So Watson informed him that he 'kept a bullpup,' unaware of how misconstrued that statement would be.
If he had been speaking of a literal dog, complete with wagging tail and pug nose, he would have stated that he had a bull pup, not kept one as if the creature was on loan. This, paired with odd notions about his travels, led to exasperation and much frustration on Watson's part.
He considered himself more than repaid when, after Holmes's belated return, the latter growled about the inaccuracies of Japanese Baritsu.
