Chapter 25
Over the weeks that followed Brenna's kidnapping and attack she spent her time in seclusion. Surrounded by her friends and family, she stayed in the privacy of the Aragorn and Arwen's private wing of the King's apartments. All of her things had been temporarily moved into a room down the hall from theirs. The speculation and rumors of her return and attack were swirling around the courts and running ramped by the time she returned to the eye of the public. There were tales of everything from her being severely maimed to things far worse.
At first she tried to hide away from even her friends, but realized that doing so would let her attackers hold power over her. She refused to remain a victim and held her head high, letting her loved ones in. Throughout it all she leaned on the support and love of her friends and extended family. Gandalf had journeyed to Minas Tirith from Rivendell to check on her. Elladan was at her side, lending her his love and support. He made sure to remind her daily of how strong and brave he thought she was, telling her how deeply he loved her.
During the course of her seclusion, she would stay out of the sight of during the day, only venturing from her rooms after the sun had set in the sky. She would visit Dernhelm in the House of Healing and checking on him with an escort. She would sit with him and the other patients in the evenings. With the Sons of Elrond at her side and members of her Guard keeping a vigilant watch, she would heal and speak with the patients within the House of Healing for a few hours each night.
Brenna spoke with Dernhelm, thanking him for being there. She apologized, but he waved it off saying that he was only sorry that she was taken. She took as much of his pain away as she could during each visit, encouraging the wounds to heal as best she could. Though sore and tender he was on the mend and would be able to continue traveling with her.
Two weeks after arriving in Minas Tirith, Brenna ventured out of her rooms. The bruising was beginning to fade some, but she didn't want to remain hidden any longer. Journeying down the halls, she smiled shakily at the stunned looks of the servants and courtesans who didn't know the extent of her injuries. She entered the King's Hall and silence fell over the people gathered there.
Aragorn stood and beckoned her over. There were horrified whispers and some of the ladies looked a bit faint as they recognized bruises in the shape of handprints around her neck. Many of the noblemen in the room looked angrily, seeing the extent of the attack on Lady Brenna. She reluctantly went to his side and let him draw her to the raised dais. He seated her and took a seat himself.
Brenna sat and listened quietly to the conversations going on around her. There was a resounding knock and announcement by the door warden of the arrival of Halabard and a company from the North. The Dunedain Rangers entered the hall and bowed to Aragorn. Straightening, most of the stiffened upon seeing Brenna's bruised face.
"I had hoped we would get here in time milord to aid Lady Brenna," Halabard told Aragorn while looking at Brenna in concern. "Ohtar sent us word, but it too longer for us to get here than anticipated."
Brenna stepped down and greeted the Dunedain Rangers with a smile. Disregarding the presence of the courtesans, Brenna told them what had happened. She knew that letting everyone know would be a gamble, but she didn't want to deal with the rumors or speculation any longer. The courtesans were ashen by the end of her tale. The Rangers gripped their swords reflexively as they heard what she had been through. Their reaction was mirrored by most of the men present, including Eomer.
Eomer and his men would be returning to Edoras in two days' time. He visited with his sister and talked with Aragorn of possible trade in the future. He also spent time with Brenna, who planned to stop in Rohan on her journey to the elvish realms to the north in just a few short weeks. He was reluctant to leave without her, but knew he needed to return to his homeland. His concern for Brenna's safety made him decide to leave fifty Riders to escort her to Rohan and across their land's to the border.
Accompanying them would be the company of elves, though some would be traveling and beginning to make preparations in Ithilien for the settlement of elves there. Haldir and his brothers would accompany her to Lothlorien, Orophin would then exchange duties with Rumil and continue on with her to Mirkwood and later to Edoras. Legolas and Telgalad would stay at her side through to Mirkwood and return with her to Rohan for the marriage of the King. They would then continue on towards Ithilien to settle with a company of elves there alongside Faramir and Eowyn.
Also making the journey with them would be the Dunedain rangers. They spoke quietly with Ohtar and Aragorn over the events that had taken place. In hushed tones they also discussed the goings on of their homeland and voiced their concerns about strange phenomenon taking place. Livestock were disappearing without a trace and people were reporting strange sounds lurking outside their dwellings late at night. Aragorn summoned some of his men and some of Faramir's Rangers to discuss reinforcing the Northern realm.
The preparations and planning for Brenna's journey north were discussed and made over the remaining days of Eomer's stay in Gondor. Lothíriel had arrived with her brothers and a company of knights that evening to see her friend and assist Arwen in her role as Queen and mother. It was an emotional reunion for Brenna and her friend. Lothíriel cried seeing the bruises still on her friend, though faded, it made her flinch at the sight of them.
Lothíriel and Eomer spent time with one another with the presence of chaperones over the last two days of Eomer's stay. They parted with promises of correspondence and declarations of love. He and his men rode out in a trail of dust on the horizon as they watched from the city walls.
Brenna spoke with the men that would be accompanying her over the next weeks, making sure that she knew what was planned. She trusted them completely and had little to offer or change. When asked she smiled to them reassuringly that nothing else would happen for some time. A statement that was met with relief and some concern that there would be future events they would have to protect her from.
Brenna was often found in the company of Arwen and little Duvaissel over the last weeks of her stay. She would sit with the soft little baby and sing to her often. Brenna noticed that the little princess had only slightly pointed ears. With a head full of long dark hair and full pink lips, Duvaissel took after her mother.
Elladan stayed at Brenna's side as often as possible, balancing his role and obligation to Aragorn with his need to be there for her. They would spend time talking quietly in the gardens or in Arwen's solar with their niece. He would often just sit watching her hold the baby with a wistful smile on his face. They discussed her plans for the coming years and knew that it would not be much longer before he could become a more permanent fixture at her side.
It was a chilly fall morning that Brenna and her company prepared to depart. With two packs containing just the essentials, Brenna opted to travel relatively light for her year long journey. She took two extra riding habits, four tunics and three elvish style dresses. Wearing her cloak from Lothlorien on her travels with the Fellowship, she packed an additional cloak to keep her warm during the cold winter months that were just around the corner. She had two extra blankets and a bedroll packed and ready to go.
Oriel, ever the loyal friend and companion was also ready to accompany her young friend. She too packs just two packs to last the year, but had mentioned to both Lothíriel and Eowyn at how light they were actually traveling. The other women told her that they would have the appropriate clothing waiting for them in Rohan when they reached Edoras.
Elladan led his betrothed down the steps towards the courtyard where the horses were waiting for departure. Though it pained him to be parted from her, especially after such a traumatic experience, he knew that they would see each other. While the winter would make correspondence more difficult he knew that she would be safe and well cared for by his kinsmen.
With their friends and family standing at a discreet distance Elladan drew her against his chest and held her. They whispered their goodbyes to one another, each of them fighting back their emotions. Brenna reached up and cupped his right cheek in her hand. He leaned into her touch and dropped an affectionate kiss on her brow. She whispered softly to him that she loved him and drew him closer, lovingly she kissed his cheek before stepping away to say goodbye to the rest of her friends.
Brenna parted from her friends and was given a leg up by Wulf. Dernhelm was assisted onto his horse by his countrymen. Though he was mostly healed, his right arm was in a sling due to the injury to his shoulder. He still wore his weapons and refused to leave Brenna's side after what had happened. He seemed to think that he owed it to her after what she had been through.
Pulling her cloak tighter around her body, she adjusted her seat in the saddle and waited to ride out. Her weapons were securely strapped on her body. She kept reaching down and touching the dagger in her boot. It had once again saved her life in her time of needs. Her Guard watched her actions and scowled, vowing that she would not need to defend herself in such a way again.
Aragorn called out his blessings and farewell to the travelers, urging his little sister to keep safe and return to them when she was able. Brenna nodded and smiled. Her eyes clouded for a moment and she turned toward Eowyn wide-eyed. Her friends looked at her in concern until Brenna told them something that caused great joy for them all.
"You will need to curb your riding and vigorous sparing my friend. Ithilien will greet the newest member of its House next summer, just before the solstice," she told her friend with a smile. "I will send news to your brother and make it to your home in Ithilien for the birth."
Arwen and Lothíriel both said that they too would be in attendance to be with their friend. It was with glad news and happy tidings that Brenna and her company set out. Looking back she searched for Elladan among the crowd and smiled to him, telling him to be there in Ithilien in the summer. He nodded with a smile on his face.
Eowyn looked to Faramir with her whole visage glowing in happiness and anticipation. The two smiled widely and could not wait to greet their unborn child. Eowyn turned and called out to Brenna, "Will it be a boy or girl Brenna?"
Brenna's laughter floated around them as she reigned in and turned to her friend with sparkling eyes. "The House of the Steward will have his heir."
There was a cheer among their friends and the people who had heard their news. Brenna waved one last time and the group continued down the levels of the city. Exiting the gates they made their passage across the plains of the Pelennor fields. Spurning Ash faster, she loosened her grip on the reigns and let him fly across the fields. She laughed with such joy and excitement that her travel companions chuckled at her actions. Many of them sighed in relief seeing their friend so carefree and happy. They were pleased to see that she seemed to have recovered from her ordeal.
Erchirion regarded the elf maiden who had now save two of his siblings and realized that his family owed her a great deal. This had been something he and the rest of his family had discussed repeatedly, vowing to aid her in any way that they could. He lost himself in his thoughts as they rode north towards Rohan. He vowed to take the time to get to know they young woman who was only months older than his sister. He would do his best to keep her safe and do his part.
Though the ten man Guard that was established was mean to be temporary, after her kidnapping the representatives of the realms were reluctant to leave her side. Brenna travelled with nearly all of her elvish Guard members, as well as companies from Rohan, Gondor, the Dunedain, and the elves. It was truly a sight to behold seeing the mixed group riding across the lands. Brenna and Oriel rode while protectively surrounded by the company.
They stopped frequently and took their time getting to Rohan, differing greatly from the last time that Brenna made her way there. Brenna would stop as she went, healing what she could of the land and checking with the residents if they had any wounded from the war that needed healing. She often exhausted herself healing the badly injured and maimed soldiers along the way. One of her Guard members would scoop her up and carry her back to Ash when she finished. Legolas would more often than not have her ride with him when she was too weary to ride.
It was five days later that they reached the border of Rohan. A smaller party had scouted and rode ahead to let the border town let them know of their arrival. Brenna and Oriel were greeted warmly by the people. They were brought into a nearby home by one of the wives of the Riders in her group. The Rider and his family welcomed her to their home for the night. A bath was drawn and warm hearty stew shared. Brenna thanked the Rider and his wife. She stood and stared speculatively at the couple and let her senses search out around the couple. Looking at his wife, Brenna took her and sat her at the table by the fire.
"How long have you been married?" she asked quietly.
"Five years milady," the woman replied happily, unsure where the conversation was going.
Looking to the Rider, tall and proud watching her curiously she asked, "Do you trust me?"
"Of course Lady Brenna," the man answered fiercely.
Brenna turned to Oriel and told her quietly to bring the members of her elvish Guard. Oriel looked at her in question but Brenna just shook her head. Still holding the woman's hand, Brenna told her to relax.
Oriel led the elves into the room and the Rider, whom she found was named Herumer. Dernhild, his wife sat with Brenna at her side was not sure what was going on. She looked to her husband in concern. He knelt at her side taking her hand, now becoming concerned.
Wulf, Dernhelm, Fram, and Haleth had stepped in and offered solidarity and support to their fellow Rider. Brenna quietly spoke to the couple, explaining to them what she discovered. Dernhild gasped and clutched at her husband with tears pouring down her cheeks. They hadn't considered or thought that there would be a problem. They had assumed that their lack of children wasn't a problem. Brenna soothed the woman and urged them both to sit and calm down.
Her Rohirric Guard members stepped forward and comforted their comrade as Brenna began explaining that she would try to help. The couple looked at her with such a look of hope that she prayed to the Valar for their aid and blessings in her task. Her forehead flared and warmed in answer and she sighed with a soft smile.
Dernhild looked at her with wide eyes. "You really are blessed by the gods."
Brenna laughed softly and shrugged. "We are all blessed in our own way. I will do what I can to help, but you must trust me and relax. You may feel a warming sensation and some discomfort, but I'm only trying to heal you," she assured the tawny haired woman.
Brenna helped her to lay back on the bench. The men shifted around unsure what to do. They watched as Brenna ran her hands, hovering over Dernhild's abdomen. Her hands glowed a soft blue and the light seemed to engulf Dernhild's body. She gasped in surprise, causing Herumer to tense, but she otherwise bore the discomfort silently. They watched and Brenna murmured in elvish over the woman.
Brenna's world fell away as she focused solely on healing the body of the woman in front of her. Paying careful attention to each organ, she corrected any damage or problems that she could find. Everything around her slowed down, pulling back she swayed slightly and she slumped slightly against the bench. Dernhild winced slightly as she sat up but otherwise seemed find. She reached for Brenna who had grasped the bench and trembled and she slowly let the visions come to her.
Flash! Three golden haired children ran in the fields playing. Flash! A rogue band of orcs and Wargs were surrounding the small border town. Flash! She saw the Westfold wilt, charred and desolate. Flash! She saw the elvish realms and watched the mass exodus from Arda begin. Flash! Flash! Flash!
Brenna drew out of the vision with a gasp. Her whole body trembled and she found that Dernhild was holding her and speaking in rapid Rohirric. Brenna relaxed in her embrace and the woman switched to Westron, asking if she was okay.
Brenna nodded and smiled tiredly at her. "You are healed now my friend." Turning towards Herumer she said, "Your House will be blessed with three children that I could see."
The man looked like he was swallowing back his emotions and Dernhild was opening crying and thanking Brenna. She embraced her as she cried and released her to launch herself at her husband. Brenna smiled softly, still kneeling on the group. Turning to her Rohirric Guard she noticed that they were all affected by the scene before them.
"Lady Brenna," Haleth addressed her. "What you have done here will be something that none shall ever forget. You've already done and helped us so much. Our country is going to need all the people to recover what we have lost."
Legolas regarded her quietly, "Sister, what else did you See?"
The room quieted as they looked at the exhausted elf maiden. "I saw the three children playing in the fields. Then it jumped to a band of orcs and Wargs attacking and surrounding a border town. Messengers must be sent out and the borders fortified from attack. The outlying villages are somewhat unprotected. Someone needs to send word to Eomer," she told them tiredly.
"Was there anything else milady?" Fram asked kneeling beside her.
Looking at him wearily, "I need to make a detour to the Westfold before heading to Lothlorien."
Herumer offered her use of the second bedroom in his home for the night. It was clear that she was too tired to continue. She was going to protest at first, but Dernhild told her it was the least that they could do for their friend. Brenna smile gratefully and allowed Oriel to help her to stand. She swayed and Legolas swept her up in his arms and carried her to the room that she insisted on sharing with Oriel. Too tired to do much else, Brenna slept, sharing the bed with Oriel.
The Riders dispatched messengers to the neighboring villages and sent their fastest Rider to Edoras with a missive for Eomer. He was told of everything that Brenna had said and done. The young Rider reached the city of Edoras just as the sun was climbing in the sky. He raced up the main street of the city and ran up the steps of the Hall.
Eomer was sitting in the Hall taking his breakfast when the messenger entered looking somewhat haggard. He took the message and immediately read it. Calling loudly for Eothain and his other advisors, he stood. Thanking the young man, he told him to rest and take food. He called for his armor to be brought and he eored to be assembled. The news startled those present in the Hall, but he explained the message sent forward from Wulf.
His battalion of Riders were quickly assembled and briefed. He sent out instructions to all of his provinces and ordered a number of Riders and soldiers to be distributed throughout their neighboring towns and borders. With their orders, the men left to quickly make ready to ride out and meet Lady Brenna at Aldburg and escort her to wherever she needed to go on in the Westfold.
Eomer's thoughts strayed, his brow furrowed in worry thinking of the damage and suffering of the Westfold and his people as a whole. Sighing, he read the missive from Brenna saying that his sister was with child and felt warmth surge through his chest. He was happy for his sister and could not wait to start that chapter of life for himself and have a family of his own. His thoughts strayed to Lothíriel and he ached, missing her dearly. There was correspondence monthly when they could manage it.
His squire approached him and informed him that his things were ready. Eothain entered the room, he wanted to go with them, but as Eomer's second he was charged with staying in Meduseld. Déorwyn walked into the Hall, one hand on the swell of her rounded stomach. The children raced in after her laughing and clamoring to see Eothain and Eomer. She smiled warmly as she heard the news of Eowyn's good news and rubbed her own belly. It wouldn't be much longer now.
Eomer dressed to leave and grabbed his packs. His squire helped him to put his armor on and handed him his sword. They went to the Hall where his men had assembled, ready to ride. Everyone knew their duties, with parting words and blessings, the men left the Hall and mounted their waiting steads. They spurned their horses and made their way out of the city with the White Horse banner flapping in the wind as the rode out across the rolling plains.
Brenna woke, refreshed and ready to greet the day. Oriel was already up and bustling around the room. The two elf maidens each dressed in a fresh riding habit and stored their dirty clothing in a bag within their packs. Making sure they had everything they exited their room and made their way downstairs. Dernhild greeted them both with a heartfelt smile as they entered the main room of the house. There was a warm, cheery fire lit in the hearth and breakfast was waiting for them. Brenna smiled in thanks and sat to eat the meal with her new friend.
Herumer entered the home and greeted the ladies. He dropped a kiss on his wife's head as he sat to eat with them. They exchanged stories and laughed, enjoying each other's company throughout the meal. When they had finished he took his wife's hand and told Brenna that she would always have a place to stay with them in her travels in Rohan. He thanked her. Dernhild expressed her tearful thanks and hugged Brenna tightly.
Brenna pulled back with a smile and winked at the couple. "You'll need that extra room sometime in the next year or so," she told them with a grin.
Dernhild looked at her husband with bright eyes and laughed happily. He pulled her to his chest and thanked Brenna again. Brenna and Oriel grabbed their things and made their way from the home with the couple following behind them. Once outside, Brenna wrapped her cloak tightly around her. Though bright and sunny, there was a bitter coldness setting in the air and the winds were picking up this morning.
Brenna's Guard and the company escorting her gathered their things and got their horses ready for travel. The village elder approached Brenna and spoke to her. Dernhelm stood with her and translated for her. The elderly man told her that their village was grateful for her aid and would always welcome her and her kin. Brenna grasped the old man's gnarled hands in her own and spoke to him. Her hands glowed a soft blue as she soothed the ache and fixed what she could for him. She told him that she was grateful for their hospitality and the kindness of his people.
Dernhelm watched her as she healed the elder's hands and translated what she was saying to the old man. He choked back emotion seeing that she was helping, asking for nothing in return. Wulf, Fram, and Haleth as well as the other Riders present watched what she did. As she finished speaking to the man he looked down at his hands, flexing and bending his knuckles freely for the first time in years. With tears unashamedly running down his wrinkled and whiskered face, he kissed her hands and garbled something at her she couldn't discern. Dernhelm told her that the man thanked her and blessed her in a very choked voice.
She smiled kindly at the man and nodded. The people of the village had seen and heard what she had done. They expressed their thanks and gratitude as Brenna mounted Ash. She looked around the village with a critical eye and called over Wulf and Herumer.
"Herumer, I think that you and some of your men need to stay here and protect the village," she told him quietly.
Both he and Wulf looked at her sharply and nodded. Herumer selected the men in his company, many of whom lived in the village and surrounding area. He thanked her for the warning and the help that she had given the people.
She smiled widely and told him that it was the least that she could do after imposing on their hospitality. Waving off his protest, she explained to him that she helped because it was the right thing to do. Looking directly at him she explained that it was her job and duty to help transition Arda to the rule of Man. Part of that job was making sure that there were good men there to do so.
Once everyone was ready the assembled group rode out. They set a fast hard pace, intending to reach Aldburg within a few hours. As they neared the holdings there, Brenna felt a chill run down her spine. There was a whisper on the wind and she called out reigning in, halting her horse looking around.
"What is it Brenna?" Fram asked as his fellow Riders circled round forming a protective ring around Brenna and Oriel.
Brenna sat in the saddle and her eyes went unfocused. Drawing a shaky breath and pulling out her bow, "Sound the horns, we're about to have company."
A fierce howl sounded in the distance. Oriel looked around with wide eyes. Fram blow loud and clear on his horn. The others in the group sounded theirs as well. On the horizon Brenna could see the cloud of dust signaling an approaching group of Riders. There was an answering horn blast as the howls and growls became louder.
Ash snorted and stamped impatiently as did the other war-horses. Oriel made a sound of distress, but drew her bow anyways. Brenna went beside her and soothed her friend. She began to sing, letting her voice carry on the wind around them. Sending her voice to their aid crossing the plains, lending strength and speed to their swift race to their side. Letting her voice resonate through their company she sang of courage, protection, and strength. Ending her song, she started praying to the Valar, asking for their protection and aid.
Brenna closed her eyes and braced herself. In the distance from the west she heard the approaching thundering of hooves as the growls had finally reached them. Opening her eyes she drew a breath and notched an arrow in her bow. Seeing the first glimpse of the massive Wargs, she let it fly. The company let loose volley after volley. The Riders threw spears and faced the fearsome beasts.
Eomer and he eored raced across the plains and watched in horror as a pack of Wargs surrounded them. He sounded the charge and their battle horns rang out in the air. Spears were held ready and let fly as they approached and it was an all-out battle. Eomer fought his way towards Brenna. The pack was quickly dispatched, but not without casualties. There were a number of wounded.
Eomer and the others helped those that could wait on their horses as Brenna raced to the sides of those that were suffering from more severe wounds. By the time she treated the ten men that would have died immediately from their wounds she was swaying. Legolas picked her up in his arms and carried her to where Ash was being held by Rumil. The elves helped to treat those that they could, but their skill was not at the same level.
Rumil took Brenna in his arms while Legolas mounted Ash and reached down for her. She rested her head on his shoulder as he held her across her lap. Haldir and his brothers looked at the slumbering elleth curiously and somewhat concerned. Eomer approached and ask how she was.
"She's sleeping now," Legolas told him quietly. "Luckily she was able to give us some warning, though I believe that even she was surprised by the attack."
"The worst of the wounded have been treated, but we should make way to the safety behind the walls of Aldburg." Eomer told them seriously. "We'll pile the carcasses and burn them, but we need to get behind the safety of the walls as soon as possible."
They set about quickly piling the bodies of the Wargs. As soon as they were finished they mounted up and rode hard for the fortified city of Aldburg. The company rode hard and fast to reach Aldburg as quickly as possible. Brenna slumbered, unaware of their change in scenery. Legolas held the young elf maiden cradled to his chest. He looked down at her and whispered, "Sleep well gwathel."
The elvish members of Brenna's Guard smile softly at the phrase. She really was becoming like a sister to many of them. Seeing her fight so valiantly and fiercely and then push away her own fatigue to then heal and help others, her companions were humbled by the young woman. She was a tribute to their people and many of them admired her.
The men who hadn't seen her fight before, certainly knew that she could handle herself now. Oriel, once the fighting had begun, had set aside her fear and fought fiercely as well. Being an elf handmaiden typically didn't require the skill to use weapons. She had trained at the insistence of her father many years ago, despite her choice of lifestyle being more of a gentle domestic role. He didn't want her to be vulnerable and unable to defend herself should the need ever arise.
The company entered the gates of Aldburg and rode up the main road towards the Hall of the Lord. The Keep and land belonged to Eomer and his father before him. Though he now lived at Meduseld, he still often visited the village of his birth and childhood. The new Third Marshall now looked after this holding for Eomer.
The farmers in the nearby homes and farms sought refuge within the city walls. Hearing the battle signal of the horns sent them all fleeing behind the defensive walls of the keep. Many of them looked at the group in concern and more than a little fear in their eyes. Eomer called out to them letting them know what had happened and warned them to be vigilant and cautious in the coming days. He invited them all to stay within the city walls until it was safer in their lands.
The company came to a halt in front of the steps to the Lord's Hall of the keep. Eomer dismounted and went to take Brenna from Legolas. She slept through the actions and noise around her. The injured were helped into the Hall and hot water was brought for the company to wash.
Eomer walked quickly through the halls with Oriel and Brenna's Guard following behind. He called out a few commands in Rohirric and two maids came scurrying into the room after them. He issued orders to the young women to help Oriel and Brenna and asked them to have baths drawn for the ladies. He gently laid her on the bed in the room and took his leave.
Legolas and the other elves checked her over and said that she was just resting and recovering from the energy that she had expelled. They too left the room and Oriel and the maids set about removing Brenna's soiled travel clothes. They gently cleaned her and redressed her in a linen undershirt and leggings. The maids assisted Oriel and took all of their dirty clothes to be laundered.
Brenna drifted into deeper sleep. Lorien kept her dreams peaceful and calm as the other Valar visited her and talked to her of the next leg of her journey. Este soothed her weariness and aches, while Elbereth sang to her quietly. They let her drift off deeper and slumber through the night.
Groaning, Brenna rolled over and glared at the light filtering into the room. She pulled the blankets up over her shoulders and burrowed into the warm bed. She blinked and then launched sitting up. Looking around she realized that she was indeed in a bed. Glancing around she saw the Rohirric design of the decorations and breathed easier. Her heart was still racing and there was a slight trembling to her hands but she fought back the memories.
She stood and crossed the room careful not to disturb Oriel. Finding a basin of water she washed herself. The tepid water made her shiver, but made her focus and wake. Shivering slightly, she ran a comb through her hair and braided it quickly. She found her pack and dug out the rest of her tunic and tugged on her boots. Quietly she strapped on her weapons and crept out of the room, letting her friend sleep.
Walking down the hall towards the sound of voices she entered the hall to find Eomer and the rest of her company sitting and talking. They greeted her in surprise, none had expected her to be up so early in the morning. She greeted them with a smile and immediately went to the wounded, ignoring the concerns of the others. She healed and soothed them methodically. Once she was sure that she had seen all of them, she sat down and accepted the bowl of porridge waiting for her.
The group talked quietly and made preparations to travel to Edoras that day making as much of the day light as possible. Eomer decided to leave some of the Riders that had accompanied Brenna here in Aldburg to protect their holdings. Oriel joined them a short while later before the group broke and went to pack.
They set out and made good time, easily reaching Edoras with not disruptions. After a brief rest, Brenna requested a chance to ride to the Westfold. Eomer looked at her questioningly, to which she responded with a smile and her green eyes sparkling with excitement. He nodded and made the arrangements. And so Brenna and company traveled west for a time.
Hours passed before Brenna slowed Ash and calling them to halt. The Riders looked around remorsefully seeing the scorched and desolate fields surrounding them. Eomer looked around with his jaw clenched and looked to Brenna with hope in his eyes. She smiled softly and nodded to him.
She dismounted from Ash and walked out a few yards before she kneeled on the ground, uncaring of the dirty seeping into her clothing. Digging her hands deep within the parched soil, she closed her eyes and felt out with her power. Singing the songs of Vana and Este, she called for the waters from deep within the ground. She urged the land to heal and flourish, seeking the seeds buried deep within the ground. Her voice picked up and the wind swirled around her, pulsing with her power. The air around her seemed to crackle with the building crescendo of power pouring off of her.
The company watched silently as her forehead glowed brightly and her hands flared blue. The hazy azure tendrils of her power seeped out from her hands spreading far and wide. Beneath their feet they could feel the consistency of the soil change and watched as tiny delicate little sprouts of green poked from the now rich soil. Eomer slowly approached Brenna, kneeling next to her on the ground he watched as she healed his lands.
After some time Legolas called out to her and told her to pull back. With a sigh she sat back on her heels and opened her eyes. Eomer cleaned her hands with a cloth provided and looked out over the vast fields around them stretching far and wide. Where there was once a black wasteland now showed the tiny specs of green. He gently helped her to her feet and steadied her as she staggered in exhaustion.
"Brenna," he began emotionally.
She stopped him with a wave of her hand and a smile as she leaned on him a bit. He led her carefully to where their horses were. "Can you ride Brenna or do you need to ride with someone else?" he asked her quietly.
With a tired smile, "I should probably ride with someone as we make our way back to Edoras. If I could impose on your hospitality I will need to stay and recover or a few days. While there I will see to some of your wounded men from the war." Her green eyes sparkled happily, "Your second in command will be welcoming his child in the next few days and I thought that I would offer my assistance."
There were cheers among the Riders with the news. Eomer smiled broadly, but sobered saying, "Brenna you are never an imposition here in Rohan. My home is yours little sister. My people and I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for us."
"Well now that that's settled, who am I riding with and how quickly will we get there?" she asked with a small laugh.
They set out quickly for Edoras and reached the Halls of Meduseld within a few hours. Brenna was brought to the rooms that were now considered hers. Oriel was given the rooms across the hall. Baths were drawn and Brenna changed into a night shirt she found in her chest of drawers. She crawled into bed and let sleep take her.
The days that she spent in Edoras flew by in a blur. She spent time with and healed dozens of men who had been permanently injured from the war. Some mornings she could be found out in the pasture or in the stables with Hiril and her foals. The morning of her third day brought Eothain frantically seeking her. She laughed at him, but followed to his rooms where Déorwyn was laboring with their child.
Much like with Arwen, Brenna assisted her friend. Hours passed and Déorwyn fought and pushed. Just past the evening meal, the squalling of a newborn could be heard in the Halls. Eothain greeted his daughter Freda. Brenna stayed with mother and child, soothing and healing as much of the traumatic experience for them as she could. Eothain was so thrilled he picked her up, spinning her around and gave her a smacking kiss on her cheek. He thanked her and proudly showed off his little daughter.
Two days later Brenna and her company set out with an additional force of twenty Riders. She wore a deep red and gold colored riding habit in Rohirric fashion. All of her other clothing and belongings were secured tightly in her pack. She had on her thick and warm Rohirric cloak and made her way through the halls. She had her weapons strapped on and she was ready to leave.
Eomer greeted her warmly and gave her a hug as she said goodbye. He held her tightly and wished her well on her travels, telling her to remain safe and to stay out of trouble. Beleg who had been nearby snorted and laughed. Trouble seemed to follow Brenna everywhere, though they prayed that she would remain safe. It was a well fed and rest group that prepared to continue north while the weather still held out. Everyone was scrubbed clean and dressed in fresh clothing after many days in their riding clothing, which was a relief to everyone in the company.
Brenna said her goodbyes and rode out of Edoras with her company, turning north traveling as swiftly as possible. Eomer watched them go from the steps of Meduseld. He prayed that they would be safe. With a sigh he returned to the hall when he could no longer see them. There was far too much to do and little idle time for the King.
The company rode hard and rested little. They followed the Anduin River north and stayed along their set path. With no interruptions or trouble along the way, they were able to reach the border of Lothlorien in six days. They were met by the Wardens and led into the safety of the trees. The Wardens welcomed them warmly and led them towards the talans and platforms nearby. They would stay near the borders for the night with the Wardens before making their way to Caras Galadhon. Brenna enjoyed the company of the elves of Lothlorien. She smiled softly, humming to herself while watching the happy reunion of the elves. Looking around the group, she saw that the men in her company were talking quietly together and interacting with their elvish counterparts.
Looking to the stars shining brightly in the clear night sky Brenna began to sing. Her voice had a haunting tone and quality to it as she sang of the stars and Valinor. An ache and a longing to go Home welled up within her as she let the words wash over her. Her travel companions and the elves that had given them shelter for the night listened in silence. Many of the elves felt an ache as her words swept through them. They could almost picture the vast white shores and the vibrant green lands beyond.
With her back leaning against the trunk of the tree, she rested her eyes and continued humming. Legolas knelt next to her and wrapped her in a thick blanket. He took a seat next to her and let her lean into his side. He looked to his kin and gave them a piercing look.
"Little sister," Legolas tried to get her attention. "What troubles you so?"
"Though I am honored and excited to return to the home of my mother, it saddens me to know that her kin are now leaving these shores." She told him quietly. "When we finally reach the heart of Lothlorien, you will find that the realm has only a small number of elves remaining. Many of which will accompany us back south and then to Ithilien to live with you."
The elves in her company seemed startled and saddened to hear the news, but knew that their kin were leaving these shores. Many of them would be leaving in the next few years, but there were a significant number of elves present that would wait to cross with Brenna. Some of them were not yet ready to say goodbye to the home that they had made in Arda.
She leaned her head on Legolas's shoulder and sighed. "I'm scared Legolas," she admitted to him quietly. "The reality of what I will be facing is weighing heavily with each passing day. I will have to watch them all fade and die. Whether due to the passage of time, illness, or injury, they will all eventually die. I cannot bear the thought."
The elves nearby that heard looked at her sympathetically. Many of them had not had dealings with mortals very often over the years. They felt for Brenna and were saddened at the thought of the fate of men. Haldir and his brother's looked particularly startled as they observed the men in their company. It was beginning to sink in to the immortals of the group the reality of Man.
Brenna huddled against Legolas and hummed softly, letting her voice lull herself and the others. Letting her mind wander, she allowed herself drift slowly to sleep with Legolas watching over her. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, letting her sleep, while talking to his kin.
Many of them looked at his arm pointedly. He scolded them and told them that he did not care for her more than that of siblings. The elves in question, most of them border Wardens, visibly relaxed and nodded in acknowledgement. All of the elves knew of her betrothal to Elladan and the significance of the ring on her right hand. They also knew that they were forming a bond that would grow deeper with time.
With the dawn, the group quickly packed and set out for Caras Galadhon. By midday they reached the heart of the realm and true to Brenna's word, there was a significant drop in the number of elves residing there. Many had left with their Lady and others had followed their Lord to Rivendell. Of those left, more than half would be leaving with them when they headed back south. The rest would eventually make their way to Rivendell and the Gray Havens to depart.
Brenna dismounted and thanked Ash for his help. He snorted and nudged her in the shoulder. She laughed softly as she rubbed his velvety nose with her hand. The interaction made her male counterparts grin and laugh. The Rohirric members of her Guard present smiled in understanding. Many of the Dunedain and Gondorian knights who didn't know her well watched in amusement.
Oriel laughed and grabbed her things and set off towards her Talan. Brenna waved her friend off and grabbed her own packs, but stopped short. She bit her lip and looked around, not quite sure where she would be staying now.
As if sensing her inner struggle, Haldir and his brothers approached her. "Brenna, your parents Talan is available to you if you would like to stay there. Your things were moved there by the Lady before she left," Haldir told her.
Smiling in relief, she nodded and followed them up the many steps to the many catwalks suspended high above the ground. The Talan was not far from the dwelling of the Lord and Lady. It looked as though the roof had recently been thatched and other repairs made. He opened the door to grant her access and stood back letting her explore.
Brenna breathed deeply, and began to familiarize herself with her parents' things. The hand carved furniture was beautiful, but had the signs of use. She found some of their clothes in the bedroom and stopped short seeing her cradle. Kneeling next to it she touched the blankets there with shaking hands. Letting the tears flow, she cried for the life that she could have had.
Haldir, told Rumil to get Oriel as he and Orophin approached her. They tried, somewhat awkwardly to comfort the girl, a bit out of their element. Oriel entered and would have smiled at the uncomfortable and stiffness in the actions of the Wardens, but the situation was far too serious. She gathered her grieving friend into her arms and told them to get Legolas.
Once he entered the Talan followed by the other members of her Elvish Guard, he made his way to her side and helped to soothe the sadden elf maiden. He looked around the rooms and realized that she was in her parents' former home. Sighing he rubbed her back and murmured words of comfort to her.
With a shuddering breath, she calmed and blinked with sore eyes. She tried apologizing, but they told her that she had nothing to be sorry for. Brenna looked around the rooms and knew that as much as she wanted to, she could not stay here. She looked slightly embarrassed and ashamed.
"Could I possibly have some of the things here packed and sent to Rivendell or the Gray Havens to wait for me?" she asked Haldir. "I'll go through the things that I would like to keep, but I'm not sure I'd be okay staying here. It hurts too much," she told them hoarsely.
Oriel helped her go through the things. Jewelry, trinkets, some of the clothing and cloaks were all stored in a chest to be transported. Brenna looked around and had the rocking chair and the cradle ready to move as well. The things she selected would be taken with the next group of elves leaving for Rivendell, where it would be put in the rooms that Elrond had set aside for her.
Nodding to Oriel, she told her that the Talan and everything else in it could be used for whoever needed or wanted it. Oriel helped her gather her things and move back into the rooms that she had used in the Main Talan. Oriel was using her rooms down the hall so they wouldn't be completely alone.
Brenna spent the cold winter months with her kinsmen under the mellyrn trees. Some days she could be found walking among the dormant and sleeping trees, singing softly. Other days she was often in various parts of the forest healing and exploring. She sparred and practiced shooting her bow regularly. Haldir and his brothers gifted her with a bow of the Galadhrim. She thanked them and had them show her the difference in the bow with the one that she already had.
The cold months passed and the days grew longer as spring was upon them. Brenna looked to her friends and told them that she would need to leave for Ithilien soon. They made preparations to leave and head to Ithilien as swiftly as possible. She told the remaining elves in Lothlorien that she would return briefly before continuing on to Greenwood. Legolas looked thrilled at the thought of returning home, if only for a brief time.
The company of Dunedain Rangers had departed just before the winter set in, though Ohtar chose to stay with Brenna. The elves of Greenwood traveled north with them, but turned towards their home and they parted ways. Brenna told both groups that she would travel to their realms in the future. She assured the elves that she would return to their home within the month. To the Dunedain, she told them to remain vigilant and that she would come north in the next five or so years.
Brenna's company rode out of Lothlorien with an additional twenty elvish warriors as added protection and followed the Anduin south, setting a swift pace. Brenna briefly stopped in Fanghorn along the way, talking to the trees and awakening some of the sleeping ones. The elves watched in fascination as the trees responded to her. With promises to return, she continued on. They took little rest and few stops along the way.
A party of Riders awaited them on the borders of Rohan. They escorted them quickly down the Great West Road. Many of them told her that her warning came at a good time as many of their border towns were subjected to attacks during the cold winter months. Few were hurt and they credited her with the survival of many of the villages that would have been wiped out.
Just outside of Aldburg they were greeted by Eomer who would be traveling with them south for the birth of his nephew. Brenna greeted him with a smile and cheerfully thanked the Riders who would be returning to their posts now that she had been safely escorted to Eomer. They continued on riding long and hard to Osgiliath, only stopping there for the night to rest. Brenna woke early, washing the weeks of travel from her body, she dressed in a green riding habit. She packed her things and strapped her weapons on as she made her way swiftly down the hallway.
Stepping outside she noticed that most of her companions were still asleep or just waking. She carried her packs to the stables where she knew Ash was being held. Taking a bucket of oats, she fed the horses there before grabbing a brush and heading for Ash. She hummed softly and she brushed him out and checked his hooves. Seeing that there were no problems, she went to find her saddle and tack. She jumped a bit startled to see the Rohirric members of her Guard leaning against the wall of the stall grinning at her.
"We'll make a Rider out of you yet Lady Brenna," Wulf called out cheerfully.
There was a resounding cheer among the Rohirrim, drawing the attention of their other travel companions. Brenna led Ash from his stall once he was saddled. Eomer checked the straps and her work carefully and nodded with a grin tugging at his lips. "Nicely done," he commended her.
She laughed and tethered him to a post outside. Taking her packs, she stored them carefully in her saddlebags and waited for the others to be ready. Oriel came hustling out of the building they had stayed in carrying her things, dressed and ready to go.
When everyone had eaten something and gotten their gear ready, they mounted up and set off east toward Ithilien. Brenna urged them to pick up the pace. Excitement bubbled up within her thinking of seeing Elladan again. She shared a knowing look with Eomer, who appeared to be thinking of his own betrothed as they rode straight through the day.
They made camp as night began to fall and planned to get an early start the next day. Brenna and Oriel were placed near the center of the group near the fire, protectively surrounded by their travel companions as was the routine. Though they hadn't experienced trouble or seen any indication that there would be any, none were willing to take the chance. A watch was set and Brenna drifted off to sleep.
As the sun started to gradually lighten the sky, the travel companions gathered their things and prepared to break camp. Once everything was packed, they mounted their horses and set out. In hopes of reaching the holdings of Faramir before sundown, they set a quick pace and pushed their horses. Along the way Brenna looked around, taking in the surroundings and improvement of the land since she had last been there. Smiling softly to herself, she silently thanked the Valar for their blessings and aid.
As the crested one of the many rolling hills they could see the newly finished settlement in the distance. Brenna's heart raced and her excitement seemed to bubble over. The elves nearby glanced at her with amused looks on their faces. The members of her Elvish Guard nodded to her encouragingly. With wistful smiles they regarded their young charge as she looked to hopeful and full of love at the thought of seeing her betrothed.
Each of them got lost in their own thoughts as they continued forward. Over the past months Brenna had sat and talked with each of them about their future families. She told them of their mates, describing them and their future children. They would have children! Many of them were thrilled at the idea and felt a pang of longing. It was a reminder to them what lay ahead for them and that it wouldn't be too long for them. For immortals it was but a blink of time.
A signal was given in the distance and the gates were opened. Brenna could see the figures assembling in the courtyard and searched for Elladan. Seeing his figure standing there, she felt a surge of warmth. She was off Ash and swept into his arms before most had even dismounted. He spun her around with a laugh and held her close. She clung to him, breathing in his scent and relaxing in his strong hold. Pulling back slightly, she looked up at him with a lump in her throat. Oh how she had missed him!
"You are looking well melamin," he said while gently smoothing the hair away from her face. "I have missed you these past months. Hopefully you have not had much trouble in your travels."
She ducked and grinned at him somewhat sheepishly. He looked at her with a raised eyebrow, "There was trouble I take it," he stated somewhat deadpan.
"It was months ago now, so it should not trouble you." She said evasively.
"Brenna," Legolas said somewhat sharply. "Just tell him so he will not worry needlessly."
By now they had an audience. "Well, in Rohan on our way to Lothlorien we had a bit of a run in with some Wargs."
"Lass," Ohtar of the Dunedain spoke up, "A pack of starving and angry Wargs is not just some. We were lucky that Eomer and his eored had arrived."
Elladan's hands tighten reflexively on her, as he pulled her close and tucked her snugly at his side. He turned and glared at Aragorn with an accusing stare. "Surely you had word?" he asked.
"Aye, word had come weeks later with a full report from Eomer. I had thought not to worry you over something that had already happened Elladan." Aragorn responded in a placating manner.
"I have half a mind to keep you hidden and locked away somewhere Brenna," Elladan told her only joking slightly.
Elrohir approached with a grin and held his arms out for his future little sister. Elladan reluctantly let her leave his side and watched as his brother spun her around causing her to laugh. He observed his brother lean in and talk quietly with Brenna as they walked back to his side. He guessed they were talking about his brother's mate. Swallowing a lump in his throat, he prayed that the passing years would be kind to the elves remaining with Brenna. Knowing what was waiting for them would give them hope and something to look forward to in Valinor, but it would also make the longing strong in them.
Brenna stepped back into Elladan's arms, and turned to greet Aragorn and Arwen who stepped forward holding little Duvaissel. She reached out her little arms and Brenna took her with a laugh and snuggled the little princess close. Duvaissel rested her dark haired head on Brenna's shoulder and sunk into her aunt's embrace. Brenna greeted her friends and extended family. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Lothíriel and Eomer talking quietly together, smiling happily.
Holding the preciously little one in her arms, she hummed softly while following the others into Faramir's Halls. Elladan led her in with a hand on the small of her back. Looking down at his little elf maiden he was swamped with emotions envisioning their future together.
Brenna suddenly stopped humming and gasped, clutching protectively at the child as the visions came to her. Flash! She saw Elboron playing with Elfwine and Eldarion. Flash! She saw the mist and shadow shift in the North. Flash! She saw the men of the East and South on the move. Flash! She saw herself visiting the Shire before Frodo left. Flash! Flash! Flash!
Brenna pulled out of it to find Elladan holding her up and little Duvaissel touching her face, clearly distressed. She sagged into Elladan's arms and let Elrohir take his niece, lifting her up and making her squeal with laughter. The sweet child laid her head on his broad chest and snuggled in perfectly content with her uncle holding her.
Elladan swept her up despite her protest and carried her to the nearest parlor, following behind Faramir as he led the way. Eowyn waddled uncomfortably in the room, though none were brave enough to tell the Witch-king slayer that she did so. She stopped short seeing Brenna being carried to one of the available couches and took a seat nearby asking her friend what had happened.
Brenna closed her eyes wearily and told them what she had seen. The description of the heirs of the realms playing together made all of them smile happily, but their expressions turned grim as she spoke about the other scenes she had Seen. Aragorn called Ohtar into the room and spoke with him quietly. He had opted to stay with Brenna in Halabard's stead as the other man was needed more greatly at home.
Clasping Eowyn's hand, Brenna regarded her glowing friend. Eowyn smiled beautifully, full of love and joy, as she place Brenna's hand on her protruding stomach. Her son was kicking a great deal. Brenna marveled at the feel of the strong, new life beneath her hand. She grinned at her friend and announced, "Within the next week he will be here."
"You are certain Brenna?" Eowyn asked. "It's still weeks sooner than I was told by the healers and midwife."
"I am positive Eowyn. Trust me, he is perfectly healthy and ready to greet the world." Brenna told her friend with a reassuring smile.
She sat up despite the protest of her betrothed. Making room on the couch, she beckoned him to sit beside her. Drawing a deep breath, she let her senses expand around her, her eyes flew open and she looked at Arwen in surprise. Arwen's responding smile was answer enough.
"You will be just at the end of your second trimester for the wedding in Edoras Arwen. I cannot foresee trouble in your travels, though I would recommend a carriage and you will safely deliver in Minas Tirith." Brenna told her friend with a smile. "It will be a few years yet before Eldarion is born, but your next little princess will bring you as much joy as the one that you have."
Aragorn who was now holding his daughter put his arm around his wife's shoulders. He smiled and inclined his head towards Brenna in thanks at her news. The others were settling in, but Lothíriel turned towards Brenna looking somewhat shy.
"You saw my son?" she asked quietly. Eomer stilled, looking at Brenna with wide eyes.
"Yes I saw your son. I will be there for his birth as well." Brenna stated in a matter of fact manner. "He will be much like his father and loved by his people. Tall and broad like his forefathers, but with the grace of his mother's people."
Brenna's eyes had gone clouded a bit, before she came back to them with a smile. She hummed softly, holding Elladan's hand in her own. Smiling up at him softly, she thought of their own children. He brought her hand to his lips and gently kissed her knuckles.
"If you are sufficiently recovered Brenna, perhaps our guests should prepare for dinner." Faramir offered quietly, while beaming down at his wife.
Elladan helped her stand and led her down the halls towards the rooms where she would be staying. Oriel was across the hall, with Lothíriel in the room to one side of her. Their rooms were on the opposite end of the hall away from the Master Suite, but close enough to be there for Eowyn in her time of need.
The following week passed peacefully, with the joyful anticipation of the arrival of the little prince in the air. The group toured the settlement, Brenna and the men who had been there before marveled at the drastic changes. Faramir accredited the plentiful crops and recovery of the land to Brenna's help. Eowyn, who tired easily, often stayed within their home resting and conserving their energy.
It was one day where they were out touring the gardens that a frantic servant came running to tell them that Lady Eowyn had begun labor. Faramir and Eomer both paled and turned towards the house. Brenna smiled to the ladies and shook her head, following at a more moderate pace. She turned towards her rooms and called out to have Eowyn brought to the Master Suite.
Brenna changed into a more serviceable dress with the help of a maid. Tying her hair back in a thick plait down her back, she exited her room and headed towards where her friend was now beginning what would be a long struggle. Oriel and Lothíriel both came down the hallway and caught up to her. They had opted to change as well in preparation of the birth.
Brenna knocked and they were quickly ushered past the outer sitting room where the men were sitting and pacing. Upon entering the bedroom, she found one of the maids had prepared the bed for the birth. Eowyn had changed into a light dressing gown and was now laying in pain on the bed. Brenna went to her side and checked her and the babe. Arwen who had joined them with Duvaissel sat in the corner of the room, waiting until she was needed.
She turned to the maid and called for fresh linens, a basin of clean water and some towels. Once the things she asked for were provided, she instructed Lothíriel to wipe her brow and sit while talking to her. They would have to wait it out as they were still hours away from the arrival of the child.
The day passed at a snail's pace it seemed. With each passing hour, the pain Eowyn felt increased as the contractions wracked her body forcefully. Brenna got her up out of the bed late in the night and had her pacing, much like she had done for Arwen. It was well past midnight when her waters had finally broken. The pain seemed to be nearly crippling, even with Brenna's help.
Brenna quietly left the room and asked Faramir and the Sons of Elrond to come into the room. Elladan went to her side seeing her so tired and concerned looking. Faramir went to his wife's side and clutched her hands in his own. Brenna whispered to Elladan and Elrohir that she needed their help; that the pain was too much for just her to try to soothe.
The midwife present squawked and gawked at the presence of the males. Brenna quickly silenced her and nodded to the laboring woman in the bed. Pulling her to the side she told the woman that if it went on too much longer she would be too tired to push. Explaining to her in hushed tones that Eowyn needed their help, the woman relented and breathed easier.
Within the hour Eowyn struggled to push, with Faramir behind her, lending what strength and support he could. Brenna had the linens and blanket waiting for the new prince. With one enormous final push just as the sun was coming up, the baby came out and Eowyn let out a string of Rohirric curses that had Brenna giggling at, even as tears came to her eyes holding the large baby boy. Did he ever have a set of lungs on him!
The midwife and maids attended to Eowyn and cleaned the bed while Faramir looked down at his son. He took him reverently from Brenna's arms and presented him to his wife once she was settled in bed comfortably. Brenna went to her and healed what she could before stepping away from the exhausted new mother. Eowyn was pale, but her eyes shone brightly with the happiness and love that she felt.
Brenna left, leaning on Elladan and Elrohir. They told Eomer and Aragorn that they could greet the new child briefly, but both mother and child needed rest. Brenna was led to her rooms where a maid was waiting to assist her. A bath had been drawn and once cleaned she changed into a night shirt. Climbing into the bed, she slept for most of the day.
Brenna stayed a week before she needed to leave. She was reluctant to be parted from her friends but knew that she needed to make it to Greenwood as soon as possible. It would take her weeks to get there. And so Brenna and company prepared to leave. Eomer and his men would escort them to the northern border of Rohan.
Dressed in a red wine colored riding habit, Brenna donned her travel cloak. With her weapons at ready, she carried her packs from her room. Elladan, who had been waiting in the hall shouldered her packs and intertwined her fingers with his own. Their time apart was difficult, but the past two years seemed to have flown by for each of them. They walked whispering quietly to one another.
When they reached the courtyard near the stables, they found that Brenna's travel companions were ready and waiting. Elladan passed her packs off to one of the men who offered to store them in her saddle bags. Turning back to Brenna, he pulled her tightly against his chest and kissed her forehead. She buried her face in his chest and just held him, fighting the emotions welling inside of her.
With a reluctant sigh, she pulled back and kissed him on the cheek. Stepping away, she went to say her goodbyes to her other friends. Before she mounted Ash, Elladan embraced her once more. He whispered to her how much he would miss her and how much he loved her. Reluctantly letting her go, he gave her a boost into the saddle and handed her the reigns. As he stood at her side, she leaned down and whispered that she loved him too and would see him in roughly five months in Edoras.
Straightening in the saddle she smiled and told her friends that she would see them soon. Reminding them that this would be one of her last trips to the elvish realms to the north, she turned Ash. Eomer called for the company to move out and so the group left. Oriel rode quietly next to Brenna, knowing her friend needed to gather her thoughts. It would be a long trek north to Greenwood for them.
The long days of travel passed relatively quickly as the miles flew by. Brenna let Ash stretch his legs, relaxing her grip on the reigns as the horses seemed to fly over the land heading north. Brenna and Oriel seemed to fall into an easy routine with their travel companions. They adapted well and adjusted to the life on the road. Brenna was especially grateful for her faithful and loyal friend.
She lost herself in her thoughts of Oriel and pushed her gift to See the future of her friend. Watching as they docked in the harbor, Brenna saw her friend depart the vessel and race down the dock to her family waiting for her. Off to the side she saw a tall broad warrior with dark hair and light eyes. He seemed to be struck dumb at the sight of the fair elf maiden. Brenna knew it was the instant recognition that her elvish Guard would feel.
Pulling back she noticed that Oriel looked at her in concern and Eomer had fallen back to check on her. Smiling softly she waved off their concern and told them that she was fine. Turning to her left she caught the eye of Legolas and grinned. Her big green eyes sparkling with happiness and laughter, she nodded to Oriel. He whispered the news to the other elves, immediately understanding her meaning. Oriel caught their conversations and turned to Brenna sharply, her eyes filled with longing and hope.
"Aye my friend," Brenna told her with a teasing grin. "Your dark haired warrior will be waiting for you on the shores of Valinor with your family."
Oriel had slow smile spread across her face. She nodded, lost in thought. It helped to strengthen her resolve and push onward. Vowing never to regret her decision to stay, Oriel smiled to her friend and expressed her thanks.
The other elves present were curious. Though unofficially part of her Guard, many of them were staying to aid her and the race of Man in the coming years. Legolas went to rebuke them for asking her as if she were some common fortune teller, but Brenna told him that it was fine. Turning to the other hopeful expressions she told them that she would let them know later when they made camp.
Many hours later and just at the edge of the northern border of Rohan, the group stopped to make camp. Fires were made and bedrolls were set up. Brenna sighed leaning back against one of the logs brought to sit on with her legs stretched out in front of her. Closing her eyes she sought the Council and advice of the Valar. She prayed to them as she let herself drift along to the pristine shores of Valinor. Walking along the white sand with the warm water lapping at her feet, she approach the waiting Valar looking over the seas.
"You seem to have an important question for us little one," Elbereth said with laughter in her voice.
"Yes milady," she told her softly. "The other elves staying in Arda with me are wondering if they too will meet their mates and other halves upon reaching Valinor."
"I thought that it was so," Elbereth told her with a serene smile. "Of course all of our children will meet their mates, though it may be some years down the line for a few of them. They will find peace here and live in harmony."
Brenna breathed a sigh of relief and nodded her thanks. She felt the warm ocean air caress her skin and she smiled. Inhaling deeply the scent of the salt and sand she sat with her bare feet in the surf. Leaning back she looked up at the stars above and let herself drift.
She woke to someone shaking her. Opening her eyes she found a pale Oriel leaning over her. Looking around she saw that her little visit had apparently cause a bit of alarm and commotion among her friends. Sitting up, she turned to the other elves that were pale. Beleg crouched next to her and asked if she was well. She smiled and reassured him that she was well. Her Elvish Guard had come around her to check on her once they felt her fae leave. Haldir looked at her in question.
Grinning in response she turned to address the other elves present. "I have an answer to your question." Silence rang out among the elves. "Elbereth wanted me to let you know that all of their children would find their mates, whether they sail with me or before."
There were exclamations of joy among the elves. It was her message that gave them a renewed sense of hope and purpose. They would stay and look forward to the day that they would be reunited with their kin. But more than that, they now looked forward to the hope of finding their other half and perfect match.
Brenna smiled as she curled up sleepily on her bedroll. Eomer watched from a distance, shaking his head in amusement at the young woman. She seemed to be able to sleep just about anywhere from his observations. He picked up an extra blanket from her saddle bags and covered her with it. While it was spring, there was still a cool bite in the air.
Morning came signaling the parting of Brenna's group and Eomer's company. He was once again sending twenty Riders with her, though the group would rotate, giving the men a chance to visit their homes. She hugged her friend and grinned at him while giving a sly glance towards the original members of her Rohirric Guard. She giggled at his facial expression and answering grin. He laughed loudly as he looked towards the men whom he charged with watching over her. Clasping each of their arms in a warriors greeting, he clapped them on the back still chuckling.
They looked to Brenna curiously, but she just grinned impishly at them and skipped merrily towards Ash. A look of understanding passed their faces and they all smiled hopefully. Erchirion, who had heard the conversation about her Guard meeting their wives in the next few years, observed the group. Brenna stopped and slowly turned towards him with a smile spreading widely across her face. He looked at her with an eyebrow quirked and she nodded.
"Aye, it includes you too. Though your brother Amrothos has already beaten you to it," she declared, causing the men around her to look at her incredulously. "Come now, you didn't think that even he would remain a bachelor did you? He met his match in the daughter of one of the visiting Lords in Dol Amroth and will make his move soon."
Ohtar looked at her speculatively. As if sensing his gaze, she turned to him. Her smile softened. "Even you Dunedain will meet companions and help-mates. Yours my friend is closer than you think. A fiery maiden to match your intensity and fervor for life."
With that she mounted Ash and waited for her startled audience to do so as well. Oriel laughed happily as she mounted her own horse. The group waved goodbye to Eomer's company and turned north, heading back to the elvish realms.
