They dance the night away.
They're fifteen and not allowed to be here, but they know the Marauders. And with a Map in their hands and a Cloak around them, well – Aberforth's not going to tell anyone as long they get back to Hogwarts safely.
It's the best first date Marlene has ever dreamt of.
"I love you," Mary whispers to her when she thinks she's asleep. They're curled up in Marlene's bed in the sixth year girls' dorm, they're dorm mates turning a blind eye to the fact that none of them can remember when Mary's bed was last slept in.
Lily's become particularly proficient with the Silencing Charm – it helps make sure that the status quo remains the way it is.
"I love you too," Marlene whispers back once she's sure that Mary's asleep.
They're in seventh year when they decide to join the Order.
"We could die," Marlene murmurs as they make their way to Dumbledore's office.
"But at least we'd have lived first," Mary replies.
There's nothing more to say after that.
She's flipping a ring through the air when the Death Eaters come for her. She's had it for a few days, wondering if it's not too soon to ask Mary – wondering how Mary will react –
The next think she sees is an emerald curse headed right towards her, and she only has time to think that Mary was right. At least she lived.
Mary's part of the Order team that finds the bodies. She also finds the ring.
Mary dies with a ring on her finger and a curse on her lips not even a month later. She never sees the Death Eater behind her as lets loose a spell that saves Hestia Jones' life.
They bury her and Marlene in one coffin.
They're barely twenty when they die, the two of them. But neither died with even a single regret in their hearts.
They died, but before that, they lived.
