Ok I've had my fun with suspense here's the next chapter :)
Chapter 25 or is it?
"Jamie… it's to late." North said.
Jamie refused to give up though and started trying to do CPR but his hands passed through her. Crying and desperate Jamie leaned down and kissed her gently on the lips.
Jena paused as she actually felt Jamie's kiss. Looking back she let a ghostly tear fall down her cheek.
"Why do I have to go?" She asked turning back to death.
"There is a time for everything and everything in its time." Death said.
"I've heard that before, Bunny says that a lot." Jena remarked.
"Being the Guardian of hope and the bringer of spring he would know a lot about the cycle of life and death. He understands that everything has a time to live and a time to die." Death explained. Jena looked at her friends again stepping closer to Death who was opening a portal, the other side of which was dark and cold yet oddly inviting with a bright light at the end. Jena could see people waiting at the other end of the darkness. Her family, all waving happily, overjoyed to see her. She could vaguely hear their voices calling her name.
"Come child, it's time to go." Death said sadly.
Right then Raven fell through a portal that had suddenly opened in the ceiling. She levitated before coming to a gentle landing, Night on her shoulder.
"Raven!" Jack said in surprise at seeing the witch.
"You know my name?" Raven asked, confusion reflected in her gold eyes before turning to a serious expression, "later I need to help her." Her attention was drawn to a warmth growing on her neck. Looking down she saw a silver chain connected to a small jewel, the jewel was getting hot and started actually pulling her towards Jamie. Taking off the necklace to avoid getting choked, Raven looked in Jamie's hand and snatched the crystal ball from him.
"Give that back!" Jamie lunged at the witch who remarkably, for being shorter than Jamie, kept it out of his reach.
Jena could feel her spirit growing strong again. Under his hood Death smiled pushing Jena suddenly forward to her disappearing body.
"Go child you have three minutes." Death said.
"Thank you." Jena said, giving the cloaked figure a hug. Death was surprised at the warmth of the hug, most fought against him or came along without speaking.
"Go." He said, patting her shoulder.
Jena's body solidified and as she gasped for a breath it was enough to get Jamie to stop trying to get the crystal from Raven. The crystal was glowing like the jewel now and Raven could feel the pull of the two items now. Breaking the jewel from its clasp Raven slid it into the cracked part of the crystal. It glowed as bright as a star before floating out of Raven's hand and over above Jena. Everyone watched as it floated down and disappeared into her chest. Jena opened her eyes and sat up. Looking around the room she smiled as tears of joy slid down her face. Everyone else watched as Jamie helped her out of the bed, unable to speak or even move.
"It appears it wasn't my time yet after all." Jena said, breaking the spell of silence. All at once the spirits gathered around Jena in a group hug, Raven getting caught in the middle too.
"How in the world are you not dead?!" Jack asked, after all the hugging and crying subsided.
"Death said I had three more minutes one Raven and Night showed up." Jena said, looking at the witch, who was recovering from the hug.
"Night, that's your name?" She asked the bird. He nodded his head and rubbed it against her cheek. "I think it suits you."
"You don't remember?" Jena asked.
"No, I only know my name because Night told me." Raven said, stroking the bird.
"I can help with that." Tooth said fluttering over and holding out a tooth. Raven looked at the bird woman then at the tooth. Night nudged her and the air in the room stirred a bit.
"Ok." Raven nodded and moved closer to Tooth who put the tooth against Raven's forehead. It glowed faintly for a moment before Raven looked up at everyone.
"Hey guys, what's up?" Asked Raven looking around at everyone.
"Did it work?" Asked Joy.
"One way ta find out. Do you remember who I am?" Bunny asked.
"Of coarse I do Easter kangaroo." Raven teased floating out of boogie range from the pooka.
"Yep it worked." Jack laughed. They decided to leave the infirmary and retire to North's office. After much discussion everyone's story had been told and there was only one question Bunny wanted cleared up.
"Wait you said death gave you three minutes, but wait earlier he said that you had a minute for each being in the room." Bunny said, "Then Raven and Night showed up and he gave you three minutes. I don't get how that works?"
"Because there where three more beings in the room. It's just one you can't see." Jena said, standing up and walking over to stand next to Jack. Stretching her hand out in front of her she muttered something and the air in front of her hand began to wave like a heat wave or mirage. After a moment more of concentration Raven joined in Jena's incantation. Soon everyone was focusing on the spot and saying the same spell.
"I believe, I believe, I believe!" They said one last time in unison.
Then there standing front in front of everyone was a little girl in a brown pioneer dress. She had brown eyes and brown hair that had streaks of white running through it.
"Kira!" Jack said, scooping up his little sister and spinning around the room with her.
"Jack!" Kira said, hugging her big brother back. Other spirits arrived in time to see the two reunited siblings soar around the room. After some more hustle of questions and settling as other guests arrived, Kira was able to tell her story.
"So you've been right next to me ever since I came out of the ice?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, and although mom and dad where sad we were gone, but it turns out that the day we went ice skating mom was going to tell us that night that she was pregnant. Mom had a baby girl that she named Elizabeth and guess who's her descendant?" Kira said, looking pointedly at the Bennett siblings.
"Us?" They gasped.
"That explains the resemblance." Nodded North.
"You can say that again." Draven said, walking into the room.
"How'd you get out of the room?" North asked as he grabbed his swords.
"You might want to consider elf-proof locks." Draven said, "I'm not here to fight so you can put down the weapons."
"Why should we believe you?" Bunny asked.
"Because I am unarmed and will be going soon anyway, I've come to apologize." Draven said, holding his hands up in a pacifying manor.
"It's ok guys. He sorta helped us figure out how to save Jena." Said Kira and Night cawed in agreement.
"Thank you Kira." Draven bowed to her, straightening he bowed to the group if spirits in front of him, "I apologize for all the mischief I've caused, along with all the pain I deeply apologize. But you have to understand its in my nature."
"How is putting the lives of countless children in danger in your nature?!" Amor shouted. The normally coolheaded spirit looked ready to snap Draven's neck, only Eve was holding him back.
"I didn't put anyone besides you. It's my nature to create doubts. Doubts can save lives, so can fear." Draven calmly argued back, "a child about to ride his bike off a jump that could hurt him and possibly kill him gets the doubt in his head that he can't do this. So he doesn't and goes on to be a great mountain biker because of that one doubt kept pushing him the rest of his life to make up for that moment of cowardice and become something great."
"I couldn't have said it better myself." Pitch said appearing from Draven's shadow with Raven behind him. Pitch seemed different now, he was less dark and scary but still carried the eire of the nightmare king. Now everyone was ready to attack at the slightest threat of a wrong move. Jena stepped in between the two groups.
"There will always be doubt and fear." She said to the light spirits, "But they are necessary for the growth of a child. Fear teaches children to be brave, doubt can prevent rash and dangerous actions." Looking at the dark spirits, "So in a way you are Guardians too."
"Finally someone gets it." Pitch sighed.
"I'm not done. So why don't we work together to help the children of the world become the best they can be?" Jena added. Everyone was quiet for a while, until Pitch started laughing.
"We will always be enemies. If we tried to team up then we would just be stepping on each other's toes trying to do what we do. It was a cute idea but no, there will always be dark and light. Until next time Guardians." Pitch bowed before vanishing into the shadows.
"Always the dramatic exit." Draven rolled his eyes. He stepped forward and took Jena's hand. Jamie glared as he whispered something in her ear. She smiled as Draven said good bye.
"What did he say?" Jamie asked her as she came up next to him.
"That I have a great boyfriend and not to let him go." She smiled at him. He smiled back at her and pulled her into her arms for a kiss. As the other spirits watched as Draven bowed and kissed Amora's hand. Amora pulled him up by his coat collar and was looking at him with such a hateful look they wouldn't be surprised if she threw him out the window. Instead she kissed him full on the lips. Needless to say jaws hit the floor. Raven smiled as she stepped into the hall.
"Ready to go?" Pitch asked from the shadows.
"Yeah, I'm due to bring night to the eastern hemisphere right now." She said as Night cawed happily from her shoulder.
"I'll see you after then?" He asked.
"Count on it." Raven winked.
The Man in the Moon just smiled as he watched the events in the North Pole. Life would never be the same again after what these spirits have been through. But then again life is never the same twice.
