Apparently they weren't into billboard games. Dean did however put some mullet rock on and turned it all the way up making it so at least there was no longer silence, which was something at least. Xander decided to doze for a bit knowing it was his turn to drive next. Xander woke up some time later finding himself looking at another gas station.
He lifted his head off his chest where it had fallen in his sleep and wiped the drool off his chin. Xander looked at the driver's seat and the back and found them both empty. He shook his head trying to clear it of the fogginess and faintly remembered someone shaking his shoulder. Maybe that meant that they hadn't just abandoned him in the car; maybe they had tried to wake him up but failed.
Xander yawned as he was still a little sleepy, opened his door and stepped onto the ground. The light wind made him blink and woke him up a little bit more. He made his way into the gas station and saw Dean and Sam talking quietly by the hotdogs gathering food for them. Xander figured that he should probably make them aware of his presence, just in case they were talking about something that they didn't want to be overheard talking about.
"Hey guys." he said and they turned to him their faces revealing nothing. He was slightly more awake but didn't feel like delving into their expressions at the moment to try to figure out if he had interrupted something or not.
"Good, you woke up." Sam said as he nodded. "I tried to wake you but..." Sam trailed off because finishing the sentence was unnecessary. Xander nodded as well and turned around to look at the assortment of gas station food. What he wouldn't give for some real food; but Dean wanted to get back to Cleveland as soon as possible and Xander didn't blame him. It would probably be during Dean's next shift that they would get there: especially the way that Dean drove. In the end Xander decided on a very greasy pepperoni pizza slice. After he paid for said slice he made his way back to his car.
He half expected that Dean or Sam would be in the driver's seat and that he was going to have to remind them whose car it was. However, he found Sam in the passenger's seat and Dean in the back. Xander made his way into the car, fastened his seat belt and got them quickly back onto the road again. Though while they sat at stoplights on their way back to the freeway he ate his pizza.
Xander looked at Dean using the rear view mirror and saw that Dean was looking down at something. Xander then turned his attention to Sam who was looking out the window. Again silence, fantastic. He didn't want to listen to another round of mullet rock and he had a feeling that was the only kind of music that Dean wouldn't mock or make a fuss over. Xander tried to stay quiet since the other two Winchesters appeared to be fine with that but he had never really been good at the quiet game.
"So." he said and then stopped because he wasn't really sure what to follow the so with... which didn't really help and made the silence much more awkward. Xander found himself thinking that he probably should have just stayed quiet.
"Xander, how long have you been hunting? I mean like our kind of hunting?" Sam asked and Xander, while it wasn't his favorite topic of conversation, was glad that Sam had rescued the conversation.
"A couple years." he said although it made him sound like he was a newbie when he wasn't, but Xander decided not to correct himself. Sam nodded.
"So how did you get into it...I mean if it's not too personal." Sam amended quickly, because usually the kind of story of what got a person into hunting was personal. Xander supposed what had made him want to help Buffy in the first place had been extremely personal. Jesse... he still missed him... his best friend that he had staked. Xander reminded himself for what was probably the millionth time, that Jesse had been a vampire who had just happened to be wearing his best friends face. However even though what got him into hunting was also personal he could talk about it in broad terms.
"I spent a long time hanging out with Buffy- the slayer." he added when Dean didn't give any indication that he knew who Xander was talking about. "I didn't do much though. I mean I stopped a few apocalypses but mostly because of..." he looked at them unsure of how well they would take this "Possessions." he hurried on "Possession by a soldier and a hyena, no demons, not yet. Lost people, good people" Kendra, Joyce, Tara...Anya he swallowed not wanting to think about their deaths, especially because it reminded him of his most recent death, that of his mother. Now that he found Sam, Dean and was about to get their angel out of purgatory pretty soon, he wouldn't have any more distractions and he would have to grieve. Xander shook his head and pushed it all back again, he would deal with it later after Willow saved their angel.
"gained others." he continued and hoped he hasn't paused for too long. "Then I was going to be a watcher, they watch the slayer, teach them stuff, things like that. I went to Africa to try to round-up slayers and" he didn't want to get too in-depth with that he had seen, lots of things there that he didn't want to think about. "Then I decided that I didn't want to watch anymore so I started hunting." that was the past nine years of his life in a nut shell. There was a lot more he could say but that was the basics and all he was willing to share at the moment.
Sam nodded he seemed to open his mouth to say something, but he looked at Dean and shut his mouth again.
"Got any cool scars?" Dean asked and Xander looked at him strangely for a moment then forced himself to smile. He never thought any of his scars looked cool, especially the ones that had been put there by his father but he appreciated Dean's attempt to get into the conversation.
"Not really." he said but turned the question back around. "You?" Dean shook his head and Xander looked at Sam in the rear view mirror and Sam also shook his head. Three hunters and no cool scars, either the Winchesters were lying or seasoned hunters didn't really find scars cool anymore. Xander knew that he personally hated his scars. The scars reminded him of the events that made them, some of which were better than others but none were pleasant.
"Good thing there's still time." Xander said under his breath, because the likely hood of a hunter not getting any more scars ever again was not in their favor. Sam though apparently heard him and smiled slightly. Xander found himself slightly smiling as well.
