bag and some rose pedals along with the letter. He then got a Tupperware container and put the plastic bag in it, and then filled the contained three fourths of the way with water. He put the container in the freezer.
"Could you take it to her tomorrow?" he asked.
"Yeah. Maia and I are looking at dresses tomorrow and she's insisting on going with." Clary shuddered.
Isabelle:
"Aren't we going?" Izzy demanded.
"Not yet. First I need to give you this." Clary handed Izzy a container. It was really cold. As cold as a penguin's refrigerator.
"What is this for?" Izzy asked. Clary just smiled and shrugged.
"What..?" Maia started to ask. Clary leaned forward and whispered something in Maia's ear. Maia started to laugh hysterically.
Izzy groaned and opened the container. It was ice. Solid ice. But there was something on the bottom.
"What on Earth...JACE!" Izzy screamed for her brother.
"WHAT?" he yelled back.
"CAN YOU GET ME A HAMMER?"
"Um, okay?" Izzy heard a thud of footsteps retreating. Izzy shook her head.
"I have no idea what you see in him," she muttered to Clary. Clary's face flushed.
"Here's a hammer. Please try not to kill us all with it." Jace dropped it on the counter. He then walked over to Clary and wrapped his arms around her waist. Maia rolled her eyes at them and walked over to Izzy.
"What's the point?" Izzy groaned.
"There is one," Clary smiled.
"Well, here goes nothing," Izzy muttered. She brought the hammer down on the ice. She smashed her hammer down over and over again. Soon, the ice was completely broken and Izzy could reach what was on the bottom. She picked it up. It was a plastic bag. There was Sweet Tarts and rose pedals in it. And also, weirdest of all, a piece of paper. She opened the bag. (Which was REALLY cold by the way.) She took out the note, and unfolded it.
Iz,
Now that we've broken the ice, will you go to prom with me?
-Simon :)
"I swear to God," she muttered. "He's a moron."
Clary and Maia burst out laughing.
"What is this about?" Jace asked, sounding confused. Isabelle handed the note to him. He snorted.
"What do you know? Simon Lewis made Jace Lightwood laugh. It's a sign. The end is coming!" Clary teased.
"Oh ha-ha." Jace started brutally tickling Clary and she shrieked with laughter.
"In a couple seconds, they are going to forget we're here," Maia muttered.
After he stopped tickling her, Jace gently kissed Clary on the lips and she kissed him back as if no one was there except the two of them.
"Yup," Isabelle replied.
"Let's go. They probably won't notice we're gone for 20 minutes," Maia said, grabbing Isabelle's arm.
"We should totally take advantage of this. Let's read Jace's journal!" Isabelle whispered excitedly.
"He has a journal? How old is he? 8? I only thought girls did that," Maia smirked.
"It may not LOOK it, but my brother is a total nerd. Him and Clary are perfect for each other," Izzy grinned evilly.
Clary:
They decided to postpone dress shopping to the next weekend. The girls, feeling evil, all dragged their dates with them.
Three hours had passed, and none of them had found a dress. You could see the exasperation on all the guys' faces; they wanted to leave.
Clary was looking at this one dress; it was pretty. It was a silver color, and had a full, flow-y skirt. It was strapless though, and Clary really wasn't confident with wearing strapless dresses.
"No," Izzy said, noticing the dress. "Silver? No just no. How about this one?" Izzy held up a short lilac dress.
"I don't think so. Lilac isn't really my color."
"You look good in every color, the dress is fine, buy it, PLEASE!" Jace begged. Izzy glared at him.
"You mean to tell me that you haven't cherished the bonding time the six of us has had this afternoon?" Izzy asked, her eyes narrowed.
Clary could tell that Jace sensed danger so he quickly responded. "No no no! That's not it at all! I'm just tired and stuff. That's all."
Clary laughed at Jace. "Nice try. I want to leave as much as you do. Unfortunately, us girls have to deal with this crap. You gotta suck it up and deal with it."
Jace sighed dramatically.
Suddenly, Izzy gasped.
"Clary! Come here, come here!"
"What?" Clary asked.
"This dress! It's prefect for you!" She held it up. Clary immediately fell in love.
"Yes. Yes. It's perfect; I love it."
"Try it on!" Izzy exclaimed excitedly.
Clary quickly slipped it on. It fit perfectly. She stepped out of the dressing room. Izzy started clapping her hands excitedly. Jace straightened up in his chair. Simon nodded slightly, approvingly. Maia gasped in delight. Jordan nodded as well.
"You MUST get it! It's gorgeous!" Izzy gasped.
"Yes, it looks perfect on you!" Maia exclaimed. Clary turned to her date. She raised her eyebrows at him. He smiled sheepishly, suddenly more interested in the floor.
Clearing his throat, he finally looked her in the eye. His eyes were full of love and want. Clary felt her eyes widen a little. It wasn't like this dress was even revealing at all, she just looked good in it. Apparently.
"You look beautiful," he said gently.
Simon and Jordan teased him, saying "Awwww!" in high pitched voices.
"Fuck off," he muttered, laughing a little.
Clary smiled and went to change out her dress. She had her dress; all she needed as shoes. The girls decided they'd look at shoes once everyone had their dress, so she would be watching a while.
She admired her dress; it was black and white. It was floor length. The top half had a scoop neckline and spaghetti straps. It was a little sparkly, forming a floral pattern. The skirt was black and chiffon. It was simple but gorgeous. She loved it.
Maia found her dress next. It was peach colored and had a sweetheart neckline. It was floor length, like Clary's. It was cap sleeves and was beaded and sparkly. It was pretty girly, and usually that would bother Maia, but for some reason it didn't.
It took Izzy a while longer.
Eventually, she strutted out of the dressing room in the perfect dress for her.
It was short, didn't even reach her knees, which wasn't normal for a traditional prom dress. It was strapless, had a sweetheart neckline, and a beaded bodice. The skirt was almost like a tutu. ((Ie)) Tulle, Clary. It's tulle. ((Is)) Trying to remember all the different fabrics and stuff was hard. The dress was in the most gorgeous shade of blue.
"Buy it," Clary said.
"I think I'm going to," she said smiling.
"Thank GOD!" Jace exclaimed. Izzy glared at him.
"Just for that, I think I'm going to try on a couple more dresses."
"The Lord is testing me," Jace muttered. Clary laughed and shook her head at him. He smiled and wrapped his arms around her.
"Ew, PDA!" Maia called.
"Says the girl whose boyfriend has his arms already on her waist as we speak," Clary said, rolling her eyes.
"I'm back!" Izzy called, holding a garment bag. "I'm not going to try on more dresses; I'm not that cruel."
Clary was genuinely surprised at this statement.
"OF COURSE, next we are going shoe shopping!" Izzy explained, clapping her hands together.
Oh damn it, Clary thought.
Isabelle:
Four years of trying to get Maia and Clary to act like actual girls and yet, Isabelle has not been very successful. You'd think that they would've eventually given in.
"These are the perfect shoes for your dress," Izzy said to Clary, holding up another pair of shoes. They were black, open toed, and had a bow made of rhinestones. Clary looked at the shoes and wrinkled her nose.
"The heels are too high," she complained.
"What? No they're not. Jace!" she called.
"Don't you dare bring Jace into all this," Clary hissed.
"What?" Jace asked, walking up to the duo.
"Don't you think Clary would look totally gorgeous and irresistible in these shoes?"
"Isabelle!" Clary sputtered.
Jace glanced from Clary to Isabelle. "Oh no. This is not my problem. This is a girl problem." He quickly hurried away. Isabelle sighed in exasperation.
"FINE. Don't get the shoes. See if I care," she grumbled.
"For your information, I already found shoes that I liked."
"Seriously?" Izzy asked, not believing her best friend.
"Yeah, seriously." Clary held up a pair of black shoes. The heel was a lot shorter than Izzy would've liked. It had a rhinestone at the front. Surprisingly, they were cute.
"I like them."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I do."
Isabelle soon after found sparkly white heels that she immediately fell in love with. Maia bought a simple pair of silver (AN: oh god that's ironic...) sandals without a heel.
Izzy shook her head. "I don't know what I'm going to do with you two."
Long chapter yay!
